She'll be 33 weeks pregnant Tuesday and over the weekend she was having a lot of contractions. This is our first baby and the doctor said she needs to go to the hospital if she gets more than 6 an hour. A side story on this was the doctor was kind of bitchy to my wife b/c she was actually working before we went and kind of belittled her on why she was just now calling and not at the hospital yet.

So we get to the hospital, they hook her up and we see she's having them every 1-3 minutes. We stayed from 8pm to 3am that night while they monitored her. They didn't let her eat anything and gave her some chicken broth and jello. Throughout the whole night they checked my wife's cervix about 6 times to make sure she wasn't dialating or thinning out. They gave her some medicine b/c they found a trace amount of bacteria in her urine and her contractions could have been brought on by a UTI. My wife felt like she has to pee every 10 minutes. Then later that night they finally gave her a shot that was supposed to stop her contractions which eventually they did. After the contractions finally stopped we went home.

Then Saturday came and she started having them once again. So once again we get to the hospital. This time the nurse was very nice and seemed very knowledgeable as she had 4 kids already. She pretty much said that the contractions were normal as long as they didn't hurt (Which they didn't). Instead of waiting all fricking night, they gave her the same shot again and monitored her. It was a much shorter visit, but the nurse was also quick to say she thought the nurses were wrong the previous night in checking her cervix so many times. She said that checking it so many times could actually adversely affect her. I just know my wife was almost crying at the end of the first night when they kept saying they needed to check her cervix again and again.

Oh and the baby is fine

I just have to say, I'm glad I'm not the one pregnant. I'm just ready for the baby to come. My wife is very irritable and very self conscious of her weight. She's got a few smaller stretch marks on her sides and is dreading getting more. It'll be interesting to see how she feels about wanting a 2nd afterwards lol.

Cliffs:
Wife had contractions every 1-3 minutes and is only 33 weeks in
1st night Nurses sucked and made wife very uncomfortable
2nd day nurse was very nice and we left feeling a lot better and everything is normal

Did they ever tell you as a patient you have the right to ask for a new nurse if you don't like the one you're assigned? Ask for the head RN and request a new one.

Nurses were probably checking her so much on doc's orders. Docs make my ass twitch.

I hope your DW and DB are okay. Keep us updated.

Not that I can remember. We were the only patients that night too. The nurse was nice, but after talking to the nurse on the second day, she seemed to be A LOT more knowledgeable. With this being our first kid, this is all new to us. So we're pretty much just taking in what we're told and going from there.

My wife felt like she has to pay every 10 minutes.
You would think they would just send a final bill after her stay. ;)

Glad everything is OK.

This is not a stuation where you can think "let me bite it". You need to be more aggressive if required, If you think you need a different nurse, then tell your gynecologist that you are not interested with the same nurse attending your wife. period.

But If you think the nurse and her methods are within acceptable limits, then it is OK, you are the judge.

I have kaiser and every time I took my wife, there is always a different nurse, some are more knowledgeable and others are not, so I tailored myself to be more strict with them in general, I make sure I ask them questions and know what test they are doing and why they are doing it.

To be honest, we were surprised at times about doctors and nurses who we thought they know what they were doing is actually wrong later. So it is always a good practice be bold, ask questions and be informative. Also educate yourself with information from the doctor or hospital website.

Don't educate yourself from the regular junk sites in the internet, since anyone can have a website and can write anything on the internet.

so always check the doctors website or the hospitals website for general information.

Yup, if you are not comfortable with the nurse, ask for another one. I did after my daughter was born and the same one who almost killed us (OD'd me on a narcotic) came walking in the next day. I refused to give her my daughter, and told my doctor that I would walk (well, stumble since I had a c-section and legs were numbish) out before she touched her. She glared at us when we left 4 days later, but I felt a lot better.

Good luck and looking forward to the pics. :D

Was your wife the one in the medium to short hospital gown? If, so I checked her cervix as well. Couldn't really tell much since I'm not a doctor or a nurse, but if you need something, I'll be at her cervix...
