Please stop obsessing over this adapter. Far better deals get (http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=3173053) ignored while this one gets thumbed to high heaven no matter what price Meritline decides to put it on sale for each week. A large number of slickdeals users have posted about this adapter overheating and dying. Yes, it works fine for countless more I'm just trying to illustrate that this one is not without its problems.
I bought this adapter when it reached its low price point of $8.95 on 11/29/2010 and in my opinion it should have kept going down. There are newer, better adapters now for competitive prices.
Heck, you can get a dual-band 300Mbps adapter (recertified Linksys AE1000) for $3.50 extra.

the thing about 300Mbps adapters is that you will never reach the full 300Mbps.
while it is true that these adapters do get hot, the way to avoid transferring that heat to the MB is to use a usb extension cable.
just like any electronics, some do die from the heat. just order a new one and return the defective one in its place. it not like ml puts a SN on everything like NE does.

Got one last time - you get what you pay for. The maximum connection speed is 72 mbps, about half of the claimed connection speed. And looks like this is particular model AWLL6075 DOES NOT WORK WITH WD TV LIVE. If someone can get this particular model to work with WD TV Live, please shred some lights.

Works perfect with the WD TV Live Plus i bought for my dad last week. I got the product from Amazon (I bought 3 of them) and agree 2 day free shipping and Amazon name made me get it from Amazon. Everything I have bought from Meritline does not work or quits working soon after i get it.

Connect your WD TV Live Plus to a wired connection and do firmware updates. (I got my dads last week and had to do 2 firmware updates) then the Airlink wireless in this thread worked perfectly.

I got one last time at the same price. It works fine on my Patriot Box Office networked media player. It streams HD video from my NAS to the player without any problem. This adapter is also compatible to most networked media player and BluRay players. Nevertheless, a better way to connect media player to wireless network is by wiring it a router in wireless bridge mode.

Yes, I post wireless adapter deals fairly often unless someone beats me. I found that deal while looking at what else was on sale today to make sure I couldn't find a better alternative to this. As I said in my post, this is the cheapest Realtek-based adapter today, but that doesn't mean it's the best choice for everyon. I avoided hyperlinking my post so that I wouldn't be self-promoting.

Agrees to disagree because I bought two of these and they worked like a charm. Yes it does get very hot but I'm not touching it nor handle it after plugging it up. It has excellent range and I did not even have to install a driver for Windows 7. I did for Windows XP and it installed without an issue.

I'm not sure about your house to be able to answer that. If the router is directly below the router then you should have no problems with signal and range. If you have a 5000 sq ft house and the router is on one end and the adapter is on another, then the signal and range will be drastically less. I still get 5 bars at 50 ft with this adapter but the signal also depends on the transmitter from the router so I can't say you'll have the same results as I did at 50 ft with a Linksys e2000.

This little sucker has been working great for me on my WD Live Plus. I configured it and started streaming movies from my NAS in a matter of minutes.
I'm not sure about the N capabilities of this adapter, but it's allowed me to stream DVDs over my G network without any problems so far.
The only downside of this thing is that it only operates at 2.4 GHz. I wish it was on 5 GHz for N.

I got one from last deal. When I plug it in my Dell mini netbook running win 7, it would not get detected at all so I can't even load the driver. When I plug it in my Dell desktop running win 7, it has no problem. But I am also having problem with it on a DEll XP desktop machine, it cannot be detected. Not sure what causes all this.

couldn't agree more.... I'm sharing a house with several people and I'm on a desktop. The router is in the living room and my desktop is in my room. I get constant disconnections with this adaptor, it runs very hot, and if it does work... my ping to vent reads up to 20,000 which I have never seen it do before (also my average ping here is ~60).

SoggyLobster, I think that derp99 was saying that he thinks the Linksys AE1000 is trash. I assume that you are talking about this Airlink adapter though.
Disconnects can be caused by many different things. With a 2.4GHz network, you might get disconnected whenever someone uses a 2.4GHz cordless phone, a cordless mouse, or even when a nearby microwave is used. Neighboring networks can also cause enough interference to cause disconnects. If interference really is the problem for you then most adapters will also struggle. A high powered adapter with a big antenna might have better luck or you could use a router as a client bridge like this ENHWI-2AN3 (http://www.chiefvalue.com/product-_-productdetails.cv_-_item--CE00158306010060) for $27.

The disconnects might be caused by the service provider currently att. It is known to disconnect occasionally, however, with the adaptor attached (yes the airlink one), I get disconnected very often. Know house phones in the house, so i doubt its caused by a cordless phone. Also know one has a cordless mouse either. The microwave is probably ~15feet away from the microwave but when its used I don't have problems with my internet connect.
I was thinking of getting a USB extension so that i could attach the adaptor to it and have the adaptor sitting on my desk instead of attached to my computer. It seems to do slightly better when i move my desktop with the adpator away from the desk.
mind telling me more about using a router as an adaptor bridge, or guiding me to the right place? thanks for the help btw. also where should I look for high powered adaptors with a big antenna?

The Linksys does come with a USB extension cable.
The Alfa brand is well known for their high powered wireless adapters. Set a deal alert, they pop up here occasionally. Premiertek makes some more budget friendly and easy to find high-powered adapters.
That ENHWI-2AN3 can be configured as a client bridge with its stock firmware. Someone posted instructions in the wiki post of this old thread (http://archive.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=2207502).

I bought 4 of them, yes, 4 of them, 1 for me, 3 for relatives, back in June 2011, when Amazon priced $79.99, Staples price matched + the famous $25 off/ $75----> $60 shipped, each.
If you know WD products well enough, update the FW is the last thing that you wanna do.

I'm not sure why you would expect this Airlink adapter to outperform the 802.11g WiFi in your laptop connecting to a G router. Your laptop has much larger antennas in it than you could squeeze in a tiny USB adapter so I would expect a better signal with the laptop's built-in WiFi. With a G router, you aren't getting any of the benefits of the 802.11n technology on the Airlink. Assuming you don't have a lot of 2.4GHz interference in your area, pairing this Airlink adapter with a good two-stream 802.11n router would outperform your laptop's built-in G.
Keep in mind that depending on how the drivers are designed, different adapters will report their signal strength and connection speed differently. You should actually transfer a file across the network to do a real test.

I just got the Cisco E2000 wireless router which is N capable. I have a 3 year old laptop with a built in G wireless card. My desktop is 6 years old and doesn't have a wireless card at all, just wired connection. Can I plug this adapter in to both computers and use N wireless speeds for both computers? Is it that simple, just plug it in and connect to the network?

This can plug into one computer at a time to give it access to a wireless network. You can have multiple wireless adapters in a computer at the same time. You may need to install the driver before your computer recognizes the adapter, but it will probably just be recognized automatically.

So if I buy two of them, plug one into the laptop one into the desktop. It will convert the laptop G card to an N wireless card? And will it provide wireless N to the desktop even though the desktop doesn't have a wireless card at all?

Yes. Technically, it's not converting G to N, you'd just have two different connections available in the laptop.

Just an update, now that I have the N router working, these little guys are much faster than the original G wireless card built in to the laptop. I would definitely recommend them. I'm ~50 away from my router and I get 80-90% signal.
Here's a stupid question, can a wireless N card outperform a wired ethernet signal? Is there a benefit to using this instead of just manually plugging in to the router for my desktop?
