wow, great price.
loved this game.
def one of my favorite games of the year... yeah the graphics were lacking for the most part, and the 'story' cinematic parts were kind of lame. but damn the setting and the feeling you get playing the game were just great.
took me about 28hrs to beat it on the console, doing most of the side missions and running around exploring.

Warning: this game is still really buggy for a lot of people. It was gifted to me in the winter sale and can't run it with GTX 570 and a core i7 2500, 12 GB RAM..
Everyother game I own runs fine, but this one crashes my pc within the first 15 minutes. A lot of other people complain about the same issue. It seems the game runs the NVIDIA video cards to an insane amount of power and then it shuts down. I can run hours of heat tests and this game still crashes.

probably one of the best zombie games ever... but for those that have not played it, this is not really a shooter! Ammo is not easy to come by in the game, and it goes quickly when you do have it. this is machete wielding, hammer smashing, butcher knife slicing game! …and you need to keep those weapons sharp! lol
edit: and yes, this is a "buggy" game, unfortunately... it never crashed on my system, but there are plenty of other bugs in the game to deal with... but for $10 bucks, it's worth it.

Don't be so condescending, when in fact, you're the one in the wrong. Dead Island can be activated but not because it appears on that list. Just because a game is available for purchase through Steam does not mean that it can be activated on steam.
Dead Island IS available for purchase on Steam, as can be seen here (https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601).

being able to purchase at Steam store has nothing to do with activating the game on Steam when purchased elsewhere...
which is what the question was.
the Wiki link i posted tells you if the game is a SteamWorks game or not. if the game is SteamWorks, you can buy anywhere and activate it on your Steam account... if not, you can't and it must be purchased directly from the Steam store to be in your Steam account.

There's two problems I had (and still have) with your post. First - someone asked a legitimate question. Instead of giving him a legitimate answer (such as the link to the Steam help site on the topic) you acted like a smartass.
Furthermore, the Wikipedia page doesn't mention that Steamworks games activate on Steam, and in fact, they don't all, as they don't all come with Steamworks if you don't buy the game from Steam, which is the case here.
Suppose this thread was about Batman: Arkam City. Some goes to your smartass link, sees Batman is steamworks enabled, and then buys it expecting to activate on steam. It doesn't (per https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601)
Thus, your initial post was both rude and inaccurate. Good day sir.

Mine doesn't get crash either running my eVGA 460 GTX (Fermi) SSC, i7-950, Asus Rampage Gene III, 75GB WD Raptor, 8GB 1600 DDR3 Kingston, in an Antec 900 v2 case. In fact it runs great at max settings. I am running it through Steam so perhaps I have a patch that makes it run better on my older graphics card. This game is only roughly three months old, so I am sure there are bugs to work out for the many different PC configurations out.
As for the content, the trailers left a lot to be desired maybe even setting the expectation too high. I rented this on Gamefly and then couldn't pass it up on Amazon at the end of last year for $12 with activation on Steam. I was pleased to find that there is online co-op when playing through the campaign on the PC. For $10 if you enjoy zombie shooters like Left 4 Dead, this game is great for what it is and easily worth getting.

The lightning deal is for Xbox/PS3. The PC version (DVD) is already $25, which is the sale price for the 360/PS3 version.
Not sure if it will happen, but I've got too many goddamn games to pay $10 for this right now. Still haven't beaten Skyrim or Batman, and haven't even started Deus Ex or played much BF3. But for $5, it'd be tempting! ;)

Id say DI is a fair purchase at $5. I'm very happy I put up with it...er... played it without having to pay for it...and then gifted it to.someone when the rage inducing bugs drive me batty. Reportedly, some/most of the bugs have been fixed since I played it back in November. But, even still once the thrill of killing your first few zombies wears off, its a painfully average game.

Depends on what your looking for I guess, there was leveling and weapons crafting, a quest based structure, analog based combat controls. Compared to any other zombie apocalypse game ever, I would say the RPG element was pretty heavy in this one. No, it's not Baldur's Gate or even Skyrim, but it definitely added something to a game that could have just been another zombie shooter, which would have turned me off instantly.
Also, I put 50+ hours into the game easily and never had any game breaking issues on the PC personally.

Even if Amazon did match it, you wouldn't be able to use the coupon. Those coupons only work on the digital downloads. This is an actual retail boxed version of the game. Amazon would probably match the retail boxed version also, if Amazon price matches at all. I wish the digital download version on Amazon would go on sale though! I've been waiting for it also, to use my coupon. January is nearing its end. :(

It's an OK game at this price point. I personally felt it was pretty buggy and lacked proper development time. It feels like one of those games where a publish date was set and once that date hit the game shipped regardless if it still needed a lot of work. I lost interest in playing it not even half way through the game. The open world is nice, but when everywhere is pretty much the same with nothing interesting to do, whats the point?

retail activation is a feature of their SteamWorks API. the flaw is that games only have to have one or more of the features...
the reason you can activate retail keys bought elsewhere for games, is because it's a SteamWorks game.

that's your opinion... I've played L4D and I found it boring! DI is not just another "shooter", like L4D.
Objectively speaking, the ease of use (whether on Steam or Xbox Live), fun-factor, and "experience" of playing L4D with 4 other good players online was far from "just another shooter" when it hit the market in '08. The fact it is still going strong almost 4 yrs later would indicate your opinion is wrong.
While you are correct that it's just my opinion that L4D is a FAR better game and way more fun to play, at some point it stops becoming subjective and is much more an objective fact when you look at the preponderance of critical reviews and even user reviews on sites like Amazon and other gaming sites. The bottom line is there is a reason that L4D is widely hailed as an all-time classic gaming experience...and Dead Island, while attempting to do some nice things, is ultimately very average and will be forgotten within a year with little if any online presence.
I'm absolutely convinced Deep Silver released DI before it was ready and ultimately it is essentially a beta release for the inevitable 2nd version which will, hopefully, give us the game that was initially promised to us in this one when they were doing pre-release hype. If DI2 is what DI was promised to be, DI will disappear into obscurity in 5 seconds flat because DI is so flawed. In contrast, even with the release of L4D2, L4D still has just as strong of an online following.

In contrast, even with the release of L4D2, L4D still has just as strong of an online following.
you may be right about DI being released prematurely. It seems like there's something missing. I can understand about the respawning necessary to keep the gameplay alive but jeesh. There's this location in the market district where the frikkin zombies keep spawning and launching after you. I play logan and I lost a ton of weapons from throwing at the zombies and then having the weapons dissappearing into the ground or the bodies. Definitely bug ridden even now. I agree with many other users that this game had so much potential. I'm not sure how much it could be modded. If it used a moddable gaming engine the modders could really completed what IMO is an unfinished game.
Is it worth $10? Hmmmm. I've played ALOT worse games costing $30-40 more than this game so I'd have to say yes. At $5 it would have been a steal.
Is it better than L4D or L4D2? Both games do not accurately model firearms. Plus with L4D2 all the firearms are the same in terms of damage and handling. I like the melee weapons in L4D2 but they are not viable to go through an entire level with melee alone (probably my skill level). However, I really like the physics engine in DI for the melee weapons. On the other hand, the "director" program in L4D2 is nice because it adjusts to your playing skill on the fly. The boss fights at the end of each chapter are great. I would have to agree with you in terms of the 'fun" factor in multiplayer, I'd have to give the nod to L4D2. I really like singleplayer though in DI. The atmosphere is just great. It's creepy. I feel isolated and exposed. It's a relief when I finally get back to a safe zone.
One thing that is missing from both games is the "survival" element. Like being able to barricade yourself in. Worrying about provisions (food, medicine and ammo). Anyway, I'm getting off topic now but I just wanted to put my two cents in.
FYI - not sure if you folks have tried out fort zombie by kerberos productions but if you're into zombie games it is a MUST HAVE. The graphics aren't flashy but I'll ltell ya the game is so much fun to play. Plus the regular sale price is only $10! If you haven't tried it I strongly recommend you do if you like zombie games.

I think sometimes I'm a bit disappointed in what "could have been" with DI...and that tends to color my judgement of the game since it offers much less than what we were promised in the Dev interviews, pre-release trailer(s) hype, etc.... I think it's severely lacking as an open world, zombie RPG "epic" which we were lead to believe was the dev goal. The RPG elements are so "lite" as to be almost non-existent. As you noted, it doesn't create the "survival" aspect at all. And I wasn't expecting another unrealistic arcade-ish type of weapon system (a la Dead Rising), in which a tire iron will magically wear out or break after using it on a zombie a few times. However, I'd agree the single player has its moments that are very effective in terms of atmosphere and it can be fun for short stints if you accept what it is.
$60 launch price for this product is too high. I'd have been pissed had I payed full retail for it upon release. But for $10? I'd agree, it's a good deal. And for $5 it'd be a steal and worth buying for your friends on Steam or Xbox Live if only to fool around with MP a bit. I think it should have launched at a bargain price of something like $39.99, which frankly, would have been a kind way for the devs to say "this isn't what we promised you, so here's a discount".
Bottom line for me: while it feels unfinished as if they simply ran out of dev time/money and released it missing major components/aspects of the game (and containing more bugs than a wind-shield after a cross-country drive), it should give some creepy enjoyment for a few hours at the very least...and offers a nice preview of what we can hopefully expect from the sequel. Essentially, that's what this game is in my mind: a test product to iron out the wrinkles before they release the "real" Dead Island game. It's up to each individual to decide what it's worth to essentially be a beta tester.
EDIT: by the way, my price point rating system is something I utilize when I review games in general...and, for example, I apply this to Skyrim as well. As spectacular as that game is, it has major, major bugs (especially on the PS3)...and in my estimation, would be worth no more than $49.99 launch price to sort of ameliorate all the bugs and broken game-play. Personally, I wouldn't purchase even Skyrim until it's available in a GOTY edition with most/all of the bugs fixed + the DLC for, say, $40 or $50. That's just how I roll. :D So, I guess the point is...if you love Dead Island, don't take my criticisms personally or believe I reserve this type of critical eye for only DI and not other games. Skyrim is, IMHO, one of the 2 or 3 best games of 2011...perhaps deserving of GOTY if it had shipped bug-free...and even it isn't worth launch price to me for some of the same reasons that DI is disappointing.
I haven't heard of Fort Zombie, but I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip. :)
