Great deal on an Apple MacBook Pro 15" at IBM SPP. This is the unibody version. Says "refurbished," but in all reality these were probably used by IBM employees. Comes with a FREE 1 Year extended warranty from IBM. Price is great, but NO Operating System is installed.

Nice find OP. I wonder if they were refurbished by IBM or Apple. Apple refurbs are just about the only refurbs I really trust enough to buy. But if these are just simply used by IBM, it's still a pretty good deal. Similar used laptops are going on eBay for ~$760-850.
EDIT: I wonder why they list the OS as "No Operating System". I wonder if this is just because they didn't have a check box for OSX in their listing software.

there are a couple of ways,... you can burn the OS to a flash drive (that is bigger than 4gb), you can burn it to a dvd...... or you can burn it to a external hard drive...., and just install boot

Any system that he controls; so as long as his girlfriend uses his Apple ID then it would work. Otherwise redownloading the Lion installer and mounting it to a DVD gets around that limitation.

I don't think that's fair. This is still a decently-specced machine for the price. Bluetooth, webcam, LED 1440x900 display, firewire. You may be able to find similar specs for the price, but I don't think you're overpaying at $600-$700. A laptop is more than just its processor speed.

A slickdeal master does not ask such questions. A slickdeal master has already bought 5 and is on the way to making a quick $1000.
That said, I sold a machine identical to this for $975 just a couple months ago. So I should be thrilled right? Nope, that was the best laptop I've ever owned. I wish I hadn't sold it, and I'm currently looking for another good MBP deal to replace it. I can't believe I was too late for this deal. Once you've used a MBP, every other laptop seems like a heap of cheap plastic with rock-bottom quality. Even if you're running Windows, if you need a serious laptop, MBP is the only way to go. Bluetooth - You can get a bluetooth dongle for like $2..how is this a selling point?
Webcam - You can get a decent webcam for $20..how is this a selling point?
LED 1440x900 - This isn't exactly a revolutionary feature

And if you're using a laptop as a portable computer, maybe you don't want some monoprice dongles and cables hanging all over your computer, like when you're at a cafe or at in the meeting room? A 1440x900 LED display is not a revolutionary feature, but it's definitely a welcome one. Good colors, good resolution (you can have your XGA resolutions, I want better). The LED makes the battery life on these computers amazing, definitely much much much better than my better-specced Toshiba. I find myself reaching for my girlfriend's laptop over mine more and more often.
At least give credit where credit is due. You're so quick to bash Apple products because they're Apple products; you're just as bad as the blind fanboys.

But you can't. The best you could do is run OSX86 and even then, hackintoshes are a nightmare to upgrade assuming all your devices are properly detected and everything works (which is unlikely everything to be 100% working in the first place).

lol, I'm hardly an Apple basher. All I'm saying is if you're going to justify paying a premium for something, you have to come harder than "it has bluetooth!". Battery life is justifiable, so is LED if that's important to you, but a webcam and bluetooth? And unless you're a video editor or frequently make use of external hard drives, firewire? Btw, these macbooks are the original unibody 2008 ones with the removable battery(only 300 cycles for 80% charge vs 1000 cycles for non-removables ones). Also, these batteries had the bulging problem.
If yours has a bulge, take it to the apple store and they will give you a new one even if it is out of warranty. They do it on a case-by-case basis so pull out the charm.

Why aren't you able to right click with one hand? I have a MBP and have always been able to right click with one hand, and that's on the trackpad. I also keep a wireless mouse for my Hubby (he hates anything but a mouse), and that right clicks just like a PC.

3 year old technology, still $800 on eBay
how?1?!? HOW?!?!!?!?
Apple has a fantastic resale value because it stays viable much longer than a PC. My kids are on a 4yo & 5yo MacBook, and both work as well as most brand new PCs.
Before my MBP, I averaged a Windows based laptop every 2 years because I would kill them. I've had the MBP over 3 years so far and it's still going strong. Add to that, Apple's excellent customer service, and the systems have actually been less expensive than my Windows based units.
A 3-4yo Apple is still very viable. A 3-4yo Windows based unit is a doorstop.

You have to set the system preferences to allow the trackpad to have the right click functionality. Otherwise you will have to alt click. Should be under system preferences and then trackpad.

I've never even owned a single apple product but as far as the macbook pro laptops go, they retain their value extremely good
+ bring you a better user experience along the way
as long as you don't ruin it completely, but I saw a really beat up MPB laptop with the entire bottom half cover missing and it was still going for only $50 less than a regular used one

I think you're right about the initial investment, and also they are conditioned by Windows units to expect a short lifespan. They don't realize how much longer the life is for an Apple computer than for a Windows unit. Quite frequently, when Apple users upgrade, it is because they want the latest toy, not because they have to upgrade because their system is no longer working well, as is normally the case with Windows systems.
BUT Windows made sure I had a nice salary for a long time <grin>.

I purchased a machine yesterday which had 4gb of ram and 320gb HD but the price was $599.20+tax. Best bet is to call and if they say they have it in stock place the order over the phone right then.

I got mine. Installed OS just now.
Condition is very good. Some scratches on the bottom plate, but that is expected for a used laptop.
My battery was brand new, has only 10 or so cycles on it. 100% health.
Hard drive is 7200 rpm so its a bit noisy. Mine still has Apple Care until the end of this month(3yrs from 2008 I guess), so I'm going to my local apple store and get everything checked out. Fans, logic board, etc.
I ordered the 3GB version, but mine came with 4GB(1 Dimm). Going to buy another 4GB dimm.
Even though its a core 2 duo, its still super fast. I see no speed difference between this and my core i5 13" MBP. Mite be due to the 7200 rpm drive.
Also, warranty is 1yr from IBM. Its either repair or refund according to the document.
If they get more stock, don't hesitate to buy it. Sure $500 is a bit much for an almost 3yr old laptop, but the specs are decent. Especially the dual video cards. If anything, you can sell it in 2 years and still get $350-$400 back.
Awesome deal. Thanks OP!

It should give you cycle count.
I heard if it's under 300 and your battery does not hold charge, apple will replace is for free.

You can also use a program called iStatPro. Its free and it gives u the battery information and all the heat/temp information from the sensors. Also shows how fast each of the fans are spinning.
Best part is, you can put it as a widget on the dashboard.
http://www.islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
Check you warranty to see if yours still has apple care. If it does, get everything checked at the apple store(logic board, fans, HD, battery). I'm going there today to get my noisy hard drive replace and possibly one of the fans. https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
As for SSD, its pretty easy. Just pop off the battery cover, remove 2 of the HD screws and slide in the SSD. Wait till black friday. We should see 128 GB SSD for $120-$130.

Do these come with chargers?
Also, I was able to order a similar configuration through calling in (2.5ghz, 2GB); however, upon looking up the model number online (sales rep couldn't provide), I believe it is the older non-unibody version.
Looks like I will be making use of the 7-day return policy :(

definitely worth it to get SSD. atleast 2X performance increase, save battery life and reduce noise. the only con for SSD is the size/cost ratio.
im definitely going to pick up an SSD on black friday. hopefully the 128gb drive will be $120ish range.
yes it comes with a power adaptor.

When did you make the order? I've called several times this week and they keep saying they're out of stock of any MBP.

Placed original order on Tuesday, but did not receive any shipping notice after confirmation email. Called them up on Thursday, and was offered a lesser-spec'd model. Did not realize until after placing the order that it may be a non-unibody version. Too bad...
They didn't even offer me a lesser model. They just canceled my order. :(

Thanks OP!
You were lucky.
I paid $70 extra for the 4GB configuration. Had a 5200rpm drive and the battery had 565 cycles on it.

Cool. Thats the same as mine. I had the sticker too :). Does your left fan make a slight rattle nose when you pick up the laptop or tilt it? Its nothing major, but I hope its not a sign of the fan nearing the end of its life.
Either way, if you have Apple Care left, I think its a good idea to get the fans replaced. Perhaps the thermal grease as well.

did anyone take this to Apple store yet? i see what ibm did here. all these are have about 1-2 months left on Apple care. they passed on their future headache to us :) i got one that had a very dark screen. did a PRAM reset to take care of that but the wifi is broken as well (wont locate any wifi networks, probably doesnt even turn wifi on). battery has 800+ cycles. i am thinking of taking it to Apple store before returning to ibm for warranty/refund. if anyone got one loked at under Applecare pls let me know how it went...

I got lucky and bought the last one they had. $599 for the 4gb ram+320HD. Comes out $613 after taxes (KY)
They will only offer the 90 day warranty initially but you should ask for the 1 year, still free. They were also offering a 2gb thumb drive for $1.xx.
4-7 Business day shipping via ups ground and you can return it within 7 days.
For the ones who already got their mbp's, what problems did you encounter? should i install snow leopard or lion? what other good mac apps do i need to install(iLife, Word, Etc)? And whats a good hard case? Can i buy additional warranty from apple or other?
and last, can anyone post pics of the mbp's they recieved? black keyboard? thanks!

1st of all let me say the 15 inch macbook pro is beautiful. I want to keep it!!!! First things i noticed is that it was packaged somewhat nicely as seen from the first picture, I'm guessing that because ups takes care of packages there was no need for other protection.
1. The keyboard/trackpad area is flawless, as well as the back of the computer.
2. The inside of the macbook was in good condition, although i noticed some dust on the fans (as would be expected), so you may want to get some pressured air and clean them.
3. The backside of the macbook has heavy scratches and many signs of usage. There are also some nicks in some areas on the sides and back of the mac.
4. My battery is virtually brand new, having only 49 cycles, so it must have been replaced. In contrast the mbp that i purchased in August has been through 15 cycles....(haven't used it that much-still addicted to windows). So hopefully you will be getting a brand new battery as well.
5. The mac is 35 months old i.e. 2 years and 11 months... The apple care runs out November 19, 2011, so in 29 days.
6. I as well ordered the 3gb's of ram 250gb hard drive space configuration and paid 560 with tax, but i ended up with 4gb's of ram and 250gb hard drive space.
7. Lion installed easily and with no problems (EDIT: Screen flickers once every hour-apple care is taking care of it), and the trackpad works with lion (like the 3 fingers up, and 3 down and 1 up-to show the launchpad), so all good here.
8. In the package you get a charger, a invoice in english (and spanish/french?), and a disclaimer. You should also get a 2 lb package that just has a sheet stating the warranty of 1 year.
9. Other than that i can't think of anything else, i haven't checked the dvd drive but i will do that later. Please check out the slide show and let me know if you have any questions or would like any other pics.

It was just me not having the brightness up on that.... i just put it up and i think its the same on both. As far as the battery depending on the condition... apple may go ahead and give you a new one.... if not ibm will take care of it for the next year. Screens are pretty good, but i must admit 15 is better than 13~

Just got mine.
Topside of the exterior looks flawless; side ports have dust collecting (expected); bottomside has a few surface scratches here and there and a slight dent in one area.
Apple Care until Nov. 19.
4GB RAM 2 DIMMS with 250GB HD
Right side of the space bar is jammed/sunken in :( Will definitely take to Apple to get checked out.
Also noticed lots of dust in the fan/speaker holes.
Battery has 276 cycles; someone mentioned that these batteries have a lifespan of 500 cycles? What kind of battery life are you guys getting? Maybe I can get the battery replaced right before my AC expires.
Overall, I'm very happy with this purchase. Thanks again, OP!!!

Cool. Everyone has gotten decent machines so far. Those who have lots of cycles on battery, try to get it replaced asap. The battery is pretty expensive, so don't let apple care run out. Mine had ~11 cycles so Im pretty pleased.
Did anyone get a 7200 rpm drive? Mine drive is somewhat loud. I hear it more than the fans.

If you get a battery with high cycles (which from reading I think everyone that ordered the 4gb ram one did, as opposed to those who ordered the 3gb), what can you really say to have it replaced? Batteries are consumed goods, I don't think Apple will replace it. But if you guys can get it replaced, please share.

Also, the battery and RAM correlation is just an observation I made. Let me know if anyone is the exception (ie ordered the 4gb and got a low-cycle battery). I personally ordered that configuration but have yet to check my cycle count (it's at the Apple store for diagnostics), and am slowly accepting my fate. Feel free to prove me wrong.

You ordered the 4gb configuration huh? The battery is rated at 300 life cycles. At that point, it should show 80% health. With your high of health, it means the battery is well-taken care of, but still old.

Below information is for our Macbook's
About Battery Cycles
A charge cycle means using all of the battery’s power, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a single charge. For instance, you could use your notebook for an hour or more one day, using half its power, and then recharge it fully. If you did the same thing the next day, it would count as one charge cycle, not two, so it may take several days to complete a cycle.
Batteries have a limited amount of cycles before they are considered to be consumed and a replacement battery would be recommended. The cycle count limit will vary based on your Apple computer. Consult the table below to see the maximum cycle count for your computer's battery before it is considered consumed:
MacBook Pro (15-inch Late 2008) 500 CYCLES

nice. very nice. now whats the best way to test the battery health? is the "time remaining" a fairly accurate indicator? or do i need to loop a movie on wifi streaming or something? I am a bit concerned by the discovery that max cycle is 500 when mine says 807.. the battery itself seems to be fine in the few minutes i used it. I will chat with ibm to see what they think of that.. sending a battery thats way beyond its purported life :)
