View Full Version : N00b bashing ends NOW.

The Raddish
08-06-2006, 08:52 AM
It is Slickdeals policy to welcome anyone and everyone in the Lounge, especially new people who have never been here before. Every one of us was a n00b at one point.

Lately, there has been a lot of hostility towards n00bs or all the cute little names that you have been calling them. Today, it stops.

There will be no more discussion of Br00ces, or how PW's are better than n00bs, or whatever ridiculous things you have been posting lately. Such posts will garner trolling warnings, and enough of them will get you a ban.

I encourage you all to use the Mod Alert feature to bring such nonsense posts to our attention.

Everyone is welcome to post here. We are not and never will be some kind of exclusive club. If you find that you are not able to welcome new people and you find that you can't be friendly toward them, then I suggest you find another place to post.

Who has been n00b bashing? I bash stupid people equally regardless of how much time they waste posting on Internet messageboards. Is this still allowed or will it be classified as a hate crime if the person happens to be new?

Thank you Raddish for stepping in. This should always be a place to hang out, meet new people and have fun.

I must take the blame for introducing Bruce into the lounge :sadwalk:, it was never meant to be taken this far! It was a thing that my friends and I used to always say (well spoken Bruce!). By introducing the Monty Python skit to the masses , I may have misjudged how it would be used!
if anyone was offended by the misuse of this , I'm sorry!
But I will be damned and warned(I guess) if I'll stop using Well spoken Bruce!

That is all, move along ,nothing to see here...

Ok.. on topic post:

The Raddish, I think you are 100% wrong saying that we bashed noobs. Sure we called them "bruce", but every single post I have seen is a :welcome: to the Lounge.

For example, I posted on my little brother's SD name for a few posts. I was an asshole of a noob. But what did the loungers do? They created a thread titled "Hey Yougumpy", and said welcome, and asked me to introduce myself and tried to get to know me.

KTMay also started a "Bruce of the week", which is just a little thing recognizing new posters in the Lounge. That was pretty nice of her.

Let me give you some examples of Loungers being welcoming to noobs:

IKNow is Great (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=18950&t=299817)

afusinatto is bruce of the week (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=18950&t=299387)

there are many more examples you can find.

Maybe you are mad that we refer to them as a "bruce". But, that sure as hell sounds a lot more welcoming than, as you write yourself, "n00b".

regardless of that, it was CD who posted the thread before they even knew i was a know-it-all. CD had made a haiku thread, and I posted "Haikus suck." CD, instead of bashing me, created a thread asking to get to know me.

i guess my point is, is that even though we use terms such as "bruce", it doesnt mean that we are bashing them. Yes, there have been sometimes when people (including myself) have looked down upon noobs, but as a whole, i think every noob has felt welcome.

Nonetheless Raddish, thank you for this announcement. It means well and should have a positive effect on the Lounge.

Some of you go on and on about brooces and sheilas, or even making fun of each other, relentlessly. It does get a little intimidating for a noob who would like to post in the lounge. It’s easy to say “well, they should have join in and we would have welcomed them,” Altho’ you have welcomed some but think of others who may have stayed away because of all this nonsense. It’s all talk now as we’ll never know if there’s a noob out there who wanted to speak but was afraid to.

I am already seeing positive effects. I see several new threads by SDers I’m not familiar with.

Thank you Mods.

Sorry, I am notoriously slow at getting back to PM's.

The key here is what is perceived as fun, and what is perceived as vitriolic as I mentioned in my above post. Welcoming someone to the Lounge is good. Hazing them to the point that they don't want to come back is NOT good.

i agree with this. at first i was a little miffed that i was being called a bruce because for the LIFE of me, i had no clue what it meant. but by simply asking, "what does that mean!?" SOME people offered up a little background info.

This is a good move I guess, but if the mods are gonna crack down on the noob bashing then maybe they should also crack the whip right away on the noobs when they first come in and start getting out of hand. That is what started the recent phase of noob bashing in the first place and it snowballed from there. Someone new comes in and starts pushing the limits a little--maybe without even knowing it--and when nothing is done we take it into our own hands.

I know, I know, that's what the mod alert button is for, but I don't get much time here now, partly by choice, and I don't want to spend it policing innapropriate posts. If the mods can't handle it get more mods.

This will eliminate some of the crap around here but it won't be enough to make me want to spend a lot of time here any more.

As someone who is relatively new here, I was really happy to read the announcement when I peaked into The Lounge tonight. I pop in now and again with the intention of getting to know others and getting known, as I spend more and more time on this site mostly in The Deals section and really enjoy it...I probably spend more time on this site daily than any other at this point! I think people on here seem nice for the most part, but I always felt everyone already knew each other and had their inside jokes; I felt as though I'd be intruding as a "noob" or as whatever the term du jour was for "new member". I think it's a really kind and welcoming announcement to make...thank you very much for that. :)

I think it's a really kind and welcoming announcement to make...thank you very much for that. :)

With all due respect and welcome, everybody is new at some point, everybody has to start somewhere....it's reality and life. It would be unreal to walk into a room and expect to be known.

I agree! At times it can get a bit harsh here (Newbies included) I thought it was about the deals. Savings the dough, getting more moola, greenbacks, coin, dollars, dinero, mucho pesos, euros, or money.

Here for the deal, baby. (and fabulous deals they can be!)

You know it's gotten a little out of hand when the first time people post a deal, they beg for mercy. Please don't hurt me, here's my deal. That's just wrong.

Being new myself, I also have an observation. I've noticed the people that seem to be the "most coarse" on new people were recently new themselves. Many haven't even been here a year, and are already calling people names / judging them in general, like they've been here forever. So sad. :shake:

I am also happy to see this action taken by the mods. Good job!

I have to agree with Savio on this one. I used to post a lot more in the lounge but quit because I thought it was pretty cliquey. Not that it ruined my life, mind you:), but I just didn't feel welcome there.

I think that's the point. Of course there are cliques or a feeling of not belonging if you have to "know what's been going on" in order to participate. Plus the fact that you need to "remind people who you are" sounds like the newcomers have to make a name for themselves in order to be considered "part of the group."

There were fights, cliques, sex threads, flirt threads, gangs, PW's, noob-namecalling and much more. WAAAY before many of the people that are in the lounge wever ever a gleam in Mr. SD's eye. So can we finally stop complaining about the lounge?

If you don't like the way it is, get in there and make your own threads. You can influence the lounge just as much as anyone else can.

The Lounge has gone through many phases, most of which your join date indicates you have not experienced. While I'm sure it's easy to search and find examples of threads of a similar nature to more modern threads, you'll have to forgive me if I rely on my own experience. I hate to pull the "I was there and you weren't" card, but oh well.

And the fact that such threads exist is *not* the point. The elements of what people are complaining about have always been around, in various proportions. Over time the tides shift, and so it goes. The Lounge has been much, much worse (IMHO) at various points in time; that doesn't mean it's perfect now. It would be easy, but unwise, to write people's complaints off as nostalgia.
