the s100 has a different sensor, gps, and a different, more navigatable button layout.

due to the floods in thailand, the production of those have dropped off. so i doubt you'll see a price drop on those for awhile.

S95 hasn't really dropped price until this Xmas so flooding or not it won't matter. We will have s100 sales next Xmas no matter what.

Also not sure how Thailand affects it since it is not made in Thailand.

S100 is retailing for 429 right now. S100 may arguably have an edge on the S95...BUT is it worth paying $200 more for? I personally don't think so. Grab it at this price now while you still can.

Right now for the camera and case with one-day shipping, I'm seeing a shipping charge of $31.91 and a free shipping offset of $21.92, which means I'm still paying about $10 for shipping.

Anyone else seeing this? Is this because free one-day shipping only applies to the camera and not the case?

If you have to ask then, no. Not to you it doesn't warrant a 40% price increase. You may never use the features that's in this thing. S95 can output raw files and it sounds like you won't utilize that either. Useful for those who do post processing.

RAW is nice but the the fast lens on a small point n shoot is probably the biggest draw for this camera, which can easily be noticed by a novice photographer. Way better pictures in low light situations and shallower depth of field.

Agreed. But my biggest concern is for many of those on this forum comparing the general point and shoots and the S95. Many of which will just shoot in AUTO mode anyways. Thus negating the potential of the S95. To those who know they shoot in AUTO mode 90% of the time, they are better off saving their money and finding deals for their desired cameras for $100 or so less.

I decided not to get the PSC-910 case so I could get the camera faster. Also, I can't tell for sure from the photos, but it doesn't seem to have a belt loop. Anybody know for sure?

Will other retailers price match this, like B&H? I hate paying tax on everything I buy from Amazon

Also, I don't need RAW images cuz I typically don't post-process them, but I like the options on this p&s anyway... and I cant find my old SD850IS :(

I ordered the sx300hs too but it's backordered right now anyway. I really want something to take with me to concerts. Is the s95 better? I know everyone says s95 is the best P&S but the 300hs has such a nice zoom.

S95 should definitely be better since it is takes way better pictures in low light situations because of its fast lens. 5x vs 3.8x is not a very big difference anyways. Concert photography is hard though, even with a good camera.

they ship separately, you wouldn't have to wait for both to ship

I didn't want to pay $10 for one-day shipping for the case, and the option to ship separately said there would be an additional charge. Also, the terms of the $5 discount state:

"To receive any of the discounts above, all qualifying Bonus items must be purchased and shipped together with the qualifying camera in the same order to a single address using the ***same ship option***." (my emphasis)

The PSC-910 case seems to be OOS now, BTW.

After some research, I think the case I want is the PSC-3200.

Well, I don't mean to be a downer, but consider past pricing--the s90, when it was replaced by the s95 (just one year ago) only made it to $300 discounted before they were cleared out nationally. Best Buy was the last place carrying them in the end, and only a few got them discounted further. It never hit this price on amazon. The same will happen to this s95. I was surprised when Adorama had it for $270--I'm absolutely shocked amazon has dropped it $40 more. This has to be a mistake of some kind. Good luck finding it this price again, new. You can't even get it this cheap through the Canon's refurb division with 15% off codes!

At worst if she doesn't want it, there is no way I can't resell it for less than $230.

Have to be careful with that mentality.

Amazon gold box sales have historically pretty much tanked the resale value of that item - recently: Triplefi 10 or X10 earphones, Panasonic LX5, and the Sony DSC-TX10

Aside from the hordes of people who will buy this just to resell, it's also usually an indication of a marketwide price drop on the item (though not at the levels that amazon is selling it for).

Considering this is an older model now (over a year old), I wouldn't be surprised to see price drops all around (again, obviously not as steep as we're seeing here, but a price drop nonetheless)

The s95 is one of the best examples of the 'enthusiast compact' level of camera. highly manual, increased picture quality, better low light performance. Actually the 500 HS uses a CMOS sensor much like the one found in the S100 now and it has an f/2.0 lens just like this one and the S100. The only thing the S95 has going for it is the additional manual control and a larger sensor, possibly better buttons and more intuitive focusing mechanism if those matter to you. Whereas the 500 HS has a touchscreen.

Folks there is no real need for a hard case if you're gonna stuff it down your pants pocket anyway, or your jacket pocket. Just use a microfiber cloth bag. You can get them for about a buck on ebay, just make sure the dimensions fit. The S95 is listed at 99x58x29 mm or roughly 4" x 2.3" x 1.14"

A 6" x 4" bag should do nicely.

4 + 1.14 = 5.14" needed for the long side, round up to 6"

2.3 + 1.14 = 3.44" needed for the wide side, but a little breathing room would be nice so 4"

Only because idiots instantly pour in to offload stock at whatever price they can get. If you're being smart about it, you don't jump on tech that wildly fluctuates (due to being in the market for short periods). Cameras don't tend to last more than 12 months before they're discontinued. Something like the triplefi 10's have staying power--they will sell at the same price for years. For the triplefis, with their yearly Amazon $100 sales, all you have to do is wait 6-9 months later--prices on amazon will bounce back up to around $200 each. That's a hefty sum if you buy in bulk and HAVE PATIENCE.

I completely agree with buying tech with staying power. But even so - did you see the resale value of TripleFi 10s BEFORE the amazon gold box a few years ago? It was easily in the $250+ range. It tanked to under $150 almost overnight. And has since stabilized in the $180 range and has never recovered to "pre goldbox" levels.

That brings us to this camera. Not only does it not have staying power, it's also a year old.... and has a successor already on the market. Anyhow, I'm pretty sure you were agreeing with me, but my point to the fellow I quoted was not to be so sure that he could recover what he paid on this on a used S95.

I considered that as my parents live in Oregon, but this being a Christmas gift and putting my parents out to go to the post office to reship so close to Christmas, not to mention cost of of a reship just isn't worth it. Otherwise good idea.

I'll chalk the $20 in tax as insurance considering Amazon is so "customer friendly"

Yup - it was $299 (or $289 with the NEWCUSTOMER10) at newegg last year for BF. I bought one as a present.

I was watching the prices before the latest sale--the price was over $200 again.

Successors don't always mean much, look at what happened to the value of the ZS7 after the successor ZS10 came out (which looked like an EXCELLENT upgrade on paper), it actually went OVER MSRP to get the ZS7 new. I really wanted the ZS7 and missed the few SDs on it before the ZS10 was out/really reviewed, and I am still grumpy about it :). I have seen the ZS7 new now for around $230 shipped (not sure if still available), while the ZS10 goes for $50 less than that. Not really relevant in this case since the S100 is decent, but look at its price and availability compared to this one vs. the moderate changes.

As far as staying power goes, that depends on your purpose. If you are flipping, this is an OK deal for local flipping, if you are FAST to post for those last minute xmas shoppers, you could probably net $40-$50 per assuming AZ is OOS by sunup (which surely it will...). THat is pretty good. Or in my case, this will probably give our family a good few years of use vs. dragging out the DSLR while still getting excellent photos.

I still need a pocket superzoom though, although instead of the Lumix I am waiting for the SX230 to hit a similar slick deal :).

DSLR(T3i in our case, not a pro model, maybe someday)=need excellent pics, no problem packing some gear, swapping lenses, being able to use a tripod and remote flash a bonus.
S95=need really good pics (outdoor and more importantly indoor/lowlight) w/o packing gear, and more "candid" pics, like at a party (where a DSLR seems to screw that up :)).
SX230=need decent pics and HD movies all in one package with excellent zoom where DSLRs cannot (or should not) go, like concerts, rough sporting events, etc.

To fill the S95 niche at $229 with $5 case and free overnight, helluva deal, lowest price ever by far. Even if you are flipping, if you post tonight, tomorrow AM on CL if you are in a decent sized city, you can make $80-$100 profit easy.

P.S. cannot believe that this is still live!

Been thinking about a new camera for a while. The reviews are great, purchased one but might send back or cancel if there is time.

I mainly use my camera at concerts / clubs to film video. I would like to take more photos, but my old cameras photos SUCKED at shows so I always stuck with video. So one thing I was really looking for in a new camera was a really good zoom. Comparing this to Canon PowerShot SX230HS.

So, can someone answer me... what's so GREAT about this camera. I have read reviews and I'm tired. Is this basically just really good for manual control for close-up photography and photography as a hobby. I like photography, used to do it in high school, but I really don't see myself ever finding the time to take up that hobby again.

Should I get another camera? I feel like I'm falling into the hype of everyone loving this camera and all the good things about it, when all those good things might be irrelevant to me?

Its the deal of the day. They may well let it last most of the day and take backorders on it. They've done it before. I was previously worried about it quickly selling out--after seeing it as the DotD, I'm less worried. I'm betting it'll still be available for hours.

Ohhh... missed that part. At this price, they will sell thousands I am willing to be, the S series is a legend, and yep market value will certainly go down. Not great for flippers, but think about what it does to all of those stores that stock these bad boys, and probably paid quite a bit more to have them on the shelves :/.

Regarding the other poster asking about this over the SX230, they are two different cameras. This one has much higher quality everything for better pics (manual focus ring on a pocket cam, sweet :)), the SX230 will still take great pics, and probably even better video from what I have read (check the inet for raw samples of both, youtube sucks for that given youtube compression,. even on 1080HD), but is not capable of producing output for "professional" use, due to output format options (no RAW), optics, sensor, etc., etc.

If you don't know the difference, and only plan on using the camera for fun (vs. semi-pro or very picky image quality use), I would recommend the SX230 HS. Excellent and very versital camera, and to be had a good deal cheaper than this one. The SX230 has a longer 35mm equivalent zoom lense than our most expensive 70-300 IS USM (only $450-AMazon discount of $250 on another SD :)), at 392!!, pretty awesome. Also, I have read the 1080 vids on the SX230 are pretty incredible for a P&S cam, rivaling camcorders of even a couple of years ago, that is a pretty huge achievement for a pocket cam!

It sounds like you predominantly want to use your camera to film video rather than photos? Then you may benefit from the sx230hs since it has 1080p capabilities whereas the s95 only does 720p. Also since you film concerts, you may also benefit from the sx230hs 14x zoom which has 28-392mm equivalent. You'll be able to zoom closer to the stage if you sit farther back. The s95 maxes out at 105mm zoom. There will be a sacrifice in image quality in photographs (not saying you'll get horrible pictures with the sx230) but sx230hs may be more fitting for your described usage. With the recent slickdeals of the sx230 you can save yourself $100 and still do what you want. Technology will always improve and go down in price. When you want to take up more serious photography again the S100 might be dropping to around this same price next year or even pick up a DSLR. :)

It's going to be horrible for flippers. In fact, they stand to make nothing on flipping. The new price before now was $300--it'll probably fall down to $250-$270, and after fees and shipping, they clear nothing. This is a good deal if you want the camera--nothing more.

I hate the Canon 70-300 IS (non-L). Compare it to a 70-200 (any of them) and it will make you weep.

In most cases I would agree, except for right now, on CL where fees aren't an issue. WIth these few days left to xmas, and assuming this isn't available much longer (EOD at the latest, and I am assuming with backorder for MANY), local flippers will do OK if they move FAST. Ever since Meg left eBay, it has turned to suckville for flipping.

I have the s95 and the video quality is great for both indoor and outdoor, however, it does not have continuous auto focus while recording video. Meaning, the focus is set when you start recording and does not refocus for that session. I still use the video recording and focus on something in between when I start the recording.

omg i just bought this camera from adorama for $269 from the fp deal. do you guys think i can cancel it before they ship it out (i would have to pay shipping fees to return the camera)

Call them ASAP to cancel.

If it's already shipped, read Adorama's policy very closely. They make you pay for shipping it back, PLUS they threaten you with restocking fees. I don't like that policy one bit. Please don't shoot the messenger, I'm just someone who has been in your shoes before regarding Adorama. Maybe if you call them and ask nicely they can help you out just this once though.

"Canceling an Order
You can cancel your order provided it hasn't yet entered the shipping process. If the item has entered the shipping process, it cannot be canceled. However, you can return the item for a refund. See Return policy.
Note: TV's or any other item shipped by truck can only be canceled prior to shipment. Once shipped and in route, the order cannot be canceled. If the delivery is refused, the shipping and handling charges for both ways will be deducted from the credit, and at our discretion a restocking fee might also be deducted."

Folks there is no real need for a hard case unless you really need it. Just use a microfiber cloth bag. You can get them for about a buck on ebay, just make sure the dimensions fit. The S95 is listed at 99x58x29 mm or roughly 4" x 2.3" x 1.14"

A 6" x 4" bag should do nicely:

4 + 1.14 = 5.14" needed for the long side, round up to 6"

2.3 + 1.14 = 3.44" needed for the wide side, but a little breathing room would be nice so 4"

wow great price on a great camera. it has limited zoom (3.8x) and you can't zoom in and out (optically) during video recording but takes great pictures even if you just use auto. low light is good too.

i bought this for $340 early this year. $230 is an absolute no brainer if you need a compact camera

The s100 does, and it allows you control over optical zoom as well (while recording). If you want to shoot video, you want the s100.

Or the SX230, which has much higher optical zoom, among other things when it comes to video recording. I think you could get the S95 and the SX230 for less $ combined than the S100 right now...

Buying the S series for video just seems weird to me :D.

Very good price for the S95.

I was originally planning to buy it at a price near this once the new model came out.

I changed my mind when I saw the specs on the new s100 though - it's leaps and bounds better so now I think I'll wait until that one drops in price!

The biggest upgrades, IMO:
- 24mm vs 28mm wide angle lens
- CMOS vs CCD
- 10fps vs 1.9fps !!!
- 5x optical zoom vs 3.8x
- 6400 ISO vs 3200 iso
- 1080p video vs 720p video

There are other upgrades as well, but they don't matter as much (12mp vs 10mp, an added GPS, etc).

It's not weird at all. I'd take the s100 over the sx230 for video any day. Faster lens, wider angle, digic 5 vs 4 makes a difference, and you've got an extra stop of high-ISO with the s100. The s100 also handles higher ISOs better than the sx230. I'm not sure if the sx230 actually allows continuous autofocus while recording (or optical zooming for that matter).

I'm not sure why you're under the impression that you need long-range zooming for video on a P&S. Most of the video I take is wide-angle.

Also bought the extra battery, but wiki says it won't charge with s95 charger. So how do I charge it? I can't seem to find original post.

Talked to rep and got the canon case for $5 after I ordered it without. Now they will ship together.

Specs on the S100 are much better, but I have similar specs on my Sony HX5 and many are useless, like the high FPS, the extremely grainy high iso, and the 1080p video - detail sucks, you just have high res, low detail. And 24mm on a P&S is usually a distorted mess.

I need a P&S with great video on it. I'm mostly going to be taking videos and photos will be largely secondary, is this the best I can get for the price?

$230ish is the going price for these used on eBay. Not the best deal, but pretty good still for a top notch camera. Would pick up another one if I didn't jump on the lx5 boat a couple weeks ago.

It's really not so bad at 24mm. 2%-3% distortion is actually pretty typical for wideangle zoom lenses even on a DSLR.

The s100 (and s95/s90 before it) has very good high-ISO, especially compared to the lesser ELPH models. I have no idea how it compares to the HX5, but don't assume it's bad.

2 great sites for comparing cameras (enjoy):

THanks for the comparison! Will save the S95 price until the s100 goes that low and then pounce. Wait. Wait. Wait.

I have the s95 and the video quality is great for both indoor and outdoor, however, it does not have continuous auto focus while recording video. Meaning, the focus is set when you start recording and does not refocus for that session. I still use the video recording and focus on something in between when I start the recording.
you can always install CHDK firmware on sd memory card to do manual focus and motorized zoom in video. Very useful!

CHDK firmware for s95 implementing Focus and Zoom in video mode: (for those who buy the s95, get this to make video mode usable.)

Ok, so I"ve picked up the Elph 300 HS and the Elph 500 HS. I'm trying to figure out why this camera is so much better? HELP!

Good points. In my case, most of my video's are done with my video camera, the $300 SD "Panasonic HDC-SD600K 3MOS 1080/60p High-Def Camcorder with 35mm Wide-Angle Lens and 18x Intelligent Zoom (Black)" I got a while back, will put videos taken with that against any DSLR or P&S. It is very small, and great EVERYTHING.

The only time I use P&S for video is when I am somewhere I don't want to bring my vid camera, like a concert or NFL game or something, where the optical zoom difference between SX230 and S100 is HUGE, and 2) the SX230, relatively speaking, is half the value or less if something bad were to happen (often at the concerts I go to :)), so more "disposable".

That is why I said using S series is weird to me for video... especially S100 considering its value vs. performance for video vs. an actual camcorder, but that is just me :).

Got one. I have been putting the lower price in amazon for them to price match. Amazon came thru.

As a happy owner of one S95, I can attest that this deal is sizzling.
