WIKI HAS BEEN EDITED & OVER-HAULED 8/26/09 IN ORDER TO UPDATE ACTIVE LINKS, REMOVE DEAD LINKS, AND SEPARATE ACTIVE OFFERS FROM DEAD OFFERS.

In order to make this Wiki document a living & useful document, we need everyone's help in keeping it updated, or at least in posting any necessary updates so the Wiki can be revised accordingly. So when you add a new Mercury offer or take advantage of an existing offer:

1) If you add a new offer, please provide the Mercury link followed by the name of the magazine, and then "Link Valid as of MM/DD/YEAR"
2) If you take advantage of an existing offer that still works, please update the "Link Valid" date to the most recent date that the link worked for you.
3) If you take advantage of an existing offer that no longer works, please remove the link and add the magazine title to the "Dead", keeping the most recent date offered.

When you seek a subscription on Mercury.com, if the check box for a magazine is empty and you can't check it, it means that offer is DEAD. See the picture below for what a good offer looks like. When you discover a dead link, please edit the wiki or post in this thread to let everyone know!

Why keep the the expired offers & the dates?-
1) To see if ___ magazine is ever offered from Mercury - not every magazine is offered.
2) to see how long ago ___ magazine was offered - if it was just last week, then no point in looking for it to return any time soon.
3) if all the dates are left intact, you could see if ___ magazine is offered every 3 months, or 1x a year...or what the pattern is.
If you are looking for a specific magazines, each of these might be important to know....depending on the answer, you may decide to buy a subscription instead of waiting.

Make sure to check back often for new offers, both here and in the magazines forum.

Big Thanks DokTor for putting this information into a new, more useful format.

Not only is mercury LIKE Freebizmags, it was started by defectors FROM freebizmags! Frankly, In think freebizmags has grounds for a lawsuit consider how closely their form and function resembles their own but who am I to look a free gift magazine in the mouth?? hehehe.

The big difference with Mercury though is there is no option to oput in a Home address, so if you want it sent to your home, you need to use a business name that won't freak out your postal carrier. Since I belong to and run a community garden, I use "XXX Community garden project" as my business title since I often get mail addressed to me that way.

Yes, in fact I think that on FBM's website they say that their unique trade magazine questionairre system has a patent pending, so they may have a chance.

I have to say both have there pluses and minus of the way they do things for the magazines. I like that AFM gives you other options etc.. while they are similar they are not exactly the same. Mecury has had more offers lately.

Is Mercury legit? Do they spam you to death and/or junk mail you to death? Curious if I should but a bogus email address, or do you have to activate from an email?

EricLeMaster

Mercury has been legit to me so far... haven't received a magazine yet, but they take awhile. They do everywhere.

Anyway, they do not spam, not to my knowledge... also, there are some offers for e-mail newsletters and digital editions that you DO NOT have to sign up for.

Just letting you know! :)

I was really surprised at how much I like Seed. I am very impressed with the way it is put together.

Seed is not one of the trade mags - so there is no "right combination" to try and figure out. Either the links work, or they don't.

Has anyone recieved any of the gaming mags?
they take way longer than 2 weeks

most mags like stuff etc takes solid 8 weeks

I just started getting seed from the merc offer and a few others, so these do come. They arent as reliable as freebiz but they do eventually come. not as good selection of titles either.

That's called "Back-serving" in publisher talk. By sending you three issues at the beginning of your sub, all of olkder issues, they can force you to renew faster. You have very right to object to this and they will give you creditfor the 2 older issues if you call customer service. They'll extend your sub by those two issues. Lots of slick dealers have gotten hip to back-Serving and are calling sutomer service to get the credit back for those issues. In a lot of cases, the person has already bought the back issues on the newsstand.

Publishers rely on the fact that the majority of new subscribers will just let it go and then they can start sending them renewal letters that much faster. heck, some publishers even send you "renewal at birth" letters with a low-renewal rate offer after they serve you your first issue hoping you'll be so thrilled with the mag that you'll pay up for another year. it's often a mistake to pay that rate. The best rates are often found in blow-in cards or get sent to you a n issue or two before your sub is up. Renewals-at-birth rates are about 20% higher than the blow-in rates.

heck no! Blow-In cards have the lowest RETAIL price. Mag Sub brokers will almost always have lower prices but the trade off is the very long wait for the sub to begin and the possibility that the broker is bogus. only use mag sub brokers that have been discussed favorably here on Slick Deals.

There is the occasional mag that has chpeaer rates on blow in cards but they tend to be the very pricey ones or ones that never offer cheap brokered rates such as National Geographic, The Economist etc. if you see a high rate for a mag oin a broker's wesbite, go steal a blow-in card from the newsstand and compare. The publishers stick 4 to 6 blow-in cards in newsstand copies for just that purpose. They know people flipping through will sometimes take the card but not buy the issue.

FYI - occasionally, the sewn-in cards have even lower rates than the blow-ins but not usually. Check both to be sure and then check them against brokered prices. if you can live with the wait - go for the broker when it's cheapest.

Once again for the folks in the back -

If you try a particular Mercury offer and it will NOT check the box next to the mag you want - it means the offer is DEAD DEAD DEAD.

They are ex-FBM dudes who started their own company and their program works an awful lot like FBM. FBM offer links also stay up sometimes for months past their expiration and the only way you can tell that it's dead is that it won't offer you the mag - just dumb trade magazines. Mercury works the same way. if there is no Check in the box next to the name of the mag,and you cannot put a check in that box manually, deal is dead.

Dang, we need a Mercury tutorial thread too, huh?

With diffrent links, I would think that they would just combine your subscriptions to a total of three years. Like it does when you sign up for diffrent offers. Just as long as you use the same name and address that is used with your original subscrption... Has anyone tried do not want to be getting three seperate CGW, PSM and EGM magazines (LOL)

Question: has anyone actually gotten any mags from Mercury? I signed up for several and never haven't received any yet

I know I've received Spa, EGW, Official PS, and CGW as well as the digitals I've signed up for. I usually get an application confirmation from them right after I sign up and then get the magazine some time afterwards.

I'm sure I don't need to tell you since you've been around so long, but Nuala's Mom has a solution which I've started following:

Print out confirmation and then call if the magazine hasn't arrived after 4 weeks or so.

Give it a try.

From Mercury I've gotten about 8. I know I have gotten from them 2 subs to Official Playstation w/disk (my hubby and I would fight over the disks if I didn't. he has a PS2 at work he fiddles with sometimes cuz his company licenses material for PS2). I have gotten SPA, Seed, EGM and some others I can't name off the top of my head. Mercury mags come a little quicker than FBM. The OPS was the great one! I LUV getting that.

Nope - no magic combos for mercury either - just like freebizmags. if a real business profile (as opposed to a student profile) won't get you the mag, then there are no more subs to be had. Both FBM and Mercury have recently changed their policy on Student profiles. They no longer offer the free consumer mags to people using a student profile the way they used to. it is all covered in the Mythbusting thread linked to in my signature.

Yes yes I know, The Other/Student/Other profile used to work fine for FBM. However, about 4 to 5 months ago, people who had used it for ages started reporting having problems of not being offered the mag. I scrwed around testing a few student profiles versus regular business type profiles and discovered that for the most part, any kind of student profile wasn't working anymore. I believe that's becuase FBM got wise to the fact that so many free mags were going tom people they could not make money on. Their whole reason for being is to sign you up for trade mags. they get paid a finders fee for every new qualified subscriber to a Trade mag. It stands to reason then, doesn't it, that students lapping up the free consumer mags they use to lure people in are just losing them money?

Moral of the story - use a regular business profile - any reg bus profile will do. See mythbusting thread for some examples.

I qualified for Seed about two months ago and still haven't gotten a mag, got the other two I qualified for on the same day, Giant and Hollywood Life, but not that one. Should I try again?

I qualified for Seed about two months ago and still haven't gotten a mag....

That question got me thinking that I hadn't received an issue from them in a while either. Their website shows the most recent to be the August/September issue. They seem to be updating the "Week in Science" postings so hopefully we'll see the October/November issue soon. It may be that your subscription missed the August/September mailing and will start with the October/November issue.

If you think your subscription request fell through the crack, then fill out the request again. Worse comes to worse you can combine the two subscriptions or cancel one(?).

Thanks. I figure if I end up with two I can always donate them to a local Dr.'s office of something. :)

Doesn't work - can't select this magazine

It's hard to say if this is over or not. This is what you'll see when the offer is ultimately over:

Offer Expired

We're sorry, this offer is no longer available.
It has reached its expiration date or
the inventory has been depleted.

Click the continue button below to see
other free magazines that are available.

This deal with the magazine picture and uncheckable box happened back on the Sporting News magazine offer as well. When people were posting that they couldn't check the box but could see the offer, I actually was able to get on with a "secondary" email and my education profile and the box was checked for me. I don't know what to say.

I can't get the box to show up checked for the PC magazine though like I could for the Sporting News offer. I think they must be holding out for some wierd unique combination. There is something odd about the number sequence on the link as well. It doesn't follow the traditional pattern. You might randomly check back until it actually says the offer is expired.

Anyone selling a subscription with good feedback is fine. Just search for ____ subscription (fill in the blank with the magazine you are looking for). Often times you can get a price like $9 for two years. Just make sure the person you are buying from has good feedback (most of them do anyway) :)

I will send you a PM

I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but I was getting PC magazine for my Neighbor and figured since Mercury doesn't even read what we put under Title and Comopany name to fill it out this way:

Name: Actual name or name of cat
Job Title: Resident
Company: Apt.#
Address: Street Address
City: real city
State: Real State
Zip - Real Zip

That way, you don't have to come up with the name of your gardening club or girl scout troop if you want to have the mag sent to you at home. try it. it works and it's not being dishonest - something I'm all for.

how do people get additional years?

If you keep signing on with the same info, it will automatically be stacked on (most of the time), worst case if they sent more than 1, call in or sent email and
ask for subs to be combined

archelon

so you can sign up unlimited times?

Nuala'sMom
10-14-2006, 09:42 AM
No, they do not always stack the years and neither does freebiz mag. Usually what happenes is you get multiple copes of the same magazine. We used to be able to call up customer service and merge those duplicate subs no problem but many of the magazine service call reps have gotten hip to what we're up to and refuse to do it. They can see that our subs are whater are called 'sponsored subscriptions' when they pull up your account. Sometimes they are OK with it, sometimes not - for me it seems to be not as of late.

The above comment is refering to when you sign up under multiple links within a short period of time. if you sign up for the same magazine a few months later and wind up with duplicates, the service reps usually WILL merge those subs. It is a hit and miss thing - no real way to predict. The worst case scenario is you get two or three copies of the same mag which isn't so bad! Just give them away.

Now FBM on the otherhand, will tack on an extra year usually IF IF IF the sponsor is different from the last time you signed up. For example, if your VIBE su was originally sponsored by Veteran's Advantage and now there's an offer up sponsored by Computer associates, you can sign up and prolly get an extra year tacked on. That's why people posting new or renewed FBM offers should ALWAYS include the sponsoring info.

Keep in mind alot of the time it's just the luck of the draw as to whether or not you get a crabby customer service rep who won't merge a sub. I've successfully merged lots of subs. I have the LEAST trouble merging two subs from two different addys - work and home or.. two subs one in my name at home and one in hubby's name at home or work.

If you luck out and they stack the years - great! just don't expect that to happen 100% off the time.

Hi all,

Just wanted to say that i got a call from a rep from stuff magazine 'offering' me to continue my subscription for a mear $1.99 an issue or something like that ( i signed up about 4 months ago through freebizmag or another link i cant remember anyhow for free ) and also wanted to throw in maxim for a year as well. Good Deal but unfortunately i can't afford it at the moment but i guess is was my fault in putting in my real phone number in the app anyhow. Just wanted to let you guys know about the call and that i had to cancel  unless they were gonna give it to me for free.... Thanks!

I see people go on about receiving duplicates and having to merge subs, but although I sign up for the same magazines repeatedly, I have yet to get multiple copies of the same issue.
Every additional sub that I have signed up for so far has just tacked itself on to the back of my current one :dontknow:

I don't know what happened while I was away, but it looks like Mercury Magazines is on a digital kick now:

The complimentary WaterSki (digital edition) subscription is sponsored by Veterans Advantage.
http://www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/101/10187
(already posted as its own thread)

The complimentary Caribbean Travel & Life (digital edition) subscription is sponsored by Veterans Advantage.
http://www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/101/10188

The complimentary Garden Design (digital edition) subscription is sponsored by Veterans Advantage.
http://www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/101/10189

The complimentary Cruising World (digital edition) subscription is sponsored by Veterans Advantage.
http://www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/101/10190

The complimentary Marlin (digital edition) subscription is sponsored by Veterans Advantage.
http://www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/101/10191

The complimentary Sport Diver (digital edition) subscription is sponsored by Veterans Advantage.
http://www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/101/10192

It's one new digital magazine for each increase in the number sequence. My Zinio account has all of these - I think from previous FBM secondary offers or Mercury offers. I don't know if they extend the digital subscription at all.

Maybe a dumb question, but what is Digital Edition mean?

gleed
10-23-2006, 06:35 PM
It means that you view the magazine on your computer, for example as a PDF file that is e-mailed to you every month/week, instead of receiving a physical paper copy of the magazine in the mail.

There is no combination secret, if it is greyed out, it means they are out of it.. For now, it seems that they come back, you just have to check it every so often.

Read these couple of posts, it will give you a better idea, Mercury works pretty much the same as FBM:

By the way folks "FFW" means Fark Fat Wallet not Fark anyone here. Fat Wallet Users have a well established tendency to lift the long list of links that Slick Dealers collect, check and post as also do a couple of Rep-whores from SDs too.

I used to get annoyed when Rep-Whores :greedy: and fat Wallet users used to take my entire post, personal comments, spelling errors and all and post it as if it were their own words, but I eventually got over it and learned to consider it flattery. If someone from here lifts your post lock, stock, mispelling, personal comments and barrel too, just report it as a repost and pay them no mind. Someone that needy for reps has deeper problems that calling them out on copycatism can't even begin to address. Pity them, don't hate them. However, if fat walleters do it, go ahead and say FFW, we've all had it happen to us and we feel your pain.:comfort:

Pssst: L'il fun way to fark with the fark walleters: Always include some weird mispelling or odd punctuation in your post.(or find a way to hide the word CELERY in there but that's harder) The copy and pasters will out themselves. Petty, I know, but it makes me giggle sometimes:teehee:

Hiding celery in the post sounds great :lmao: Hmm... Maybe use a tag that works on SD but not on FW to hide it...

Anyway, that's really just how the deal world works. If no one copied stuff from SD, the FFWers would miss out on a lot of deals -- and the same thing for SD. I was also upset when I first found some of my freebies copied onto FW, so I understand what it's like, especially if its a long or creative post that you put a lot of time and effort into.
At some point, though, I guess we gotta accept that it's just what happens :dontknow:

ReadyMade Magazine (DIY magazine)
http://www.mercurymagazines.com/pr1/121/12115

Here's the description:

ReadyMade is the only do-it-yourself (DIY) magazine for young people on the newsstand today. Our readers are smart, upwardly-mobile, urban-minded, and environmentally-conscious. In a sharp-witted and offbeat tone, ReadyMade entertains and informs through DIY projects for fast-evolving lifestyles. ReadyMade is for people who like to make stuff, who see the flicker of invention in everyday objects -- the perfectly round yolk in the mundane egg.

Oh, OK. These three titles sure can be confusing! The subs for plain old SPA magazine came from StartSampling. Spa FInder and Luxury Spa Finder were from Mercury and before that FBM.

I can't get Sporting News either. It let me get all the other ones, but when it comes to the screen to check the box for the magazine you want, the box under Sporting News is grayed out, and it won't let me check it. If anyone figures it out, please post or pm me. Thanks! Oh yeah, I tried all three links, also, and that didn't work. Thanks!

Rep'd op.

Just like FBM, it it won't offer you the magazine or let you check it off - the offer is DEAD. Remember, Mercury uses the same basic software as FBM and was founded by former FBM employees. Both places work the same way - no magic profiles.

The Playstation Mag is dead (all 3 links)

Most likely that is due to the fact that Playstation Magazine ceased publication in January 2007. Those with remaining issues on their subs are now getting Electronic Gaming Monthly instead.

Premiere magazine is also gone but some links are stillflaoting around for offers for that - maybe FBM?? Subscribers were given US Weekly instead

I can't get it, and I use the exact same financial profile to get everything from Horticulture to Metro Home to Art in American.

They must have run out.

Financial Advisor

I have been using the same above profile with the same email address for three years for everything. I even got Memory, which is a scrapbook mag. Now tell me how that relates to Finance. It doesn't relate at all to finance.

Consistency is what they want to see. Now your guessing as to what they want.

If I can't get it even with my guaranteed profile, it means that they ran out of subs.

B

P.S. You can get ReadyMade for $5 a year (6 issues), from what I understand at

http://publicationstation.net/items/subscriptions/hobbies/readymade-detail.htm

Use code DIY at checkout. The discount doesn't display until the last step.

Almost two years ago a website that gives me "points" referred me to Mercury Magazines to get a year of SPIN for free and earn points. I ordered it from Mercury Mags and SPIN has just kept coming. Does anyone know if I will be getting this for life? It was only supposed to be a year. Not complaining, just wondering if this is typical for those who have used Merc Mags.

If you can't check the box that means the offer is dead.

Edited to clarify: If the box has a checkmark in it already, the offer is still good. I posted a diagram in the wikipost.

If you can't check the box that means the offer is dead.

Women's Day just came up (separate post) and when I tried my usual combination, it came up as the grey check box so I figured I couldn't get it. I backed up and entered "Homemaker" and it came up with the grey check box as well as one that I could check. That's new to me because I thought if a combo didn't work, then it was done.

The box for the main offer is always gray. If there's already a checkmark in the box, the offer is good, if it's empty, the offer is dead. Sometimes they will offer additional magazines with black check boxes you can check or uncheck because those are optional. Hope this helps!
