View Full Version : Drinking for taste progression?
Those of you having developed, sensitive to tastes, highly profiled palettes -
With alcohol (wine, bourbon, etc), how did you progress in your tasting - low alc content to high straight up , soften the harder drinks, etc? Got this one I'm tasting ($10 wine - supposedly decently rated) and it's not awful ... reminds me of that barrely taste from a whiskey.

Liquor - Just start drinking higher quality alcohol, it's what I did. I don't really drink many mixed drinks. Rum, Whisky, Rye, and Scotch I usually drink neat. Used to use ice, but felt it diluted the flavor too much. I think in this area, some of it starts with manning up a little bit. I actually like the feel of the alcohol burn myself.. It's all about getting to know what you like and what you don't.
Beer - Check out some beer forums. Get away from the major beer brands and try some of your local craft brewers and what they have to offer. You'll eventually to get to know what styles you enjoy and which ones you don't like, then go from there.
Wine - Can't help you here. I don't know anything about wine. My sister is a big wine drinker, I call her for wine recommendations when I need to know anything wine related.

I agree on trying the micro craft brews.
Lots of the breweries offer free tours with samples at the end. Fun and informative.
