Just curious what peoples thoughts are on lurkers on the site. (People who view forums but don't login or don't have a login) When ever I glance at the amount of people online there are usually about 5x the amount of guests then members. It does suck when say a dell coupon is posted or gmail account, and your asked to post when used and they often aren't... Perhaps the ability to hide threads from those not logged in easier? Like put it next to the preview?

An Admin would have to log in his/her CP.

But why would they do that??No harm is being done.

I saw this one one forum... Make all the threads visible to guests, but require them to register to actually view them.

I don't see any harm in posting an available deal for guest users to view in the forums (especially when they can be found on various sites as well), but say a one use only coupon is when I would like to use a feature to hide guest users from viewing my post. Like I mentioned before say dell coupons that are being posted here. Often they are used without a person claiming use, or even thanking the poster! My thoughts are the majority of these users who don't claim use are those without a login. While it wouldn't keep everyone honest, I think a higher percentage would claim use if those only logged in were able to view it.

I completely support this idea. it may deter some people who don't like logging in to view a website, but those are the kind of people who would ruin deals or take one-time use coupons...

Nothing wrong with lurkers. It gives visitors a chance to check things out and get a feel for the site and see that it is worth signing up for. I for one do not like having to register to use a site if I don't have to, but SD was one site I wanted to sign up for. I did lurk for about 2 months before I signed up and still often when just viewing the site I don't log in unless I want to make a post.
I do agree that in the instance of something like a one use only coupon it is only common courtesy to thank or at least acknowledge use.

I say, give poster the ability to hide a post from Guest.

Like Free magazines. I would rather see SD registered user get first crack at it.

Guest see enough at the SD Home site. If they want to see more, they encourage to register. It would be nice for some participate from registered lurkers.

I agree. were'nt we all lurkers at one point, before we realized we would want to join the community ? If I remember correctly, guests can post without a logon a while back.

I believe Guests can only post in the Slickdeals forum, not any of the other forums.

Guests are just that..guests. Dont you think we should treat them as such and not be bothered by them?

Would you let someone walk into your house when he wants to, open up your fridge eat what he wants, spend the night, leave in the morning without so much as a thank you?

I like the idea of keeping certain threads unseen. :worship:

I have to wonder...why anyone would post a one time use coupon. If there's so much concern about someone using it without posting, wouldn't it be better to have a rule where you tell people to post that they have a coupon and to PM for the coupon code?

Lurkers help support this site, just like registered users do. We wouldn't have the number of affiliates or deals if not for the traffic that this site pulls in.

I understand about the one time use coupons, free mags and stuff, but I lurk even though I'm (now) registered. I check SD several times a day and just keep an open window in IE. I am at work the entire time (no comments about using office equipment for personal use, I've gotten some great deals on office supplies that have impressed the boss). I have been timed out of my log-in session because I do this. I don't realize I'm lurking until I try to post something and realize I have to log in again.

I was a lurker before I decided to spout off about something. It's a turn off for me to be hit up for registration info the first time you visit. SlickDeals benefits from having a lot of users. If you change it people may just go somewhere else, SlickDeals could wither away.

Executive Summary: Bad idea

I agree, I might only have a few posts but I think it would be nice if only SD members have access to the boards. Would be nice to get at some deals before they get raped.

I love how most of the ppl who want others to not be allowed have only been members for a few months at best. Let anyone, anytime view all threads.

I was a lurker for a little bit, and am still a newbie....had I been blocked from seeing some of the threads or deals I probably wouldn't have registered. I haven't been able to contribute much yet, but it's not from lack of trying....I seem to be on a lot of the same mailing lists as the others and when I look to see if somethings been posted that I have received or stumbled on, it's usually already here...and I know dupe posts are a big no-no! I dunno, maybe letting them see the threads but having the links dead to the lurkers might satisfy those who oppose them having total access? <shrugs>

I have to agree I mean let them view the lobby then if they want to visit the free stuff and free magazines they have to sign up so they wont kill the deal or go wild then when somebody thats a part of these fourms and wants to get in on it the deal is dead. I am not trying to tell you how to run this kick a** website I am just saying.

And what exactly is the difference between a registered user and a guest? How do you and I benefit from the fact that Bob finally decided to sign up? Other than that guests can't post deals...

Now that I've been here for a little bit....there are times when I like to go stealth....I used to go stealth on aol all the time.....sometimes you can't log in...or....if you're in a pissy mood, going stealth probably saves you from posting something you may regret later...the one time coupon thing...I agree...if you have one,..,post that you have it and request a PM for the code...simple solution..,...

Makes sense to me that more traffic through more lurkers equals a better SD. So I'm fine with the status quo - besides lurkers help support my paranoia.
