I measured the PD myself for the eyeglasses I got online, and they are noticeably better than the ones I got from pearl vision.

I just got in my second order this week and I am very satisfied once again. Prices are great of course. Shipping the first time (Feb) took 3+ weeks, but that was expected considering the shipping distance. This time shipping was very quick and short, it came from California? My flex spending has accepted my receipts both times, making it even better. The glasses I have now are so light I cant even tell I have them on.

Sorry...forgot to mention this is with Zenni! :)

For a few minutes Ill add a pic of me in my "work" glasses. These things are nerdy as hell but indestructible how for how hard I am on them! Im amazed they have lasted since Feb. No, these arent the lighter ones but still I love em.

Need more pics of the work glasses and non-work glasses to verify how good they are.

got my pair of glasses from lbweyewear and intially i was impressed, impressed that it came so quickly and that it fits my head. After wearing it for a minute or 2 i noticed that while looking at text it was not very clear. Now i have to deal with their customer support and see if i can get a refund or a new pair of glasses.

Ordered from LBW on the 10th and just got the email on the 15th that they have shipped, so I am happy with the speed of the service...will report later when they arrive. 19.48 total price including the shipping hard to argue with unless they are complete junk, we shall soon see if we can see :)

I ordered from zenni optical back in August, I got my glasses about a week later, and I have to say, they have been FANTASTIC!

I'm literally kicking myself for spending $200+ on ONE pair of glasses when I can get two pair for about $20.

Having designer frames or any of that nonsense is definitely not important to me. I wear contacts during the day, but when I get home from work and on the weekends, I give my eyes a rest and wear my glasses, and they've been great.

I ordered 4 pairs of glasses from Zenni Optical last month, first time ordering glasses online. Two pairs of silver framed eyeglasses in similar styles, and 2 other frames I had made into prescription sunglasses. The frames I picked for the sunglasses are too small, but that's my fault for not paying attention to the frame size. The prescription is perfect - I can see perfectly out of all 4 pairs. Took about 2 weeks to arrive. $50 for 4 pairs of glasses shipped was phenomenal. Whenever I buy glasses locally it costs around $200-350 per pair before insurance. It just comes down to getting your eye exam/prescription from a local optometrist (make sure they give you the "PD-Pupillary Distance") then plugging the info in online. They'll even take expired prescriptions - great if yours doesn't change much year after year.

This $8 frame in silver is my favorite. Very shiny and nice quality, I adjusted it to fit my face with no trouble:

You should wear them for a while to let your eyes adjust before you blame the glasses. Even if the 'script is the same, variation between individual lenses can take some adjustment.

I and a bunch of friends have ordered from Zenni optical approx 9 times in the last year. Always great quality. Out of the 27 pairs I have ordered, only ONE pair seemed off on the prescription. Every other pair I have ordered and my friends have been great. Yes 27 pairs of glasses is alot, but its between me and dd. I've ordered prescription sunglasses also, they're great. Bifocals too. Paid less for all 27 prs than for one pair at LensCrft. Can't complain!

I've had good experiences with Zenni as well. I bought a pair in early '08 and they're my favorite glasses. They've held up really well despite the abuse I've given them, but recently one of the nose pads broke off. I was resigned to buying another pair, but I gave their customer service a call just in case. I had to leave a message, so I explained the problem and gave the order number. I didn't have high hopes for any kind of response, so I was surprised to receive an email a few days later stating that my nosepads were in the mail. A couple days after that, I received a kit with a small eyeglass screwdriver and three pairs of nosepads (and the nosepads actually fit). I'll use Zenni again.

Update LBW: Got them on the 20th, so ten days from order to in-hand is pretty nice. Frames and lenses are decent, sturdy, prescription seems right, and quite a nice surprise for a 19.48 pair of glasses as I was really expecting junk for that price. These are on-par with any glasses I have ever bought from the usual retail stores.

Sounds like possibly you got your pd wrong. What was your pd that you used? If it wasn't close to 63 most likely it was wrong. Most people are within a few mm of 63.

An easy way to get your PD done for free by your eye doctor is to pop in and say your work is getting you protective glasses and they need your PD on top of your prescription. They'll usually give it to you no problem. I had called frames direct to actually drop coin on a pair of glasses, and that was the advice she gave me. Worked easily for me.

Tough to find decent smaller frames with clip on sunnies. Finally found a pair of 47mm ones at Zenni. Will be interesting to see how they compare to the Armani ones I got at Frames Direct for $300. Though at the eye shop, even with my Aetna discount, it would've been $450. So that was a plus at least. Must've tried on frames at five different shops, and one thing I noticed is those Armanis just felt nicer than the others, Maybe not a couple hundred more worth though. Will be a nice comparison when they both arrive.

The pd I have is 65, which I got from my optometrist. I just checked it myself and it looks right.

Well that's probably not your problem. I've found that PD has to be really out of whack for it to be noticeable for most glasses. When I first started ordering glasses online I measured myself and got 69mm and never had any problems with the glasses I got. Later I had my uncle who is an Optician check it for me and he said it was 62mm so since then I've been using that measurement and can't discern a difference in the glasses I've gotten with that measurement.

just got my first pair from zenni. the prescription looks right. but, i'm thinking the PD is somewhat off because my eyes seem to be focusing towards the the inside (cross eyed look?) when i'm looking at things. the PD i gave them is is from the optometrist ... any way of checking the PD on the glasses?

I just came across this website and I thought I would share. I was able to order a 'back up' pair for my daughter for $8.00 plus $4.95 shipping. They have some that are very stylish and others that are more expensive. Great if you have kids who wear and break glasses often!

Zenni is pretty decent and we end up discussing them on these boards about once a month or so. I have a couple of pair from them and my wife has a couple as well. The lenses are good but the frames are pretty cheap and break easily (they won't take much abuse). Our prescriptions have always been spot-on perfect.

There are a plethora of great cheap eyeglasses retailers and you can find all kinds of reviews, details, info, links, and even some coupon codes at Ira's blog site: http://www.glassyeyes.com -- The info there is excellent and the listserv/forum/group thing on that site is very friendly and helpful.

If you are willing to venture into the 20-30$ per pair range you will find some much better frames from other places. Still, especially for prescription sunglasses, Zenni is very good.

So these are fully prescribed eye glasses? Does that mean you have to know exactly what type of lenses you need? I'm guessing they have certain choices if you have astigmatism, too?
My glasses are $150 and are by Lacoste, which I thought was pretty cheap considering I've seen other ones run for a lot more. But is it possible I am paying for the brand only, and not quality?

Do we have to "walmart" everything?

Part of the cost of obtaining glasses is the service we get. Part of the reason we are left with mostly poor service stores is because we used to go to the store with excellent service (that costs more) and obtain the product knowledge we needed and then instead of completing the purchase there... we walked next door to the "minimum wage" store to complete the purchase.... thus driving the other stores out of business.

So let's drive all the "good" eye doctors out of business as we strive to save a few bucks and eventually we'll bring down the quality of that service to the level we now have with department stores.

Sure glasses cost a ton of money at the eye doctor but that's only because we want to buy some stupid $200+ frames with some idiots name on the side so tiny you cannot even see it.

The lenses are the cheapest part anyway as long as you do not fall for all that "add-on" crap.

Remember this.... eventually we'll all lose what little good quality jobs are left and there will be nothing left but minimum wage crap jobs and we'll all be shopping at Walmart wondering why 30 hours at near minimum wage with no benefits is now considered full time and how it takes 2+ people to make the same relative wage as we used to get with one person.

We have to know when we have gone too far.... $8 lenses has gone too far IMHO.

What service? Usually a med-school wannabe who screwed up somewhere who messes up the prescription anyway...is this better? is this better? One or two?...can't wait till somebody sells a home machine that can do the same thing for pennies...then they want you to buy their overpriced crap made in the same factory as the mail-orders.

I've never seen a prescription written on a frame... That's probably the size of the frame: 44mm = width of eye area, 18mm = width of nose area. Somewhere on the arm area, you may find the length of the arm as well. You can use these as a guide for the size of the frame you need to buy, but for the actual lens, you still need to find the prescription from the doc.

No, those numbers might be some size measurement or model number for the frame.

You'll want to get the written prescription from the doctor that did the eye exam. The office will gladly do it for you if you ask. You'll also want to ask them his "PD" (the distance between his pupils.) Usually the technician measures this. It's important to be correct and often it is NOT written on the prescription.

Especially for children you'll want to make sure the frame size is appropriate. For mine, I measured (in millimeters) my old glasses for a comparison when shopping online. Maybe other's here will have a good suggestion for measuring.

Count me in as another that tried buying glasses online and loved it. I bought from www.eyebuydirect.com, glasses came in about 2 weeks, and prescription (the most important part, obviously) was spot-on. I think I paid $25 total, and got a 25% discount from a code I found on glassyeyes.com (where I first learned about buying glasses online). I know there's no substitute for being able to try on a pair of frames, but when people are paying $400+ from B&Ms, I think it's worth a shot for the price. I originally got these as backup/disposable glasses to supplement my older (and MUCH more expensive) glasses, and I actually wear the cheap ones every day, and get a lot of compliments on them as well. Are they the most well-made glasses ever? No. But if I break them or lose them, I'm out $25, not $400. I'm going to buy a few more pairs, just because I can. Try it out - and check glassyeyes blog for discount codes!

Relax noone us going to put the overpriced establishments out of business. We still need to go to them for eye exams so we can get our prescriptions and buy our frames cheaper online.
If they did not over inflate their frame and lense prices they wouldn't be losing business.Have you tried buying frame from a shop latley? It's not just the fancy brand name ones that cost alot.it's all of them and when you have multiple glass wearers in a family you have to shop around and go with the establishment that gives you more for your hard earned dollar.

I get compliments on my frames constantly including from my eye doctor and none of them believe me when I tell them how little they cost.

There is some truth there. I went to my optometrist that I hadn't been to in 7 years. My previous pair of glasses lasted that long just fine. I decided to get a pair of reading glasses and a pair of driving/watching tv glasses, both using the same frame. The 2 pair of glasses cost me $250, so they were not expensive frames. In 6 months I went through 3 frames, specifically the spring loaded temples breaking.

I gave them multiple chances to fix things, and they were very nice about it after I was persistent in getting the frames replaced.

I finally gave up and ordered 2 sets of glasses from zenni optical. They have someone here in the states that handles the orders, but the glasses ship directly from Hongkong. They responded immediately with a couple of questions about the prescription, as I have one that's a bit unusual. After confirming the prescription with them, I had to wait about 2 weeks for the glasses. I got one pair with full titanium frames and another with the cheap $8 glasses. There was an upcharge for 1 lens due to prescription strength. Total was $40 for 2 pairs of glasses.

The quality of these were excellent. Unfortunately, I will only be going to optometrists for prescriptions now.

Don't worry, the more we buy from China, the more we drive up their standard (and therefore cost) of living. As their cost of living increases, their competitiveness decreases. Already they are outsourcing from 'urban' to 'rural' (cheaper) areas of China, and to other places such as Vietnam.

Of course the flip side of this coin is that our standard living must decrease. Not a pleasant thought but it necessarily must happen... deep down inside we all know that our excessive and wasteful lifestyles can't continue indefinitely.

Eventually we'll meet somewhere in the middle.

People are people, not charities. It's not our job to pay $300 for a $8 pair of glasses so someone else can get ahead. If the $8 glasses are just as good as the $300 glasses, you're an idiot for spending $300 IMO. If the optometrists also want to be eyewear salespeople, they need to be competitive just like any other business.

Best reply in this thread. :applause:

The idea of paying $250 or $300 for a pair of glasses (when these are FANTASTIC, and just as good) is most certainly one of the stupidest propositions I've read on SD.

anyone ever use 39dollarglasses to re-lense your frames? i really like the oakley gasket frames in the brown tortoise finish. found some on ebay a few weeks ago for $50. for $70+ shipping, it seems like a pretty good deal. i would have $120+ into these.

I go to a semi-pricey place just because that's the cheapest place I could find that accepts my insurance. My mom goes to America's Best where you get two complete pairs and an eye exam for like $70 or $100. We both see the same doctor (I guess he works at both places) except I (and my insurance company) get charged a lot more. So I agree - more expensive does not always equal better or worth the huge difference. I love the Nautica frames I got last year, but my doc no longer stocks them because they are last year's style. Sometimes the cheaper sites will offer last year's styles at a huge discount. Just like many discount stores who get last year popular toy/dress, etc and sell it for way less than it would have cost new. If I can get last year's frames for half (or less) of what they would have cost me a year ago, why not?

I have purchased 3 pairs of glasses from Zenni. Gotten many, many compliments. My daughter's wire rim did break after 3 months, but both of our plastic frames have really held up. The eye doctor at Walmart had no problem with me ordering glasses online instead of buying from him. Walmart was very helpful to give me all of the measurements I would need to place my order. I was told by a specialist at JcPenney optical that the non-glare coating is a waste on kids glasses. The glare affects adults as they have to drive at night with oncoming headlights. It is an added expense and makes the lenses much more scratchable.
The optical center where we get our eyes examined have been great about any adjustments needed. On my daughter's last pair, I boiled some water and bent the arms myself to fit her face better. We are so happy with our unique, inexpensive glasses.

I spend $300+ on Flexon frames at a retail store (DOC), within 9 months, the anti-glare stuff started to rub off.. it's AWFUL!

I spend $8 on Zenni frames, got so so so so many compliments! The frame did break after a year but they were only $8 and I wore them every day! With 4 kids, I've had much more expensive glasses break in 1/4 of the time!

I'm getting ready purchase another pair. I love the flexibility to try a style that I might not if I was paying more for them!!

Do we have to "walmart" everything?

Big whoop. We live in a capitalist country which does a decent job of allocating resources. If consumers feel like they need costly specialized eye doctors, there will always be one. Ever heard of the phrase "money talks"?

At the current state, I'd say eyeglasses and opticians were operating as cartels more than anything. Everyone has been forced to purchase buy these overpriced eyeglasses because there is no other option, until these cheaper methods starting popping up to force competition.

That "specialist" at JCPenney optical is completely wrong (as usual). Glare effects children just as much as adults. The anti-reflective coating improves the quality of vision in multiple lighting conditions (including during the daytime in sunlight). If you can afford to spend the extra money, the anti-reflective coating will improve your childs vision.

As to the anti-reflective coating making the lenses more scratchable, that all depends on the type of coating. The higher end coatings actually provide an added layer of scratch-resistence to the lenses.

Just received a pair of glasses from eyebuydirect.com. I am functionally blind without glasses, and desperately needed a pair of backup glasses that wasn't scratched and beat up. Three times I've had my glasses break on vacation! My last glasses from the optometrist cost around $300. Very good quality, work well. But I didn't want to spend $300 for a backup pair I might never wear. I got a pair from eyebuydirect.com for $80 after discount (I have a powerful prescription). I slipped them on, I could read near and see far so they will function fine as backups. However, the frame ($35 at eyebuydirect) is really cheap. I've seen better frames on $10 sunglasses. I would not recommend for 24x7 wear like I do (OK, make that 16x7), but good for my purposes.

Also, when buying from eyebuydirect.com, watch out at the end of checkout when they automatically add on another 3% for buySafe bond (just uncheck the box).

I just cant see buying glasses online.. I buy shoes, pants, shirts, belts etc.. but glasses and suits are too much in my opinion

Yeah, there is the limitation of not being able to try it on, but if you currently have a pair of glasses that you like, you can measure them and use that size as a baseline when buying glasses online. Having a baseline is important otherwise you will end up with some random glasses that may or may not fit/suit you.

Really? Everywhere I've been they said no don't. It makes it harder to clean, it cant really be cleaned by swiping it with your tshirt. I guess I'll order one with anti glare (cheap one) and a nice one with out with Photo chromatic (some glasses don't have this option on zanni? ) (Cheaper to just order the sunglasses add on! )

Ordered frame #7306 from Zenni Optical on 02/15/10, I will be sure to post my experience and possibly a picture of them when they come in.

Frame #7306 w/1.57 lenses: $8.00
AR coating: +$4.95 <<< not available for tint (sunglasses)
80% Gray tint: +$4.95
Shipping: +$4.95

$22.85 shipped to Columbus, Ohio.

OD -4.25/0.50/75
OS -4.25/0.75/75
PD 63

Update #1: Received an email from Zenni on Thursday 02/18/10. They said that you can't have tint + AR coating, and that I can choose one or the other. They also said they would refund the difference. I am glad they emailed me, but better website design would have prevented me from selecting both in the first place.

Update #2: Credit for $4.95 from Zenni for the AR coating received 02/24/10, bringing total cost down to $17.90 shipped.

Update #3: Received my sunglasses on 03/05/10. I figure they did not work on them until 02/22/10, so 2 weeks from order to received is about right. I am very satisfied with my purchase and I noticed that they have redesigned their website. Fit is great, the prescription is perfect. I am not used to wearing sunglasses, 80% is pretty dark.

I have vision insurance so do I just go to a local Walmart (vison center) and get an eye exam, and get the Rx and order online through one of these vendors? Are eyeglasses in store really that expensive? I would appreciate a little help, will rep of course :)

I've been ordering from Zenni for the past three years and have been very happy with their glasses. It takes typically about 2 weeks to get them but they've been very good. I have now several friends who have also order from Zenni and have been very satisfied. I've not had any issues with customer service. My nephew broke his glasses a couple of weeks after getting them and when I called customer service, they sent me a new frame (the lenses were fine) for free. The woman at customer service was very nice, friendly, spoke English, and said that since it was only a couple of weeks since we had them, they'll just simply replace the frames with no charge.

Glasses improve the quality of your life!
You can go anywhere that your vision insurance accepts to get an exam. Then you ask for a copy of the prescription. You can see the frames at minimum cost around $100 + lenses + addon= $300 or so

Plug in the info into zenni, ask us if you need help, choose the right frame/addons
pay 90% less!

That is all you need to do. Go to doc, get Rx then order online for FAR better prices. Make sure to ask your doc to give you your PD when you go. You will need it to order, but it is not something they routinely give you. I have ordered from both Zenni and Eyebuydirect and have had good results with both.

Doing progressives online does seem to be a little more tricky. You need to make sure the measurements on the glasses you're buying are going to fit your face well. There is a certain amount of chance you're taking that the bifocal portion won't be too high for you or too low. Saying that, I'd say buy a cheap pair and if you're satisfied you can go from there. Progressives are one area that you can really save a ton of money by buying online but at the same time are taking a little more risk. My dad bought a pair of non-progressive bifocals and the bifocal started a little lower than his last glasses. After a week or so he was used to them though. YMMV I guess.

Taken from: http://ezinearticles.com/?Understanding-Your-Eyeglass-Prescription&id=473762

The last number need to complete an eyeglass prescription and fabricate a new pair of eyeglasses is the pupillary distance otherwise know as known as "PD". It is the distance, in millimeters, between the centers of the pupils in your eyes, for example 62.

You can measure it on your own, but it is less accurate.

Put Zenni glasses on, look in mirror to see if level, pay attention to any discomfort from too much pressure on either nose pad and gently bend the nose piece(s) as needed in order to "level" and/or decrease pressure.

Just tell them to do it. Federal law requires them to give you this with a full prescription. It's hard for them to argue if you don't bother to 'discuss' reasons or excuses. I just say to make sure the PD is written there.

You should check to see if it's "express" for delivery within the US or "express" delivery from their lab in Asian to the US.

If it's "express" delivery within the US, then it'll get to you about a day or two sooner (since they ship the glasses from San Rafael, CA). However, it'll still take a while to get the glasses from the lab in Asia.

If it's "express" delivery from Asia, then it should be faster, but you should check with Zenni themselves to see how fast.. =/

I've bought some glasses from Coastal Contacts and I got them within a week of ordering. I ordered them on a Saturday and they shipped on Tuesday, and showed up at my house on Thursday. According to the tracking information I got from them, Coastal Contacts shipped the glasses via Priority Mail.

I called them and they finally talked to me because they could see my order (there's like an hour delay).

Express means the lab in HK ships directly to you, instead of lab shipping to Zenni and then Zenni to you.

I went with that for the $9, even though it's only going to save a few day.

I'm still hunting for a faster cheap solution but I don't think I am going to find it.

My eyes are killing me. Thank goodness for the slickdeals "midnight" theme, wish more sites had it.

Eyebuydirect. Warning!

Avoid Eyebuydirect. I order 2 pairs from them on a SD, which was not quite so slick when I got down ordering the special 2 pairs discount and then they arrived with the wrong prescription so I had to pay to return them with tracking for a refund, which they did not process until I got my credit card company involved, 3 months of calling, waiting and faxing, etc. Then the credited my account so it cost me 1/2 the cost of the glasses to have no glasses at all.

Eyebuydirect customer service is very difficult to reach and then even though they had the glasses chose not to do a refund until the charge back got processed.

I will try Zenni or one of the others.

Avoid Eyebuydirect!

If you have had a good experience with them great, I found them to be terrible. The two pairs did not even have the same prescription in them, even though they were supposed to be the same. Nice frames though.

My two pairs from EyeBuyDirect have been just fine (though the one's frame is a little bit too small for my face). Planning on returning that pair for a refund and will probably get one at Coastal Contacts instead (though their return policy isn't as good as EBD's).

Wow coastalcontacts must make & ship from within usa, they are promising 4/16 for glasses

Plus they have $7 frames I can live with.

They claim to include antiglare coat, is that true?

Wish they had a working code right now but I can live with $15 shipped if I get it this week.

My favorite excuse given by an optical store was from Lansing Ophthalmology in Lansing MI who when asked for it said that they "cannot release that for legal reasons". I tried to press her on how that would play out, what kinds of conditions would trigger legal problems due to simply providing a number but she couldn't elaborate. For decades I got glasses and I don't think the even bothered to check for pupil distance so I assume having someone with good eyes and a ruler check it for you would work.

Oh, and Lansing Ophthalmology is a rip-off. Extremely high prices and really impressive shop, really crappy glasses. The frames I bought from them the finish began wearing off within a week of purchase and then a week ago the frame broke at a seam. I'll never go there again.
The frames I got from Zenni were much better frames and the glasses cost me less than $25 to my door.

Wow the $9 express from Zenni was totally worth it.

Instead of 16-21 days like the $5 charge, I got them FOUR days later, just now, via DHL right from China!

They beat the Coastal Contacts order!

Checking them out now...

I don't think there is any anti-glare coat on these like I paid the extra $5 for :(

ah wait, maybe they do have anti-glare, I remember a review said the light shows up green on the outside, I shown a bright led light against the front and they turn green (but you can't see green from the inside)

I somehow did pretty good on this order for not being able to try on the frames directly

one of my order was a frameless design, it's a shame they have to put the posts into the lenses themselves, my peripheral vision sees them and it's bothersome

cool thanks for posting, I've been using LBW but I think I'll try zenni next

Note that to get express, you have to call them AFTER you place the order, there is no way to upgrade the shipping online. Then they make you wait an HOUR after the order was placed because they cannot see it for the first hour. If you use a one-time CC, you'll need another for the $9 charge. ($14 total shipping)

The case they put it in is cheap, and like the reviews say, they come with little dust on the lenses, but they also give you a nice cloth, so I just cleaned them. But at least these are ultra-lightweight.

Frame is very very cheap. My Coastal Contacts order comes tomorrow supposedly so I will compare the two methods then.

I swear the lens height on one of these is completely wrong compared to what I ordered, I have to go double check but I can't imagine ordering something so shallow, I purposely looked for tall lenses because these are for reading/computer.

Yay my computer screen is no longer blurry! And not overly sharp like when I use my outdoor glasses!

I won't be ordering frameless again - the half frame is just fine and actually a better design I think.

Note that you can order as many pairs as you want for the $14 shipping, so take your time and get a few if you want to try variety. I was in a rush which was a mistake.

Coastal Contacts order arrived and I have to admit I like it better than the fancy Zenni frames!

The do indeed come with free anti-glare coat, I didn't pay for any extra and it glows green with bright led light.

Comes with a much better case, and even a soft felt bag for them.

Even though it's a full frame, it's the right size for my face so I barely see the frame and don't mind. I think I'll be wearing these far more than the Zenni's!

I won't win any fashion awards but they were literally only $7 to my door in 5 days!

Definitely would recommend coastal over Zenni if they have the frame you can live with.

Phew! this is a long thread. I've just had time to read a few pages.

Are people using the sites in the OP just for reading glasses or single-vision lenses? I used single vision lenses for distance and separate glasses for computer until a couple of years ago. Finally I got an Rx for progressive lenses which are good for distance, reading and computer use. Unfortunately, I lost the glasses two days ago. I'm trying to make do with the old glasses for the moment but it's frustrating. I had an eye exam in Feb and got a pair of frames only covered by my insurance. There wasn't enough in the materials fee to cover lenses. I went to Costco with them yesterday and they said they couldn't use those frames because of the style -- there's a cutout at the side where they said the lens would have to be specially shaped. So at Costco, I would have to use one of their frames. Total cost would be about $240 for frames, progressive lenses with AR and anti-scratch coatings.

I've never bought glasses online before but am really short of cash as I've been unemployed over a year. Are the online places OK for glasses with progressive lenses and which one would you recommend?

I've bought seven pairs of glasses from eyebuydirect.com and have been very happy with all of them. The first four were single vision lenses and I loved being able to match my eyewear to my wardrobe. However the need for progressives won out, and I finally broke down and bought 2 pairs to replace my super expensive ones I bought from the eye doctor (which I dropped on the concrete floor at Sam's Club and chipped). I got TWO pairs of progressive lenses with scratch coating, UV coating and anti-reflective coating for just $147.76! I absolutely LOVE both pairs. I also had a pair of single vision lenses sent to my son in another state, and he was tickled pink! I've recommended this website to everyone I know. I love it!

I've read a lot of this thread at various times ... don't remember seeing this addressed. I have a strong prescription and need the high-index lenses. Best I've seen online after checking out a bunch of places is close to $80 and it goes up from there. Has anyone gotten glasses with high-index lenses for much less than that? I understand those cost more to make, but that amount of $$ makes the risk of ordering online more significant to me, especially since few frames end up looking decent on me (hey, my face needs all the help it can get, lol).

just got some new glasses from 39dollarglasses.com and they are excellent. i just wished i had measured my own pd before i ordered. it seems like the optometrist made a difference of 7 than my own measurements. really strange and annoying but the glasses are perfect prescription, solid build quality, and the included case and screwdriver which is nice. the pd problem is a big annoyance tho considering the significant difference in measurement. btw i got these glasses in a total of 5 days.

39Dollarglasses.com is REAL good. I have bought from them 3 times; everytime perfect. I ordered glasses and recieved them in 5 days, Made in New Jersey USA. They also send me coupons. I made one order from 39 and I put a wrong number in the order box and they recoginized it and sent me an email immediately. GOOD Store

Now I would STRONGLY advise against Zenni, I had a horrible 1st experience with them, 8 weeks with them before I got my glasses. They kept telling me the manufacturer in China was working on the glasses. Zenni just didn't do it for me, do a google search and look at some feedback.

I didn't see your post earlier and I'm sure you have figure something out by now, but figured I would answer anyway, since others may be wondering too.

I was very, very hesitant to order progressives -- especially since it was my first pair ever. I went ahead and took a chance and I love them. I was worried about things not lining up or seeming off but have not had any problems at all.

I will absolutely order the next pair the same way. My husband will be needing glasses (probably progessives) soon and we will be ordering his also.

I had a pair of glasses already so I was able to measure them to compare to the descriptions -- height, width, bow length, etc. For the lenses, I actually marked out the measurements on paper (height & width) then drew in the basic shape to get a pretty good idea of size. It was then pretty easy to compare my current frame to the drawing and know that they were just a bit bigger, smaller, or OMG no way!

If you don't have a pair of glasses to use, go to Wal-Mart and try some on. When you find one that fits pretty well (doesn't matter if it's ugly) write down the numbers on the inside of the bow. It's not brain surgery -- it's a guideline. They are measured in millimeters so a few "numbers" off one way or the other -- especially in lens size isn't going to be a huge difference.

Oh, one other thing. If you are ordering them with the magnetic sunglasses, for $5 each, order a couple spares. You are already paying shipping and when you need another pair of sunglasses, you are gonna have to pay shipping again, so just order a couple extras to begin with! (Of course, not putting them in your pocket and snapping them in half is an option too)

Just wanted to add in another review on buying glasses online. Ive ordered from zenni twice, and lensway once. Zenni took about 1.5 weeks to come the first time and 9 days (ordered on sat, received on Monday). I would say the frames match the price, the first order were cheap plastic frames just to try out the site, second were bendable/memory titanium for about $23 shipped. The second pair were very nice quality (as far as I can tell) . But then I went to the doctor to get my prescription updated, and they changed dramatically, so I had to order another pair. At first I was going to try coastal contacts but realized that the SAME exact pair were available on lensway for (not kidding) about half the price ($70 vs 30). Now I ordered on Saturday, received them in mail mailbox on Tuesday. I also called them 3 times to ask inane questions just to see if anyone would pick up...all 3 times someone picked up and was very courteous. Oh I called zenni twice also, both times someone picked up and was also very polite- just make sure u call after 3pm, they don't seem to pick up in the morning. So if ur interested in coAstal contacts, check lensway to see if they have the same pair. Only drawback is lensway's selection is much more limited.

Oh as for getting the pd, I just asked for it. The lady immediately looked at me and asked if I'm ordering online...awkward lol.

New digital technology for progressive wearers makes it easy to adapt to new glasses. There are many names for this new tech: Free-form, Digital, HD, and Back-surface Rx. I bought a pair of glasses from an online deal here one time, polycarbonate lenses with an anti-reflective coating. The glasses themselves ended up super scratched up with only light classroom use. Really weird because my other pair from the doctor gets used much more heavily when I drive (tossed around and wiped on my shirt) and it is still scratch free after 2 years.

Don't let all this good reviews fool you, I recently received my glasses from Zenni optical, the quality of the frames are horrible. The frames are making sounds when trying to flip out the temples or trying to wear them. I bought the low prices glasses, they are very badly made. The frames are worst than those from dollar stores. The frames are very fragile. I don't recommend buying from such places, I rather spend more $ on a better frames with guarantee. This store will only refund your 50% of your $, and they said all their frames have passed the quality control inspection. When they say this, you can expect how low standard their frame qualities are.

I have bought several different frames from zenni and have found that the quality does vary widely. Expect that the $8 frames are going to be really cheap, but the more expensive frames ($25-$30) are mostly decent in my experience.

When my daughter was 3 we bought expensive glasses from the eye doctor for a lot of $$. They came with a 1 year warranty which we used over and over and over. We were in there at least every month getting parts replaced or adjustments made. I was not comfortable adjusting them myself for fear of breaking them and/or voiding the warranty. There were plenty of times when she was without glasses for a week while waiting for parts to arrive. Much of the time the problems were he own fault, like the time she tried to clean the lenses with her teeth, but those things will happen with a 3 year old. It was a huge hassle.

My other daughter is now 3 and has been using zenni glasses since she was 18 months. Sure, they break, but all glasses will break when toddlers are using them. Because they are cheap enough I bought a couple plus some extra frames. Now when the side piece breaks I can just replace it myself. I also do adjustments myself which saves a ton of trips to the eye doctor. I don't worry about doing this because if I destroy the frame a new one is only $15.

Another benefit of zenni, particularly with kids glasses, is that they if they get lost they are cheap to replace.

The frames are very fragile. I don't recommend buying from such places, I rather spend more $ on a better frames with guarantee. This store will only refund your 50% of your $, and they said all their frames have passed the quality control inspection. When they say this, you can expect how low standard their frame qualities are.

Let me guess. You're an Optometrist? Or maybe a dispensing Optician? Zenni's cheap frames aren't going to equal what you spend $200 on in the store but they're definitely not dollar store quality. I've been wearing a pair for nearly two years and they're still holding up.

I usually wear contacts during the day and eyeglasses in the evenings. Both frames I have purchased from Zenni have been great. These are cheap eyeglasses in price, but their quality certainly isn't cheap. Plus Zenni carries frames that are in style, so that is always a plus.

I have a huge head and usually have trouble finding frames wide enough. My current pair are 52s, but of course there is significant variation between styles/manufacturers.

Anybody else have a similar problem? Comments on the size variety available?

Thanks,

I thought it would take a month, but the date from ordering to delivery was actually less than two weeks.
Quality seems excellent for the price.

10% grey tint is not very noticeable from the outside or looking through the lens
10% yellow tint is actually darker than expected

The $400 pair of glasses I have finally broke (the spring hinge in the right arm broke off) and I figured it was as good a time as any to try buying a pair of glasses online.

Bought 2 pairs ($55 shipped total!) - 1 from Zenni and one from Goggles4u. The Zenni is to see what a 1.57 index looks like with a -6 and -5 sphere and the pair from Goggles4u has a 1.59 polycarbonate lens. Both have the AR coating.

Quick question - my PD was measured at 58.5 (31.5 right, 27.0 left). Is it ok that I rounded up to 59 on my orders since they all wanted a whole number?

That's what I did and what I understand you're supposed to do... but mine was only .5 different between left and right. I don't have any experience in the field but I'd wonder why yours varied so much.

Who knows? It's possible the measurement I was given could have had a bit of error (I accidentally twitched my eye or something?). Then again PD is measured from pupil to pupil. We'll see what happens.

Of course my eyes vary widely as well, here's my script:

Right: -6.00 +2.50 x105
Left: -5.50 +2.00 x060
PD: 58.5

I'm not an optometrist or a dispensing optician. I'm a consumer like everyone else. I'm someone who's been wearing glasses for 20+ years. I do have enough experience to judge what are a good frames, whether they fit, whether they are comfortable, and whether they are acceptable. Even if I'm a new glasses wearer, I don't need to be an optometrist to judge what is good or not. I'm just offering my honest product review. Believe me or not is up to you. I realize that many people like to mock others when they don't like what they hear. I don't think this help others.

My account is blocked for some reason. This is my new one. If it's blocked again, then I understand why.

My glasses from Goggles4u came in today - looks like they win on the manufacturing/shipping time vs Zenni. Review time!

Script: look a couple posts back
Frames: http://goggles4u.com/detail.asp?Pid=39081
Lenses: 1.59 Index Polycarbonate w/ Coatings

I measured my old glasses before ordering these so I could have similar dimensions on my new pair - seems to have worked better than I expected!

Frames are very nice and look exactly as advertised. They fit my face very very well. Never thought of using rectangular lenses but I'm glad I did (I have a very oval face).

Lenses have me completely blown away. They are either as thin or thinner than my old glasses - which had a weaker script! Edges hardly stick out and are most likely just as unnoticeable as my previous pair.

Script for the lenses seems to be pretty much dead on though because I haven't changed my script for over 2 years I'm already getting a headache from the new correction - happens every time and it'll go away.

For the most part these glasses have been everything promised at a fraction of the price at retail. Sure I don't have photochromic lenses, but I can just order another cheap pair of these with a dark tint if I want sunglasses!

fyi.... Just saved 10% at goggles4u with coupon code glassyeyes.

Picked up a rimless pair with polycarbonate lenses and magnetic clip on sunglasses. (http://www.goggles4u.com/detail.asp?Pid=41903#?Pid=41903) Was told to always pick polycarbonate with rimless because of the drilling of the lenses. $42.99 -$4.30 + $4.99 for shipping; $43.68 total. Just lost my cheap zenni pair, so I reordered from them and thought I'd try something new with goggles4u.

My glasses from Zenni came in on Saturday - time to review it!

Frames: http://www.zennioptical.com/#/?q=412021
Lenses: Standard 1.57 Index w/ Coatings
Script: Same as before.

Frames look exactly like the ones on the website - frame is very rugged.

Lenses seem to be dead on regarding the script - there is no different switching between this pair and my Goggles4u pair. 1.57 index lenses are most definitely thicker on the edges than my old $400 pair - I was expecting this. What I was not expecting was that even though the lenses are indeed a bit thicker on the edges, it's hard to tell for the most part.

These glasses will make a great backup pair. I ordered theses from Zenni just to test out the 1.57 index lens to see if it would be acceptable. Now that I know it is I don't have to worry about when I order next. :)

All in all - Zenni and Goggles4U both performed spectacularly. My glasses looked exactly as ordered and at the dimensions that were advertised. Will definitely buy new pairs from both companies in the future.

http://www.zennioptical.com/

They have glasses from $8 - $30. $5.00 more for anti-reflective coating and free uv and scratch coatings. $5 flat shipping for all orders.

The orders usually take about 10-15 days. Special orders can take up to 1 month.

My own personal experience has been good. I have only ordered 2 pairs of glasses from them. I am the only one that wears glasses in my house. Overall the reviews from fellow fatwallet members have been good. It would be nice to setup a poll to see how many people had a good experience and how many people had bad experiences. I read one person brought 11 pairs of glasses from Zenni and didn't have any problems, so I guess that is good news.

Lenses turn back into sand after two weeks.

Lenses turn back into sand after two weeks.

Man, that might be worth it just for that!

In all seriousness, I had a decent experience with the glasses I just ordered from them. I got features like memory titanium frame and polycarbonate antiglare lenses that would cost a premium from B&M stores for $35. The cons are that they're not the most stylish, and the quality is a bit lower in terms of construction, and you don't get fitting/adjustment. Still, I'm considering going back for prescription sunglasses/tinted lenses, so I'm clearly willing to risk it. Beware that you need to have a good sense of your head dimensions, which your optometrist/opthalmologist can help with, or you can figure it out by trial and error.

Is there any place to get some cheap sports glasses/goggles for kids? Our 8-year old is playing soccer, and I want to get him something he can wear on the field. I'd like something that at least reduces the risk of injury, and also something where I won't be heartbroken when it inevitably breaks when he takes a ball or elbow to the face (I wore glasses and must have broken at least 3 pairs playing soccer).

just got my pair from 39dollarglasses.com and i and super happy with them. Paid $64 shipped with UPS 2nd Day AIR and the better quality lenses!! I got my glasses in 5 days from the day i ordered, it was super fast!! Came with lens and frame and a cleaning cloth, a cloth glasses bag, a hard cover glass case. I was really impressed as lenscrafters didnt even throw all that "little extra stuff" in for me and i paid them 350!!
