You can get credit card points for buying US $1 coins at face value with free shipping. Some people just deposit them in the bank, but it is more ethical to spend them at stores, etc. Apparently this has been around for awhile, but I could not find it on slickdeals.

Yeah, the face value + free ship promotion has been going on for years (at least since the introduction of the presidential $1 coins, if not earlier). I remember hearing a couple years ago that creditors have started processing Mint transactions as advances—is that the case? Haven't had a chance to read the recent NPR story

I did this years ago and made about $500 in cash back. The banks just send them back to the Feds. The US Mint usually overnights the coins and they're about 60 lbs per box. You're paying for it somehow. My ups driver was getting pissed carrying those boxes up my steps.

$500 in cash back at 1% means you bought $50,000 worth of coins? Holy crap. :lmao:

Old news.. i've been doing this religiously for the past 2 years. I drop them off my local Chase every time I go to the grocery - $2000 worth every 2 weeks.

I've become pretty good friends with the UPS guy and the Chase bank manager coz of this. I've confessed what I'm doing and they think its a great idea.

No one is using these coins and the mint continues to make and store huge quantities of these costing taxpayers mucho dinero! Despite no demand they continue to pump these out of the mint. The news article below says they are spending something like $650,000 just to build a new storage facility to house these puppies. One billion of these made at .32 cents each and they will continue this till 2017. And we have a debt crisis..... wonder why?

Take a look at abc news from last night about this:

Anyone have a list of what credit card companies see this as a cash advance. Also, any one had problems with their bank accepting the coins?

Bardnois
07-15-2011, 04:32 AM
Some people have reported issues with their bank when they continually bring in large quantities of these but most accept them without any problems. There was - and I suppose still is - a very lengthy thread on this on another forum that has the words "Fat" and "Wallet" in the name.

As far the the coins themselves are concerned, I think they would be better than paper dollars if they didn't make them almost exactly the size of a quarter. Make them the size of the old silver dollars and I'd be glad to use them regularly.

You're right. The treasury should eliminate the one and two dollar paper notes and also eliminate the penny.

From the website:
"The immediate bank deposit of $1 coins ordered through this Program does not result in their introduction into circulation and, therefore, does not comply with the intended purpose of the Program."

All our coins have gold in them, or they would just be slabs of crap metal. This particular coin is gold mixed with platinum.

Little research and you will find why they are required by law to print certain numbers of these coins.

Waitaminite....

So how much does it cost to print $1 bills, and how often do they need to be replaced and at what cost? I think these coins would stand up to circulation much longer than folding money.

Folks, when you rip off the government, you only stick it to yourself in the form of increased taxes and reduced funding to crucial programs. :(

why are you worried about the goverment losing few million dollars that can actual benfit people get free things? shouldn't you be more worried about the trillions that are used for wars and the military or how about the trillions that are used for bailouts or maybe the trillions that are stolen and pocketed such as the 2 trillions american dollars which are unaccounted for in the federal reserve.

The gov't just had to pay $300M to warehouse all these coins because they can't get them out in circulation. Me thinks that if the gov't actually gave a damn about wasting our $$ they'd stop printing these things in the first place :P

Maybe a couple years too late, but the Mint finally killed this deal:

"Dear United States Mint Direct Ship Customer:

The United States Mint has eliminated the credit and debit card purchase of $1 Coins through its Direct Ship Program effective July 20, 2011. Customers who wish to purchase $1 coins through the Direct Ship Program can still do so by using a wire transfer, money order or check. Customers who wish to purchase the coins by wire transfer may fax their order to (202)756-6585. Customers interested in purchasing by money order or check may do so by submitting your request in writing to the following address:

United States Mint
PO Box 71192
Philadelphia, PA 19176-6192
Please download the order form which includes wire transfer information and follow the instructions provided on the form. http://www.usmint.gov/downloads/directShip/orderform.pdf

If you currently have an open $1 coin Direct Ship order placed with the United States Mint, that order will be cancelled. Please resubmit your order by wire transfer, check or money order using the order form. The Mint has determined that this policy change is prudent due to ongoing activity by individuals purchasing $1 coins with credit cards, accumulating frequent flyer miles, and then returning coins to local banks. Local banks, in turn, return coins to the Federal Reserve. While not illegal, this activity is a clear abuse and misuse of the program which was intended to facilitate the use of $1 coins in cash transactions.

The Mint has undertaken several aggressive internal and external actions to mitigate this issue, including restricting chronic and repeated use of credit cards, contacting customers who frequently placed large numbers of orders to ensure they were using the coins for legitimate business purchases, and other measures. While these efforts eliminated a significant amount of misuse in the program, we believe some abuse still exists. Eliminating the credit and debit card purchase of the $1 coin is the next step in our efforts to root out abuse in this program and ensure it is better targeted toward fulfilling its intended purpose – which is to get the $1 coin into greater circulation.

Thank you for your understanding and your continued support of the $1 Coin Program.

The United States Mint"

It says all open orders will be cancelled. I made an order last month sometime and it was still backordered, so I assume that order will be cancelled.
