I was just talking about this with a co-worker two weeks ago..

Just Google your state like "Virginia Unclaimed Property" and goto the Treasury site. My Co-worker ended up getting $2500 back from some kind of insurance thing. Basically its just where a company can not find you after you move several times, and the state can not take your money so they just hold onto it until you contact them. Not a bad find at all.

I Have over 100 in LA to claim. It takes me to the LA web site. Then asks me to register over a "secure" connection. Which, is not secure.

Thats the Louisiana Department of the Treasury fault, but still.

Many states have websites that not only give you the ability to search online, but will provide online forms and guidance for making a claim for free. Any site that is not an official web site set up by the state you live in tries to take a percentage ranging as high as 50%. I thought all SD'ers were more resourcefu than thisl!!

What happens if the person is deceased?

If the name listed is a deceased relative or friend, only the rightful heir can claim this item. Please be advised that states require you to submit legal documents for verification; examples include a will, death certificate and others.

Want to find out celebrities' addresses? This is a good way to do it...
Search for Britney Spears...she's owed 100+ dollars from a casting company. On top of that, you get to see address, whether it's former or current who knows. I just thought it was kind of cool.

My state (Oregon) doesn't participate with this site, but does have their own unclaimed money search on their website. I decided to do a search there, and apparently I'm owed some money. :) No details about exactly what, except that it was from when I lived at my previous address, and the amount is over $50. Time to fill out the form and find out what I'm getting. Thanks to the OP for starting this thread! :)

What happens if the person is deceased?

You would need documentation that they are dead and that you are a heir (will, court order, etc).

Just by chance a couple of weeks ago I found that there was a 30 year old insurance policy that was in my father's name for my mother that we knew nothing about, so the state will soon be sending along a check for over $5000. If I hadn't be already auditing finances, I may not have known about it until viewing this thread (that uncollected debt was listed by this service). Too bad I don't also get the interest that this amount has probably accumulated over the years. Even at just 1% that would be over $1,700.

no...but here's a question. If he's never had Progressive Ins. maybe it's from a car accident settlement? but how would he owe them money if he's never had it?

My brother is owed money from when he worked at Petsmart and quit...instead of mailing his checks to him they just held them.

Just find the website for the Secretary of State or Treasurer for the state you live in by doing a web search. Many of them have links to databases of unclaimed property. I know Massachusetts and California have those links.

Don't forget to search for relatives who have passed away. I found $3,084.28 & $2,825.42 for Insurance policies on my grandmother who passed. $5909.70!

All I found for me was $57.94 from an old paycheck.

I did find $3,528.99 & $57.93 for my brother-in law in some old Credit union accounts....
Also found around $100 for my girlfriend. I think she owes me a dinner for that one......

I was actually coming over here to post about the Texas website, so I'm glad to see the slickdealers are on top of it already. It's definitely worth your time to look!

Tyler.Durden
06-13-2007, 01:06 AM
There's a Bob Smith that's owed at least $25 minimum in every state.

Whoa, that's even more strange: apparently I'm owed over $100 from the state of Florida, even though I've always lived on the west coast. And my name is extremely rare, only about 10-15 other people have my last name in America.

I'm not quite sure where to post this, so Moderators, feel free to move it if you need to. I already searched but didn't see this anywhere.

I found this site (missingmoney.com), that helps you find unclaimed money and property. Here's the link (http://www.missingmoney.com/Main/Index.cfm). I didn't find anything for myself, but I did find something for my mother from 15 years ago.

Here's some text from the site:

Benefits
* Officially endorsed by NAUPA and the participating states.
* Searches are free of charge.
* Data is refreshed monthly.
* A single, easy to use website to search nationally for your missing money.

MissingMoney.com is a database of state unclaimed property records. The states safeguard your money and return your lost funds. Common types of unclaimed property include:

* Bank accounts and safe deposit box contents
* Stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and dividends
* Uncashed checks and wages
* Insurance policies, CD's, trust funds
* Utility deposits, escrow accounts

Unclaimed property does not include real estate property.

Hummus and pita can be an equal substitute for anythign...Makin pancakes and ran out of eggs?....just use some hummus and pita....Putting together your wall mount for your flat screen and cant find a screwdriver?....hummus and pita will do the trick.

In closing...the man just printed out a form from this and now has to send it into some state agency...he said the site does ask for your SS# but it is def legit.

If you go on the NJ state treasury site it actually links to this site to find your money. I wouldnt worry about it.

Found a nice chunk of money for my mom on it last year. If you're not comfy with the site, follow the thread to where it says your money is hiding and go there directly. It usually takes you to a site run by a state. And if you're still not comfortable, send some snail mail to the state.

The site I check every so often is www.unclaimed.org but I see now that they and the "missingmoney" site are affiated.

About two years ago I did a search, and found my sister's name on there. She was first denied the claim (after sending in the paperwork) but continued to pursue it. Long story short, she had a few thousand from a retirement account from a previous job.

Make sure you check every state you have either lived or worked in, and for the ladies, check your maiden name too. This is legit, so don't worry about giving your info...

It is definitely legit, the states have do this to get money back to people and after so many years teh states reclaim the money as undelliverable funds so you lose out if you don't go claim them. It is often the result of mail being returned back to them as undeliverable as addressed. Did you move? Sometimes you don't even know you have inclaimed money till you see these sites. My aunt had money after I informed her her name was on the NY list. She offered to send me a % but never did!!!!:shake:

Q. Why do some of the property items only have limited information displayed (no dollar amount, no street address)?
A. By law many States cannot reveal the dollar amount of the property they hold, nor can they reveal the last known street address. Some States also withhold such information to prevent fraud.

About NAUPA

About the Association

The National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) is a non-profit organization affiliated with the National Association of State Treasurers. Members represent all states and the District of Columbia. Each year NAUPA holds several meetings and seminars to provide professional education opportunities for state unclaimed property policymakers, administrators, auditors, and holders.

NAUPA provides a basic forum for continuing discussions on interstate cooperation, education, training, uniform laws, reporting requirements and increasing the public awareness of the role the states play in protecting their property. In addition to coordinating Association seminars and conferences, NAUPA publishes a quarterly newsletter and Quick Reference Handbook, which is available to its members and the public.

Mission

The mission of NAUPA is to promote and support excellence and professionalism among those individuals charged with the responsibilities of unclaimed property administration and compliance.

Goals

* NAUPA will work diligently through its membership, Executive Committee and staff to increase unclaimed property awareness through educational seminars, media outreach and legislative activities.

* NAUPA will promote and assist in compliance efforts, while at the same time, reuniting owners with their property.

* In these efforts, NAUPA and its members will work diligently to promote uniformity among states whenever possible.
Role of the States

All states make a diligent effort to locate the missing owners and reunite them with their lost assets. With a few exceptions, there is no cost to the owner. The states use publications such as newspapers, inserts, and mailings to notify owners of their property and how to claim it. Other outreach methods include booths at state fairs and shopping malls, legislative contacts, cross-referencing state license information, and the Internet to name a few.

History of Unclaimed Property

The origin of unclaimed property law dates back to British common law. Abandoned land was returned to the king along with the transfer of the property rights. Today, this concept has been adopted by the states and applied to intangible property as well as tangible property, excluding real estate. The states do not take permanent title to the property but act as custodians to safeguard it for the rightful owner or their heir until claimed. In nearly every state, there is no time limitation for filing a claim.

I'm not sure if this has been posted...I usually check here everyday and haven't seen anything so far, but I might be wrong. Please delete if it is a repost.

My aunt sent me this link to a website that allows people to claim money that may be theirs.

"What is unclaimed property?

Unclaimed property (sometimes referred to as abandoned) refers to accounts in financial institutions and companies that have had no activity generated or contact with the owner for one year or a longer period. Common forms of unclaimed property include savings or checking accounts, stocks, uncashed dividends or payroll checks, refunds, traveler's checks, trust distributions, unredeemed money orders or gift certificates (in some states), insurance payments or refunds and life insurance policies, annuities, certificates of deposit, customer overpayments, utility security deposits, mineral royalty payments, and contents of safe deposit boxes."

I personally didn't find anything for myself, but my aunt got $20 for herself, and found $500 that was owed to her son from a previous employer.

Check these two sites:

Part of my job actually is to research my company's uncashed checks to vendors and employees, and if they're not claimed, I then send the money to the state and that's where people can look. I've also looked for my parents and friends and found some money.

One thing I will say is if you ever see an ad from a company offering to find you unclaimed money at a cost, don't do it! States are legally required to post all of their unclaimed property for free, so always go directly to the state!

Also, if you ever see a letter from a company indicating you haven't cashed a check, do not ignore it. It's much easier when I have one of our checks reissued than the payee going to the state. I can't tell you how many people ignore my letters! :shake:

don't checks normally "expire" after 90 days?

Sure there's always "void after 90 days" but on the payer's side, it's still uncashed so we are legally required to research it. If the payee comes back and says it's still owed, even after 2 years (which I've experienced many times), then I have to void and reissue the check. Most states require companies to "escheat" uncashed checks to them after 3-5 years, so until then I try my best to send the check to the right owner

You should try to claim it if it was your street and the same name. It probably didn't get to you because of the wrong house number.

Checks never expire. As long as the account is still open, the check is valid, Even if it says otherwise.

Repost http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=0&t=414429This post has about 30 different places to locate lost or unclaimed money.

Another good reason to do this sooner than later. In this situation, one must provide a will or trust and proof for each person who should inherit this money. Very time consuming.

Don't just check your immediate family members, check your deceased grandparents, uncles etc. Find out if they were partners in any companies and search those company names as well. Oil & Gas companies have been dump funds into unclaimed properties. You never know what you might find and depending on the probate laws etc., you might be entitled to some of the $$$$. I know of a situation where a state is listing unclaimed mineral royalty payments for recent production to individuals who purchased royalty/mineral interests in the 1930's!! Do some digging.

You had batter check your facts. My post is correct.

Besides, most of the time a check will, go through without even a signature.

It is ill advised to attempt to cash old checks *unless you know the account is still open), especially ones for rebates, as the rebate processors close accounts to prevent you from cashing the checks.

Right, I actually mentioned the word escheat in my next post. And it's done with any checks. Personally, I've escheated many vendor and payroll checks.

I will second or third whoever said looking up deceased family members because I've escheated several "The Estate of XXX" checks.

I had to actually request and receive the claim form before I found out what the values were. I think this is to stop scammers from just picking all the high dollar ones to attempt scams on.
