View Full Version : Vulcan could not have been destroyed as shown in the film

The red matter was essentially free falling into the hole the Romulan's created. Assuming Vulcan is basically Earth sized (due to similar gravity) it would take almost 30 hours for the weapon to reach the core. Yet Vucan starts imploding less than a minute later!
I highly doubt the drill could reach the core as quick either in the first place. Probably would take years.
You would think they would make this stuff more accurate.

But your overlooking the temporal mechanical fact that that particular Star Trek movie sucked and that wasn't the only inaccuracy in the movie.
Also, I'm not sure of the gravity comparison to Earth, but the atmosphere is different. Hotter temperature and thinner air.
Google -> define:fiction.
fic·tion Noun/ˈfikSHən/
1. Prose literature, esp. short stories and novels, about imaginary events and people.
2. Invention or fabrication as opposed to fact.

I thought it was a great movie. :dontknow:

Of all of the areas where you had to suspend disbelief for this film, this is the one you're questioning?

Why does the red matter have to reach the core though? It started a black hole, which consumed the planet...whether the black hole is created at the core, or near the surface, it would still consume the planet either way.

Welcome to 2009!
It took you TWO YEARS to finally formulate your theory? Do you ride the "slow bus"?
Seriously, those problems will be all fixed by the 200+ years or so it takes to get to that time period.
So, in other words:

There are several flaws in your observation.
You are assuming the gravitational force on Vulcan is the same as Earth.
You are assuming the red matter device was free falling and not propelled by some force.
You are assuming the red matter device detonated at Vulcan's core.
You are assuming a laser type drill (from the future) bores a hole as fast as auger type drill.
You are assuming people who makes movies, gives a rat's ass about accuracy.

In the movie the device was free falling, you can see it. The Romulans were specifically drilling until they "reached the core". Even a bad ass laser drill would take years (decades, eons) to drill to the core of an Earth sized planet. I care about "some" accuracy.

Free falling for miles and somehow hit a hole in the ground? There would have to be some control of the device, and if there was control, there most likely was propulsion.

Not enough propulsion to reach the core. LOL. Watch the movie it's basically falling.

It was destroyed that quickly by virtue of the immense amount of suck the film possessed.

So just how fast does a "badass laser drill" from the late 24th century drill?

Wasn't it a TNG episode that they used the ships phasers to "drill" holes into the planet to relieve stresses from tectonic pressure that was causing volcanoes to mess up the atmosphere?
As I recall those drill bores took moments to create and they were just general phasers, not a dedicated "Drill"
So I'm going to say that yeah...it would take seconds to drill the hole.

How dare you postulate on technology progression based on current (TNG) technology. You don't know! they could have another "christianity" type development that causes the entire universe to go back to the stone age and the "drill" they are using is really just a coleman grill on steroids from the antique store because that's all they could find after the new crusades. Think man! Think!

Yeah. That was the episode with that weird scientist, wasnt it? And these were phasers, not something specifically devised to be a drill. Not that there would be much difference. But it is all moot, since it is fiction.
