View Full Version : WHATS YOUR OPINION? : Special forum for members with 1000+ posts / 100+ reps.
So I've recently requested some staples coupons in the coupon request forum, and I was thoroughly ignored. Seems that people would rather just post coupon codes in the actual thread letting leechers nab em, instead of PMing them to people who post requests.
Would it be possible to have a forum that is useable only by people who meet a certain criteria? I've been a member on three other forums where something similar to this was implemented, and it served its' purpose beautifully.
It would be nice to be able to request a coupon or a special deal in a private forum, where I don't have to compete with every Joe schmo who has more fingers and toes than posts. It's a small perk when you consider some of the stuff our bold members contrbute to this community.
I think it would be smart to limit the kinds of stuff that could be posted in this forum. For example, slickdeals / freebies / general coupons should not be posted here. That should stay public, or else it would defeat the purpose of this website.
This is just a rough idea, and it would certainly need to be tailored to meet needs and not step on any toes, but I'm sure it can be done. Furthermore, it gives people who do not have access to it something to work towards. And the harder the community works, the better SD becomes.
Seems simple, really :)

Eh. I don't like it.
Why should we seperate users like that? This is a community and being such we should work together and help each other out.

Yes, they will work via begging for reps and posting just to up their numbers so they can make it to the "exclusive" forum to beg for coupons. :P

As much as I would like a "bold" forum for codes, I'd have to side with Landers here.

That's just it...No one was willing to work with me and help me out.
The current system is flawed, I'm just looking for ways on improving it.
From the votes thus far I can see my argument is not convinving anyone.
Ce'st la vie.

Don't forget, Wood, that just because you're bold, doesn't mean others haven't posted deals and not been repped for them as well. We're all bold in our own little ways. :D

Good idea in some regards, but I have to side with Landers and the others....this is a community. Having a seperate forum defeats the purpose.........

this is a public forum....segregating bold users from others defeat the 'public' part of it.
as far as certain one-time use codes goes, you'd hope that users would pick another user and PM it to instead of posting publicly for a lurker to get.

:iagree: Exclusivity for any particular group usually breeds discontent among the rest of the members. I understand what you're trying to accomplish, but this is just something that happens in community forums, and most of us were lurkers for a while too.

This suggest has been brought up many, many times in the past. The answer is always the same: "Not gonna happen."

I agree with most of the users here that it would not be a good idea.
I have a question, what is more valued by SD? Reputation or Posts?
Seems that the level of experience is based on posts rather than reps. I have seen users that have a high level and appear to be an authority just because they have posted a lot, even though their reputation hasn't changed since they joined. Any thoughts on this?

I don't think it's either the reps or posts that are valued more, but the contributions the member has made. Many post in the lounge or podium forums where reps aren't given, while others post deals or freebies and are repped for helpful posts. Everyone contributes in their own way.

I think it's length of time as a member;)

What should be done is require members to log-in to see deals less than 24 hrs old. Maybe that would turn away some lurkers who are hoarding the deals.

well let's not forget rep inflation either... Now that some users have been around for 3 years, and most over 1, their rep points are weighted more heavily. As such, there are lots of bold people.
Additionally, a lot of loungers seem to have high rep counts even though it's the same 30 or so people who post the bulk of the deals.
I guess what I'm saying is, it's not a BAD idea--it just isn't going to happen. Besides, I've been around for a while, and I'm no more valuable now than I was when I had 100 posts and 10 reps. I always help when I can, but usually everyone else is helping me more.

I was a member of another forum that tried this and the site died down to like 25% of the traffic within a few weeks. Initially there will be a surge of mediocre deals in a desperate struggle to get enough rep points + lots and lots of spamming and within a couple weeks, people will get bored and leave. It really doesn't work as it should. I would suggest maybe offering other bonuses to the more experienced users.
