View Full Version : MKV file lags when outputting to HDTV via HDMI

Laptop:
i3 370
ATI 5650
4GB DDR3
1366x768 res
Monitor:
Asus VW266H
1920x1200 res
TV:
Panasonic 46" Plasma
1920x1080 res
When I view Inception.mkv on my laptop, playback is smooth as butter.
When I view Inception.mkv on my monitor via HDMI, playback is again smooth.
However, when I view Inception.mkv on my HDTV via HDMI, playback is very choppy. Both video and audio stutter/lag.
Any ideas?

When you output it to your TV do you have the resolution set correctly?
and if it is then it may be the onboard video on that laptop.

Yes I made sure to set the resolution correctly.
My laptop can only utilize its HDMI port with the ATI 5650 so I should definitely have enough GPU power to support the file right?
When I look at the task manager, my CPU usage never exceeds 25% but it stutters/lags throughout the movie.

Call the support for the laptop, and note exactly what TV size, an HD movie, how you are connected etc. and see what they say.
Also many other people with your similar specs(same gfx) are having same issue as you are.

Try closing all programs, also what player are you using to play the files?

Whoa I didn't realize how many other people with my GPU have this problem... :(.
I use VLC player.
I should be getting my hands on another laptop today with i5 460 and integrated graphics. I'll test out the file on that one and see if I can narrow down this problem to my GPU or TV.

you can also try xbmc
you can also try installing the codecs manually, however I read some of the other posts with your specs and they noted no change.
See if a 720P mkv file will play normally.

Make sure your graphics drivers are up to date as well as VLC. I believe with 10.2 ATI added the ability to use GPU decoding in VLC. This is not enabled by default and must be done manually. http://www.techspot.com/news/39388-vlc-media-player-gets-gpu-decoding-on-windows-and-linux.html

Don't use VLC, use Media Player Classic - Home Cinema. Try playing with DXVA disabled and enabled and compare.
VLC can "play everything", but that doesn't mean it plays it well.
Ancalagon is right. Get Media Player Classic by downloading CCCP or K-Lite.
VLC sucks at playing HQ video at 720p, 1080p, and 4K.
VLC DXVA is still buggy.
If that doesn't work, there might be something wrong with the HDTV HDCP copyright handshake.

CCCP and K-Lite are almost as bad as VLC, codec packs are horrible. Use the 'Home Cinema' edition of MPC instead.
CCCP comes with MPC-HC. I use that with PDVD10's decoder.

Your evidence show this:
Your vlc player is fine, since it works on lappy and monitor.
Your HDCP is fine, because it works on lappy and monitor via HDMI cable.
Your HDMI cable is fine.
Now, you can try to play a regular mpg file on your laptop/plasma, and it too should studder. If it does, then your plasma does not like your GPU. If it doesn't studder on the mpg file, then I don't know what's wrong.
