If you expect to be able to use this site to benefit from what it contains, you should learn how to look for stuff.... If you are not familiar with message boards you can go to wikipedia to read about how they work, and what you should do for help... yes FAQ would be a good idea, also when you are going to ask a silly question sometimes you should pm someone so they dont see how newbie you are!

This person is new...

Basically reps are a friendly way to thank people when they score you a deal. People shouldn't beg for them -- that's just embarrasing, because you can't do anything with reps. A lot of people stop showing their rep count for that reason (an option in your profile/account).

Too bad there's not a feature to take away rep points. Your account would go into a deficit for posting this in "hot deals"!!

Oh...there used to be a feature that did that...until members began abusing it. It was nicknamed "Nerping". People with a rep count of 100 or more had the ability to Nerp and remove a rep point from someone who does something stupid or offensive...it was kind of a way of getting contributing members the option of getting involved with somewhat moderation.

Once more people began to hit 100 rep points we ultimately came across a large amount of immature individuals that take advantage of any power they get and ended up with Nerp partys where a bunch of people with 100 or more rep points would target a specific person and try to take away all thier reps...three days later the Nerp priveledge was removed...

And that doesnt even account for the unbelievable amount of whinning that took place after a person had been repped. The poor moderators spent way to much of thier time responding to people who complain that they had been nerped...Ultimately slickdeals decided Nerping was causing too much chaos in the slickdeals "community" and they found that the ability to Nerp added no real benifit to the site or the community.

so when asking for this feature...remember...it was your fellow SD'ers that got it removed in the first place.

Taken from the FAQ...

What are reputation points and what are those green boxes under my username?
Every user starts with 10 reputation points. You can give other users rep points if you feel that the post has been helpful. Reputation points can only be given in the deal, freebie or help forums. The best way to accumulate rep points is by posting a good deal.

You can view the last 5 reputation points you have received in your usercp. The ones with green boxes count towards your score, while the gray ones are not. The points that count usually come from seasoned users.

Negative rep points are not allowed due to abuse but certain privileged users are able to give negative rep.

I think it should come back. Nerp wars sound pretty fun. We could turn slickdeals into a game :starwars:, it would be the greatest MMO ever! :horse: :swordfigh

They're mostly an excuse for people who don't have anything better to brag about--to brag.

And also incentive to hunt out deals. ;)

Don't feel bad. I signed up a few weeks ago and had the same problem. Was disappointed to find a post deep in a search saying it wasn't worth anything... about as much as users like HookedUpStang. ;)

edited to add:
That post mentioned people w/ more reps are more likely to get coupons and such when trading w/ others.

For real. I think most of us have gotten bitten by the "omg I just called on a PM and got 6!!" - n00b.
Posts/Jokes like that deserved to be NERP'd.

I have never been tempted to Nerp anyone.
Therefore, since I do not have a lust for power, I should be regranted the ability to nerp....just in case it's necessary.
In fact, because I have such a low desire to exercise power, I should have the ability to remove a person's ENTIRE RP total.

Reps are totalled for services rendered. When Mr Slickdeals feels a person has accumulated enough RPs, he awards that person 1 free day of slickdeals at no cost except you lose 100 rep points to pay for it.

Part of the free day is online pictures of the Carribean and Steel Drum midi downloads to celebrate the cyber vacation which is all expense paid by Mr Slickdeals. :P

I have purposely insisted peoople do NOT rep me as I have no time for a cyber vacation this year.

LOL. Anonymouse, you so craaazy.

Wanted to say thanks for the link in your signature to clean up your computer-I've always wondered and wouldn't know who to ask. So, boy scout, consider that your good deed for the day. You may go about your otherwise naughty behavior.

;)
