its a piece of tyvek, how could it ever protect from a scanner.....also there is no mention on the site that it protects your RFID info, just the magnetic strip from damage and scratching. glad to see free things though, even if they are the same thing you get at the bank with a new card. thanks

i had one of these before...it didnt seem to work at all, but then i kinda questioned why would someone get this anyway? I thought it was funny but most people dont know that ALL recent US drivers licences contain the RFID chips too, its not just credit cards, so am i suppose to try to put my drivers licence in here too? Not likely, i dont think the thing works but whether or not it does its free so for those wanting to try it go all for it, but just know its not just credit cards and even your drivers licence that contain RFID chips these days i wouldnt be surprised if some clothing/hats had the RFID chips....
Oh and im referring to modern day drivers licences like within the last 2-3 years if yours is older then ur lucky....but wait until you need to renew later on down the road and get a new card lol

I got something like this with my passport card from the gov't. This looks exactly like it (a little Tyvek-ish sleeve). I questioned the effectiveness when I got it because it was so thin, but if they send it as protection for the passport info, it's got to work somewhat at least. In for one.
p.s. Site says "*credit card not included" under the picture. Really? Was that disclaimer necessary?

I just observed today that altoids tin cans can fit a stack of credit card sized cards in it rather nicely with a few folded bills + coins....
This weekend, I'm going to add anti-static shielding on the inside... probably taped and test if scanning is still possible. if not, that's going to be my wallet... and my wallet-wallet will be the one i hand over with fake cards and crap in case of getting mugged. =D
But having this to be place holders wouldn't hurt either.

LOL! The only thing this sleeve does is it protects (to some degree) the magnetic strip and the card from scratches. That's all.
So, why do they mention RFID? Why do they state that RFID transmits your data? Why to they talk about RFID at all, when the protective sleeve has absolutely nothing to do with RFID whatsoever?
They do it because a generic simplistic lemming will assume that using this sleeve will somehow prevent their personal data from being transmitted. It is implied in the message. Even though they don't say so (and the sleeve doesn't do anything of the sort), they know that every lemming will jump to this conclusion. This is a like marketing research: an attempt to measure how retarded the consumer community is.
Also LOL at lemmings who squeal "free! free!". The usability of this sleeve is exactly the same as the usability of the paper envelopes in which you receive marketing spam in your mailbox. Yet somehow I don't see too many people jumping with joy screaming "yay! free envelopes!". Yet at the same time they are willingly ordering this junk here :)

Yeah, there are a lot of urban legends out there. It's likely only the border states will ever do it - Washington and New York are the only ones I know of that have the tags. That's why only driver's licenses from those states are accepted as identification at border crossings - if your license is from another state, you have to have a passport to re-enter the US after visiting Canada or Mexico.
Edit: did a little more research, Michigan, Vermont, Washington and New York are the only states that are putting RFID tags in driver's licenses. California driver's licenses do not have RFID tags and there are no current (public) plans to add them.

Haha, people like you are hilarious. You think there is some complex market research experiment going on with this deal? Holy crap, it's a crappy free item. They're simply giving it away to farm quality leads, which are worth a pretty penny to a company. If you think it's something more grandiose than that, then you're simply delusional.
What kind of metric is "how retarded the consumer community is"? You simply sound like someone trying reallllly hard to sound intelligent.

Why do you think it has an RFID tag? You can't see the tag, the only way to really know is to scan it. You may be confusing RFID with EDL requirements.
All I'm saying is that the US government and the state of California say they do not have RFID tags in the drivers licenses.
decolores9
11-05-2011, 09:27 AM
Guess I'll use foil for blocking transmissions.
This type of RFID tag can only be read from a few inches away, so there really is no need to block the "transmission".
These tags are passive devices - they resonate when they are "illuminated" with a particular radio signal. Technically, they "reflect" rather than "transmit" - which is one reason the reader has to be within 6" or so of the tag to read it.
BTW, foil won't prevent the reader from reading it, either.

Sure you can. On my Chase card you can hold it up to the light and view where the chip is; it also is bulky so you can see where the card is slightly raised. I may be confusing this with other RFID tagging systems that are more discrete but I would assume most are visible.

Why do you think it has an RFID tag? You can't see the tag, the only way to really know is to scan it. You may be confusing RFID with EDL requirements.
All I'm saying is that the US government and the state of California say they do not have RFID tags in the drivers licenses.
I have had mine scanned and it does have it, i have a friend whos law enforcement and he said all the new licences are getting them. The new licences are the ones with all the fancy colors and you can feel surfaces on the card. According to what i was told all the new ones should have them mainly because it makes it easier to keep record of drunk drivers pretty much was what i was told, but old licences should not have them. Either way i guess i can only say what i was told and that at least some licences in California have them.

Scanned with what? RFID scanners are not something you will find very many places, and they have to be set for the frequency of the tag. Not many people or places have an extra $5,000 piece of equipment laying around for use of the general public. I seriously doubt there is anyplace you could have had it scanned for an RFID tag - you are likely confusing smart cards with RFID tags.

Kind of scary that a police officer is that misinformed. Again, according to the federal government, only four states have RFID tags in licenses and no other states plan to add them. The only value of an RFID tag in a license is for identification at the border. They do not help with tracking drunk driver or anything else. Perhaps your friend was also confusing RFID tags with smart cards - data can be added to a smart card, RFID tags of the type in driver's licenses are read only.

Um, we were talking about RFID tags, not fancy colors or EDLs. You cannot feel or see an RFID tag, the only way to detect the presence of the tag is with exactly the right type of scanner. I think you are confused about RFID tags and are confusing them with either smart cards or enhanced documentation techniques.
Either way i guess i can only say what i was told and that at least some licences in California have them.
Again, the state of California and the federal government say that no California driver's license has an RFID tag.

My license which is the newer one that are supposed to have them thats why i described it, i trust law enforcement over normal joes so i dont know and it was scanned with security equipment not that that should matter any, anyway maybe its true maybe its not but youd be surprised what the government says, the governement still says area 51 doesnt exist and just about everybody everywhere knows it does...

There IS no "newer license that is supposed to have them" according to the state of California and the federal government. Think what you like, but the urban legends you have heard are not accurate.
it was scanned with security equipment
At a border crossing? That's the only "security equipment" presently available to scan that type of RFID tag. IMost likely you are confusing RFID tags with smart cards, since what you describe is not possible or accurate. If you aren't willing to provide details, we won't be able to definitely help you figure out more specifically what you are confused about.
the governement still says area 51 doesnt exist
Nope, more urban legend. The US government has acknowledged the existence of both Edwards Air Force Base and the section of that base popularly known as "Area 51".
You are welcome to believe what you like, I'm just sharing the facts.
