I got 2 pairs from Zenni and had no problems. Delivery was longer than most because of my astigmatism, but still at right about what they quote (with the +1 week for heavy prescrip). I did get one pair of photochromatics which are nice, but it is disappointing they don't darken in the car when driving as the majority of UV light is filtered by the auto window glass.

This is an amazing deal. If I could read the screen I still wouldn't believe it.

:iagree:
I gambled on getting AR for free on the second pair I ordered, and it did NOT come with AR coating. My wife and son both noticed the difference in the glare from the cheaper pair immediately.
The first pair I ordered I went with deluxe no line bifocal, transition, the bendable titanium frames and antireflective coating. Total shipped about $85. Shipping took 2 weeks and 1 day from order (over Easter time).
The second pair, I went with the $9.95, single vision, no AR coating, no bifocal, etc.. and got them for ~ $15 shipped. They actually fit nicer! I just wish I bought the AR coating and maybe went with a 10% tint. Since they weren't bifocal (easier to make, I suppose), I got them in just over a week.
Also kinda wish I went with smaller lenses on second pair, I noticed close up reading (ordered them with no bifocal in this pair) is blurry looking thru the lenses, but if I look beneath the lenses, I don't seem to need bifocal for reading. (My reading strength in current script is +2.00 in both eyes). Without glasses, I can see the computer screen fine, or read fine print from about 16" away. With the non bifocal pair on, I need to be about 26" from the screen.
BTW - the $9.95 frames/lenses (#3124) are nearly identical to the (#9146) bendable titanium frames except for a maybe 2mm wider nose bridge, 35mm vs 32 mm lense height and the $9.95 frames say "jingpin" on the temple arm (which is not noticable in the picture on their webpage).
Overall, I'm very satisfied with Zenni Optical, the precriptions seem to be 100% correct, the frames compare to the cheaper ones I saw at Costco and Walmart and cost about 1/2 to 1/3 as much respectively and probably about 1/4 or less as much as Lenscrafters (the only ones who could make them the same day).
This was funny too... I got the exam at Walmart since it was right across the street from work. Exam was $55 normally, they asked me if I had vision insurance, I said no, but they called UHC anyway and told me I had a discount and only had to pay a $40 copay. Cool I thought... Then I checked my benefits website a few days ago and it says eye exam 100% covered. I guess in this case it's worth $40 to call then and find out. It didn't make any sense that I'd have a copay, it's a high deductible indemnity plan. If anything the should have paid $0 til I met the out of pocket! Could backfire on me and they ask for their $15 back!
Most insurance negotiates discounts and it sounds like you got the discount. The $40 was probably the remaining balance that went towards the deductible.

I just received the 5 pair I ordered (total 66.15) and all 5 are right, with a pretty severe astigmatism. I even made an error on my online order, called the next day, and after about a 10 minute hold, connected to a live person that calmly corrected the order. I received them in about 10 days.
One thing I notice right away is how dark the 80% tint is. I have had several pair of prescription glasses, and they have never been able to get them dark enough for me, but these are plenty dark, and wonderful! Thanks!

I agree about the dark tint, I am the same way,I like a black tint. I just received my first order today from ZENNI.Actually it was my first time ordering eyeglasses on line and I am amazed at the price the service the shipping everything.I was not real optimistic thinking you get what you pay for.... but my RX had expired and I knew my RX so I decided I had nothing to lose at these prices. I am quite happy. No lie, 4 pair of glasses, one being sunglasses and my total was 43.95 shipped!!!!
By the way ,the PD thing is really no big deal, just have someone in your house measure with a standard ruler with the mm side, from the center of one pupil to center of the next and with 60 being about the average you should know if you got it right.I had my daughter measure my PD and they seem fine.
For my shades I found a cute pair of black frames and just chose the darkest tint, which said gray 80%.I was thinking that doesn't sound very dark but went with it since it was the darkest and the glasses are very dark, and look like black on black. I think it would have been 8.00 for the glasses and 4.95 for tint.
I ordered 2 pair of wire frame, one is the half rim wire and they really look cute I have never had any like that. The othrs were a full rim in a pale pink, they are really cute also. One other pair not too crazy about but they are fine for a spare pair. All in all I highly recommend them.I received in 13 days I believe it was. They are all in hard cases with a cleaning cloth. They were in a USPS Priority envelope.Really no complaints for the money. If you are like me and just don't feel like going to the Dr. for a RX every single year then I would give it a try.I have heard most RXs don't have the PD on them .but as I said really no big deal, you could even measure it yourself in the mirro if you didn't have anyone else to measure it for you.
I may try another place in the future but not sure if there are any others out there with this low of prices! Thanks all!
I got my order from zenni recently as well. Took just under 2 weeks for a pair of 80% tinted sunglasses. I used my old glasses to get an idea of frame width and had my girlfriend measure my PD.
I couldn't be happer with my pair of $18 (shipped) prescription sunglasses. Same thing locally would've cost me $150+!
My only comment is that next time I might spring for the AR coating on the sunglasses.

Doese anyone else have a problem getting a response from Zenni? I sent the following email and am still waiting. The pd seems different on each eye which I guess is no big deal? Also I am not sure how the other figures jive with zenni's website. My prescription is from cohen which has a deal in NY for $20, but they did sucker me into spending way too much. Would like to know how to order from Zenni for backup pair though.
Thanks,

I just got my prescription and am confused how their numbers translate to your website. Here is my info:
OD +0.75
OS +0.25
Axis add +3.00 Prism add +3.00
PD 73/70
After measuring my eyes with a plastic ruler for the above pd, the salesmen put a light box type device to my eyes and flashed a light and got the following according to him "more accurate" mono pd- whatever that means. The two measure ments from mono pd and regular pd seem totally different. I dont get it.
Mono Pd R 32.5
L 33.5
I would like to know how to order plain reading and also how to order progressives.
Please show me how this would translate into ordering a pair from you, or do I need more information.
Thanks

Your PD is the sum of the R & L. If the numbers are really far apart (like one eye is 22 and the other is 35 or something), then I'd type into the comments section, just what you wrote: R 32.5 L 33.5 You may want to do it just because you have it. But in the box where it asks for your PD select 66 (32.5 + 33.5). The Zenni website says that 62 is average, but not to assume that everyone is a "62" so yours sounds close. It also says that your PD doesn't change with age (except probably for kids) and that it's supposed to be part of your prescription, so I don't get why a dr's office would refuse it if they have but I guess that's neither here nor there, right?
I'd call them. I emailed them to see if they could give me any info on when my order would arrive (I'm impatient) and never got an email back.

I ordered 3 pairs on March 26th and recieved them yesterday.this my first online prescription glass purchase and I was a little worried but after just having paid $200 for a pair for dd at Walmart and other dd also going to be needing glasses I was willing to take a shot for 3 pairs for $65 it couldn't be beat.I ordered style # 34014 with lenses 341 ,3989,and 3382 as sunglasses and I absolutley LOVE the way the first pair feel on and they are rimless and I have wanted rinmless for a long time but after being told once at the eye doctors that they charged $30 PER drill hole I gave up the idea so I was thrilled to get these for $24 BUT they are the one pair that is giving me a slight headache when I put them on,I can see where the nose piece is drilled into the lense and I think that is what is causing my headache.Don't know if that means I should have gone with a larger lense size or if it's just the fact that the bridge is to wide for me? Anyone have any ideas?

I just got my Zenni frames in about a week ago, and they're MUCH better than I expected. I've been wearing them every day (I broke my old frames and was waiting on my new, expensive pair to come in) and have gotten lots of compliments. Now that I realize I spent about $280 on my new frames, and about $30 shipped for my Zenni frames.. I might just get all my glasses online from now on. What a price! I even got thin lenses, anti-reflect and a pretty decent prescription (-6.25 x -6.00).. amazing. Will definitely use again! :)

So far the only place that I've found polarized prescription sunglasses is 39dollarglasses.com. I spend time on the water and want polarized lenses.
Does anyone else sell them? Zenni Optical only has the clip-ons.

I wish I had found this site earlier--when I'd accidentally stepped on my sibling's glasses and had to shell out over $100 for a new pair for her.
But I did recently sit on my pair of glasses I got at Costco--not too expensive--paid over $150 (found receipt which has my prescription) but over a year old so not under warranty. The frame is slightly bent but only I notice it and I've just been wearing them but I would like a back up pair.
One of my eyes sphere is 3.250, the other 1.000 etc . . . . at Costco they convinced me to pay extra otherwise one my lenses was going to be really thick. Is that true?
Thanks.

worked great for me... plus it lets me keep an extra set in luggage/overnight bag. glove box. toolbox my painting pair.. pretty much anywhere... I bought about 5 pair at 8 bucks and 2 "fancy" (upgraded) pairs. tore a contact on vacation and my overnight bag pair saved a trip to a eyeglass place on a sunday.
8 bucks to not have to wait in a walmart optical (who else is open on sunday?) on vacation was well worth it.

BGreider, they did good on signal vision lens both dark for sunglasses as well as singal vision regular lens.
The bi focals were distorted as BGrider stated. Out of 3 pair 1 pair was right. It takes a few weeks after the order to arrive.
While it is true even local places sometimes mess up or invert the numbers , if getting a strong prescription please consider local cost co . My few tries with them were in the past few months.

I bought a pair from them, OK frames, but the prescription was wrong. Sent them back and about two months later the replacement pair showed up -- still bad. And the prescription was for simple reading glasses. Cheap, but useless.
It's only worth it if they actually put your correct prescription in the glasses you buy. They did not put them in my daughter's and their customer service sucks. We never got a pair of glasses she could actually see out of.

I've ordered three pairs from Zenni, including most recently sunglasses.
After owning them for a few months, the really cheap glasses are really cheap. If you spend 25 bucks on some nice titanium ones, they are very good.
why the hell would anyone buy from them if they can't get the prescrips right?

what about your prescription? I just got my first pair of glasses ever almost a year ago. I'm constantly losing them, so this would make a great back up pair. Do you have to know your prescription or what?

I was actually surprised to all of a sudden be reading some negative reviews. (not that they aren't valid)
I just received two pairs of eyeglasses from Zenni Optical and am very happy with both pairs. I purchased a standard metal alloy $8 pair and a $20 memory titanium pair and can barely tell the difference between the two. Meaning that I would have been perfectly satisfied buying the $8 pair alone.
Both prescriptions are spot on and the only down side is that I can't tell the difference between my old prescription and the new one. (barely changed, but hopefully once I break them in I'll notice some small differences)
I will now be doing any future eyeglasses purchases through Zenni Optical and the best part is that I don't need to worry over the price.

I bought a pair from optical4less.com about a year ago with anti-scratch coating. The coating worked great for about 9-10 months and then it was gone, now I have a bunch of scratches. I still think it is worth it to spend $30-$40 on a pair that lasts up to a year and then order another pair.

How much does it generally run to get a checkup to get those stats for the prescription without insurance? Doesn't walmart have a very competitive price?

I don't know about Walmart, but Costco does checkups for $40, and there's no pressure to buy their frames, they just hand you the prescription.
I have had my "titanium" framed glasses from Zenni for 6 months now and they are great--lightweight and the prescription was very accurate. The only downside is that the paint is chipping off.

I am an optician who works in a retail office. I'm not going to preach or tell you how you shouldn't buy glasses through the mail because I'm interested in gouging anyone. I simply want to put some information out here and perhaps give some Caveat Emptor advice.
Out of curiosity about these online stores, I ordered two pair of glasses from goggles4u.com because I had read good things about them. The total for single vision lenses with frame, scratch resistant coat, UV coat and Anti-Glare coat WITH shipping was $25.99.
Now I want to start by saying that my prescription is medium-strength nearsighted with a fair amount of astigmatism. I also had my PD measurement taken at work so it would be correct (I cannot imagine trying to accurately take that measurement yourself in the mirror with a paper ruler!)
My first pair came back with the correct prescription...sort of. The presentation of the product was very nice and they even did tint the lenses for free. They would have been a really sweet pair of glasses, if I could have seen out of them. When I put them on, I got double vision. Now, being an optician, I had the opportunity to take the glasses to work to find out what went wrong. It turns out that even though the prescription was correct, the optical centers were off by 8 millimeters. Doesn't sound like a lot, but that's HUGE when the allowed amount of vertical imbalance is 1mm.
I could have returned them...and even contacted the company for a remake. But I never ended up following through because the frame I'd chosen was out of stock and didn't see another I liked and I forgot to simply return them. (shrugs)
A couple of months ago, I discovered I needed reading glasses, so I decided to give goggles4u another try. Because I understand how the ordering process works, I was able to order the glasses as regular ones by just adjusting the PD to reading distance.
This pair came in better than the first (because I not only gave them the PD height, I also gave them the optical center height...wasn't going through THAT again...). However, they still gave me headaches, so I checked this pair, too. It turns out that the prescription was ground in at the wrong axis. It was off almost 15 degrees. Again, the ANSI standards for this is much less. I was able, by many adjustments of frame and lenses, to make the glasses usable, even though they still give me headaches if I use them for long periods of time.
Does this mean that other people wouldn't have a positive experience from buying glasses online? No. But if you're going to buy online, here are some things you should know:
1) Get your PD taken at the Dr's office and have it written on your prescription. It should not cost any extra money to do this. There is no accurate way of taking your own PD measurement, and really, even being off a couple of millimeters can make the difference between seeing well and getting seasick from your glasses!
2) The stronger or more complicated your prescription is, the less likely that ordering online will work well for you. It seems clear that where ever the glasses are being made, they do not have the same tolerance standards that we have in the USA. In general, the stronger the prescription, the less tolerance for error you can withstand before it adversely affects your ability to see through the glasses. The same is true if you have a medium to high amount of astigmatism.
3) Give them an Ocular Center height. The PD is a horizontal centering of your prescription in the lenses, the OC is a vertical center. This will keep what happened to my first pair from happening to you. A rule of thumb for figuring this out with glasses from online would be to half the vertical measurement of the frame if it's a smaller depth frame (under about 28mm) and about two-thirds of the way up from the bottom if it's a deeper frame. So, if you were buying a frame whose vertical measurement was 26mm, the OC should be about 13mm.
4) If it doesn't say explicitly that the glasses/lenses/frames come with something, they probably don't, so make sure to ask! Will the semi rimless lens edges come in polished and smooth? Probably not, unless you request it. Will it come with Anti-glare or UV? Not unless it says so. Put everything you want in writing in the body of the order so there is no question.
5) Buying No-line bifocals (also called Progressive lenses) online is a risky proposition at best. No lines are hard enough to adjust to when made properly and measurements for them need to be very exact. Any discrepancy on any measurement could make them unwearable.
So, if your prescription is not that strong and/or you don't have very much astigmatism AND you give them all the proper measurements, there's no reason that this kind of service couldn't work for you reasonably well.
Cheap glasses are only worth the money if they work! :)

Thanks for the info, shellebrownies. Can you give guidelines for what's considered a strong prescription or a high amount of astigmatism?

When you buy Rx glasses in a store, dont they measure something in your eye; like the distance your pupil is to something......??

Thanks for the info, shellebrownies. Can you give guidelines for what's considered a strong prescription or a high amount of astigmatism?
I would consider a "strong" prescription (for the purposes of ordering online, that is) to be over -5.00 (nearsighted) or over +3.50 (farsighted). Over those, and even a pair of glasses that came in a little off could make the glasses unable to be used. And the threshold for the astigmatism would be about 1.50 diopters (plus or minus). Once you get over that, the tolerance for the prescription being off axis (the correction for the astigmatism not lining up with where it is in your eye) is very small and it would be extremely bothersome if it was off.
A quick tutorial on prescriptions in case someone needs this information:
(A sample Rx)
-------Sphere------Cylinder------Axis------Add
OD..+2.50........-1.50...........15.......+1.25
OS..+1.75........-2.00..........165......+1.25
OD means right eye; OS means left eye.
Sphere is how nearsighted or farsighted you are. A minus sign before the number means nearsighted; a plus sign before the number means farsighted.
Cylinder is the amount of astigmatism you have. This number could have a plus or a minus sign in front of it, depending on which kind of doctor you saw (In general, it'll be a plus sign if you saw an ophthalmologist and a minus sign if you saw an optometrist.).
Axis is the geometric angle where the astigmatism correction is located in the lens. This needs to match up with the area that needs astigmatism correction in your eye.
Add is the reading addition to make it easier to read close up. Usually this means you have the need for some kind of bifocals or reading glasses.
And yes LucyBirdd, the PD is the measurement that the office usually takes when you order glasses. It is the measurement from the center of one pupil to the center of the other.
Hope that helps! :)

I ordered for the first time last year. I also ordered from eye Doctor
a pair of lenses for my old glasses, I deceided to order from Zennie when they told me that the anti reflective coating was $85.00 more.
The glasses I ordered from Zennie were the same prescription as what I ordered from DR.There was no problem.
This year my prescription stayed the same, but I needed a pair of just reading glasses, that are stronger then what she put into the bi-focal., so I ordered and just received them and my hubby got a pair of sunglasses.. Call me lucky..but both pair were perfect.

I picked up my prescription this morning. I have broken my glasses and need a new pair, but I don't have the money to buy a pair even from a discount store, so I am going to order some online. My prescription is very high, and I have a high amount of astigmatism, but I will have to deal with whatever comes. The cheapest quoted price at the cheapest store around me was $250, and I don't have that right now. I was wondering if you could tell me something though, above you have axis and then add listed, can you tell me which is which in my prescription? It is:
OD - 6.25 - 4.00 x 020
OS - 6.00 - 2.50 x 163
Any other advice to help me get the best glasses online would be appreciated, because like I said, there is no way that I can afford ones from the store right now, and mine are barely staying together.
Also for everyone else, which company shipped the fastest for you, and consistantly provided good lenses? I am seeing a lot of great reviews about Zennie, but don't they take a long time to ship? Thanks in advance!

...I am seeing a lot of great reviews about Zennie, but don't they take a long time to ship?...Search the thread again, there's a lot of bad reviews for Zenni. My experience is about 50/50 with them, but they do offer a frame I personally like, so I'll probably reluctantly use them again. And, yes, they're a little slow. Expect at least 2 weeks, sometimes 5-6 weeks, to receive your glasses.

Got my new rimless specs from Zenni and I must say I'm impressed. This pair cost me about $30 when Eyeglass World charged me over $400 for two rimless pairs and an eye exam. I like 'em.
Only downside is the snap-on sunglasses. They're not the best, but for $4, what the heck. Screw big box eyeglass places. If I ever buy non-internet specs, I'll go to my eye doctor. For now, Zenni did just fine.

Okay, well, here are a few things I can think of that might help. Find an online shop that will do your prescription in Polycarbonate instead of Plastic. In general, people with a high minus RX have clearer vision with Polycarbonate lenses and people with a high plus RX have clearer vision in Plastic. (High minus Rxes can seem "cloudy" in plastic)
You NEED to make sure you give an OC (ocular center) measurement and make sure to get your PD measurement from your doctor to give yourself the best chance at getting something wearable.
Lastly, choose a site that has a generous return policy. That way, if the glasses come in and are unusable, you won't be just out that money.
Most all the online sites take at least two weeks because most of them cut their lenses overseas.
Your prescription has sphere, cylinder and axis. There's no add power, so you don't need bifocals.
Also, have you thought of taking your lenses to a discount place like Walmart or Costco and seeing if they can find a frame that will fit your current lenses?

Consider upgrading your lenses to a higher index. For example, upgrade from the 1.59 index to 1.65, etc. The higher the number, the more light will bend passing through it, so the less material you need, so the lenses will be thinner. (Again, you could consider getting Polycarbonate, if you can find an online place that sells it, because it'll be clearer for your RX and it'll probably be a bit thinner than the plastic unless you upgrade to 1.65 or higher plastic.) Hope that helps. :)

I bought another pair of specs from Zenni and tried the "high index" lens (1.67) thinking I'd get a fairly "thin" set of lenes (it was $37 more or ~double the price of the "regular" lenes).
It was a waste of money. They are still very thick. (my script is -7.50)
To be fair, I did get a "little" bit larger lenes verses my last pair of specs and apparently with the high index, if you want to try the high index at Zenni, get the smallest lenes (which still look good and fit your face) so that the thickest edge part of the lenes get cut off.
Still...I wouldn't spend the extra money again for high index at Zenni. To get really thin specs for a strong prescription, you need to get a REALLY high index (e.g., 1.7x, 1.8x, etc.) which is not offered at Zenni. The trade-off is heavier glasses and cost. I work with a guy who has a script of ~-12.00 and he pays ~$1,000 for high index of ~1.91:vomit:
The glasses are still very nice and the quality is very good so I'm still happy with the purchase.

I bought a really cheap pair from zenni to test them out. I have to say I'm pleasently surprised with them. I was a little worried about ordering a pair online, but now I doubt I'll buy them in a store again. I'll be buying a more expensive pair from zenni once I've had my eyes checked again.

I ended up buying two pairs of glasses from Goggles4u.com, mainly because they were the cheapest and the only company that didn't charge me extra for my high perscription. I ordered the higher index that is one step up from the regular, and when they cae, they were thinner than the $250 pair I bought 2 years ago and paid extra for. I can see perfectly well out of both pairs, and for $72 for both pairs this has been a godsend. The only complaint I have is that the one pair is plastic frames and have no nose pieces, and it is extremley hard for me to keep them on my face. I doubt they would do an exchange simply because I don't care for the frames I picked out, so I will just keep them as a back up pair. I would highly recommend them to anyone!
I'm probably going to buy a pair of prescription sunglasses for the summer..
If you are buying from Zenni, I would recommend not getting the darkest tint available. I have had sunglasses before, and these were way too dark. In anything except the brightest glare and sun, everything was too dark. Get one shade lighter than the darkest.

I usually buy 4-8 pairs of glasses from zenni every time my prescription changes or I've either slept on, stepped on, sat on, or lost my previous pairs of glasses.
I've got rimless glasses for myself + 2 pairs for my son for total about $70, very happy with all of them. prescription is OK, delivered in 2 weeks. I wish they have better selection for frames that can be used for sunglasses.

Do you know what kind of front length you are looking for? Goggles4u.com have a ton of frames for females. They don't have anything listed as specifically children's frames, but they have front lengths starting at 90mm. You can search by the different measurements of an old pair of her glasses or a face measurement, and find glasses that would be suited to hre size. If you don't have any idea, visit your local Walmart and try on some and find the measurements from those, that is what I did LOL. Anyways, they have super low prices, and my glasses turned out perfect even with a high rx. They take about 2 weeks to arrive, and their customer service is pretty good about returns and such. On another note has anyone ever gotten a discount code for zenni? They have a slot on the order form for a code and when I emailed them asking for a code their response was that they do not offer codes since their prices are already so low.My response to that was why is there a slot on the order form but got no response on that one.Just seems like very poor customer service to me.

mama2m&m- I have a son who is finishing 5th grade and started wearing glasses in 1st. I don't know how old your daughter is but I'd strongly suggest paying the extra $ for flex frames. I even have some for myself- my kids are 10, 7, 5, and 3. It's just easier where kids are concerned. I ordered my ds a pair a few months ago and they're GREAT! Having a problem with Zenni.
I asked them a question via their website last week and received no answer.
I called today and got the message that the next available rep would take my call. Then it flipped to "please leave your message" and then it flipped to " the mailbox cannot accept any more messages".
No answers via two different methods over a period of days raises a big red flag to me.

Slightly off topic, but on the subject of reading glasses |
I haven’t been there in three years, but if you are in the Pompano Beach area in South Florida, you can stop by the Eye Deals booth in the Festival Flea Market on Sample Road (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/_ylt=Ahm4F8hrOiL2723E7palwnYQQGoL/SIG=1171ibles/**http%3A//www.festivalfleamarket.com/) to see a good selection of made in China reading glasses. The last time I was there, the prices for glasses with plastic lenses and flexible hinges was at least as good as from the mail order places cited, although lacking in fine adjustments for pupil distance and the like. The glasses have a sticker on the lens with the diopter magnification setting, up to 3.25 as I recall. No shipping charge, but there is that 6% Florida sales tax.
When I was trying out glasses back then, some were uncomfortable, with stiff hinges and badly positioned nose pads. So trying out the eyeglasses at this mall, if you are in the neighborhood, or any other similar mall with a cut-rate eyeglasses vendor, is a good idea.
And no, I have nothing to do with Eye Deals except as a customer.

Yes that is exactly what I did with my order two weeks ago. Just that if you have a strong RX (above +/-4 or 5), you might wanna choose higher index lenses. otherwise the glasses will be thick (dark but thick).

I ordered these (http://www.zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=535&cat=20&page=1) from Zenni with my last order and get compliments on them at least once or twice a week. No one would ever believe I paid $8 for them! :) The only thing I'd do differently is order the thinner lenses.
Hi, I am new here. Nice to meet you everyone
I m trying to get a new pair of glasses and was doing some research...
I never buy glasses online...
How are the quality of those frame?
comparing Zenni, optical4less, etc?
I also found this eyewearmagic (http://www.eyewearmagic.com)
they have some frames i like and they are cheap too.
Does anyone has any experience with them?
Thanks! :worship:

2nd time im ordering from lbw. First time it was great, the glasses took a week to arrive, but everything was perfect.
2nd time, there was something def. wrong with the prescription. one eye was off by .5(i had it checked by another lens maker and confirmed my prescription with the eye doctor).
Their customer service is awful, usually never picks up and if you leave a message...well good luck with that. try calling them after 5pm eastern time, it has worked out for me.
I ordered the "transition" lens from them, but I am not exactly satisfied. They are somewhat thick, but on their website there is no choice for a higher index for transitions. You would assume when you pay $50 you would get a better index, but they simply put the 1.67.
Now the glasses were shipped back to them to be remade, that is if they manage to do it correctly this time.
Probably wouldn't order from them again, its too much of a headache.
How is zennioptical?

what are your OD and OS numbers roughly?.. i just wanna compare with mines..
I have been using contacts for 2 years and i think it is time to wear eyeglasses every once in a week at least
link to LBW Eyewear (http://www.lbweyewear.com) Great customer service. Shipping takes one to two weeks USPS first class mail. Glasses come in padded envelope with a nice soft-touch hard case.
link to Zenni Optical (http://www.zennioptical.com) Customer service is not the best. Shipping takes one to two weeks USPS first class mail. Glasses come in padded envelope with a translucent plastic magnetic case.
link to 39dollarglasses (http://www.39dollarglasses.com) best place to get a lens replacement for your frame. i used it because i couldn't find my frame for sale anywhere. Shipping is very fast and glasses come in padded envelope with a high quality case AND pouch.
I know there are many more out there, but I have personal experience with these two companies. Both eyeglasses I received from them were of exceptional quality.
I can speak for the quality of 39dollarglasses.com I've been using then for about 5 or 6 years. Good quality glasses, fast shipping, and not bad customer service. Just ordered two pair from them again in last 2 weeks. One progressive no line varilux lense pair, with anti reflective coating about 124.00. The second pair was just for reading single vision with the same frames for 34.00. Just make sure yout fill out your priscription correctly, because they will charge you extra to correct your mistake, plus shipping there and back.
Off coarse this depends on what type of frames you order. I always order the same frames, I've been using for years, I like them, and that way I always have spare parts when I retire the old ones. If your not sure how to fill out the online precription form, called them, and they will help get it right the first time.

Hey everyone, I could probably use some help here, as I have really bad eyes, and haven't got a new pair of glasses in 9 years (I usually wear contacts whenever I'm awake, but lately they've been bothering my eyes so I need a break)...
My prescription is
+9.00-0.75X148
+9.00-2.25X025
And my PD according to a printable ruler is 60, but I'm going to ask my extremely nice eye doctor tomorrow what it really is.
Anyways, the glasses I have now are majorly coke-bottlish, and I want something alot thinner... Which place is going to give the thinnest lenses for cheap? I'm pretty sure I need the 1.67s, but any more info would help me alot....

I know there have been some bad experiences noted about attempting to contact Zenni.
Just wanted to say that I just had to contact them regarding an order I placed last night. I had measured my PD and found out this morning that it was incorrect (called my eye doctor and they gave it to me). I called Zenni at the 800 number listed on their website and was put into the on-hold queue. I was constantly updated via the automated system what number I was in the queue (sort of reminded me of that automated number system at the DMV over the loud speaker). My total time spent on hold along with the time for them to correct my order was a total of 6 minutes.
The gentleman was very pleasant and helpful.

Make sure you compare the SIZE of the frame. The greater the size (width) the thicker the lenses will be! For instance, a 52mm width will be much thicker than a 48mm width.
Another suggestion - first order the glasses with standard lenses. I ordered several glasses with the standard "free" lenses first to make sure I liked the frame. I was able to try them on and it is ALWAYS a good idea to have an extra frame for parts. Then you can reorder higher index lens if you like the frame. Also, you will get an idea of how thick the lenses will be...

You should check out http://www.greateyeglasses.com. They are $15 for a pair, but the quality is much, much better then these cheapos. I've switched over them. Let me know what you think if you try them.
I can't believe nobody's asked this question yet (yes, I searched), but what about prescription ski/snowboard goggles?
Do any of these sites make them? Anybody ordered?
I love to ski/snowboard, and everything is fine as long as the weather is ok and I can wear my prescription sunglasses, but if it's snowing and goggles are required I have to choose between:
1) can't see because I'm wearing goggles w/no glasses, or
b) can't see because my sh*t is fogged up. Yes, I've tried everything... conditions here are usually too warm/wet for any anti-fog to do any good.
Thanks for any tips...

Hi, I bought a new pair of "designer" glasses last year (Marchon Flexon half rims that look super nice,) as I hadn't had a pair in three years, and it was before I found slickdeals and this thread.
I paid way too much and went through hell trying to get them to put the lenses in properly, but they still aren't right. Well, I haven't had them a year yet and the ear pieces are starting to disintegrate (the plastic is flaking off in layers.) So, I'm just going to get some new ones from one of the sites listed here.
But I have a couple of questions:
I tried calling my doctor for the Interpupillary Distance and the girl I spoke to had no idea what I was talking about, she told me to call back tomorrow and the "manager" might know more. WTF? (I will never go to this Dr. or eyeglasses store EVER again.)
1.) Anyway...I had my husband measure and he said 55mm. But just to double check I tried to take some pictures myself, and came up with the same, 55mm. Since the average I saw some people list was 58-72mm, I'm wondering am I measuring wrong since mine seems pretty low, or could I just be on the lower end of the spectrum?
2.) Also, if I'm off by a MM or two, how much will that matter? I'm just getting single vision and my prescription is "OD -1.5, cylinder -0.2,5 axis 100 and OS -1.5, Sph." that's the entirety of what's listed on my prescription.
3.) Lastly, how do I enter the prescription if it says "sph". for the OS cylinder and blank for the OS axis?
TIA for the help. :D
EDIT: I tried another method for supposedly getting your PID by marking a pair of glasses you have on with a marker and measuring the distance, and it gave me 65mm, so I'm absolutely confused at this point.

i just put a ruler in front of my face in front of a mirror and close one eye measure, then the other eye. Pretty accurate that way.
Just got mine today. These are great, love the look and the legs are bendable. I like them much better than the $300 pair I already have.

These are shorter than I thought so don't like them much and I feel a little dizzy wearing them: http://www.zennioptical.com/cart/product.php?productid=980&cat=0&page=1
One out of two but I'll take $25 pair of glasses anyday.

Glasses Without Correction in the Lens - It is quite possible to order eyeglasses with no prescription in the lens. You simply leave the prescription data entry fields defaulted to zero, but you will be required to enter a PD, to get the computer to process the order. Use 63, as it is a median number for an adult. It’s a good idea to include a note at the end of the order, in the Customer Comments section, indicating that this is an order for a pair of glasses with no correction in the lens.

OD = right eye. Your right eye has an astigmatism. Due to the curvature of your eye, the Rx is different in 1/2 of your lens. The PD is more important in an Rx with an astigmatism. Ideally, you want the center of your lens to line up with your pupil. However, this is not an exact science and there is generally room for some error.
OS = left eye. You do NOT have an astigmatism in this eye according to your Rx. So, they right sph vs leaving it blank - just to clarify that they didn't forget and leave something off.
The girl you called has no clue because you used correct, but less utilized terminology. Call back and call it your "PD." Many, many people working in optical shops do not have adequate training let alone a degree in the field. They will know what PD is because that is what they see on their paper work.
I don't believe in asking for reps, but I do believe you should let someone know if their advice is helpful. It takes a significant amount of time to share insight and it is only polite to show some sort of appreciation. Due to lack of any type feedback, I've decided not to post on this thread anymore. I'm not disgruntled, just assuming my numerous posts haven't been helpful and I should really find a more productive use of my time Take care and enjoy your glasses!

Definitely get 1.67. Choose a smaller sized frame and go with Zenni or Goggles4u. I've had bad experience with LBW (I have a strong near-sight RX and their 1.61 glasses were way thicker than Zenni's 1.59 glasses)

I used Zenni Optical last month after hearing about it on Clark Howard's radio program; I received my 2 pairs in less then 2 weeks. I added on a couple options and the total for both came to about $60, still less the what I would have to pay if I used my insurance to buy just one pair. BTW my vision is -2.75 in both eyes.

Interesting, I will have to check this out.
Just got 4 pairs in a little over 2 weeks- 2 for me and 2 for DH. Mine are perfect for what I ordered. Perfect vision so far and no headaches (despite the fact that I had to measure my own PD because the optometrist refused to give it to me). I didn't get the anti-reflective coating because I wanted to make sure they would even come out ok. I'm def. ordering that next time!
DH gets a little dizzy with his, but this might be because he's been solely w/ contacts for 2 years. Might have to recheck his PD.
We plan to order a couple more pairs this month! Last bill was less than $45 for 4 pairs of glasses! Can't beat that!! :)

I just got my sunglasses from Zenni that I ordered. I am VERY impressed. For $20, I got sunglasses that would've easily cost me $200 elsewhere. Also, I have a + (or -, I forget) 5.25 in one eye and still used a 1.57 (standard) lens and they are very thin on the frames.

I think you are right to put zero for the missing numbers. I belive the cylinder number is for astigmatism. If you are unsure I would call and ask. On my scrip, my Doc put "PL" for a zero. Took me a while to figure that one out.
Can someone please help me out? I'm trying to order a pair of eyeglasses for my parent.
Zenni asked for 4 things (SPH, CYL, AXIS and ADD). The prescription I have has 3 things (SPH, CYL and AXIS) and these are under Distance. There is a separate row called Reading Addition which I initially thought is for the 4 thing ADD Zenni asked for. However, the prescription shows 2 numbers written across both R (1st row) and L (2nd row) eyes as 12 50.
The OD-ADD or OS-ADD from zenni only goes up to 3.5, so what can this reading addition on the prescription be????!??? Please help!!

NOW to figure out where to order. i just went thru all 44 pages of this massive thread... and it look like Zenni Optical is the popular choice w/ mostly good reviews, some negatives.
so if there's no objections i'm going to try Zenni with the 1.61 thickness, haven't decided if i'll get AR or not.

However, the prescription shows 2 numbers written across both R (1st row) and L (2nd row) eyes as 12 50.
The OD-ADD or OS-ADD from zenni only goes up to 3.5, so what can this reading addition on the prescription be????!??? Please help!!
Please read post #548, this may help you. Also, click on the little question marks on the ZENNI order form it's a good helper.

Don't think I will ever buy from Zenni Optical again. My first pair of glasses from them was fine, but the second one was botched. They ruined the prescription on it. I never wear their glasses anyways because they're backup.

i got 2 pairs of glasses - 1 a noline bifocal and 1 single vision. the single vision is fine but the no line bifocal is messed up.
i took the pair to a local store and got the prescription verified and confirmed that it is wrong and sent it back to them so that they can fix it. they send me back a note that says - the prescription is exactly what i ordered. So beware while ordering bifocals( the power is +3.25 for those wondering).

My guess is that the add is +2.50
I think the cross of the + sign is written right on the line separating the rows.
No one has a 12.50 add!

I very much appreciate it! I would have had no idea about that if you hadn't posted, so I'm exceptionally grateful! :D The gratitude is more than likely there, people just don't feel the need to post it. *Shrug.* But I thank you very much for your help!!! :worship:

I have noticed that http://www.greateyeglasses.com has polarized sunglasses which is not an option for other online retailers. Can someone share the experienced if ordered one?
I have never tried polarized from this company, but I have gotten them from Lenscrafter & they were outrageously expensive, but I'd never get a pair that wasn't polarized again. They were so worth it... LOVE them. So maybe I'll try this company next time as they are certainly cheaper.

Here's how to get the PD number from your OD. Went to Walmart and asked for prescription--which they gladly gave me. Asked for the PD number and explained that I was going out of the country on a long vacation. Told they I was concerned that I couldn't speak the language if I lost my glasses and needed them replaced. Walmart handed me the script with the PD! Went to Sams for husband's script. Asked for the PD and they added it without question. No problem,
Ordered 4 pair from Zenni--the cheap $8 ones. One was tinted for sunglasses. Husband's were progressive. All 4 were great.

Alrighty, I just placed an order from Zenni tonight. I ordered the following:
3189 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Full-Rim Frame with Stainless Steel Bridge With AR Coating and 80% Gery Tint
3186 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Half-Rim Frame with Stainless Steel Bridge
3146 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Half Rim Frame with AR Coating
3396 Plastic Full-Rim Frame
Plus Shipping it came out to $72.65. (All are single vision and only a small/moderate prescription, astigmatism in one eye, and I just chose their regular/free thickness lenses.) Considering I paid over $300 for just one pair of glasses and one of sunglasses less than a year ago and they are falling apart already (designer name brand frames that I baby to the max and take absolute care of,) I think that's a steal for 4 full sets of glasses! I guess we'll see if I'm a sucker when the actually get here. I'll give a detailed review once they arrive, my fingers are crossed.
Thanks to everyone that gave great info and help in this thread, it was so very informative. :worship:
P.S. I bought so many with the intention of the shotgun effect. At least one of the frames will have to work for me.

does anyone know the lowest power available for eyeglasses?
In everyday practice...
+.25 or -.25 SPH in one eye
Plano in the other
In theory...
any + or minus number greater/lesser than 0 as long as it is ground in the lens it will bend light however slightly creating an rx.
Most scripts go in .25 dioper increments... really precise rx's (overkill) may use .12 diopter increments.
A lensometer is good for .12 diopter accuracy while verifying the rx.
New wavefront grinding methods can grind to near .01 diopter accuracy

i just received my first pair from Zenni and am for the most part pleased. the prescription seems spot on
however viewing something straight on and then turning the head, or keeping the head still and looking laterally makes everything stretch and blur, moreso than my previous glasses. these frames i got are 135mm wide so the lenses are bigger than my old ones
i got the standard lens thickness. would getting the thinnest lenses improve the lateral vision so it's not as distorted? it seems to have things not be distorted i have to really look straight thru the middle of the lenses and not even a little to the sides.
any advice would be helpful. i'm probably going to get another of the same frame with the thin lenses and AR coating just to try them out
lastly, 1.61 or 1.67? big difference or pretty similar?
I would get the AR for computer and TV glare. If you read many posts you see alot of people that didn't get it wished they did.

My prescription and my daughters have only the three columns filled in also. The same as yours, the first 3. We both have astigmatism. My prescription also has a /+150 ( I need bi-focals). Your PD does seem off, are you sure the 5 is not a 6? My PD is 63, my daughters is 60. ( I was just looking at my daughters script and hers has a space for reading addition, right,od, left os. Maybe 12 is for one eye and 50 is for the other. That doesn't sound right either. I really think someone else could help you more than I.

I've bought the same rimless frame twice from Zenni. First time, very nice frame, horrible lenses that took several attempts to get mostly non-distorted. Two years later, I broke down & ordered the same thing again, since I liked the frame & am still a cheapskate.;) This time the lenses are flawless and much nicer that last time with polished edges & everything. The frame, however, is obviously a cheap knock-off of the same frame I purchased two years ago. Not horrible, certainly what one should expect for $28, but disappointing enough to swap the new lenses into the old frame.

My best guesses..
Your add is +1.25 OU (both eyes)
12 50 could possibly mean 1.25 (poorly written)
-OR-
Your add is +2.50
12 50 is + 2.50 with the 1 actually being a + sign
Either way you better determine the right power.. why not call the doc for clarification?

All single vision lenses will be most precise in the optical center. If your rx is high the thickness "could" account for your distortion to the side. An aspheric design would help with edge distortion as would anti-reflective. Good measurements would also be very important as is frame adjustments. No big difference but 1.67 should be thinner.
Before you spend more money I would take them into any optician and have them do a little troubleshooting... bring your rx and glasses. Go in during a slow time and most good opticians will be more than happy to try to help you (even if you didn't purchase them there). It might be a simple adjustment or it might be that the glasses were made incorrectly and are distorting your vision. Either way it's better than the shotgun effect of buying more pair just to see. Good money after bad if you ask me.

thanks a lot for the advice. my prescription is -5.25 and -4.75
i unfortunately already ordered the pairs :O the main thing i've noticed after the second day of wearing them is that computer screens are blurrier. i'm really hoping the AR coating helps as right now as i type the letters are kind of blurry compared to my previous glasses even though these new ones are better in other everyday use
another thing that i'm not sure is even real or not is that after i remove these new glasses after wearing them for a while, there is a very slight gray haze to everything. this was definitely not the case with my previous glasses. it's like everything is in a soft gray filter. it's barely noticeable but kind of strange. have you ever heard of anything like that?
at this point i'm going to try them until the new ones arrive and if the new ones feel the same i'll definitely take them to an optician to have them checked out. for the most part they seem normal but the things i'm concerned about now is the slight eye strain (probably from the new prescription), lateral distortion, gray haze and computer blurriness... kind of a long list ha! :D the good thing is the prescription is very accurate and i can see most things very clearly. hopefully all these things are just getting used to the new glasses and not defects that are damaging my eyes :(

I am VERY pleased with Zenni. I purchased a $400 pair locally and a $68 pair from Zenni. They were both frameless, progressive bifocals with a pretty strong prescription. I like the Zenni better than the expensive pair. They prescription is right on and they seem to be better quality. When I ordered, I really screwed up the prescription order and they were alert enough to catch and question it before they filled the order. If they had sent what I ordered, I would now be looking like Marty Feldman (Igor in the movie Young Frankenstein)

At -4.75 and -5.25 you have a PD tolerance of 1.25mm per eye. That is a very small tolerance. It is crucial for proper vision that your actual PD is within that tolerance or you WILL be inducing unwanted prism (pulling of the eyes) possibly quite a bit which could account for some/all of your issues. Secondly if the material is polycarbonate you may be experiencing some chromatic abberation if you are sensitive to it (small segment of the population). High index will be better as will the addition of AR. If your powers went up computer blurriness could be a focal length issue... chances are your glasses are set to infinite focus (distance) and they are too much minus power for a decent computer rx (24 inches), if you are near/over 40 this is a pretty likely scenario(presbyopia). If that is the case you need another set with a different rx for the computer or switch to progressives.
Your prescription is simple.. hence the "accurate" vision as they are likely the right power (they probably used stock lenses) however there are many other factors to consider at 5+ diopters of power. Even the vertical placement of the optical center is important with your powers.

Got my glasses today. And I'd say, so far, I'm pretty happy. The quality (especially on the lenses) far exceeds my expectations, and is vastly superior to the level of service I got from the "high quality" ones at Eyemasters. The scrip seems spot on, no flaws or distortions that I can discern as so far, no scratches, nicks, or cracks. The polishing is super nice. The AR coating I got on two of them is great, I can only detect the "green tint" occasionally on the glare itself, it's totally not noticeable on everything else. The frames themselves are good (a few really minor issues, most of which will be solved once I adjust them more, but they seem "good" quality, maybe not fantastic, but certainly good.) Nothing broke when I adjusted the nose pieces (yay!) so, I'm happy as a clam. They only main complaint I have has nothing to do with anything Zenni did, the black plastic frames just don't look good on me, but I knew that was an $8 gamble. It's just such a departure from what I would have normally chosen style-wise. But that's MY fault, not theirs. So, far I know I'll be a repeat customer. Guess, I'll see how long they last with "everyday" wear and tear.
Oh, and they packaged them really well. My mail lady stuffed them and several other packages in my mail box so tight I had to practically pry them out of the box and they were all still perfectly intact, so I'm very relieved. And the one set on the lower right side is almost identical to my retail store glasses. I'm shocked by the similarity.

Can i ask what models those are?
I got these four:
3189 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Full-Rim Frame with Stainless Steel Bridge With AR Coating and 80% Gery Tint
3186 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Half-Rim Frame with Stainless Steel Bridge
3146 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Half Rim Frame with AR Coating
3396 Plastic Full-Rim Frame
And the 3146's have become my everyday glasses, the Flexon's from Eyemasters have been retired for the time being, I love these from Zenni!
I don't know if anyone cares, but here's the review I submitted to eyeglassretailreviews.com, maybe it'll help someone out (since I get the feeling it won't be posted there.)
After being recommended EyeglassRetailerReviews.com I scoured every review and opinion I could find to try and get the best quality for my dollar from an online eyeglasses company. My saga began with an eyeglasses store purchase less than a year ago. I bought two pairs (one regular and one sunglasses) for $400 or so. After they made them wrong several times, they discounted them and I just took them out of desperation and frustration (9 trips to the store will do that to a person.) At this point, I didn't know you could get glasses online. Well, here it is not even a year later and they are starting to fall apart. I can't stand it anymore so I decided to place an order from Zenniopitical.com. It seems to offer the best prices with the best freebies (coatings etc.) and has gotten a lot of good reviews.
August 13, 2008 I placed an order with Zennioptical.com for the following:
3189 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Full-Rim Frame with Stainless Steel Bridge With AR Coating and 80% Gery Tint
3186 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Half-Rim Frame with Stainless Steel Bridge
3146 Bendable (Memory) Titanium Half Rim Frame with AR Coating
3396 Plastic Full-Rim Frame
My prescription is -1.5 -0.25 100, and -1.5 Shp. With a PD of 62. Nothing extraordinary or special order. I opted to get the base free thickness of lenses and only the extra's listed above. Standard $4.95 shipping. So, the total was $72.65 for 4 full sets of lenses and frames! I got my email order confirmation immediately.
August 22, 2008 Received all glasses ordered, in a gray USPS bubble wrap mailer/bag. (I had not gotten any emails from Zenni saying my glasses had shipped, so it was a nice surprise, I never thought they'd arrive so quickly.)
The glasses were all wrapped in their microfiber cleaning clothes, then put into individual zip top bags and labeled, then each had it's own plastic glasses case to protect it. Despite rough treatment by the mail lady and being crammed into our mail box, they were all in perfect condition, no scratches, dents, or bends. All of the frames are in great condition and only needed minor adjustments. About two minutes and a couple of tweaks to each one with some soft tipped needle nose pliers and they all feel great.
My favorite set, the 3146's, were a little tight on my head at the ends of the arms at first, but now that I've been wearing them for a while, they feel fine. The AR coating that I gambled on, by only putting them on this pair, is great! The only time I see any sort of a green tint is when I'm looking at the frames (not while wearing them) and a light source is reflected directly off of them. I get no color difference while having them on. They are very comfortable and seem to be of good craftsmanship. The lenses are perfect! Spot on prescription and no defects, flaws, or aberrations that I can discern in the plastic. No scratches, and the edge polishing is fantastic. (My glasses from Eyemasters look like they had a beaver gnaw them into shape.) I can't find a flaw in them yet (and I've been looking!) On this pair, the right arm did feel a bit loose at first, but after fiddling with it, it seems to have seated itself back into place and is fine. They are exceptionally light weight and the lenses are MUCH thinner than my old pair (I even splurged and got the higher end technology/poly lenses and the Zenni ones are still better!) Some might find the arms too thin, but in the memory titanium I don't think it should be a problem, they seem sturdy. My eyes adjusted to the lenses within a few hours, it took weeks(!) with my last pair. I'm thrilled with this set and I'm wearing them as I type!
The 3186's are in the same immaculate condition, they aren't my favorites, only due to the fact the frames are smaller/less wide then my old ones and seem a tad small for my face. I would adore them if they were a bit wider, I really like the shape and style. They feel like they might take slightly longer to adjust to the lenses due to the size/angle difference, but otherwise they are still great quality. They will make a very fine back up pair.
The 3189's I got with the highest tint they offer because my older sunglasses are a little too light for my taste (and suffer the same quality problems my regular glasses do.) It's been raining here, so I haven't had a chance to test the AR coating outside yet, but they are just as nicely crafted as the previously mentioned frames. The lenses are just as nice as well. My only gripe is they are a bit on the small side too, but again, that's due to my frame selection, not a mistake on Zenni's part. One thing I do mind about these frames, and the 3186's, is the fact that the arms are thicker and aren't "bare" metal, they have an almost waxy feeling plastic sheath or coating on them that I don't like so much. Not a big issue, but worth mentioning. Now that I look at them more closely, I do see a few mars or divots in the plastic coating. It looks like if I press too hard with my fingernail it might mark it up a bit. Not to the point it would take a chunk out or anything, just leave a little indentation or impression in the plastic/rubber. It shouldn't be a huge deal, but a gripe nonetheless. Overall, I'm happy with them.
Lastly, the 3396's. Sadly, I don't particularly care for these. I had hoped to try and venture into a different style than I'm used to (as you can see I'm partial to the bendable metal half rims) and try something new, but I failed a bit on these. I just don't think they look good on me, but that's obviously not a craftsmanship issue, it's personal preference and a selection error on my part. But I don't think these glasses are as high a quality as the other ones (hence the cheaper price tag more than likely,) either. They bend/flex a little when you touch them (and not in a good way, I think) and when they do you can hear the lenses creak or kind of clunk against the plastic frames, like they're shifting in the frame. If I touch them it almost seems like the lenses could pop out, I don't want to torture test that theory though. As I've never had a pair like this before, I'm uncertain as to whether this is a normal occurrence or not. The edge polishing seems a bit more lack luster on this frame as well, I think it's because of the nature of the frames (or the price,) they cover the edge way more, so I don't think they took as much care doing the edges up, not that they are poorly done mind you, just not a smooth and nice. This flaw does not interfere with their functioning or look in any way. The hinges are really tight, so if I were to wear them daily, I think I'd have to lube the hinges or something so they open more easily. I get a creepy "I'm going to break these things" feeling every time I try to open the arms up because they are so tight. These are so drastically different than what I'm used to, my eyes are taking a lot longer to get used to them. I get a little distortion or disorientation feeling if I move my head too fast, but I hope that would fade as my eyes adjust. These also have a really thick frame around the lenses in comparison to the others, so it's a bit jarring and difficult to get used to. One more major issue for these is, that since they are one piece of plastic, there's no adjustment for the nose pieces, that's a huge detractor for me as I don't find them terribly comfortable. For $8 it was a worthwhile foray into a different style though. Live and learn. And they are still perfectly useful if I need a backup in an emergency, they still function just fine.
As a whole, this has been a much better experience than I anticipated. I worried so many things would be wrong with them once they arrived, and that I had just wasted money. But I am thrilled to say I was totally wrong! I am very happy with ZenniOptical's products, from quality, to selection, and shipping, I am one happy camper. I would very much recommend them to anyone wanting to avoid the horrors of local optical shops and their exorbitant prices. I am extremely content with their services and will most assuredly do business with them again! :)
Overall - Great! I'm super happy with my purchases.
Shipping - Great! Pretty low shipping cost and came super quick. Packaged very well too.
Styles - Good selection, though I wish they had more colors and arm styles on the Memory Titanium frames.
Customer Service - N/A (Thankfully didn't have the need, so far.)
Pricing - Excellent, is putting it mildly.
Will use again? - Yes! In fact, my Mom is going to buy from them on my recommendation too.

i received two more pairs from zenni, and both are very good. i don't know if the AR coating makes any difference, if it does i think it's minimal.
and for the first time in my life i have sunglasses! oh how i've envied sunglass wearing folks and now i'm one of them :)

Do these places work for people with REALLY BAD eyes?
While I realize that most B&M stores are overpriced (I just paid $700 for a pair of designer frames) it's hard to find places online that use the ultra-high-index plastic lenses which I have to use since I'm veryvery nearsighted...
good question...i have really bad eyesight...think i should try one of these places? thanks for any help!

I'm planning to order from Zenni later today. I am going to get glasses with magnetic sunglasses. Have any of you order both gray and amber tint?
I prefer really dark sunglasses and think I would like the grey better. The frame colors that look better on me (brown, gold) come with amber tint. I also tend to prefer the look of a grey lens. Just wondering if there is much difference in darkness between the two and what you thought of how they look in general.
I'm planning to order the frameless -- like them, hate them, any advice?

I'm planning to order the frameless -- like them, hate them, any advice?I have some Zenni rimless with grey magnetic clip-ons. They are acceptably dark, darker than many clip-ons I've seen, but could be darker. Can't speak for the amber, but Zenni is pretty good about answering pre-order questions, so shoot them an email. Maybe you can request a grey lens w/ brown clipon, many of their gold clip-ons already have grey lenses. You could also just order an extra grey lens clip-on in a different frame color, that wouldn't look too bad.
I also like rimless frames in general, but they are fragile, so keep that in mind. The lenses are weak where drilled, break one & your only feasible option is to buy a whole new pair of glasses.

Considering your tolerances are at most 1mm in any direction and a degree or two on axis...I would think twice about using an internet vendor.
Aspheric Hi -Index 1.67 w/ AR is your best choice of lenses. Unless you like unwanted prism even your OC (Optical center) should be taken into account at your powers. They most likely ship anything close to your Rx to make a profit most people can't tell the difference but once your Rx goes above 3 Diopters I'd be careful it's your eyes!
It still amazes me people try to skimp on their eyeglasses yet don't bat an eye at getting a big HDTV.. guess what the view on your new HDTV is only as good as your glasses!
Remember glasses are your face..your look. Watches (which are mostly hidden) people spend a couple hundred yet glasses (always seen) people bargain shop for $20, like i said I just don't get it.
Zenni is GREAT for those with low order (less than 3 diopter) Rx's in single vision as long as you don't care about real designer frames (Why? because at that order you can't really tell the difference if they are made wrong)... everyone else you get what you pay for and likely are missing out on the best vision for your eyes.

I just ordered from Zenni Optical last week - haven't gotten them yet and I am dying to see if these cheap online eyeglass retailers will perform according to the countless reviews I've read. My Rx is a weird one as one eye (right) is -4.75, and the other (left) is -2.75. At the last minute, I opted to go with the 1.57 lens instead of the 1.61 high index. Should I have opted for the higher index lens instead? I read somewhere that high index lenses are advisable for Rx over +/- 3.00. I figured, I have such a weird Rx that only one eye will benefit from this "thinning" so I went with the 1.57. I'm just worried that much like the previous user, Belchior, I, too, will get the hazy/blurriness whilst trying to look from side-to-side. Help?

anyone know what the hell to input in all the prescription field? my doctor gave me a paper that just says "-2.00" if it helps theres also something in the bottom with SV checked off.]
im new to buying glasses
SV= single vision... if it just says -2 that's your diopter (for both eyes?). no axis required (zero) because you apparently don't have astigmatism.
You still need to figure out your PD though (distance between pupils). Either get your doc to tell you or have someone measure it as described earlier in the thread...

I've used www.glasses4less.com
Great custmer service, they even called me on the phone since I had so many questions.
When I was having my glasses in Hong Kong, the shop owner told me they have this site glasses4less which bring business for them worldwide.
I never pay any attention since then.
Just from that experience B&M, they charge is just average, timing is 10 days and even forget to added AR coating. Although sales are nice but ........
Recently just brought 4 pairs from Zenni and surprisingly received email confirm prescription input whether correct or not. Glasses arrived around two weeks later with first class mail and protected with hard case. For the price I pay, I got what I expected and satisfy with what I purchased.
Besides, they really got a lot of variety choices. What to complain about?

We've been using Zenni Optical for around 2-3 years now and never had a single issue until this last order.
Lots of companies have bad customer service. But they deliver a good product at a cheap price, most of the time. Rather than get hung up on one missing order, think of all the money you saved from all the other orders that came through. Try to always have a spare pair and don't go making crazy changes in your prescription, OK? ;)
Don't let the bitchin' missus cloud one's judgement. If one absolutely MUST be assured of quality product and prompt delivery, there's a premium to be paid for that luxury. I think most SD'ers prefer to take their chances, save some $$$, and take the inevitable losses in stride.

I hope someone who has some eyecare experience can help me out with this one. I ordered glasses through zenni yesterday. I have a very strong perscription. The frame that I selected was half rim. I receieved an email from zenni that says the following. "Before we could process your order, we need to clarify something. Your glasses # 3914 with 1.61 high index lens will be thick if processed with half rim frame, due to your strong prescription." I chose the 1.61 thinking that it would greatly reduce the thickness. I emailed back and asked if I opted for the 1.67 would that make a huge difference in the thickness of the lense? Just wondering if anyone has any input on what I should do here. I potentially have another frame picked out but, I was just going to use those as another backup 2nd pair.

1.67 high index will be thinner but with your high sphere power combined with you high cylinder power you cant expect it to be super thin. as far as the half rim frame, i dont see what would make it thicker than with anyother frame.
I think the half-rim frame would tend to emphasize the thickness of the lens because of the lack of frame.

We've been using Zenni Optical for around 2-3 years now and never had a single issue until this last order. The order was placed on 10/16/2008 and it still has not yet been received. We have had orders take two weeks to receive before but this one is going into the fourth week!
I have sent four email messages (starting last week) and have yet to receive a single reply. I even tried calling Zenni Optical by phone three times a day over the last two weeks using both provided numbers and have never once reached a customer service agent. The toll free number picks up and informs you a representative will answer your call shortly in the order it was received but then after a short pause a message comes back on telling you to leave a message, then the system transfers you to a message box, which is full and tells you good bye and hangs up on you. The other number provided in emails messages is continually busy.
This was likely my very last order from Zenni Optical as I'm now very skeptical of ordering from them because they don't answer emails, they hide behind a phone system they know doesn't work, which leaves the customer with basically NO CUSTOMER SERVICE.
The end result for me is a crabby wife (saying it nicely here), no glasses, and $45 down the drain...
BUYER BEWARE!!!!
I've had the same problem, but they sent this e-mail to me today:
Dear Mr. X,
Your order is back on track!
We at Zenni Optical pride ourselves in the speed with which we deliver to our customers. Unfortunately, one of our shipments was delayed by Customs due to a bureaucratic oversight.
Your order XXXXXX was part of that shipment. That shipment has now been released and we are working extra hours to get your order to you as soon as possible. We plan to ship all orders within the next 48 hours; you should receive your order a few business days thereafter.
Please expect a subsequent email with your tracking number in the next few days.
Sincerely,
Zenni Optical Customer Service
Just ordered about 12 hours ago but still no confirmation email is that normal for them?

I just received my pair of glasses 13 days from the date of order. Good quality and great price. The lenses at Costco would have cost twice as much as the lens and frame I got from Zenni.
Now I can go return the frames I bought for $150 and use the extra $110 savings for something else.
One thing I disliked was the clip-on sunshades that came with my order (also ordered an extra pair thinking it was a good deal). Sounded like a good idea but they don't work for me after adjusting the glasses to fit my head. The clip-ons pop off and the screws on them will scratch the lenses if you're not careful.

My two cents...I've had great service & good deals from optical4less.com.
I just matched up a lot of the websites recommended in this thread and (the good news is that) optical4less.com has good products and options, but (the bad news is that) it is by far the most expensive of the group. My selections ranged in price from $227 to $447! This is the boutique of the online glasses sites.
The other three or four websites are cheaper but may not offer all the options I want at one time: these include: 1) high index (1.67); 2) progressive: 3) transition or polarized.

Wanted to post a review of my purchase at lbweyewear.com. I ordered 2 pairs, total was $43. One pair is PERFECT, I'm going to return the other cuz the frame is too wide but the lenses on both pairs were great! I ordered on the 4th, got my order on the 14th.
Definately a positive experience! I will tell everyone I know who wears glasses to use LBW!
I saved big $ with this thread, thanks to all who contributed! :bounce:

The savings is under $100 vs my costco, assuming 2 years life span $50/year is worth less headaches to me.

I have a few questions I was hoping an eye care professional may be willing to answer for me. I will rep all reasonable responses.
I am interested in ordering sunglasses from Zenni (80% gray tint)
I would like to order 1.67 lenses since my script is strong enough to warrant it (OD -6 , OS -5.5) I also have astigmatism and will provide my numbers for Axis and Cyl in the event that would change your answers to any of my questions.
A few issues / questions:
1. My PD is 57.5 according to my optician (OD 28 + LS 29.5). Zenni only offers whole numbers. Is it better to round up to 58 or down to 57?
2. My measurements taken by an optical professional indicate an OC Height (15.0 for both OD and OS). Zenni does not have a space to enter this. Is this something important enough that I would have a problem should they not have this info? I suppose I could add it in a comment field (if they have one), but I don't know if they would even take it into account.
3. My script indicates "V.D. = 10 mm" Same question as above regarding this.
4. Do sunglasses benefit from AR coating? I would think, yes, but read on to see my point of doubt.
5. When I attempt to add my selection to my cart, I get this error message: "You cannot add tint to a photochromatic, 1.61, or 1.67 lens" What is up with this? I can fool it into adding it to my cart if I change the lens type before I add it into the cart, then after it is in the cart, I can go back and edit the cart to change it to 1.67 -- then it is showing in my cart with the tint. But could it really be true that tint is not possible on anything but standard lenses (1.57)? I can also fool it entering the order into my cart without AR, then going back to edit the cart to add AR in --- which casts some doubt in my mind in regard to my question #4. There is clearly a glitch somewhere, but I am trying to figure out where, as I don't want to place an order for something that is impossible.
6. This question is for anyone with Zenni experience. For those who have gone through the ordering / online checkout process -- is it possible to to partial payment to one cc and the rest of the payment to another cc? (I am asking this due to FSA needs.)

I have a few questions I was hoping an eye care professional may be willing to answer for me...I'm no professional, but Zenni is pretty good about answering pre-sales questions via email. Also, if you try to order something they can't or won't do (like the tint issue), they'll contact you to clarify before actually making your glasses. I suspect they have a different outsourced lab for the high index lenses, and that may be why they won't tint them.

i have a serious question. if u wear ur glasses everyday as opposed to wearing it once in a while, does it make ur vision worst?
i have a serious question. if u wear ur glasses everyday as opposed to wearing it once in a while, does it make ur vision worst?
i don't think there's a 100% answer to that question. I hear stories from both sides. what i have experienced is that i started wearing glasses in about 1990 (yes, i'm old), started out at a -0.75 rx. i try to wear my glasses only for distance, driving. my current rx is -1.75, and has been that way for 2-3yrs. i still try to wear my glasses only for reading at a distance. wifey on the other hand started wearing glasses in 2000, at -1.0 rx, and wears her glasses/contacts fulltime everyday. her current rx is -2.0 and has worsened over the past year.
I have heard of people who say they wore their glasses daily and eventually, didnt have to wear them again! (they had very slight rx - like -.25 or so)
BUT, she does read a lot more than i do (i like picture books personally : ). and that could contribute to her eyes having more strain.
SO i dont think there is any studies on this to say one way or another. just individual preference.

Not sure about answer to the rest of your ?'s but my prescription astigmatism is a lot worse than yours (requires extra 'X' charge in both eyes) & the 1.61 index lens came out okay. In fact I just ordered 2 pairs from them this weekend. They are very good @ answering questions but you have to give them time. I remember they actually pointed out a mistake/discrepancy in my prescription written out incorrectly by my ophthalmologist last year for me to confirm & correct with the optician before submitting order.

I'm new here but hoping that someone can answer a question or two. I'm interested in ordering from Zenni. My contact prescription (yes, I know I can't use that to order glasses) is -4.75 and -5.25. I like 1/2 rim frames, and I'm wondering if the 1.57 lenses would be too thick. Thanks for any help!

I just asked my eye doc about these OL stores and she said that we have to be very careful since overseas manufacturers don't usually follow the US's stringent regulations to prevent major damage if/when they break/crack. I'd love to try one of these if I was confident that they were safe. Awesome thread!

I wish any of these online places had a decent selection of 46mm frames. I keep finding $200-300+ frames in stores, but try to find a cheap frame in that size is near impossible, even worse if you want included clip ons. I've seen better selections in kids eyewear (which are even half the price of their adult counterparts) but the arms are usually too short. Such a pain. It is amazing to see a pair of revolutions in kids and adult sizes that are the same exact model down to polarized magnetic clip ons yet are half the price. Just goes to show the huge markup. Not like kids are actually putting out for their own glasses.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to find some glasses. I'm looking for something like the ones in this pic. Round rimless frames. I can't seem to find any. Thanks.

I just saw your message, and looking at the prescription - your mom has been ordred Bi-focal lenses.
Also as you said there are two very very different prescptions she has got for computer and regular wear.
There is good info on their website @ http://www.zennioptical.com/cart/pages.php?pageid=16
Please make sure that you have spoken with their CSRs and understood how to transfer it to their ordering page.

For clarification, what was your optician/optometrist referring to? Did she mean that "if your cheap Chinese glasses get hit with a rock the lenses may shatter and pierce your eyeball with a thousand shards of leaded glass"? Or was she talking about the frames? And aren't all frames pretty much made in China anyway? So are most lenses, I think. They may be ground and polished to the correct prescription on-site, but pretty sure the source material originates in Asia somewhere. Was your doc suggesting that the materials used by online dispensaries are inferior in some way, or that they are "leftovers" from what gets shipped to the US?
I guess what I'm wondering is if she actually gave you a specific and legitimate reason for being ware, or if she was just trying to be vaguely discouraging.

I think she's just ignorant. There are brittle plastic lenses, but those are the American standard. The tougher lenses are the polycarbonate lenses, and those are the Zenni standard lenses.
(I think I'm right, but I could be wrong)

I received my order from Zenni Optical exactly 31 days after placing the order.
They told me they put a "rush" on my order. The glasses shipped from a lab in China to their office in California.
The glasses are OK, but waiting a month was not OK.

Try lbweyewear.com. I got my glasses 10 days after placing the order. I kept one pair which was perfect and returned another because the frame was too wide. The only negative thing I can say about them is when you return glasses they only give you a 50% refund. They are based in San Francisco FYI.

Try lbweyewear.com. ... I kept one pair which was perfect and returned another because the frame was too wide. The only negative thing I can say about them is when you return glasses they only give you a 50% refund. ....
I don't think it is negative that they only give you a 50% refund on your glasses because "the frame was too wide."
They do state clearly on their guarantee:
*************
"In any case if the information was entered incorrectly by the customer or given incorrectly by their doctors or opticians we still give our customers the policy to return their eyeglasses for a 50% off the price return within a 30 days period.
...
Return Policy
We also offer a 100% satisfied guarantee with our products, if in any case you are not satisfied with the product style we offer a 50% return policy, no questions ask. Return must be made within 30 days after the order is received."
***************
Assuming that the frames they gave you were as wide as they advertised and not completely different from what you could have expected, then it is the same as if you had given them the wrong prescription, and I don't think it is fair to expect them to eat the cost of the order because a customer gave them the wrong prescription, or had the glasses ordered for a frame that the customer later realizes is too big.
Unlike most other merchandise, it's highly unlikely that they can "refurbish" these and resell them later. They will have to pay for the mistakes of their customers. I think it's perfectly fair (and maybe even generous) for them to split the cost with the customer 50-50.
Now, if the glasses were unacceptable because of quality issues or an incorrectly set prescription -- that's another story, and I think they should offer a free replacement.
