A friend of mine created a profile today on my computer, and it got a Perma-Ban after about 30 min and 3 posts. Why is that?

Mods saw that your friend created his/her account on your computer with the same IP address. They probably thought you were setting up another account for yourself.

Why would I do that when I'm so beloved here ?

(And are they really that quick? wow... I'm impressed!)

Seriously though, is that really a big problem? There's got to be a better way of notifying the person, instead of just banning first and asking later! What happens if a bro and sis each want a username, and they share a computer?

Or if someone wants to login at a friend's house?

Well...we aren't sure what happened. I would PM a mod and ask.

Who are you again?

 jk

If I were doing this, I would've contacted a mod to let them know.

That is usually not a problem. :)

yeah, my little brother's acct got banned, I assume for this. But he didn't care to post anymore so he let it go, lol. Too much modding if you ask me.

we would look into the details such as who logged in at what time and what was posted. In this case it seems a bit weird that the OP and his friend both posted in the same thread 3 mins apart from each other.....I'm just saying.....But like I said before, for further info please contact Mr.SD.

And as for the too much modding comment, you would be amazed at the stuff we catch/see.

Too much modding if you ask me.

SD is the best ran website and forumboard I have ever seen in 10+ years of web browsing. I never get to see any major arguments go down on the boards, but sometimes see a funny quote from someone who isn't in the thread anymore. These guys are on top of their game here. Wish I had found this site earlier. Keep up the great work guys.

odd. when i was temp banned and created another account to find out what happened he didn't get permanently banned.

Hey, I'm not really upset. He created an account just so I could show him how to do it. And then I posted in a thread, forgetting I was logged in as him. I didn't want him getting my reps (if any) so I logged him out, and me back in.

I don't blame you for banning people for doing something bad, I was really more just suprised, since we didn't do anything! But hey, if that's the way it's gotta be, I'll tell my friend to use his own computer next time... Don't want to offend Mr. SD... :worship:

My GF signed up for an account and we both use the same computer.
Sometimes she uses her computer at work so maybe she signed up at work or something.
I don't think we have ever posted in the same thread from the same computer however.
But I don't see anything wrong with that unless you are being cleary abusive.

If there is a subject in the podium that I or she is posting in and one or the other wants to respond to someone in the post, we could get banned for that.
I'll have to keep that in mind and be careful.
Maybe if we sent an email to a mod first to let them know that we are going to post in a thread that our significant other has posted in, it would be ok ??

As long as we are aware that they are 2 different people, who occasionally use the same computer at times, then it should be fine.

even with dsl you can change your ip address by unplugging your modem for a day or so. You will be assigned a new ip address by ..Verizon..lets say

there are of course other ways but this is the easiest.

Well I didn't know it and created another user ID at work because I forgot my password. Should you guys be deleting it? It only has 6 posts because someone warned me about it (a non-mod) that it was against the rules so I haven't used it since... but it's still open...

Yeah they should fix this now. They policy should be they should PM the questionable account and ask for an explaination... If none is given then ban them...

I do not enjoy ban happy sites. Hope this one isn't like that, this rule doesn't not seem fair at all. I have family I was going to tell about this site, but if my account will face the chance of being banned then I won't tell them.

Get banned often then, do ya?

I think the question has already been addressed. PM a mod and tell them who you've got joining from your same locale. Seems fair to me.

:iagree:

You can give mod a heads up that your sibiling/friend/spouse are going to be loging from same IP before they create an account.

Or PM afterward if you didn't know about the policy.

Yeah, like I said it's not worth worrying about or I would've contacted one of you guys. Ya'll do a pretty good job. But an occupational hazard of doing a good job is sometimes doing too good a job. So we can live with that as it is far more desireable than the alternative. ;)

Appreciate the personal response, too, btw

I'd like to know who farks around with people's log-in's :(
I keep getting notices with IP Address's that this is happening
and it keeps me from loggin on.
It's like someone playing a sick joke :mad2:
Asked if they can look into this, and no response.
What's up with this - you have the IP Address this is coming from :(
And it's the same one all the time...

this isn't a use same computer get banned thing. its just another tool we have to identify duplicate accounts.

ex, there was someone had 5 accounts and on his deals, they coincedentally all posted in there and repped him.

this doesn't really mean you can't share computers, if we do ban, just a pm to us explaining what happeend should be able to clear it up.
