To curb leeching another message board I use has a code button that only revives the text once aregistered users posts a message.
this would help with one-time use coupons that unregistered users are snatching
hidden code until posted

OP, what difference does it make to you and to me whether another user is registered or not?
The owner of the site probably gets paid by advertisers regardless of whether or not people who click through to ads are are registered.
IMHO, requiring registration and posting would just clutter the forum with the obligatory posts and would add nothing to the quality of the site.

Why would you care if you are already registered?

yeah, if you really want to prevent leeching, keep codes to PMs. this is no big deal if you already spend a lot of time on the site...

I actually like this idea...the coupons forum is almost useless being that its public...hotdeals and other forums are fine, but if your looking for a dell 35 off coupon or something it really sucks when someone posts a bunch and they get used without anyone ever mentioning anything or thanking the person, most people say PM me if you want one, or PM me if you have one I can have...but in reality, by the time someone has one for you..its too late...

at least AirHead gets it. most leechers will not register to get codes. Having registered users post to see the code increases the likelyhood that a fellow slickdealer gets to use the code instead of it disappearing in the middle of their purchase.
it was just a thought anyway.
as far as the PM thing goes. most code posters just post the code and don't ask for PMs so that shoots that theory.

:iagree: And I think codes should be kept to PM, but I hate to think about those iTunes or Movielink codes that are posted in public and how many of them go to people who may never ever post here or contribute. In fact I was thinking about posting this suggestion too.

i like this idea! i hate it when i go to use a code and its already been used but no one posted that they used it. its not a HUGE deal but it can get annoying.

FINALLY there are other users who think like me. I was recently flamed in the coupon thread because I made a post for a 1 use coupon saying I would give it to the first member to respond with a post count above a certain number I think it was 25. This other member, being WELL over the limit and also posting coupon codes just couldn't understand why I would want to do that and not just post the code in the thread.
I ALWAYS recommend in the coupon threads to list the info about the code and require that the member be of a certain requirement to recieve it. I don't know why there is such hostility toward this, especially from other members with decent post counts. If this could be made into something workable automatically like the OP said, I think this would lead to a substantial benefit to members in good standing here.

I can see the rationale behind the logic of the coded message. It is a bit irritating when someone swipes a code. I have always asked to PM a code and luckily have been given by members of this community. I will also only PM a code to those who are asking....:)

That really makes sense. I've been giving away tons of Kodak codes (the summer of smiles game was very good to me)... I'd say at least half the people who ask me for codes are brand new and signed up just for that purpose. Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with that (new people are good), but newbies are also the only ones who ask for "all your extra codes" or "a bunch of free codes".
The SD regs aren't so greedy.

PMing is great until you have to send out 50 PMs to people asking for codes, i.e. just the other day I accrued 50 Rapidshare accounts and I asked people to PM me. Little did I know that only one PM can be sent each minute. That meant that I had to actually spend 50+ minutes on this board waiting for the time to go down =P

i agree with you totally, unfortunately its basically impossible to implement unless the admins want this...
and i doubt that they do...
on the other hand, it be a nice feature to make posts to be seen only by people with certain post#/rep (the legit reps earned for helping/posting deals, not just ass kissing)
ie: post some stackable rare dell coupon likethis
usually 35% off + maybe some 10-20% stackable (the ones people pay $30 on ebay for) and say only people who have 500 posts/50 rep count can see the post...
but this probably will never be implemented

I agree that this defintely needs to be done. (I posted a new thread about this, not realizing there was already one open....)
Anyways, I think it is only fair that you should have to be registered to be able to take advantage of things like coke codes that people are sharing, etc. If you don't contribute to the site, why should you be able to take advantage? Plus I think this would force more people to register, thus increasing the member count.
I don't think that making people post is going to increase the junk posts necessarily - I've done this myself on my messageboard (making my board only viewable to registered members) and it has helped alot to increase membership and let new people post that might not normally.
Just my opinion.

I would like to see this feature added for stuff like UPC codes, hidden urls you have figured out, or reward points you don't want non members to take. It would make lurkers register a lot more and increase potential ad revenue for the website.

Put a shit load of ads on the registration page?
As for everything else, I have been arguing this point forever! We should prob give it up as it will most likely not even happen.

More registered users means they can charge more for advertising.

As you can see from my previous post in this thread, im all for this idea. But if I was the owner of slickdeals I might be hesitant. As a registered used we see 1 ad, at the top of the page, not bothersome at all. Now, if you were visiting the site as an unregistered user you will notice there are embedded advertisements in threads, therby doubling the advertising per page...so I can totally understand the hesitancy of implementing this feature. However, I refuse to think that slickdeals only cares about incoming revenue. If slickdeals did in fact care only about revenue then every link that makes it to the from page would have a referal ID so they could collect. Now im sure some websites only look at the referrer information in the header, but I think that if slickdeals wanted to they could easily bump up thier revenue quite a bit. On that note, I dont believe that the admin of this site will ignore this request and im sure it will be considered.
Also, I will mention that the people who post in this forum are the people who make this company the most money, without them there would be no need to have this argument because there would be no users. So a feature request that will benefit already CONTRIBUTING members can and will in the long run increase revenue.

To curb leeching another message board I use has a code button that only revives the text once aregistered users posts a message.
this would help with one-time use coupons that unregistered users are snatching
hidden code until posted:confused:
