Amazon gives away paid Android apps for free daily. Follow on Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/DailyFreeUS
Does this work for Tablets?
Yes and No. It will run, but it was not designed for tablets. There is a seperate app for tablets called SwiftKey Tablet X (http://slickdeals.net/?&u2=http://www.amazon.com/TouchType-Ltd-SwiftKey-Tablet-X/dp/B005D9MTSY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1311261951&sr=1-2) [amazon.com (http://slickdeals.net/?&u2=http://www.amazon.com/TouchType-Ltd-SwiftKey-Tablet-X/dp/B005D9MTSY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=mobile-apps&qid=1311261951&sr=1-2)]
For those of you not familiar with this app you need to give it a week or so to learn how you type before it truly shines. Once it learns your typing style, it'll suggest your next word after typing the first 2 letters 80% of the time (my own stats, not official). [Could you please clarify the previous sentence? Thanks!] You can't judge it after using it for one day.

My favorite keyboard. Even if you like something else its silly not to grab it for free.
They greatly improved predictions in this new version, but I will say it can be non responsive at times. It may just be my ROM, but I never noticed it in earlier versions (including the beta).

It doesn't say anywhere in that video that they're sending it back to Swiftkey's servers. It's just pulling stuff from other apps (with your permission) and using them to improve prediction. It all stays locally on the phone memory/sdcard. The only thing you need to worry about is having your phone lost or stolen.

That's an ignorant statement. While I appreciate your concern for security please do a simple search before making accusations.
http://support.swiftkey.net/knowledgebase/articles/9099-a-warning-says-swiftkey-may-collect-personal-data
It can access your gmail, twitter, facebook and sms through those sites APIs if you allow it to (BTW, if you're putting CC info or passwords in any of the those places you deserve them to get stolen). Doing so gives it the information to personalize it to you.
If you personally are not willing to take a risk that's cool, but say "I don't trust things I know nothing about because I didn't take the time to learn." Don't crap and a great piece of software and an even better deal.

I've been using the previous version on my NookColor and it is surprising how fast you can finish a sentence with typing only few letters.
The tablet version in that you tube video looks amazing ($5).

On my Samsung Captivate when typing a text message horizontal, I cant just hold the delete button to continuously delete the previous letter. I have to keep tapping the delete button to delete a whole word. Does anyone else have this problem? It works horizontal though.

damn, just bought this for $3.99 earlier today. Great app, been using it through beta.
I used swype previously but swiftkey was much better at predicting what i wanted to say. I frequently write the same things to friends, i.e. "What are you doing tonight?" and i would begin to type w, h, then "what" would come up, select that, "are" would come up, etc.
It would also learn new words fairly quickly. I oftentimes use the word "poundtown" as in, "are you gonna bring her to poundtown tonight?" and it learned the word (and predicted that I wanted to write it) fairly accurately.

Query: For iTunes/app purchases, you don't necessarily need a linked iOS device to "purchase" these apps (I say purchase lightly as they're free on promo).
I'm currently deciding between an Android device and the iPhone when I upgrade soon. I don't know which I'll get just yet, but I do want to keep apps for both, just in case.
Is there any way I can download Android apps such as these (particularly, this one), without having a linked Android device?

I get too much Swypo when I Swype. SwiftKey will get used to your typing style and predicts based on that. Swype will give you words that you've never heard of before.
If we're talking about texting and driving, Swype would be better since you can do it without looking at the screen. However, texting and driving kills so don't do it.
My girlfriend enjoys Swyping because she doesn't have to make it obvious when she's texting at work meetings. Every now and then, she'll make a Swypo and I'll laugh at her for it.

I used to use Swype exclusively, but over the past few months, it's been nothing but SwiftKey. Its prediction is great, so after a week or so of using it, about half the time you can just hit the spacebar to finish the word you were starting to type. And my favorite feature is when you fudge up a word, you can just wipe your finger across the keyboard to erase it.

There's an Android emulator in the Android Software Development Kit at developer.android.com. That *MIGHT* work, but you'll basically need to install everything necessary for an Android developer. The emulator can be launched from Eclipse after you have everything setup.

Just log into your Amazon account and "buy" it... It'll be saved in your account until you have an Android device. Once you have it, just install the app and everything that you "bought" on your PC will show up under that same account on the phone/tablet. Similar to iTunes process.

I did the unthinkable and tried to use my Windows Mobile's phone number to see if I could even register the phone to download apps...no go.

To me, actually typing is faster than Swype and this is the best keyboard layout I've found (by a little bit) with the best prediction/spell check (by far). The whole concept of preloading your vocabulary through voluntarily giving access to email, etc is brilliant. Note that you can also remove vocabulary words as well when you find things you'll never write.

takes time to get used to this app. I have an optimus S, which has a tiny 3.2 display. doesnt work well with swype due to my screen protector. this app works ok, and the prediction is pretty good. The more you use it, the better the app becomes, but it does take quite a bit of time investment. I tend to type pretty quick with this app.
swype works pretty well, but not so good with a screen protector. this app takes time to become a very good app, but with a little patience, it's a pretty nifty app.
only downside is that there are two different versions, one for tablets......................................
that's kind of lame. Thumb keyboard works for phone or tablet, but it's prediction is nothing compared to swiftkey; lays out great for tablet or phone.

To answer peoples question on how these deals work on Amazon Market, once you get these free apps, it is linked to your account permanently. I use my phone as my primary android device, but just logged in with me $66 chiPad and am able to still download say "Plants vs Zombies" free onto it, which was a free app months ago. There's no harm in grabbing the app and not installing it.
I was a hardcore swype user but this Swiftkey is in a whole other league. It gets to the point that it guesses entire sentences when you just type the first letter or no letters at all. Also beta just expired so this is an awesome deal.

One of the versions of swype saved passwords, but they were not sending it back to their servers. This app doesn't seem to remember passwords. Logging in to accounts is a way for the engine to build it's prediction strength, and it is optional. You can always do it the conventional way by typing a lot.

Dammit amazon...i bought this like 3 days ago, where were you then! Grabbed another copy anyway, not sure I'll ever had a need for it.
This is a fantastic keyboard, predictions are top notch and its very easy to add words it does not know/predict. One thing i love about it as well is the fact that it has 3 default themes now, the default theme looks really nice on my HTC EVO 3D.

Seeing as 2.1 isn't Froyo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history), probably best you don't mess with anything.
Next, it's free. Download it, install it. If you don't like it or it doesn't work on 2.1 Eclair, then uninstall it and move on.

I really liked this keyboard, but the voice recognition is horrible. I always use voice recognition to text while driving, the stock 2.3 keyboards recognition works great for me, it may miss a word every now and then, but it gets about 95%. Swiftkey x is lucky if it gets it right 25% of the time.

No, he is not right, and you're both wrong. You cannot do that. It seems everyone forgets what happened when they downloaded their first free app from Amazon. You HAVE to install the Amazon Appstore ON an Android device first, open it, then log in. Once you do so, and you update your payment/one-click options, you can then just visit the Appstore online at any time and click to "buy" free apps, which will always be saved to your account.
Trust me, I've tried many times before, and just tried again with another Amazon account I didn't have linked yet. I got this bright idea to open two backup or dummy accounts for the express purpose of downloading each app, each day, and have been doing so almost since the very beginning. Each days I log into all of them, including my real personal one and just click buy, log out, log in, click buy, repeat until each account has the app. You can share this log in with others, too. I have at least 4 family members using one of my dummy accounts and they all get the free apps to use on their phones. Technically, they could have used my personal one as well.
Emulators MAY work, as the other person suggested. Another is to ask a dear Android user to uninstall the Appstore app, and reinstall it and let you try to log in to creat the "first link". I'm not sure if it will work but I know you can't simply log out of the Appstore app. I went a step further and just hard reset my phone for each account I wanted to create. I had Nandroid images so it was easy to do and then just get my phone back to the way it was in a snap. Something to keep in mind: you might want to make sure it's a more modern/advanced Android phone or you MIGHT run into messages for certain apps that it's not compatible with you device.
Enterprising SDers may have realized that at some point you could sell the Amazon account with all the apps attached. :) What would you give for an Appstore account that had 101 (and counting) paid apps already attached (missed about 3 days in the beginning, I think)?

I figured since ipod/iphone app threads were posted in the deal section, I would do the same.
I was planning on buying this last night but I fell asleep. What a nice surprise this morning to see it free. After installing it, though, I found that it didn't keep the data from the previous installation of Swiftkey X Beta, meaning it has to relearn all my typing habits again.

I can understand the preference for Swype/Flex. however once you start using Swift Key and it learns your typing patterns it becomes pretty powerful. Now I can type a full email response in less than 20 seconds because the keyboard is able to predict 60-80% of what I am trying to type.

Check reviews if you have an earlier (Original) droid
Earlier versions of this app seemed to work much better than the latest.
I had it installed (paid for it) and actuallly uninstalled after updating it becasue it started to lag lock up my Droid. Also Note that this app is a memory HOG.
for newer phones there does not seem to to be the same issue.

You have to install the appstore before you can buy any apps. It's just how amazon does it.
Oh I see, Thanks. So no way to get apps from Amazon until you have an android device with Amazon App store installed. That's a shame, but such is life.

This is a great keyboard. I'm not too thrilled with the theme, but it's definitely a step up for text entry. I've been using it for a few days and with the predictive text, the stats page said I've increased efficiency by 32%. It's awesome to type the first word of a phrase and then hit space five times and have a complete text sent out

What I do not understand is how to switch between languages during typing :( Default Android keyboard has special button for that. With SwiftKey I downloaded/installed English and Russian language packs, both are checkmarked in SwiftKey settings, but how do I switch between them when I'm typing in russian and want to insert "Android" in english ?
Could not find answer on Swiftkey site, FAQs, forums, etc :(

Thanks, but that seems like a bit of overkill just to get a few apps. There has to be an easier solution?
I tried this previously and I gave it another shot. It seems as I need to have the Amazon appstore installed on a phone/device before anything of value occurs. It seems like I'm out of luck, I suppose.
I did the unthinkable and tried to use my Windows Mobile's phone number to see if I could even register the phone to download apps...no go.
Why not just find a friend you trust, and have them log into the Amazon AppStore with your account from their device? There also are Android images that can be run in virtual machines if you wanted to do it via your computer without dealing with the emulator.

For those of you not familiar with this app you need to give it a week or so to learn how you type before it truly shines. Once it learns your typing style it'll suggest your next work between 0-2 letters of typing 80% of the time (my own stats, not official). You can't judge it after using it for one day.

If you swipe your finger from right to left, it deletes the prior word.

Don't see the option. If it helps, just "teach" it the word you want, even if it's already in the predictions, but with lowercase. It will show up later. For example, "lol" always came up "LOL", which drove me nuts because it wasn't laughing that hard. So I taught it lowercase "lol" and now it comes up.

It almost looks as if you're adding something to conversation by showing people how simple a solution there was for what they're looking for (I'm wondering if you even realized that the link you provided simply pointed to someone's dissatisfaction on the lack of the feature). Instead, maybe you're trying to say that you're appalled that people didn't Google to find out that something didn't actually work.
Did you stop to think that maybe they, too, were "boggled" by the lack of such basic functionality and find it hard to believe that it doesn't actually exist - thereby causing them to ask on these forums if there was a way to achieve it? No?

Swype drove me crazy for many reasons. I finally got FlexT9 and can't believe anyone still uses Swype. I've used Swiftykey X, but without the ability to swipe words, it didn't compare to FlexT9.
The only thing FlexT9 is missing is the ability to edit the dictionary.

That's your opinion. Personally, I hate Swype. Great concept, poor execution. Forget about this keyboard in this deal not having capitalization options - Swype doesn't have a dictionary solution that won't make you want to go lay down in traffic. Adding and deleting from their dictionary bank is like doing the hokey pokey. Combine that with the tendency to continue picking up and replacing words you want with names from your contact list, reviving words you "deleted", and I'd rather pull out a typewriter and try connecting it to my phone than use Swype again.

you really cant evaluate this app properly after "just downloading it" it takes a good week for the prediction engine to become very good.

Swiftkey (also got it from Amazon Free App of the Day) has been my keyboard of choice for several months now, so when Swiftkey X came out about a week ago with an introductory price of $1.99 I bought it immediately. Rats.
Swiftkey X is definitely the best Android keyboard that I've ever had (I was a big fan of Swype before I knew Swiftkey). My most favorite feature is the multiple language packs active at the same time. It's perfect for those of us who are bilingual and often use words from multiple languages while typing.
If you dont let it access your email, then the whole concept of the keyboard is useless, better use the standard keyboard then..

Posted this from the application. I've found it is doing a good job, though I just got this new phone.
Swipe always screws up and is slow. If you want you can also use speech to text and it gives you a few different choices.
Curses on this phone, I'll be on slickdeals so much more now.
Also I decided not to let it into my email, passwords quite often get sent into there and I can wait for it to pick up on my style. "out of the box" it seems to be doing a good job though.

Excellent keyboard.
I've had the Swype beta for a while, and I did like it... but this newest version of Swiftkey X (during the beta, at least) was excellent. I had the previous version, and it was decent, but slower and less accurate than the new one. I love the new one, and it has become my (and my wife's) standard keyboard. I'm glad I didn't pay for the $1.99 upgrade, as I almost was going to - this is a great deal!

This is hands down the best keyboard I have used so far! The ones I have used is flex t9, and swype. I liked swype a little bit but their inability to learn new words was very lacking. Also I feel that after I type a word 10 mins they shouldn't be recommending me a word that I have never used over my word.
Swiftkey's got it right, you type it around 3 times and they'll know it for sure.

I am skeptical about the requirement to allow installation from unknown sources. I realize that it is likely a limitation that Android imposes that does not allow other stores such as Amazon to install software as trusted software, but I prefer to avoid doing that unless I really want to and/or need to. Allowing installation from an unknown source opens the door to malicious software. Hopefully everyone has antivirus software that will protect them but advising people to ignore concerns such as that is irresponsible.

I know it is an unreasonable requirement to read the instructions, but I think that is what you have to do. Or watch the video. The instructions clearly state what must be done "to allow downloads from other places".

There is your ignorant statement. Nothing anyone does should make it okay to commit a crime against you.
Disagree, but point well taken. I believe in personal responsibility. If your careless actions cause something to happen to you, you absolutely deserve it. If you're texting or emailing passwords and all of a sudden get "hacked" it's likely because you put your information out there. Maybe I'm a bad person for thinking so, but you deserve it if it happens.
If you dont let it access your email, then the whole concept of the keyboard is useless, better use the standard keyboard then..
Untrue. Again you're making statements you know nothing about. I don't let it access my email. I do let it access twitter and facebook where I don't expect privacy. It works great. It took a little longer to get to know me, but completely worth it.
If you're happy with stock keyboard, that's great, but please don't spread misinformation.

Not unreasonable to me, if I missed a link, instructions or video, point me to it so I can read or watch.

for those already using swype and considering trying this one out, i highly recommend giving it a chance. I thought swype was great (enough) but glad I downloaded this one and I will be sticking with it. The interface is faster and more responsive than swype, word prediction is very good, and most importantly, the spacebar is large. With swype i spend way too much time deleting periods and I know I can't be alone.

Are you sure about it? Last month, they updated the software through OTA and now you can get any third party apps on the Inspire.. I have been using Amazon as well as few others like getJar.. I think, you need to change the setting on your phone to allow OTA updates...

I've only used it for a few hours but so far I like it. I wouldn't say its much better than what i had before but its definitely an improvement. I would say try it. You can easily uninstall it and forget you ever had it if you dont like it.
There is one thing i like the most so far is that you have more control over your typing, you can download language packs, you can rearrange the keyboard in qwerty or a different style, choose different themes, etc.
You really can't go wrong either way

wow, by your theory I shouldn't even be using credit cards. Tell you what, if someone wants to hack your phone, email, etc, that someone would do it either way and there is little you can do about it. People hack into financial services firms and Chase sends you back a letter saying how sorry they are your id is compromised. That's when I would worry. Until then, paranoia doesn't actually help.. at least not in the long run.

also my opinion on this kb vs swype.. NO comparison, swiftkey blows any other keyboard ive used out of the water. swype is cool at first but you quickly realize it wastes more time than anything. i've used swiftkey for less than 5 hours and it is already predicting my text like a champ. before swift key I was using the android keyboard over swype,

Awesome! I had installed the Beta previously, when it expired I didn't know what to do. Been trying some different keyboards to see if I liked them, none have clicked like Swiftkey has. To find this free is very cool, now I can keep using Swiftkey (my vote for best Android keyboard) without a nag screen and I don't have to write a check. Very, very cool.

No, he is not right, and you're both wrong. You cannot do that. It seems everyone forgets what happened when they downloaded their first free app from Amazon. You HAVE to install the Amazon Appstore ON an Android device first, open it, then log in to Amazon. From your computer, you update your payment/one-click options to active. You can then just visit the Appstore online from your computer at any time and click to "buy" free apps, which will always be saved to your account.
Trust me, I've tried many times before, and just tried again with another Amazon account I didn't have linked yet to a phone.
I tried to clearify your first paragraph. Thank for writing this. This was very helpful.
From the phone, I could switch Amazon accounts by deleting the Amazon Appstore app and reloading it and signing in again to another account.
I gave you reputation points for the info.

Ironically, Swype also has that warning if you have to install it. I have to think that if it came native on the phone that agreement is implicit somewhere...
For reference, see the following install tutorial from Swype - specifically, step 3 under Next, enable Swype as your input method.
