You should change your title to E-300.
Just to clarify, the E-300 chip is 1.3 GHz, even though HP lists it as 1.6 GHz. I think they forgot to change it when they switched over from the E-350 (which was 1.6GHz). The upgrade to the E_450 is probably worth it because it operates at 1.65 GHz and will have slightly better graphics.
I personally am struggling between this and something like the 11.6" Acer TimelineX with the last gen i5 or i7 chips. They are about $150-200 more, but have about 2+ times the CPU capability, although less graphics capability.

No, the architecture is more or less the same, but the E-300 is 1.3 GHz compared to 1.6 GHz for the E-350. The E-300 is meant to be the replacement for the single core E-240. I am not sure if benchmarks are available yet for the E-300... I haven't checked.
The E-450 is only very marginally faster than the E-350 in CPU benchmarks, but maybe 10-20% in terms of graphics performance.
I they discounted the old E-350 machines to < $300, that would an excellent deal.

This is really a notebook, but without an internal DVD drive. It's 12" display resolution is big enough to completely display full 720p video and having HDMI output, you can put your stream video on to a TV. It's keyboard is basically full size. $299 is probably where the price point for these type of machines are, but this is considered a highend one. There really isn't a great deal out there for one of these 12" machines.

+1, I got one of the E350 machines about 6 months ago thanks to SD at BB for $380, it was a bargain at that price so $300 would be great.
The E350 is great for browsing, media consumption (HDMI out) and casual gaming (Portal/HL2/FarCry i.e. last gen FPS games all work really well on this). I don't know anything about the E300 or E450 but I'm really impressed with the value of the E350, so these offers on the E300 and E450 are worth considering if you're in the market for a netbook but need a little more horespower than the usual 10.1" netbooks provide...

I was lucky enough to get in on the 11.6" Acer TimelineX deal on the i7 with Xbox 360 for $499+tax. Great system. If you can wait, I'd hold out for that over this.

based purely on price to performance ratio, this is extremely expensive. unless you really really want the small screen, you're getting hosed. dozens of 14 and 15 inch i3s and better have been under $400, a few under $300 recently. I stand by my statement that this computer is a ripoff.

You are right, it is. Good thing this isn't a netbook. I have run Matlab on my E-350 x120e as well as several other more powerful programs. It's not a fast system but it's in the same performance ball park as the N280/N450 single core Atom systems. My x120e is a replacement for my Toshiba Atom powered netbook. Between the extra screen resolution (1366x768 vs 1024x600) and the extra graphics power, I almost never notice that this computer isn't as fast as the office machine I was using (a Xeon system with 16gb of ram and a great graphics card). Most of the time I don't need any more power than the AMD chip.

It's only a ripoff if you don't want the smaller size. I agree that the $250 Acer from BB is in many ways a better system. It has more CPU and is about equal on the GPU. The Acer also has a DVD drive. But the HP is an ultra portable. The Acer isn't. I got an 11.6" computer because I DON'T want to carry a 14-15" computer. I already have one, I don't want to carry it. Your point is like saying a Toyota Tacoma is a lousy deal because a Camry is cost the same yet gets better mileage. Well that's great but useless if you are buying the Tacoma to hall stuff in the bed.
If you want to make a useful point you might consider suggesting comparable alternatives. For instance, for $260 (it was $200 not long ago) you could get an Acer AO722 from Target. It had similar specs but had the weaker C-50 CPU. Well for $200 I might consider it instead of this. Not as powerful but probably good enough for many jobs and $170 cheaper.
Another alternative is the Asus 12.1" system for $310 (a current deal on the forum). It specs basically the same but I like the design of the HP better (and the design of my x120e better still).
So yes, if people want the most bang for the buck and don't value portability, you are right, there are better choices. If instead they really value portability but don't need the best performance, well I would suggest this is worth looking at.

That is just wrong. Go search on this product on this forum. In March, the best deal with $412. The only other time it was $370 was back in July. I am not saying this is a great deal, but this is the lowest price this machine has been offered. I would love to see it for $299.

Haha, I just bought one of these earlier this morning. There are two other ways to get $30 off of these. One is the code for the home store SAVE30HP. The other is the HP Academy store for students and educators and use the $10 off code for orders over $50 SVP471394. I used the last one because it got my total down to $393.03 before tax which is a dollar less and I am an educator. Its going to be nice along with the cowboom 1TB portable this morning on the front page.
I HIGHLY recommend getting the $25 AMD E-450 processor upgrade if you will be watching any media. The core speeds are only 1.65GHz which is only a small boost compared to the 1.6GHz of the previous E-350, but it also allows for other importable things like the "Turbo" ability on the GPU that allows it to raise the 80 stream processors from 508mhz up to 600mhz compared to the E-350 which was 492mhz all the time. The E-450 also allows for faster RAM speed (DDR3-1333) which is very important as the GPU uses shared memory with the processor and the HDMI 1.3b spec which allows for 3D displays. The E-300 is lower spec in everything compared to the E-350 used in the dm1z from January until before the refresh on September 21st. Don't get any of the other upgrades offered, they are double the price of faster components from third party and the dm1z is extremely easy to upgrade without voiding your warranty. The whole bottom comes off without a screwdriver. :)

I was in the same boat and just ordered the TimelineX. I think the extra $150 is worth the future-proofing that comes with the i5/i7 cpu's. It's now $550 and $590 straight from amazon for both Timelinex models. Also - the TimelineX was slightly smaller and lighter. The power supply is also 2x lighter and smaller than the HP brick version.

This computer has faster graphics speeds and much longer battery life then the i3 with intel HD graphics solutions. Some of us appreciate that.
I think what your trying to say is that this is not a desktop replacement, and its not. It is something extremely portable for the road and class and a great HTPC solution for the home. It will play many games at decent frame rates, just on an 11.6" screen (why worry about 1080p on an 11.6" screen when you have 720p covered?). I think your missing the point of what an ultra-portable notebook is for.

You are comparing this to the wrong model of dm1z. See here: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/hp-pavilion-dm1image-5.jpg
The x120e with E-350 gets hotter and does not have as nice of a keyboard IMO. Plus, that battery juts out. And is gets worse marks in every benchmark even compared to the previous model you returned. See review here: http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/07/lenovo-thinkpad-x120e-review/
This laptop can be upgraded to 8gb of ram, keyboard is nice, hdmi is a plus, however, E-series cpu's are slow. Unless you really need a 12" screen, there are better choices available.

No, the HP's were over $400 when they came out. The Asus is a good alternative and I don't know that I would get the HP over the Asus when you factor in tax and the rest. However, HP does have a few advantages. The smaller size (not much but smaller). Potentially nicer keyboard; the previous version had a rather nice keyboard vs the so-so keyboards on many of the Asus models I've tried but I haven't tried that exact unit. Claimed better battery life. I would want to see some side by side reviews first. The HP almost certainly has the better touch pad. The new touchpad has two buttons, no button bar.
Still, hard to argue against the price difference. Then again, I like my over $400 Lenovo so what do I know.

paid 332 for my lenovo x120e with an e-350
i had the dm1z and returned it for the x120e. The build quality is a lot different
You are comparing this to the wrong model of dm1z. See here: http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/hp-pavilion-dm1image-5.jpg
Where did you get such a great price? Man, that's a great deal.
I haven't seen the new HP but compared to the old one I prefer the Lenovo keyboard. I like having the dedicated page up and down buttons and the pointing stick. The HP keyboard is good and I wouldn't mind it either. I was on the fence with the two systems and it was basically the click pad that pushed me to the Thinkpad.
While I don't like the looks of the battery out the back I don't actually mind it too much. I've now had three computers with that setup. It actually makes it a bit easier to carry when the screen is open and I would rather the battery goes out the back and keeps the computer thinner vs lifts up the back.

i was referring to the keyboard collapse, panel gaps, and jumpy touchpad of the previous generation.
oh, and how always one, two, or three keys made distinct loud click noises...as if 2 pieces of plastic are snapping against each other
all of the reviews are for the previous generation...i want to see reviews for this refresh gen. i don't want to make the same mistake by buying a piece of garbage like i did at best buy with the previous gen for $380...three times...before i threw in the towel and got my money back
As I recall you had really, unusually bad luck. Not sure what was up with that but if your experience was even remotely typical we would have heard more horror stories. BTW, I had a similar issue with an iPod. It took a while to figure out that my iPod issues were due to magnets in the iPod case.

HP is shameless. Most E-350 laptops have been on sale at $300 or less, they still price theirs as $50-$100 more. Shame shame shame.
Check out the price of the Lenovo x120e. Also I think only now are we seeing E-series stuff for much less than $400 in a 12" or smaller system. I've seen plenty of $300 15.6" computers but at that point I start to agree with people who say you can get a lot more CPU for the money.

I bought one at BB for $380. I really like it. I wanted something small but was more powerful than a netbook. It handles everything that I need.
The battery life is great. It can handle most games. The sounds quality is fantastic. HDMI output.
Yes some laptops are cheaper/better deals for the size.
But a Macbook air is $1100 and people dont scream as much at the people who buy those.
If you want something bigger than a netboook, smaller than 14", HDMI output, fantastic speakers, extra long battery life, full windows 7, and is under $400 then this is a great buy.
If you want something different then its not.

Then again, I like my over $400 Lenovo so what do I know.
i personally own the 1215 series and their keyboard is one of the best i tell ya.
it does bend in a little when pushed but its very tolerable.
it does however, have very crappy click buttons.

I agree that it is too much for a E-300 dm1z. But compared to the new E-450 dm1z for $393, that deal isn't so slick. You would still have 8gb of ram possible (DDR3-1333 at that!), about 3x the graphical speed of the intel HD graphics (80 stream processors at 600mhz on turbo, 508mhz all the time), an extra 320mhz per core (out-of-order execution will make it seem even faster then that!), HDMI 1.3b support (yeah, I do 3D, do you?), the beats audio (it is not just an EQ, the grounded output makes a difference in bg noise) and an overall a nice slick body design to go with that... totally worth the $94 difference between the sale prices in my book.

Unless you really need a 12" screen, there are better choices available.
AMD E-300/E-350, Passmark = 725
AMD E-450, Passmark = 729
Intel Core i5-2520M, Passmark = 3603
But you're not going to get a Core i5 11-12" for less than 400. The deal is the price/performance, not just the performance.
As others have mentioned earlier though, the ASUS 1215N deal earlier had similar specs but for $299.

As a studio engineer, you probably know that having a good ground on the output is important, especially in a system as noisy as a computer. That is something nice that the beats spec does do, because onboard audio is always crap. I'm sure it has teeny tiny little capacitors that couple it that are going to cause a lot of roll off and the EQ is horrible (hopefully that is able to be disabled). I guess my point is that it at least put some focus on the design so you aren't getting a high pitched squeal when your computer is playing your game and the soundstage will be good enough to hear what direction the fire is coming from. This is something important to non studio engineers.

That certainly wasn't a bad deal for $300, quite a good one in fact. In comparison to the HP I would think the graphics might not be as good (most of the Intel GPUs aren't as good but I think the latest ones are). I would also be interested to know if the battery life is better. Either way, I think $300 for that type of system is very good and only the Target AO722 with the low power C-50 chip is a yet better deal.
BTW, I do like having HDMI on my little computer. I sometimes watch Amazon videos and having an easy connection to the big TV is nice. It helps that the computer sound is carried to the TV via the same connection. I also have used it instead of VGA when I've used external displays. It's not a make or break for me but I've certainly taken advantage of the fact that I have it.

My understanding is the E-350's graphics are about on par with the new Intel HD 3000 setup. The older Intel stuff was a step back thus sometimes you would have that "faster CPU but Intel GMA vs slower CPU but AMD graphics" debate. Something like a Sandybridge related Pentium or even Celeron with the HD 3000 setup should be faster than the E-350 package.

It appears that the E-350 is significantly better than the 1st gen core i3/i5 unless it is a CPU-heavy game:

The only reasonably priced Sandy bridge I have found is the Samsung Series 3 at Staples, which has the Intel Core i3-2357M processor (1.30GHz) for $550. The downside is that it only has one memory slot and pathetic battery life. Otherwise it would be a nice computer.

I don't have a clue what the cheapest SB based Intel machine would be. BB recently had a $250 deal for an Acer based on the Celeron P4600 which was the Arrandale family. Based on that I'm assuming it had the Intel HD graphics (~1500 vs ~2000 for the E-350). That's slower but not worlds slower given that the CPU is quite a bit faster. Of course none of these are fast GPUs.

That advice doesn't work for everyone. I wasn't interested in spending anything over $450 when I replaced my netbook with my x120e. A little more was way too much when $400 was really more than I wanted to spend. Of course, this is why I also suggest people look at the cheaper, but not as nice in my opinion, Acer and Asus models. Yeah, I guess my point was that there aren't any Sandybridge options in this price range (that I know of), but if you want to trade some of the E-350 GPU power for CPU power, you could go with the Acer. Once you want more than that, you have to shell out more money.

Yeah. The Acer this morning with the E-350 was a good deal. This PC has a 10-20% performance increase, but its also at a 25% price increase. I am personally thankful that changing the hard drive doesn't void the warranty or require removing 14 screws and the mousepad doesn't require modding to be satisfactory.

MBP is for running mainstage and logic pro on stage, mac pro is for doing my real audio work have fun with you i7 pc. 3d with glasses is stupid in your home, I already have glasses don't want to wear 2 pairs

This is a GREAT netbook. I've purchased it via through the $75 off coupon a while back + student discount. Total price with tax (free shipping because i was complaining to the manager) was $310 :) WIN! This is even faster than one of my 1.5 year old laptop.

Can someone help me? I'm not too informed about laptop components and such but want the best for my money and to be able to play my HD files smoothly on a small light weight portable unit. First question is....is $50 to upgrade from 250 GB to 500 GB on it a good investment and second is....the two 6 cell batteries at 50% off for an additional $60. How much is a battery normally? Thanks!

Long story short, none of the upgrades other than the E-450 processor are worth it. I bought the 1TB portable drive off the front page yesterday for $50. $60 for an extra battery is too much. I personally plan to stick a SSD in mine as my boot drive and for programs and use the 1TB as personal storage for things like music and video. Considering the model just came out on the 21st of September, it is hard to give you a normal price yet on the accessories.

FYI. Costco members can customize/buy this through Costco for about $30 more, but it get you a 90-day no-hassle return policy, an additional year of warranty, and their tech concierge service.... in case anyone is interested.
Question... on costco's website, it looks like you can only order the e-300 version... which is technically 1.3ghz, not the alluded 1.6ghz (according to other posters). I guess that's the one downfall with going with costco. :\

They "explicitly" have a version with the E-300 chip for $400+s/h+tax (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11680382&whse=BC&Ne=5000135+4000000&eCat=BC|84&N=4047229%204294899857&Mo=1&No=1&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&topnav=)... but don't get this one. the $25 shipping kills it. You can configure it yourself for less (free s/h) in the customize link, or you can get the E-450 for only a few dollar more.
What you want to do is go here (http://www.costco.com/Common/Category.aspx?ec=BC-EC10590-Cat56670&pos=4&whse=BC&topnav=&cat=28163&eCat=BC|84|56670|28163&lang=en-US) and then click on the customize link, which essentially takes you to the HP configurator. Then you can build the system like you would on the HP site. It will be a few dollars more expensive and you can't use coupons as far as I know. With the E-450, I got a final price after tax of about $460 (free s/h). Direct from the HP site you can get the same for about $422 after coupon and tax (free s/h).
