Hello SD community-- could use your help diagnosing what is wrong with my computer.
Background: Built this computer in July 06. Features:
EVGA 122-CK-NF67-A1 680I SLI 775 mobo
Q6600 2.4Ghz (B60 step), OCed to 2.6Ghz per core
500GB hdd (seagate)
2GB RAM DDR800 (OC'ed to 967Mhz)
600 Watt powersupply
8800GTS 384MB XfX video card
Sony dvdrw.
Antec 900 case.
Issue:
This issue has just recently been present. It is odd... When I turn on the computer, all the lights turn on and the cpu reader light works then stops and nothing happens. I have to wait a few minutes then hit the reset button on the computer and then it actually boots up, but all my settings on my mobo reset. So then I have to reset the computer again and all the settings then are there and then the computer starts. Computer is still fast to boot up, but still takes a few minutes to actually turn on because of the above.
I have checked all the cables are securely in, and cleaned up any dust. So what component is at fault here?

POST? There are no errors when it is up and running. Just in the beginning. Oh I also have a tuniq tower on the cpu to keep it cool since this was an early gen q6600.

it doesn't let me give you any reps cause it says i need to spread the wealth around :P Thanks for the response.

You built the computer but you don't know what POST means?

I know it is sad... I built is 4 years ago and haven't built one since :( I'll double check, but I don't think there was any issues on POST). First time the mobo resets itself, so I have to restart it again which brings back all the settings (OC multiplier settings), and then no issues.

Do you have 2x1GB memory or just a single 2GB stick?

Do you change any bios or settings after it resets? Do you over clock or adjust the memory timings? Also when it fails to boot do you hear any beeps?

2x1 GB
Try booting up with one at a time and see if you still get errors.

No beeps, and I don't need to change the bios since after the reseting it again, it brings back the settings. Never had this issue before. I'll change up the memory and see what it does.

The first step for troubleshooting for any OC'ed machine should be to reset back to stock speed settings.

There should be a fail safe settings option on your bios. Wait can you even access bios? ( i didn't read posts above sorry, in a hurry)

I can set it up to do stock read, but the RAM I got has to have a specific volt and timing, this is the RAM i purchased: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146565

totally missed you are ocing, what I bet is the settings you have are not good and the bios are rebooting in to a fail safe mode.

Haven't had a problem for almost 4 years though with the same settings. And issue is that the computer doesn't start up immediately, it turns on but nothing comes on the screen. I have to wait 3-4 min, hit restart, then bios screen comes on stating my settings need to change (goes to default settings), then I hit restart again and my old settings are back and it boots up fine.

hmmm, could still be a part failing after 4 years of ocing. I would do as someone said said and reset them to fail safe and see how it acts then. at least we would know of its an oc thing or something else.
