Is acne some kind of modern affliction or has it always been around? If it's always been around then wouldn't people in the Middle Ages have had a much harder time cleansing their skin since they (a) had much harder lives/less leisure time; and (b) had no access to better cleansers?
I always think that if I went back in time people would be really smelly and probably kind of gross. Like, scarred and dirty and missing eyes or all warty and junk. And, hairy.

I bet they also had lots more dingleberries, too. And sweatboogers and toe-jam.
And peter cheese.

:nono2: That's not sexy.
Did they have sanitary napkins or some equivalent back then?
Dude, seriously. Do you think you could get busy with a hairy-legged stinky unshaved-armpits broad on a bed made from straw crawling with fleas & ticks & whatever else? With like a chamberpot in the corner of the room? How did they do that?
If you look at uncivilized countries there is little or no acne. I think its a modern thing.

Napoleon was known to write to his wife, Josephine and ask her to not wash because he was on his way back home. :vomit:
I think it's revolting, but bathing daily, shaving, and hygiene products are modern day necessities. Body odor was considered an aphrodisiac "back in the day" and still is in many parts of the world. I'm really glad we have soap!

Jinx! This thought occurred to me also recently while watching The Tudors. All the actors had such perfect complexions but King Henry gets a nasty case of gout and Anne of Cleves says it smells disgusting.
Don't know why but it seems like Cleopatra would have smelled good from all the oils and baths. What did they use before toothpaste came along?? :vomit:

They didn't have all this crappy food that we have now. They had much better diets back then and the bodies produced less oil on the skin. I'm sure acne is a modern affliction.

Yep, they didn't eat sugar in EVERYTHING like we do.

Yeah, they washed less often so their bodies produced less oil. If you starting washing (your hair, face, etc) everyday, you will have to continue washing everyday because your body is producing more oil. We don't wash babies everyday and they're not oily.

This is exactly what I thought. Coincidentally, a lot of people who start a Paleo or other low carb diet and cut out refined sugars, processed foods and the like notice their skin clears up almost immediately. There was speculation about them not having tooth decay either...not sure I am buying that one though.

for what it's worth, in one English Lit class i took, when we covered European history, one of the reasons given for why the aristocrats adopted the practice of powdering their faces (male and female) was to cover the many blemishes on them, both from acne and diseases like smallpox. i forget the specific era, but the professor basically echoed some of the comments in this thread, saying they very rarely bathed and had constant BO/skin issues.
edit: also, it's a bit of a myth that everybody had great diets hundreds of years ago, especially during the middle ages. the peasant class basically scraped by on what they could grow and didn't have access to much meat at all. one of the major reasons (along with lack of proper sanitation) for the low life expectancy back then was malnutrition.

When you consider their average lifetime back then it wouldn't matter much,

No, I'm just familiar with his posting history and his tendency to pull random figures out of his ass and try to pass them off as "facts."

If you didn't care, you wouldn't have read my post, much less replied to it. ;)
And I'm sorry, do you not like it when people expose you for what you really are? :comfort:
