I can't argue it's a not good price, but it always seems to me the issue w/ color laser printers is the cost of consumables, not the printer itself. I'm not sure I'd buy one if it was half this price.

Can you elaborate? I am contemplating whether color is better. I really don't want 2 printers.

I'm only saying that color laser printing is pretty expensive compared to anything else, whether B&W laser or inkjet. I'm betting you only get starter drums, and when it comes time for replacement, expect to pay over $200 to replace the set. Of course, I’d expect to get much better "per page" costs compared to color inkjet. Just make sure you take that into consideration. It's easy to get enamored by the immediate purchase and not consider the long term costs. But if you do, and it works for you, then by all means purchase it.

Almost bought one but found this review from Staples:

I bought this printer thinking it was a good deal. The company lists print output expectations at between 1000 and 1,500 copies per toner. I have printed less than 1,000 copies; have replaced ALL FOUR TONERS and now the Yellow is empty again. I only got 385 copies out of the most recent yellow. Samsung's service is abysmal. I have called a dozen times; each time I get a new ticket number. I have to explain the situation all over again. They never follow up on the call and then I need a new ticket number! They refuse to deal with the issue of toner usage; basically saying it's my problem. How do you like that! So, this printer is going into the trash where it belongs, and I will NEVER purchase another Samsung product. I have a number of high-priced appliances and electronics made by them, but refuse to purchase anything else. There are a lot of better companies out there that stand behind their products. I've been duped, but it won't happen again! Caveat Emptor!

Is there cheap replacement toner for this? If not, the final cost of using this could be expensive. Based on that review, print 400 pages and may need to replace 4 toners which OEM cost like $220+

If generic toner cost $130 for a set and it can only print about 400 color pages. That means it cost $0.325 dollar a page!!

I picked one up for the price of $58. I read somewhere it's possible to refill the toner cartridges.
It's worth a try it even if I have to buy 3rd party cartridge refills. Can't be more expensive than inkjets.

Toners are always expensive whether you have black or color printers.

That review doesn't tell all the story. The number of pages printed per unit is with some determined coverage, say 15%, since normally the page will be white with letters and some pictures, like a magazine page. If you print full blown pictures all the time the toner will not last the expected number the manufacturer specified.

Or should I just do the buy now and think about it later?

I have this printer and it is possible to use less expensive toner refills instead of purchasing the expensive OEM cartridges. Be warned, that each cartridge has a chip in it to prevent/discourage such activity. There is also a reset chip available if you want to bypass the OEM chip.

Most people say that you should be good for at least two refills before the chip locks you out from further refilling, but you have to get to the cartridge before it reaches 25%.

Bottles of toner (black and colors) run less than $15 each (you may need as many as 4). Chips to defeat the ones on cartridge run less than $20 each (you might need 4, one for each cart). OEM carts run about $100 each.

I am considering buying another one on this slick deal just to have another set of starter cartridges for $60!

I bought two CLP-315W printers (the previous model I guess) a few years back and I would recommend them to anyone. I gave one away to a friend when I moved, to save space in the moving truck, but it still had a lot of life left in it. If you visit the printer's IP address in your web browser, it will tell you how many pages you've printed along with how much toner is left. If those numbers are to be believed, you will get thousands of pages out of it before you need new cartridges. For $80 or less, buy two and sell/donate one when it needs new carts.

Besides, the whole reason I bought a laser printer is because my HP inkjet had cartridges that were set to expire, so if I didn't print very often, I might only get 10 pages out of $70 worth of inkjet cartridges. Now THAT was not a good value. Screw HP. :)

 :confused:WHY REPLACE TONER???

I'm shocked that there are sooooo many otherwise intelligent SDers here that are worried about toner. I got two of last year's model (315W) for $35 each. Both had FULL toner. After 3200+ pages, they are both still going strong without a single hiccup! (Of course, I don't print out enormous photos in "Best" setting either. Everyone should know that you don't buy a color laser for that!)

Would you rather buy a printer that uses ink and spend hundreds of dollars replacing "cheap" ink after every 50-200 prints? :shake:

I see it this way:

Buy the printer. (Hell, buy 2 or 3!)
Print away to your heart's content forever with ZERO worries about ink cost or dying.
Trade this in on the next deal and get $50 towards your next printer.
TOTAL COST = $5.

Seems simple enough to me!

Edit: After I get two of these, I will HAVE GOTTEN PAID $30 to print for one year. :D

Where did you get them for $35 each? I thought I already scored an epic deal getting it for $40 at Staples open box (late 2010).

Would buy another one. My favorite laser.

I just printed out the test page and I have about 55-60% remaining on my original toner and their page count is 973.

I use it liberally when I need things printed in color, but otherwise I have an ML-2510 which I bought back in 2009 from NewEgg for like $40. I have since had to replace the toner once (just within the past 2 weeks actually) for $20 and I'm good for another 3000 pages.

I also have two HP inkjets which keep drying the ink out and bitching at me that yellow, or magenta or some other stupid color is out when I have barely printed 100 pages with it. I only really use them for the scanner.

I still would never trade in my Samsung lasers..they do not bitch or complain and just keep chugging along..unlike the the farking HPs that have paper jams or out of ink every 5 minutes.

First off, be warned that when using this printer in wireless mode, it kicks into a sleep mode that it won't wake from to print unless you turn it off/on. If you get it, use a wired network connection (if it supports it, I can't recall at the moment), or connect it directly to a computer.

Second, toner is irrelevant - when you get low, just buy the next color laser deal for half the price of the toner :)

I saw this today morning before it hit SD. After the initial toner is done for, it will end up in the garbage as the replacement cartridge is so expensive. It is on sale for a reason.

1) do you know if this is an intentional design or a bug that may be fixed with firmware/driver updates?

2) like it was said above, it comes with starter toner, so the page count is much less than a full toner. Looks like 400 pages before it's dead. Looks like the full toner is 1500 pages and a full set is $227, making it just as expensive to by one of these every time.

I'm confused though...it seems like some SDers are getting full toners with this model?

Is this specific to the 325W? I have absolutely no issues with wireless on the 315W. It goes to sleep and wakes when it receives a print job.

In for one for $59.73 after coupon. I am sort of tired of making one new account after another, lol.

I had the predecessor to this printer (CLP-300) when i was in grad school, and it came with the same starter toner. I printed hundreds of handouts with tons of color (icons, photos, etc) for a whole year while student teaching, and i had at least half the toner before I gave the printer away. It is heavy and you cant stack much on it, so it had to go :(

It was otherwise a total beast. Not a single hiccup.

But I am curious for those of you who run out of toner any earlier than that...are you just printing 8.5x11 wallpaper tiles in yellow, cyan, and magenta???

last year I got CLP-310. after I run out of toner, I just trashed the unit. It was good for 6 or 7 month.

In general, Laser printer is less expensive to run than ink jet. Some laser printer worth to get new toners (or just refill) but CLP-310 was just ok in quality and I didn't want to get new toners.

I am questioning about this deal. Should I buy this for 6 mo use?

I'm surprised so many otherwise intelligent SD'ers don't read the spec.

You're comparing it to another model. This model specifically states:

What's in the Box?
CLP-325W Color Laser Printer

So is this to be believed? Is it the same steal of a deal if you get a measly 400 pages or so?

Yeah can someone confirm? Because what spyderdeals is saying is, thousands of pages

however others report couple hundred?

If couple hundred, this printer is SO not worth it.

1) do you know if this is an intentional design or a bug that may be fixed with firmware/driver updates?
It's absolutely a bug, but I don't know if they even care

Is this specific to the 325W? I have absolutely no issues with wireless on the 315W. It goes to sleep and wakes when it receives a print job.
Yah it's just the 325W, I bought one on a previous deal and the constant not waking drove me nuts - I ended up pawning it off on my sister when I bought a samsung all-in-one color laser on a later deal.

How do you know it's only a few hundred pages? I'm still on the starter toner of my 315W and have printed close to 1000 with about 55% remaining according to the status report.

I don't know, and apparently no one else does. It's purely conjecture, just as much as spydersdeals69 is based on conjecture. He's comparing a different model, and a different year. But these things change (did last year’s model also state “starter toner”?), esp. as manufacturers get wise to this sort of customer behavior. spydersdeals69 made his statements as if it’s a fact we'll see 3200 pages. Maybe, maybe not. Again, we're all guessing until someone, anyone, who owns one can confirm it.

Yeah I'd be hard pressed to say 3200 pages on starter toner..but looking at my usage, I think 2000 would be a plausible estimate.

Here's some hard numbers though from the TigerDirect.

1000 pages B&W
700 color.

I got one two years ago from Fry's for $119, then a few months later another for $89 to get the cartridges. They were about $130 for the set of 4 with small(not starter) loads. I sold the old 315-w with half full starter cartridges for about $50. Even though this has starter loads, it's a good deal!

FWIW: My 315 does VERY good color prints on plain paper, a plus. But for high quality home printing, nothing beats even a mediocre quality inkjet with nice photo paper. I even tried HP Photo Laser paper, my $20 PH1050 inkjet prints better!

Is it a staples policy to give you $50 towards the purchase of a printer if you trade in an old one? any restrictions?

ape
11-24-2011, 04:01 PM
Is there cheap replacement toner for this? If not, the final cost of using this could be expensive. Based on that review, print 400 pages and may need to replace 4 toners which OEM cost like $220+

you cannot refill these toner carts & there is a chip that automatically shuts down the cartridges after 1000 prints, regardless of what you printed and whether the toner is still full & the firmware disables the printer after 10,000 pages for drum replacement

I have the CLP-315w and use it daily for multiple pages of coupons. There is a chip that allows for refilling the cartridges. Very important: The chip must be installed before the original cartridges are empty. Printer locks up at that point. Chip can be bought on ebay for a reasonable price. You can disassemble the printer (youtube, not difficult) and solder it in yourself (not for the faint of heart, thought I bricked mine on two out of three tries) or the chip supplier will do it for you. I have bought one refill kit ($50-60) in two years. I still have some of that left... Note: I am too frugal at heart, I did not empty out the remaining toner from my cartridges and added the refill toner in lesser amounts than was recommended. Colors are crisp and bright to date. Text and bar codes are clear and sharp.
Purchased the chip from http://www.tonertrust.com.
The only Con I find with this printer is the fact the wireless connection drops at times.

FACT: I DO have over 3200 pages printed.

FACT: Number of pages will vary, depending on what you're printing. I DID NOT state that everyone would net 3200 pages. I DID specify that I don't go willy-nilly printing off 8X10 photos in "Best" quality, since that's NOT what color lasers are for. Anyone that buys one for that purpose is a fool.

FACT: If one buys a regular inkjet printer and proceeds to print off said 8X10 photos in said "Best" quality, they can expect to spend 10-20 times the amount of this printer on "cheap" ink. Savings? I think not. Avoiding the headaches of 3rd party ink and the inconvenience of constantly running out of ink is priceless.

FACT: You do not own this printer, nor do you own one remotely similar. It appears you are spreading FUD for some strange reason; pandering to base fears and guessing at unknowns without any semblance of truth in your posts is beyond silly.

FACT: Regardless of how many pages one actually gets, this printer costs $5 to use.*

*FACT: For those that asked: Staples, Office Depot, and Office Max have a $50 "trade-in event" about every other month.

I'm raising basic and reasonable questions to determine how much a deal, if any, this is. As I said, you keep comparing your experience w/ another laser printer to this one. Given that, and based on the fact it comes w/ a “starter toner”, is it not reasonable to call into question your assumptions? Are we just to roll over and not question anything?

As far as the 3200 pages, I assume that if ppl followed your reasonable usage patterns, they could expect similar results. Obviously someone who is UNreasonable would never achieve those results. To suggest that my concern about the actual pages available from the starter toner included those unreasonable few is disingenuous.

As far as the $50 trade-in, you mean something like this current promotion?

http://www.staples.com/sbd/cre/products/110109/merch9862/index.html?cm_sp=marketing-_-subnav-_-HP%20Printer%20TITU&icid=HP:HP:SUBNAV:HP_PRI:NULL:20101116:3

So I have to purchase another laser printer at full price, and in this case, $199 or above, and I get $50 credit? That's a deal maker? (or should I not question this either)

mikejones
11-24-2011, 07:10 PM

You're comparing it to another model. This model specifically states:

What's in the Box?
CLP-325W Color Laser Printer
Starter Toner Cartridge
Crossover cable
Setup guide
User manual on CD

So is this to be believed? Is it the same steal of a deal if you get a measly 400 pages or so?
Where are you getting 400 pages from? The CLP-315W that everyone (including myself) are comparing it to also came with starter cartridges but its description (http://www.adorama.com/SSGCLP315W.html?utm_term=Other&utm_medium=Shopping%20Site&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=gbase) says "ships with 1,000 pages starter toner cartridge" and I got waaaay more out of mine printing mostly text. A great price. Let me ask you a question --- what is the condition of the printer (i.e., exterior ware and tear, interior ware and tear, toner condition, and condition of the rollers and image drum). Is it new, used, or refurbished.
