you are correct, this model has the crippled gtx 560m
in a nutshell gtx 560m 2gm = 128 bits crippled
gtx 560m 1,5gb or 3gb = 192 bits
difference is noticeable
gtx 560m crippled < gtx 460m < gtx 560m uncrippled = radeon 5870m

Mine came with the 5400rpm drive. I put an SSD in for OS and move the 5400rpm drive into 2nd slot for everything else.
The older gen of sandforce controller SSDs (Vertex 2, Agility 2, etc) have problem with this laptop, not being detechable in Bios and such..
Go with non-sanforce controller or the newest gen (Vertex 3, Solid 3, Agility 3, etc)

got all excited when saw the Graphics card (GTX(not regular GT) and 2GB dedicated), however after reading about this being a castrated version of actuall GTX 560m i am on the fence now.
I have this(link-got it from there last Jan(2011) - deal on SD for around the same money as this(was supposed to have $100 rebate which i send too late(thx to my friend):) - works amazing not a single problem(sound is mind blowing- with subwoofer and lighting effects all over the body) in over a year of daily use) (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152204) Only disappointment with mine is that its only Sata3g so cant fully utilize the SSD which is Sata6G(even on Sata3G it smacks balls of my HDD(a new faster 7200 which i also upgraded)).
Since the purchase I added 120Gb SSD(Corsair Force Series3 Sata6g) to the second bay, upgraded to 10Gb of ram(4/4/2) and replaced the 500GB 7200 HDD it came with with faster Samsung HM500JJ - rest is unchanged.
Card in mine while only 1GB and Directx10 is fully 256Bit (http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-285M.23822.0.html) as opposed to this nuked 128Bit one. Also i dont mind that resolution on mine is not 1080p - prefer it actually, the screen is IPS(beautiful with 6ms response) and saves on battery as well as with the GFX card in it i am able to run ALL games at highest possible settings(except for DX11 naturally). I get 30-50FPS on Metro 2033 at native rez with all the bells and whistles(except for depth that ever1 turns off anyways).
This is the 1st serious lappy that might make me want to upgrade since then. Is it worth to upgrade from my current laptop to this in your opinion?

Finally a laptop with a decent video card. However, upon further inspection I discovered the following. These video cards are all about equal in performance:

Discrete: HD 3870 X2, HD 4850, HD 5750, HD 6750

This is actually a pretty poor "deal" despite prices on 560M lappy's having held high. The worse news is that the gimped 560's have helped keep prices on 460Ms just as high - bollocks!
Equal to desktop cards, right now is a shitty time to buy - Nvidia is trying to milk the final squeeze out of the current lineup, which is why prices are actually higher than they were a year ago. Unless you just HAFTA have a Republic of Gamers ginormo laptop RIGHT THIS SECOND, you really will be better off waiting a few months.

I was using one of these for the past week. The power brick is huge, the soft-touch surface for the wrists shows any oily mark from fingers. The thing weighs a ton and won't fit most laptop briefcases. It is a beast. Surprisingly, it did not boot quickly, though I didn't have time to remove all the crapware. It seems like it was designed to incorporate large exhaust fans, and that's it. Meh.

The thing weighs a ton and won't fit most laptop briefcases. It is a beast.Compare this laptop to the weight of other laptops with similar specs. This is a desktop replacement; it is not designed with portability in mind. Although, it fits in my Swiss backpack (designed for 17" laptops) just fine.
I have a G73, which I would assume is heavier than the G53, with its 17.3" screen, and honestly, you're over-exaggerating the weight. It's not something you'd carry to class every day, but it's easily portable to LAN parties, for travel, etc.

Some gamers like the portability of a 15" laptop and still having 1080p resolution. It's rare to find this combination in any laptop. If portability is not really an issue, then you should just save money and get a desktop with better specs and a 24" monitor for the same price :)

Specs on the GPU don't mean anything in this instance; you'll notice that people have pointed out ASUS chimped on the memory bus width and "crippled" the video card, but at least one review (second link below) points out it doesn't appear to have crippled the card overly much, at least in their testing. This is yet another case where a spec sheet and handwringing over certain product details aren't necessarily as impactful as people think.
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-G53SX-A1.62758.0.html
For some gamers, a 17.3 inch screen might just be too big. If that's the case, the ASUS Republic of Gamers G53SX-A1 is a 15.6 inch gaming laptop that features robust components that are typical of ROG systems. However, the video card has a slower memory bus and no Blu-ray drive compared to the larger ASUS G74SX.
http://www.bestgaminglaptop.net/reviews/asus-g53sx-review/
The ASUS Republic of Gamers G53SX is the sequel to the G53SW and very little (if anything) has changed compared to the previous model except for the GPU, which has been upgraded from an Nvidia GTX 460M to its replacement the GTX 560M. Although “upgraded” is a relative term here, since ASUS has opted for the version with 2GB of GDDR5 and a 128-bit memory bus instead of the 1.5GB or 3GB version with a 192-bit memory bus. The smaller memory bus width almost certainly has an impact on performance, but on the other hand the GTX 560M has been given higher clock speeds that will even out the differences.
By and large, it doesn’t look like the 128-bit GTX 560M is all that “crippled” after all, although exchanging half a GB of video RAM for the wider memory bus would probably have been preferable. 2GB or more video memory is still overkill for most if not all laptop graphics cards

I have one of the original G53s, and my friend has one of these newer ones. My power pin connector has broken off 3 times in a single year, after the first time it happened I was very careful not to bump or put pressure on my cord when it was plugged into my laptop (the plug is in a pretty inconvenient location), but it still broke 2 more times.
From what I saw when I looked at my friends, the part in the newer ones looks the same, so I'm not sure if they ever fixed this problem, but it's a pretty big deal, some people only get the issue covered under the accidental warranty, and I've had to go without my computer for over a month altogether from it being in the shop multiple times.
They may have fixed this flaw in the newer models, my friend has not had problems yet, but he has only had his laptop for a month. Just something to be wary of.
Here is a thread with many people experiencing the same problem with older G53 models.

ASUS seems to be afraid of putting a Bluray drive in their laptops.
I still can't believe I missed that deal 2 months ago for the 6790M laptop for 970. Now they releasing this crap for the same price. Sad sad!

Nice deal but really wish more companies would adopt the 16.3" screen as it is a nice balance under 17"

Can anyone tell me why there is a $180 price difference between this laptop and the ASUS N53SV-EH72 which was also on the front page? The hardware specs are very similar and from the looks of it, the N series features higher quality audio (Not that that is really a huge issue)
Asus ROG:
Intel Core i7-2630QM (2.0GHz with Turbo Boost)
8GB DDR3 1333MHz , 4 SODIMM Sockets, up to 16GB
750G 5400 RPM; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW
15.6-Inch Full HD (1920x1080) LED Display;Nvidia GTX 560M Graphics with 2GB GDDR5
Windows Home Premium 64-bit Operating System
Asus N series:
Model: ASUS N53SV-EH72
Display: 15.6" LED (1920x1080) Matte LED Display
CPU: Intel i7-2670QM Quad Core (2.2 - 3.1GHz)
Ram: 6GB DDR3 PC3-10600 1333MHz (16GB max, 4 slots)
Hard Disk: 500GB (7200RPM) HDD
Optical Disk: DVDRW
GPU: 1 GB Nvidia Geforce 540M
Other: HDMI, VGA, 1 x USB 3.0, 3 x USB 2.0, WiFi N, 2.0MP Webcam, Bluetooth, 6-cell battery
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
I mean aside from the 540M vs the 560M, what justifies $180? The N series processor is also faster...

That's it, the GPU. One is a midrange and the other is highend.

Smaller hard drive, less ram, slower ram, 6cell battery, 540M (quite a bit slower), less video ram, and I'd say probably not as good of a cooling system.. so quite a bit of a difference overall so that's how they justify price.

rather have that smaller higher rpm harddrive to be honest

How is the sound quality in the ROG? The n series is toting superb audio and by the sound of it (no pun intended) the audio is totally awesome??? Wouldn't that make up for some of the better features in the ROG?

It really depends on what is important to you and you have to remember that this is just one configuration.. I've seen multiple configurations with slight changes in video, audio, screen resolution, etc. The ROG is a gaming machine, but if it's anything compared to my G50, I would say the audio is pretty good. My G50 has Altec Lansing speakers and decent audio, albeit a bit on the low/quiet side, so I use external usb powered speakers to help and the audio sounds great so the audio chipset while not the highest quality, is still better than many integrated chipsets. I noticed that the "newer" model of this ROG has a similar audio system as my G50 so I'd say the one listed is probably comparable.
I saw a great deal on a similar laptop a couple months ago for around $700 I believe. I almost jumped on that one but decided to wait until the next gen cpus hit and prices drop on those.
I'm kind of surprised that even older systems have a much better video card in them than the newest generation (I'd like to get one of the 5870 systems as they seem to be faster than the newer 460/560M gtx cards that have been coming with the sandy bridge Asus laptops). Maybe we'll see a decent and reasonably priced 570/580 gtx card in an Asus or one of the newer ati 6800s, and maybe even the newest 7900 series card.. one can only guess.. or check the product line ups (lol there could be one already out now. I just don't have the time to look into it right now, which is probably good cause then I'd just want one).

I saw the deal and I thought it was very good my question is with this card 560m can you handle SC2 ultra settings everything high? Also with the new SC2 heart of the swarms would it be the same deal as previous or higher settings on the new one (improved graphics which would need a higher graphics card).

I just wanna say that this is by far the best laptop i've ever owned.
I bought the G53SW laptop from Frys w/ the non-gimped GTX460m card, 7200RPM HDD, and blu-ray drive for $899 + tax.
This laptop handles BF3 on medium settings w/ no heat problems, and stays cool even after 4-5 hours of intense gaming.
This laptop is highly recommended, even with the 128-bit GTX560m

i have the same laptop and it's pretty awesome. yeah, the gpu's the cripple version but it plays bf3 very nicely, so i'm happy.
Does this laptop come with the backpack? Thanks-

Wow. A little over two years ago I picked up an HP dv7t via slickdeals for about this price. It came with a bluray player (fairly useless feature for a laptop), a 230m, and was one of the first to have an i7. I've used it all of six hours since I bought it as it didn't perform as well as I had hoped. At the time its specs were considered awesome for the price. But compared to this....absolutely no contest. Not even close. I should have sold it immediately rather than simply neglecting and holding on to it.
Congrats to everyone who got in on this. Great laptop, great price.

If anyone who bought this laptop happens to see this thread now, you can get a $35 refund from amazon because it was supposed to come with a backpack and mouse. Just an FYI.
