Gargoyle Firmware Instructions
I recommend reading through the OpenWRT Wiki (http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/wndr3700)for this router before continuing. (Gargoyle is based on OpenWRT) The process for flashing to gargoyle is really quite simple.

If you get a V1 router, use this firmware gargoyle_1.3.16-ar71xx-wndr3700-squashfs-factory-NA.img (http://www.gargoyle-router.com/downloads/images/ar71xx/gargoyle_1.3.16-ar71xx-wndr3700-squashfs-factory-NA.img)
If you get a V2 router, use this firmware gargoyle_1.3.16-ar71xx-wndr3700v2-squashfs-factory-NA.img (http://www.gargoyle-router.com/downloads/images/ar71xx/gargoyle_1.3.16-ar71xx-wndr3700v2-squashfs-factory-NA.img)

Update via the normal Netgear web-interface and voila, Gargoyle!

DNS Server Fix
People who want to keep this operational with the standard firmware will need this info from post 24. If you purchase this router, consider printing this out and taping it to the back because you're likely to stumble on this problem a few months in.

If the router intermittently can't load web pages, but seems to be able to consistently transfer data that has already started downloading or streaming (like a movie), there is a known compatibility issue with the DNS servers provided by Time Warner and Comcast (maybe more). You can redirect the router to an alternate DNS server, such as openDNS to fix the issue. Go to your router's Basic Settings config page and under the Domain Name Services (DNS) Addresses section, choose to specify your own Primary and Secondary DNS servers using the two IPaddress shown below. Hit apply and save and you should be set.

openDNS DNS server IPaddress is:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

DD-WRT I installed DD-WRT when I first got this router. I could only get ~5 Mbps download on most of my wireless devices. A couple months later I flashed back to stock firmware and I got full speed and better coverage. The stock firmware is actually really good and it has a lot of features, so I'd only install DD-WRT if you really need it.

I installed DD-WRT and nothing happened. The lights started cycling, but that was it...and no amount of pushing the factory default reset switch brought it back. However, you can TFTP (google TFTP wndr3700) into the router and flash the original firmware back onto it. You will need to download the original firmware and a tftp program. Should this happen to you, you can get the router ready to receive a TFTP install by holding down the reset switch, turning on the unit, and continuing to hold the switch down for 45 seconds. The router then enters into a different mode where it is ready to accept the firmware. Good luck!

I just purchased an Asus N16 for $65 AR....but the Netgear seems a little better. Both can have a USB print server, but this one can do 5ghz over the Asus.

I will stay with the Asus since I need Tomato installed and maybe I can take advantage of the higher RAM in the gigabit ports.
So I wil pass on this even though this one looks better.

Never got a refirb router, or ordered anything from dailysteals (good reseller ratings though). But I've gotta get this. Hopefully I can end up selling my other 3 routers, I really need to clean house...

Not going to ddwrt it until I know it's stable and good2go.

This does not have a print server, it's for USB storage. Unless you're talking about a 3rd party firmware that implements it.

gosh...I've only had my RT-N16 for about a year now...still relatively new. What excuse can I come up with to splurge on this :lmao: The 5Ghz is very tempting, but I don't care much about simultaneous dual band cuz if I were to transition to 5Ghz, everything will go to it and nothing will be left in the 2.4ghz spectrum...

Do you use wireless all the time? I don't think you really need 5ghz unless you are hardcore wireless streamer. I heard many positive reviews about N16. How's the connection? I was going to recommend a friend.

I purchased this router from Fry's a LONG time ago and LOVED IT no issues. Recently I have been having issues with the DNS server (works perfect with thats computer hooked up WAN but anything else wireless or ethernet the connection would fail DNS randomly) and it had been driving me nuts for a week.. I finally I dug into it deeper and found out its a issue with the latest firmware version and my ISP Time Warner.. Its a KNOWN issue that's been around for a while now although I just now recently began having issues with.

It basically loses DNS name resolution ability after running for a while using Time Warner's DNS servers. The DNS server I am using now is openDNS. The DNS server IPaddress is:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Go to your router's Basic Settings config page and under the Domain Name Services (DNS) Addresses section, choose to specify your own Primary and Secondary DNS servers using the two IPaddress shown above. Hit apply and save and you should be set.

it's rock solid...running on tomatoUSB. 3 computers in the house...2 connected via wifi and 1 via gigabit port to the router. No problems at all. Downloads always get around 40mbps via wifi all the time.

For people who wants to run tomatoUSB on this thing. As for now, I don't think this router runs tomatoUSB. At least it's not on their support list. TomatoUSB development has been on hault for quiet a while now. Not sure if any update on supporting list gonna roll out soon x(
was gonna pull the trigger on this one too if it runs tomato. Cant deal with all the hassel setting up USB devices on ddwrt.

He is referring to Tomato USB on his RT-N16.

The WNDR3700 does not, and will never support tomato. Tomato runs on limited broadcom based routers only. WNDR3700 is atheros based. Your best option in this case is DD-Wrt.

its actually a good idea to use BOTH 2.4ghz and 5ghz bands simultaneously if you have multiple devices... since if you have multiple 5ghz only devices, the spectrum will get saturated and you get your bandwidth divided by the number of devices you have. i run my gaming PC and HTPC on 5ghz and my laptops on 2.4ghz... that way i can maximize the bandwidth for both bands

also 2.4ghz has better range than 5ghz so thats another reason i put my laptops on it

From what I've gathered:

- V2 = 16 MB Flash / V1 = 8 MB Flash (might be important if you run alternate firmware?)
- Internal antenna changes: some say V1 has better 5 GHz range/performance

It's networking equipment, you can hook it up pretty much anyway you want ... doesn't mean it'll work, but you can :)

Why do you want to "hook 2 of them together"? Wireless bridge? What exactly are you trying to accomplish and I'll give you my 2 cents ... I work for a ginormous networking company if you're curious as to where I learnt my know-how.

Just a heads up that up here at work we've noticed AVS checks have gotten crazy stringent in the last few months. We're seeing billing address mismatch rejections for something as minuscule as a guy entering 123 Any St. when his banks record has 123 Any st. For some banks, capitalization, spacing, punctuation are being checked for absolute precision it seems lately.

When we bump into this fun brick wall we point people to their bank to either A: get the precise billing address the bank has on file or B: tell the bank how to change the file. After that the person has no trouble at all.

Yes you can. But from what I see in the config screen the repeating function is only via wireless

If you hardwire the two routers together they will not act as one virtual wireless connection. Instead they will appear as two routers in your available connections, to your PC.

You can make the Wireless Repeating function more secure by limiting connections to specific MAC addresses, for both routers. This way if some one were to crack your WEP key, they would still not be able to authenticate to either router.

I have this router and after a firmware upgrade it's been fantastic. I paid almost $100 more so this is a great deal.

Anyway, I don't know if you meant it generically or not, but don't use WEP. It's old, it's easy to break, and you'll be sorry. Use WPA2 instead.

This is very tempting. I had gotten a E4200 when it was on sale at BB for $135 but I had too many issues trying to get it to work with my uverse setup. I'm curious if I order this if I will run into similar problems. Don't want the hassle of trying not being able to go to the store to return something. I have been wanting to upgrade my DIR655 for a while just to get a dual band simultaneous router like this.

I wouldn't even load DD-WRT on this unless you're sure you need it. Just remember to update to the latest firmware for the IPv6 support.

I use one of these in conjunction with a Windows 7 Media Center setup to stream the video files to my 360s and PCs.

What is draft-2.0 wireless N? Is that the latest revision?

Edit: I bought one anyway, but I would appreciate it if someone could answer my question if you know...I've been googling, but having no luck. ;(

My brother has been using this router for the past 1.5 years and it has been rock solid, never needs rebooted or anything, just constant internet 24-7. He has about 10 devices connected to it too, 6 of which are wireless. He paid about 180 dollars for it, so this is an amazing deal.

Also, for those of you that are worried about DailySteals don't be. I have placed multiple orders with them in the past and they are always reliable. Only problem is their shipping is really slow. It can take up 10 days for them to ship your order and they use FedEx Smartpost or an equally shitty shipping service which takes like 1000 days to deliver. Of course the deal is worth the wait time in my opinion. I once got a 70 dollar speaker bracket set from them for 10 bucks, had to wait almost 15 days for them to be delivered, but they did show up. lol.

why does the description say n600?
My birthday was last week. I didn't ask for anyone to get me anything, but a few people did anyway. To be honest, it was a little embarrassing and I felt a bit like a kid. Oh well, everyone there made it less awkward for me so that was good. The only problem came with one present I got: the Netgear N600 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router.

When I unwrapped the gift, I had no idea what it was. It took a great deal of explaining, which made me feel intensely stupid to the point that I just gave in and lied, saying I understood and thank you so much for the wonderful gift.

After the party was over, the N600 sat on my table for the longest time. I opened the box and took it out in a failed attempt to figure it out, but still, nothing. Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, months turned to years, years turned to decades, decades turned to centuries, centuries turned to millennia...and still, I couldn't figure it out. It just sat on the table, dormant.

One night, I heard a crash coming from downstairs. Panicked, I shot out of bed and hurried to the first floor. With my eyes well adjusted to the dark, I could see a burglar clearly. I placed my hands on the N600 firmly, making only the slightest of noises.

“What's that?” I heard him say. With that, I made one quick, forceful move towards him.

“It's the Netgear N600 Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router, jerk!” I yelled, smacking with it on the back of the head.

When I looked down, he wasn't moving aside from his foot, which kind of just shook. Oops.

No need for one, or else would at this price. This used to be the best router just a few months ago!

so what is the new best router you are speaking of?

Had this router for over a years.

During the first few months, the router needed a power cycle because it would lockup internet access. Never root caused it. May not have been the router, but power cycling the router fixed it. No problem was visible with the Cable Modem. This included wire access. Problem seemed to go away slowly. I need to power cycle every 3 months now.

Otherwise it works really well.

A note about the USB port. I tried to hook up an external drive to the USB port (stock firmware). The use was for myself and for my brother to backup some of his data to my place. It worked but I could only password it with the router password. I couldn't assign a new password for different users. I didn't like the idea of my brother pinging my router with the router password frequently. Paranoid, but I'm near a spot where people would love to rape my ISP service with their mobile devices.

It's their way of simplifying the idea of simultaneous dual band so regular people can understand it. It just means 300 (mbps) x 2 (simultaneous bands) x (802.11)N = N600

The N600 comes from the fact this is simultaneous dual band.

This means you have one router, but you have two hardware access points built in. So you have two separate access points that can do 300 Mbps theoretically.

One Wi-Fi access point runs at 2.4 GHz in n or g.
A second Wi-Fi access point runs at 5 GHz in n.

So if you have Wi-Fi sharing issues, you can do something like have all the household mobile devices and people who don't know any better on 2.4 GHz and you can put yourself on 5 GHz.

For internet access, the modem may be the bottleneck, but if someone is streaming a movie from a local computer or drive over Wi-Fi, you can dedicate a one band for them.

I don't think that's right. I believe simultaneous dual band refers to the routers capability of doing 2.4ghz and 5ghz at the same time. Most wifi routers are only capable of doing one at a time. So in the past, if you had a bunch of devices that can do 5.0ghz and a bunch of devices that could do 2.4ghz, you had to run your router at 2.4ghz to allow all the 2.4ghz devices to still work. But with simultaneous, you can have both working at the same time.

I don't think that's right. I believe simultaneous dual band refers to the routers capability of doing 2.4ghz and 5ghz at the same time.

Yes, that's right. Two simultaneous bands N bands at 300mbps, that's why they refer to it as N600... just like I said.

I already have one WNDR3700 in action. But my huge mansion (not really..lol) sees some dead spots, weak coverage on some corners. Wireless repeating with a 2nd unit for this price would be nice and easy, but I understand WEP is maximum security available and "Wired Ethernet Bridging" won't work either to stay with the one network.

Is it possible to run both bands at 2.4 GHz using a 3rd party firmware on this router? I don't have any devices that are 5 GHz capable, but I want to be able to run my video streaming devices on a separate band from the other wireless users.

5 ghz is less crowded but it doesnt go far as 2.4 ghz ... physic here.

5 ghz is only good for streaming video bc you want your stream to be constant. Otherwise it might need to have packet resent n you see freeze frame which you may not like.

Other than that, stick with 2.4 ghz.

I will only use router that can run on Tomato.

I wouldn't even load DD-WRT on this unless you're sure you need it. Just remember to update to the latest firmware for the IPv6 support.

I use one of these in conjunction with a Windows 7 Media Center setup to stream the video files to my 360s and PCs.

I would second this. The stock firmware is really quite good.

I've got 3 PCs and a 360 hardwired, and at any given time 6-10 other wireless devices attached and have had zero issues with the router. The network hasn't gone down once in months.

Can the stock Netgear firmware make this router a print server? I want to plug my printer in and use it over WiFi.

Nevermind..I just found the answer : "The Netgear N600 includes one USB port, but it is not designed for sharing the printer. The port with its ReadySHARE technology is used to share the USB storage access which supports FAT16/32, NTFS Read/Write. If you require sharing the printer within the network, you need to add a print-server. So if the printer is very important in your network, you better choose the Belkin N600 routers."

If you are concerned about only a 30 day warranty then just buy an extended one from Squaretrade. I have their warranty on a few items at home and had to use it on one and it was quick and easy. I've tried DD-WRT on a Netgear router a few years ago and it's too bloated. I don't need or want all the extra features and don't want to take the risk of killing the router in the process of flashing the firmware. Netgear's stock firmware is usually very good and simplified already. Hmmm...

Still thinking if I should upgrade my trusted WNR3500 to this N600. Has anyone done this and if so, what was you experience?

Portable hardrive with no external power works. just a note, when you install any external hardrive you must turn off all power savings settings on the drive. basically set it to never sleep. seagate drive come with the option for sure. if you leave it on a power saving mode where the hardrive spins down affter a set amount of minutes without activity then the router will be unable to wake up to drive. you will have to disconnect and reconnect the drive to the router to wake it up again if power saving is not disabled on the harddrive

I recently purchased the V2 and have just started to run into this also. My wired connections are fine but my wireless can't find DNS, for about 5 minutes or so. I'm going to try what you suggest and see if that stops this madness. Thanks! And, never thought I would have found a tech tip in here. :D

gosh...I've only had my RT-N16 for about a year now...still relatively new. What excuse can I come up with to splurge on this :lmao: The 5Ghz is very tempting, but I don't care much about simultaneous dual band cuz if I were to transition to 5Ghz, everything will go to it and nothing will be left in the 2.4ghz spectrum...

I'm not so sure 5ghz will replace 2.4. In my experience (I have had this router since it was $150) 5ghz sucks. Possibly it's just the router, but from what I understand, it doesn't have the range that 2.4 has. On the 2.4, I can go anywhere around the house, out on the deck and have 4 of 5 bars at worst. With the 5ghz, I can't get around the corner from my office w/o dropping off to seriously weak levels. I only used the 5ghz when in my office since the router is in the closet there. Even then, I typically get better throughput on 2.4ghz.

Just be sure you know what you will get on 5ghz before you plan to abandon 2.4ghz.

The router has a guest option for both 2.4 and 5ghz. End result your PC will see 4 wireless routers.

The better soluton for you maybe to use the stock firmware and implement the QOS option. This will allow you to prioritize traffic/usage.

I have 3 of these routers spread throughout my home and love them; however, I did not love them at first.

I found the stock firmware to be very basic (not any more basic than an average router) and was used to running DD-WRT. I DO NOT recommend DD-WRT for this router. It was horribly unstable and performed poorly. Tomato is not supported. (Or wasn't when I last checked) OpenWRT worked much better, but was more confusing to use and didn't support Client Bridge setups like DD-WRT did. Then I found the holy grail of firmwares for this router. Gargoyle!

http://www.gargoyle-router.com/index.php

Very simplistic, solid performance, client bridge support with WPA2 encryption. The developer releases steady updates and things have run great ever since. It's based on OpenWRT but has been customized.

For this price I highly recommend it. I paid about $120 each for my 3 routers.

This is a great router to "crowd out your neighbors' wifi" with. Excellent beacon power and distance. Anyone know if this 3700 is v1 or v2?

the distance on the 3700 is actually really bad (or my house's insulation are really good) compared to my old Trendnet 633GR. my room 2 walls away (~20ft) gets only 2 bars (Trendnet gets 5 bars), turning it on would take awhile (about 1-2 min) for it to be fully ready according to the LED lights it displays. but it's a good router overall. i did bought it knowing the wireless distances issue from reviews. had to take mine apart to see that it's a v1. about to lay down some cat6 so low bar will be a non-issue :woot:

I can attest to the 5ghz not having issue with residential grade microwaves.

I truthfully couldn't tell you. I switched between firmware pretty quickly when I bought these due to getting a client bridge running. With 3 of these throughout my house using the same SSID it's hard to tell which one I'm connected to as well. I have pretty solid WiFi now without any problems.

Any router that can blast wideband N over 2.4ghz can effectively serve as a jammer to your neighbors :lmao: potentially wrecking havoc with their networks

Great router. Normally I put DD-WRT on any router I get, but the stock firmware on this router works pretty well. Apparently it's based off OpenWRT. I've had to reboot the router maybe 4 or 5 times since I got it almost 2 years ago. It also handles Bittorrent very well, which can bring many lesser routers to it's knees.

In my experience 5Ghz isn't that great for range. But I use it for my bluray player and even though range isn't great, it streams files really well.

What I have found helpful is to turn the position of the router around until I get a better signal. Can make quite a bit of difference.

I think I did this on accident a little while ago  My speeds were detrimental but then I also realized when scanning for wireless networks that all my neighbors suddenly no longer showed up. Changed some channels and settings and my speeds returned and so did my neighbors; networks

Not sure if it was powerful enough to take them down, but maybe just to block them out of my household

So a question for the networking gurus. My current setup includes 3 routers:

Connected to modem, broadcasting 802.11g on 2.4GHz
Wireless bridge, hardwire connected to my desktop
Wireless bridge, hardwire connected to my 360 & PS3

Currently the only way I can get wireless (G, since some of my devices aren't N) is to have #1 broadcast 802.11G. I was thinking of switching this router in for #2 and having it receive as a wireless bridge on the 2.4GHz G signal and broadcast 802.11N at 5GHz. Is this workable?

+1 on Gargoyle. I was looking for something that included tools to manage bandwidth utilization and force users to use OpenDNS servers. I use OpenDNS to block them from watching movies and TV online.

This is all in a multi-user situation (Campground) and Gargoyle fit the ticket. I had been using it for several months running on a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH and it works flawlessly with QOS (including Network Congestion control) on and I also use the 'Force Users to Use Custom DNS servers' function.

I used DDWRT for years and actually bought the special version. I have migrated to Gargoyle and have not looked back.

I've been looking for a WNDR3700 because it is supported by Gargoyle.

PCTools

I disagree.

The Asus will outperform the Netgear as the antennas are inside the enclosure, thus reducing the deep fringe reception and penetration.

Also, if this is the second generation version of the Netgear, the reviews were poor.

I have been using an Android app called WiFi Analyzer on my phone. With it I can identify which of my router channels is strongest and identify possible conflicts with routers on other nearby networks.

It only identifies signals the phone's WiFi can pick up so it won't identify 5GHz signals and will not identify Wireless-N if the phone won't. Wireless-N identification works on one of my phones that supports it.

Bah:

Sorry, this coupon is only available to selected SquareTrade buyers.

Please try again

No 30% off for me. How rude!

I purchased the router. Thought I'd get the Squaretrade warranty to go with it. Doesn't appear as though it's going to allow me to use the coupon you listed. I take it's only offered to people who already have existing warranties with them?

Um... I don't know why you're getting this error. I've never used Squaretrade before and the coupon worked for me. 13.49 before, 9.44 after. THIRTY30.

Maybe try all caps? That wouldn't explain the error you received, but maybe they're system is just weird like that? Good luck!

EDIT: WOW. They let me apply the coupon to see the discounted price. Then after I pressed "Buy" they tell me I can't use it. That is probably the worst way to do it imaginable. Disappointed.

Sorry, everyone. I am looking for a router for a while. Can someone explain to me why this router is more expensive than the common ones at $30-50 price range? I notice that this one has an orig price of 130 on newegg.

My current router is provided by my ISP and does not support loopback routing. I need this feature to host my flex web application in my own machine. If I purchase this one, can I throw my current router away and directly use this one instead?

Thanks you in advance for any insights!

Probably not. Most Netgear residential routers do not support that feature. Perhaps one of their business models do but I'm not sure which ones.

does this router support loopback routing?

Most Netgear residential routers that I've ever known or used in the past 13+ years do not support loopback routing. However that is with the default firmware. If there is a Tomato or DD-WRT firmware out there that supports this router, then perhaps it is possible.

I've been looking at the -latest- reviews from Newegg and other places. Pretty scathing about Netgear, mostly on lack of good technical support and the intermittent connection, the second most concerning.

Have to say I'm on the fence. I've been wanting to get a 5GHz access point for upstairs as my XPS 15 with the Intel 6320 gets crappy 802.11g performance.

I just want to chime in and also recommend this router. I picked it up March of last year to replace my aging WRT54GL (running tomato). I threw a svn build of OpenWRT on this bad boy and it runs great. I have roughly a dozen or so wireless clients (split evenly between both radios) and this thing handles them without a problem. Between local gigabit clients, I get roughly 30+MB/s and I can get up to 15+MB/s on 5GHz N (these are real world speeds measured over SCP/NFS). If it matters, I'm on version 1 of the hardware.

I caved in and took it. This makes router #13 (my wife is going to kill me) lol
I have two WNR3500v2 routers with dd-wrt set up in a wireless bridge and to me the DD-WRT mini version isn't at all bloated. I could probably see the Big or Mega versions in that category but not the mini. Flashing was a painless easy as pie process on those units. Ive come close to bricking my WNDR3300 once but recovery was simple. I like tinkering. But as you mentioned you dont need or want the extra features but I do. I love using my router as a vpn endpoint, wireless bridging, vlans, I use many of the features. DD-WRT Vlan option saved me on an old WRT54G-TM router were the wan port was defective. I bought it as is off ebay (was a little disappointed) but was able to make use of it after flashing it and swapping the assignments of the wan port using the vlan tab. So yeah, I like dd-wrt and its been great for me.

I cant say for sure but this should be possible since the router has two radios. As long as the stock firmware is flexible in doing this, but again I dont know. I know that you can do things like this with DD-WRT as Ive successfully configured a wireless reapeater bridge setup for a little while. Then the high gain antennas came in and that was the end of that setup.

KingViper:worship: Thanks for the options dude. Now I dont feel so bad picking this router up. (though my wife will probably kick my ass anyway lol) Cool to test new stuff. Thanks man. Repped!!!

I have been using the buffalo wzr-hp-g300nh. I bought this because of sd a while back. It was suppose to be a great router. The only problem is they have been having problems with there firmware. They went with a dd-wrt firmware back in September. The firmware is rock solid but the speed is no where near 300. They came out with a factory firmware after that, but that one sucks! A month ago I contacted the company and ask if there was anything being done about the speed problem and she said it is a known problem and the company is working on it. The bad thing she said that there was no time frame on when a fix was coming out. I have waited long enough. I jumped on this bandwagon and got one. Let's hope this one will work better.

Well, by the read of it, the PCs running a static IP through the gigabit switch on the Netgear will transfer at gigabit speeds IF all the NICs on the PCs support gigabit speeds. The FIOS router will connect to the WAN/Internet port of the Netgear and that is a separate port from the 4 gigabit ports. You would need either need to bridge the FIOS router or turn the Netgear into the wireless access point and bridge and let the FIOS router do the authentication...one or the other.

I do not believe that any Netgear router supports Jumbo frame support. Only Netgear switches and NAS support Jumbo frame support. However, the chipset used by the router does support Jumbo framing and it would probably take an modded firmware like DD-WRT or Tomato in order to take advantage of it where the default Netgear firmware does not.

Man this is tempting. I need to pick up another wireless router within the next 2 weeks and the E2000 I got from Digitaletc last week was a lemon (since it was via Amazon they were cool and issued full refund).

Couldn't care less about simultaneous 2.4/5Ghz, but if a really good deal came around I wouldn't mind a little futureproofing. I would only be using this as a 2.4Ghz access point for the time being. I would like to pay ~$30, but I might be able to splurge a little.

What do you guys think? Should I buy one of these? Should I wait for another Linksys E-series price drop (most likely from Digitaletc)? Or should I buy another E2000 direct from Digitaletc for $32?

I wondered after this WNDR3700 was first introduced, how long it would be before we started seeing the refurbed "-100NAR" units come out. Netgear has always had a ton of refurbs with their products, simply because so darned many are sold in the first place. With many of their routers a few years ago, they shipped a LOT of defective/unstable 12V power bricks. The common fix was to toss the power brick they supplied, and use an older 12V supply with similar or higher amperage. I clued the Netgear folks and the DD-WRT users (http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=222339&highlight=netgear+power+bricks#222339) into this, at the time. They were surprised to find out using a different/older power brick solved so many problems.

Why would Lanbaba need to setup a wireless bridge/Access Point ?
He said that he plans on doing hardwire among all of the PCs and the FIOS modem/router.

Lanbaba:
I would connect an internal port on the FIOS to the WAN port of the WNDR and allow the WNDR to create a new IP subnet. This will insulate your internal network by implementing NAT. You can still use static IPs on the PCs (versus allowing the WNDR to handle DHCP), but they would have to be within the new subnet & also statically assign the DNS number on each PC to match your FIOS' entries for DNS.

Is this better than a dir-655? I've actually been having troubles with my router the last month and confirmed yesterday that it was not on my ISP's end or my modem and in fact was my router. It's probably just a easy fix or my server or something on my network is messing something up. Would usually fix it but may just buy this instead. The dual band is nice but in terms of ethernet speeds and security which one is better? Also fyi don't expect to receive this within the two weeks, daily steals takes forever. Bought a phone from them once after mine had died, knew it was a bad idea to begin with but didn't think it would take 3 weeks to receive it.

How do you actually check if your network is connecting at a certain speed, such as yours with 270 Mbps?

I had a 655 last year. It had intermittent disconnects. I'm now using two WNDR 3700s

JEL7: For your LAN connection, It's specific to the client app for your NIC or USB wireless dongle. Netgear's client app shows the true connection speed to the router. On the other hand I have a Linksys USB dongle that always says 300mbps. Most routers will show the speed as well. You just have to be able to identify which connection belongs to which network appliance, within your LAN.

Unless you are sitting within spitting distance of the router, that 300mbps is probably not true.

In my example of my Linksys that always says 300mbps, it only represented the full potential of the connection; not the actual connection speed.

In4one. REPPEd. I can finally upgrade the G-router and provide a gigabit network to my home. Seems like most SD'ers are in agreement that you can't go wrong with this router, so I look forward to having (and probably not noticing any) speed improvements, but knowing that the hardware can back it up. Thx!

Most likely not... unless your internet was super fast (above Wireless G and 100Mbps speeds)... and assuming you don't currently have a Wireless N / Gig Ethernet router.

That's only partially correct. A proper switch (as opposed to a hub... and I
would not hesitate to guess that this high-end wireless router would be switched)
will allow for a mix of both 10/100/1000 Mbps speeds. Traffic going between
devices which support 1000 Mbps port will be remain 1000 Mbps. Simultaneously,
traffic going to devices with only 10/100 support will get downgraded to those
speeds without impact to the speed of 1000 Mpbs ports. Also, this is regardless
of whether the devices are using static or dynamic IP addresses.

Thank you, but still a little confused. If I let the FISO router do the authentication, does that mean the speed will be limited at megabit?
Can I accomplish the following without bridging the FIOS router? Internal file transfer at gigabit speed; FIOS router NOT bridged.

This does not have a print server, it's for USB storage. Unless you're talking about a 3rd party firmware that implements it.
Oh didn't know that there is no print server function; maybe ddwrt can implement it
....don't care since I'm going with the Asus
Ditched my problematic Asus N16 for this and I love it. Not sure about the refurb deal, but I really like this router. I've had it running for months and never had to do any resets.
that's too bad...were you using the stock Asus firmware instead of Tomato or ddwrt?
I've heard nothing but praise for the Asus when using Tomato.
I disagree.

The Asus will outperform the Netgear as the antennas are inside the enclosure, thus reducing the deep fringe reception and penetration.

Also, if this is the second generation version of the Netgear, the reviews were poor.
That's good to know! Now I can expect a very satisfactory product when it arrives tomorrow from newegg.

That Buffalo router of yours is a piece of rubbish. I bought two of those things and they should have there ass kicked for marketing that piece of shit.

Firmware is rubbish, even with DD-WRT. It took my 50Meg service in the low 10's.

Went with the Asus and feel it is the best router available.
I seem to agree with you. I am sure if they got their heads out of there a** it could be a good one, but it has been way to long. It was time to move on.

Not true. This WNDR3700 will most likely have more RAM and a faster CPU and will therefore be able to process wired and wireless packets much faster than your old router - even if you are just using 802.11g. The key is performance, not necessarily the specs or the standard... So if you are subscribing to anything more than 12Mb service from your ISP, I'll bet the WNDR3700 will significantly outperform a 3-4 year old wireless access point.

I was not going into that kind of depth. My response was to the statement of being able to connect all of the user's PCs up to the gigabit switch for gigabit speeds. Auto-negotiations was not my intent in explanations though you are accurate. However if any of the NICs on those PCs in questions are rated at 10/100 support then 1000 Mbps will never occur with those PCs. That was my only point in my response.

Agree... that's why I said "most likely not". Unfortunately, most
people do not have Internet speeds that fast. The average
American speed is about 4 MBps. And even with a faster
CPU, the difference would generally be negligable in most
cases... you'd be better off trying to optimize your OS for
Internet traffic. The fact is there is not enough info to
go by, and for most people, regardless of how old the
current router is, the speed improvements would be so
minor you would not notice much improvement on everyday
usage.

Can I accomplish the following without bridging the FIOS router? Internal file transfer at gigabit speed; FIOS router NOT bridged.

No, the gigabit switch will still perform gigabit transfers internally between each PC.

I'm from the south so I don't have Verizon FIOS to know if it connects to their network via an always on connection or one that requires PPPoE authentication.
If it is always on, then it is already an ethernet bridge on the WAN/internet side and a router on the LAN side. If it is a PPPoE connection, then you can leave it to do the authentication and let the Netgear be your internal LAN bridge but you'd need to set it up that way through the web interface of the Netgear. It's easy to do and a simple setting. The documentation should be able to detail how to do that.

It's been stated previously but run a network cable from one of the ports on the FIOS router to the WAN/Internet port on the Netgear. Set up the Netgear as a bridge, and now you have gigabit ethernet for all gigabit compatible devices plugging into that Netgear.

Bear in mind, sometimes Refurbished = Someone else's headache.

until it becomes YOUR headache? ;)

I buy refurb all the time...but the only thing I've really had randomly break was my last Netgear router. I'm pretty sure it was refurb, but of course I have no clue if that is related to it ultimately failing.

But the fact that it DID fail...and the fact that Netgear seems to have so many refurbs, makes me want to stick with the Trendnet router that I painstakingly finally got configured to my liking. I mean, I wonder for each router that breaks and gets refurbed, how many just broke and got thrown away.

As much as I'd like to upgrade to this one, I don't want to risk another Netgear. I know...sample of one...but still...

So the Netgear will be in a different subnet?

FIOS Modem/Router LAN port ---> WAN 3700 LAN ---> PCs.
and let's say FIOS' DNS is 4.4.2.2, subnet 192.168.1.x, then 3700 will also have 4.4.2.2, and subnet 192.168.0.X ? And no need to set up static IP for the PCs?

No, you don't need to set up another subnet. Just turn off DHCP on the 3700 to turn it into a switch and let the router do the routing.

Yes you can and its pretty easy. You use the MAC address from each router to set it up. I have 2 of these doing a wireless bridge on the 5.0 band and then spreading 2.4 on each(plus stuff wired into each one as well).

You must remember to make one your base router with DHCP on, and the other with DHCP OFF!! The SSID must be the same for the bridge to work properly, and i use different names for each of the routers for 2.4 band. It seems complicated, but it really isn't.

I just had both of them go down on me (2.4 radio problems) and had to send them back in to Netgear for replacement. The 2 new ones are up and running, but I haven't tested them really yet.

Thank you so much! This has been driving me nuts and I had just downgraded to an old g router because of the issue.

I copied your post into the netgear forums because I couldn't find your solution there and it was better than the other workarounds.

Any thoughts on the best firmware for these?

Personally I don't care much for OpenWRT, and I'm kinda partial to DD-WRT. However, it appears that flashing DD-WRT onto these isn't quite as smooth as other routers. The stock firmware seems to get a lot of praise, but it looks like 1 or 2 of the versions were crap.

Stock firmware was updated to 1.0.14.98 about a week ago. Is anyone currently running this? Atm I'm thinking of starting with that and then switching to DD-WRT if things don't work out.

So I'm new to home networking. What is DD-WRT or whatever and what is tomato? can someone explain these terms haha? I'm in for one and probably won't use half the features.

DD-WRT (http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/index) and TomatoUSB (http://tomatousb.org/) (a variation of the original Tomato (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato)) are open source Linux based firmwares (basically your router's operating system) you can use instead of the stock (factory installed) firmware.

Stock firmware (in general) is known for being buggy, poorly designed, and/or light on features. People often turn to alternative firmwares like DD-WRT and Tomato to add new features (QoS, VLAN, guest network, etc), make their router more stable, extend their WLAN's range (stock firmware might not use the router's hardware to its full potential), etc.

People seem to think highly of the WNDR3700's stock firmware. Supposedly it's just as stable and feature packed as a lot of DD-WRT builds. I for one am a little biased towards DD-WRT, but with all the positive reviews I think I'll give the stock firmware a go and see how well it holds up.

Appreciate the input, i'll stick with stock as well. Thanks!

Higher overall throughput.

What does this mean? I have the E2000 clocked at 400Mhz. How fast does this run? native and overclocked?

Found an antenna mod. Who wants to take a crack at it?

The stock rom is based off of OpenWRT. An older build, but OpenWRT nonetheless. I recommend Gargoyle, and have posted information in the wiki.

Can you use Tomato on it? :omg:

Unfortunately no. Probably shouldn't have mentioned Tomato in my other post, but I wanted to answer the other guy's question about alternatives to stock firmware.

AFAIK there is no official (stable) Tomato build that will run on the WNDR3700. :(

What the heck...so this thing has no antennas whatsoever?
The specs/video of this from Netgear was proudly boasting about hidden antennas inside for optimum performance ___

A key measurable in routers is overall throughput from the LAN side to the WAN side. If you're using a lower speed internet connection and not doing much on the LAN side, that wont matter as much until you upgrade to a higher internet connection speed, or until you're doing a lot, or interconnecting routers.

The site 'smallnetbuilder' keeps charts of most routers and measures performance and throughput on them.

For example, the E2000 (aka the wrt 320n) has a total simultaneous throughput of 159Mb/s while the WNDR3700 has a total simultaneous throughput of 478Mb/s.

This is under conditions where the router is pretty much flat out passing data. Most home routers do a lot of other stuff concurrently with that, so bear in mind that those throughputs will drop as the router has to handle DHCP, DNS, uPNP and other service requests.

Type and speed of the cpu, amount and speed of memory, brand of network chip, speed of any internal 'bus' connections and the quality of the firmware are factors that will affect throughput.

The antennas are internal. The mod attempts to increase range by adding external antennas. I'd love to attempt this mod for extra performance (plus I think external antennas look cool) though there aren't any step-by-step guides.

I'd rather see someone take a crack at the RAM mod. That's surface mount soldering you have to do. Crazy! :omg:

Yeah I was thinking of doing some serious mods to my WRT350. Adding dual usb ports; easy peasy, High Gain Antennas: easy, SD Card add on: easy, RAM: gtfo lol

I have some spare memory sticks that I could use but I would need some additional tools and lots of practice to tackle such a mod.

Random question:
I think I already know the answer but just thought I ask you since your using the firmware already. Do you know if PPTP-VPN can be installed or added as a package?

Haha you might be waiting a while. I've ordered twice from Dailysteals in the past and each time they took 5+ days to ship my item. It'll show up, but they are slow. heh.

Nothing so far. As long as it comes within the next two weeks and works I'll be happy.

The E2000 I ordered from Digitaletc (via Amazon) materialized out of thin air the moment I paid (yes prime is that fast), but it turned out to be a lemon...
