I've been looking for a card for my new 60D. Seems like a good deal...but the reviews are crappy.
There was a previous post here that mentioned possibly counterfeit cards accounting for bad reviews: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2934909

I just saw this deal too, and the main page of the card there is a promotion to add a Kingston jump drive for $7.99 and get free super saver shipping.
I was bummed when I missed out on last week's slick deal post for this drive and I was happy to buy today. I needed this drive to help my Godson with his school supplies!

Poor reviews for Kingston 16gb SDHC card
The guy who did his own testing and gave a one star review most likely had a poor SD card reader, or some other exogenous factor. He claimed variable write speeds for different files sizes, which sounds like a controller issue on the SD card reader.
SDA cleared this product as meeting the class-10 requirements.

Poor reviews for Kingston 16gb SDHC cardYikes! Agreed, not a lot of ratings and they're already quite mixed. I'll stick with my PQI 150x cards which cost about the same and have so far been good to me.

I personally did not have the best of luck when using Kingston products. I bought one MicroSD when the gold standard was still 1gb about 6 years ago for my blackberry. One day it just flopped and erased all my pictures.
Then I bought a 16gb Kingston data traveler USB stick for my husband. It failed after less than 2 years. I just called their warranty department and they will replace for free. The replacement process is very easy but just knowing that 2 of their products failed on me make me kinda nervous buying another Kingston.

The only credence I would give to a review would be failure or corrupt rates. However, with removable media like SD cards user care is always a concern and something to keep in mind when reading poor reviews.

Poor reviews for Kingston 16gb SDHC card
I have one of these and it performs as expected. It is well above the minimum 10MB/s for its class rating. I'm getting 15-17MB/s, although I do have a pretty poor quality card reader, so it may be possible that it will do better.
In any case,it is definitely a class 10 card (minimum 10MB/s both ways) and I've had no issues with mine.

There are reports of poor performance from several reviewers (presumably using different card readers and computers) who got much better write speeds with other brands. The evidence points to the Kingston cards.
https://www.sdcard.org/developers/faq/#certification:
Q: Does SD Association have a product certification program? How do you get certified?
A: The SD Association offers a self-certification program to its members. The compliance committee recommends using the approved Test Specification which is made available to members on the members site.
SDA does not cerify SD products. Kingston knowingly (fraud) or unknowingly (supplier problem) put class 10 stickers on sub-class-4 cards, and got caught. Deja vu (http://www.bunniestudios.com/blog/?page_id=1022)?
Kingston has major QC problem with this batch of so-called Class 10 SDHC cards that are slower than common Class 4~6 cards. Most consumer level cameras and HD camcorders do not require more than Class 4 speed for 1080/60p 28Mbps or 720/30p (M-JPEG or H.264) recording, which explains the positive reviews ("it works in my camera"). For a few bucks more, one can get real Class 10 cards with (mostly) positive reviews and much faster photo/file writing.

Remember Class rating only rates the sustained WRITE speed of single large files written sequentially. Typically read speeds should be larger. This is a meaningful number only in relation to how long it takes to write large sequential blocks of data--like a 10 megapixel image on a camera, or a video from a MPEG4 device, or of course filing the drive on your card reader on your computer.
However, if the card is going to be used for different purposes -- such as the main system card in a device like a tablet, class rating is nearly useless, and in fact, you may typically want a smaller rating than a larger one.
The reason being is that it's all about RANDOM (small block) WRITE, not SEQUENTIAL WRITE. Some class 4, 6, 10 cards that have 6-18 MB/s sequential write speeds actually have horrendous random write... down as horrible as 0.005 MB/second. The absolute best ones top out around 2 MB/second.
Read the threads about the B&N Nook Color and see why some people have horrible experiences running alternate firmware from a microSD card and others have excellent or its faster to flash it into the internal memory. This is because the way Android works there are constant writes to databases involving tiny bits of data. This includes downloads.
I know first hand by running into this issue on another Android tablet over the weekend. A 20MB/s (sequential) card took 10+ times as long to download new apps from both Google and Amazon market than a 8 MB/s (sequential) card that had a much higher random write speed. The slower (random write) one also experienced numerous system freezes, app wait/stop/crashes. All went away by actually swapping for a older/'slower' (sequential write) card. A-DATA, SanDisk class 2 was a good card, Kingston and Dane-Elec class 4 were bad cards.
They really need to post both ratings as the way you use the card will affect what you want to get. But until then, use CrystalDiskMark in windows to get a 4K Random QD1/QD32 rating as well as a large file sequential rating and see which cards actually perform better overall in either (or hopefull both) ends of the scenario spectrum/for the uses YOU intend to use it for.

I would give credence to N Lee's reviews.
He's currently the number 8 (of like a billion) reviewer on amazon. His word is "gospel" when it comes to memory card and battery reviews:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/pdp/profile/AOEAD7DPLZE53/
He uses multiple card readers on different computers to take out any such variablity. However the only problem with his reviews is his sample set is one. As kingston is probably just slapping it's name on something it picked up cheap the quality could vary day to day.

Cool, so go with lower class?
I'm contemplating getting this to 'speed up' my laptop asus g60vx which maxed out at 4gb. Can anyone comment on:
1. If the "use flash drive to speed up pc" actually works?
2. and USB flash drive vs. SD/SDHC speeds for this purpose?
Thanks guys

No, it's not. It is clear you do not understand how the ratings work. To be fair 99% of people don't understand how they work.
Take a look at some of the user attached screenshots in Amazon.com. Like most other high class cards, this one has LOWER write speeds with smaller file sizes because it is optimized to hit maximum write speed only with very large files. Between the two cards, the Class 4 would be faster for most people's practical usage. This card, however, would be ideal for large file storage such as media files (like if you were storing movies for a tablet or other device).

While this card may be alright for picture taking it has trouble buffering for HD video recording. Used it on a Canon 60D and had a lot of trouble recording 720p or above so I highly recommend not buying this SD card if you want to capture HD videos. Not really a "true" class 10 SD card as it indicates and read reviews that it performed below even a class 4 sd card of another brand...

Yes, I own this and did a standard pc test and got 10mb/s no higher. but it says you can get higher speeds using camcorder video etc.
$20 seems like a fair deal, got mine for $22 on a deal. but 15 would've been a sweet deal!

I too have had some similar experiences with kingston sdhc cards. I had a class 10 card, and took some pictures with it, but the card got corrupted and I lost a few pictures. The warranty department at kingston was good, and replaced it quickly and without issue. The replacement card has been good, and so have 2 other kingston sdhc cards I bought before the initial failure. No issues, so far.
However, with all these reported defects of bad memory, I too am a little wary of buying anymore kingston flash memory.

Well you're entitled to your opinion - BUT - you don't say why you feel Kingston is better than Transcend? If you're going to say something make it constructive.
Kingston products are hard to find - that is legal ones. Too many fake Kingston drives on Amazon, FleaBay, and the rest of them. For example, Kingston USB flash drives have an engraved serial number on the head. I've seen guys on Amazon and Ebay sell a 256GB flash drive for $200 (with no engraving), which is definitely fake - real ones sell for over $700. Most of the sellers won't tell you if there is an engraving or not - because they know the rest of the story.
Now so do you.

I have the 32GB version of this SD Card. I tested the speed, and yes, this card is ridiculously slow when dealing with small files. But I didn't get it for small files, I got it for video. It does hit 10 mB/s write on large files (not much more), and 15-17 mB/s read. I've had it about a month, and I have not had a problem recording video at the highest setting on a Panasonic TM-900K--that's 1080P/60. Granted, a true Class 4 card would have worked, since the highest resolution requires 28 mb/s (which equates to approx. 3.5 mB/s), but I can say that this card worked for my intended purpose in a high-end consumer camcorder.

His excuse is that others have had issues with the product and therefore his opinion will stand. It's a tip of his hat to others but his own personal experience is basing off of others who only have 10 to 11 approvals.
As for considering him the gospel, I consider a multitude number of reviews to be much more important than any singular person.

Fair enough. I have about 8 kingston cards, all working perfectly for years; knock on wood, I have yet to see see missing files as some people claims. I HAD a transcend which only lasted about 6 months before it failed. And we are on a post regarding SD cards, not flash drives. So constructive, but off to a tangent? Cheers.

I have this exact card. Used it last week with my T1i, was able to record at 720p@30fps until the camera overheated, no problems shooting video. Shooting 15MP RAW images I can keep shooting until I fill the buffer, and can continue to shoot at ~1fps as the camera writes to the card.

720P video is not exactly a stress test and a fast card does not increase RAW speed on the T2i/T1i (it fills the buffer then the card).

how is that lazy? He did not waste time on returning and testing other cards because other reviewers verified his results.
