Hi,

I am in desperate need of a rock solid router. When I say rock solid, I mean one that I do not have to reset every time I want to download something to get optimal speed, doesnt crap out randomly, and does not take naps.

My history with routers:

Wrt54g with DD-WRT - This router was great. Used it in my house for over 10 years! Yeap finally after adding a fan into at the last few years, it bit the dust.

Linksys E1000 - Yuck. Replaced the wrt54g with this. I was amazed at the speeds I have been missing. After only a few days it started to crap out on me. This thing SUCKS. I have some wireless G and N devices as well as some wired computers in the house. I found it refurbished at comp usa for $25 out the door. I needed in a pinch. Worked fine for a few days. Now its complete garbage and goes in and out all the time.

Im willing to spend $150~. Less would be better if possible have to BUT I want a rock solid router. I have been looking at the E4200, but im not sure. Please, someone suggest to me a real stout router than I can plug in and forget about. One that will always give me the best wireless speeds for my price range.

Thanks everyone!

several articles on current models
also this months paper copy had a review on about 7 routers in the 100-250 range, i think their top pick of the bunch was 150ish

ASUSTeK COMPUTER ASUS RT-N56U Wireless router
while i haven't gone and looked at too deeply, it is made by asus and they don't make crap.

Another vote for the ASUS RT-N16 but only with Tomato installed. It occasionally goes on sale for under $70. I used the WRT54GS for a long time, also with Tomato, and the Asus was a nice upgrade.

I'm not a router expert, but i'm in a similar situation to yours. However you didn't specify what you WANT your router to do.

The problem I'm seeing with new "top of the line" consumer routers is that the firmware is buggy and limited, and DD-WRT support (if any) is lacking. Here's my short list of routers from which i haven't decided yet which is the best for me:

ASUS Black Diamond Dual-Band Gigabit Wireless-N Router - RT-N56U - $118.98
Cisco Maximum Performance Wireless-N Router Linksys E4200 - $109.99
Belkin N750 DB Wireless Dual-Band N+ Router F9K1103 - $98.99
Netgear N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4000 - $128.35
NETGEAR N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4500 - $179.00
Cisco High Performance Dual-Band N Router Linksys E3200 - $79.99

Look into the ASUS RT-N16 i posted above. I has DD-WRT support. It has 2 USB ports. You can have both a printer hooked up to it so you can print wirelessly from any pc that catched the signal.. and even hook up a USB hard drive to stream/access video/picture/data content from it at the same time. Has great reviews as well.

Thanks for all the replys. I really like the sounds of the ASUS RT-N16, but it I want to try one with a dual band. What I hve noticed form the E1000 is that when a G device and an N device is connected, it seems like its slower. Im wondering if I get a dual band, I can use the 5ghz for the wireless n and the G can have the 2.4. Sounds about right? Anyone have any input on this?

EDIT:

Im thinking of getting this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833320062). Dual band and good reviews. I dont need VPN or any of that.

When you connect a G and N device to a single radio it will default to the lowest speed (G) and service both devices at the lower bandwidth. You need to upgrade your G device or get a dual radio router.

I have no opinion on the one you mentioned.
