you need Shimano SPD cleats NOT theSPD-SL (LOOK style). A good idea might be the PD-A530 which you can use with these shoes, or flip over and use with regular shoes.

Hello, those will work. When you buy new pedals they usually come with cleats, but since you are buying a bike (presumably used) you'll need to get a new pair. The ones you selected release both ways, the silver ones only release one way (turning your leg out). So anyway, yes those will work and they would be better for starting off than the silver kind.

EDIT: The silver and gold ones seem to be multi-release now, while the black ones seem to be single release. I would get multi release ones for starting off, this is coming from the person who tipped his bike over on the second day of using toe clips and straps.

Not an expert, but it should work, since its SPD and not SPD-SL, check the cleats page, I think it may have one exception. Also, amazon has the cleats much cheaper at about 13 dollars.

I mean, the question should really be "what kind of shoes/clip system do I need for the bike I just bought?"

I'm guessing that if you're buying a bike on CL, I'm guessing you don't want to drop $$ on new pedals ;) I may be wrong here.

Thanks for your help! For being "mountain" bike rated, they are still pretty stylish and comfy. Great price, great fit, and easy to use with the multi release cleats you suggested. I only almost spilled once but had a stop light to lean over on before totally wiping out :bounce:
