What happens if you forget to cash a rebate check. It was issued, but I forgot to cash it... Don't ask I was REALLY busy. Anyway, any ideas?

then you lose the rebate as far as i know. i just deposited a $40 rebate check from samsung that expired 18 months ago. it went through, but then i got a call from my bank saying it had been rejected by the other bank because the check was expired so they pulled the funds back out.

Wow! Me too...I'm gathering up lots of cash to wire them to pay taxes and "earnest money" - can't want to cash in and start living the sweet life!

(Thanks for the laugh)

Apparently I have funds in Nigeria and if I send them a check to help pay for transfer fees, they will give me millions... awesome deal.

Found $120, but also too many hoops to jump through. I'll probably never get it started.

I am not sure where to put this, but the Washington State Department of Revenue has a site to let people find out if they have any unclaimed properties. See below for unclaimed properties definition. Most of time, these are checks that companies have written out, but no one has cashed the checks. The companies are required to send letters to notify the payee. After a specific time frame, if the checks are still uncashed (unclaimed), the companies are required to submit the cash to the government. So now is your chance to see if you have any unclaimed properties you are unaware of. I am sure other states have this as well, but I only know the site for my own state.

http://www.claimyourcash.org/

Unclaimed property refers to property being held by an organization that has not had contact with the owner for an extended period of time. Property is usually considered unclaimed after three years, when it is turned over to the state of Washington. Banks, retailers, credit unions, utilities, corporations, insurance companies, and governmental entities are some of the many sources of unclaimed property.

The Department of Revenue is the custodian for unclaimed property, and it administers an unclaimed property program to seek the rightful owners.

Typical unclaimed property includes:
Bank accounts
Insurance proceeds
Stocks, bonds and mutual funds
Safe deposit box contents
Utility and phone company deposits
Uncashed checks, such as payroll, insurance payments, or travelers checks
Unclaimed property does not include real estate, vehicles, and most other physical property.

Unclaimed Property Law
(Chapter 63.29)

State law protects unclaimed property until it can be returned. There is no time limit for filing a claim and rightful owners or their heirs can claim property reported since 1955. The state may auction the content of safe deposit boxes, however, if not claimed within five years.

The State’s Role
The Department of Revenue administers an unclaimed property program as a free public service. More than $1 billion in unclaimed property has been turned over to the Department of Revenue since 1955. In fiscal year 2008, the Department’s Unclaimed Property Section received property worth more than $100 million. The amount continues to grow each year. All funds are received and administered through the Department's Unclaimed Property Program.

Guys did a search but did not find this.

California Controller office has a link that searches for money that might be yours and just has no address to send it to. Between myself ($60) and my wife (under her maiden name - $60) we found money that was from 1993. It states to send in the form plus proof of ID and within 30 days a check will get cut, just in time for the holidays. Good luck!!!

If you could have kept track of your money in the first place you wouldn't have to go through the trouble of finding it! :D

Ah.... Have you considered that other people also have the same name as your parents? If you don't recognize the address, it's probably someone else. Somehow I think claiming something that belongs to someone else from the government will end up coming back to bite you someday.

Since you must be well off, you might as well claim it and give it to charity.

I am confused about not wanting money though...

im going to ask them if this was their first home... >.>

and both their names were chinese, so it would be spectacularly rare to match up the first middle and last names of my parents....

Not at all. I'm Chinese and when I type in my parents names it lights up like a xmas tree. None of them are my parents though. I have never met anyone else with my dad's name for example. Yet down to the middle initial there are matches on that website for other people with the same name. A name that may seem rare if you live in Simi Valley is a dime a dozen in SF.

The dude that stole my identity is on the list. We have the same name down to the middle initial but at some point he started using my SSN to get credit. It seems like Karma if I claim the property he used my good credit to buy.

Thank you. I had a Harry & David gift certificate that I'd never used. I'd gotten it free from a Colgate promo many years ago. They sent me a letter saying I could have the money, since I'd never used it. Don't know why I didn't tend to it then, but eventually it got lost I contacted Harry & David many times and they were clueless about it In fact, just a couple of months ago they mailed me something about it (asking me to provide them with more information - duh I had no more information than I'd already given them). Well guess what was listed under my name? $100 from Harry & David! I thought I would have to go to their state to search for it, but it showed up under my own state.
