Over the last few weeks I have seen multiple threads regarding REP point questions - with lots of answers from the SD community and Moderators. But many of these are confusing and sometimes contradictory. As much as I respect (I really do) the opinions of those with multiple posts and points who have explained the system, there are still so many ways and unanswered questions. So I propose that the person responsible for setting up REP points in the first place should explain how the whole system of REP works and put that on the FAQ page.

There has got to be someone that understands it from top to bottom (the person who designed/controls the system) and a response from him/her would answer a lot of peoples questions and clear up the confusion.
Thanks

I know plenty of people are confused about rep points when they start.

This is what is in the rules/faq/etc section

Reputation Points
Reputation points are a measure of good posts in the deal and tech support forums. Some users wanted some way to distinguish between great deal hunters and people who post a lot in the lounge and podium. There is nothing to gain by having a high reputation number, so begging for points is frowned upon. If you wish you can disable your reputation points by going to user cp-> edit options -> show my repution level. Conversly if you reputation is not enabled you can do so by doing the same thing. Under usercp you can see who gave you your last 5 points and any comments they might have left behind. A grey box is from people who are newly registered to prevent people from creating addition accounts to give themselves reputation points.

To give reputation points click either the user's reputation points or the green box next to it.

What are some things that you think should be more clear and added? Maybe if we get a list together, it can be added in?

I know there's been alot of talks recently but....

OP, don't worry about what comments SDers have to say regarding reps. All you have to do is take note from what a Moderator or the Webmaster has to say....as well as what SlickChik posted straight from the FAQ page. Other than a Mod or Mr. SD, other comments are mostly commentary or suggestions.

did that make sense???

can you clarify what exactly is confusing?

i agree that the faq's need updating, but it'd help to know what i should add

I'm curious also... The system seems pretty straightforward to me. The FAQ explanation sums it up nicely... Meaning, folks that post deals and other useful information tend to get reps from other users who appreciate their efforts... Whereas someone who just rants and raves all the time, never posting anything to help anyone else, would likely have a high number of posts but a low rep value.

As a new user, I was curious how long before I can give reps. I'm hoping to get a dell coupon and would like to reward the person that gives it to me. I have been a lurker for years but never had the need to register. I am just curious. Thanks in advance.

You have to have 50 posts before your rep points count. Before 50 reps it shows up as a "gray rep" to the person you are repping, but doesnt count towards their rep count.

What determines how much your reps are worth? I got repped from someone with almost the same reps but about triple the posts and their reps were worth two. Is the value of your reps determines solely by post count. I heard a response to a similar question about algorithms being involved. I can't help but believe this is bull.

Also I have found that I can't give as many reps as before. Maybe five before I am cut off for 24hrs. If I am doing something wrong then I would appreciate a warning or an explanation PM instead of being treated like a child and just cut-off!

Thanks:)

You start out with your rep being worth 1 point, after you have 50 posts.

You can rep 1 additional point per year of membership. Also, you can rep an additional point after you reach 500 reps. And they are stackable.

For example, if you joined SD in April of 2004 and you have 550 rep points, your reps are worth 4 points each. Mods, correct me if I'm wrong.

Thanks for clarifying that. I now know why my rep points are worth 3 :)

I think some of the things that are confusing are:

1. Why don't my reps count? (New users don't know they have to have 50 posts)

2. What is the difference between a green and gray rep? (I know its in the FAQ, but people seem to miss it :idontknow )

3. How do people give reps that are worth more? (the whole post/years/rep points as factors....many people don't know)

4. Why can't I rep the same person again?

Anyone want to add other things that might be confusing?
