View Full Version : New Features: Deal Alerts and Thread Ignore
redsolar

We would like to announce an addition of 2 new features to SlickDeals.net:
<ul>
<li><a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/profile.php?do=ignoredthreadslist" target="_blank">Thread Ignore</a></li>
<li><a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/dealalerts.php?do=viewdealalerts" target="_blank">Deal Alerts</a></li>
</ul>
Both features can be found in your <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/usercp.php" target="_blank">User Control Panel</a> in addition to using links from this annoucement
<strong>Deal Alerts *</strong>
In short, <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/dealalerts.php?do=viewdealalerts" target="_blank">Deal Alerts</a> is a feature which sends you a notification, using <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/profile.php?do=editpassword" target="_blank">E-Mail</a> or <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/private.php" target="_blank">Private Messaging</a> about a keyword you are interested knowing about, in a certain forum and with a certain rating level instantly or via a daily digest. Or just a thread with a certain rating.
Make sure to at least read through the <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/dealalerts.php" target="_blank">Deal Alerts Primer</a> for all the basic features. Advanced users are encouraged to read the complete <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/faq.php?faq=sd_faq_item#faq_deal_alerts_faq" target="_blank">Deal Alerts FAQ</a> to learn about all the tricks you can do with Deal Alerts, since not everything is discussed in detail in the primer <img class="inlineimg" title="Smilie" src="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/smilies/smile.gif" border="0" alt="" />.
<strong>Thread Ignore</strong>
Thread Ignore is a feature, where you mark a thread by clicking the <a href="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/buttons/ignorethreadsmall.gif" target="_blank"><img style="visibility: visible;" src="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/buttons/ignorethreadsmall.gif" border="0" alt="" /></a> button next to the thread title while viewing the forum listing or by using Thread Tools/<a href="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/buttons/ignorethread.gif" target="_blank"><img style="visibility: visible;" src="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/buttons/ignorethread.gif" border="0" alt="" /></a> Ignore thread option; and the thread disappears. Well, at least until you <a href="http://forums.slickdeals.net/profile.php?do=ignoredthreadslist" target="_blank">unignore it</a>.
Useful for threads you don't want to see popping up on your screen. For example deals you are not interested in, discussions you want nothing to do with, and the likes
<strong>Forum Software Update</strong>
We also updated the forum software to the latest version. It includes a few new features.
<ul>
<li>Multiquote - Quote multiple posts within the same thread by clicking on the <a href="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/buttons/multiquote_off.gif" target="_blank"><img style="visibility: visible;" src="http://i.slickdeals.net/images/buttons/multiquote_off.gif" border="0" alt="" /></a> button and then clicking on the reply button.</li>
<li>You can now mod alert your own posts so you can have it moved/deleted by a moderator.</li>
<li>The drop down search box allows you to search in thread title only and also to show results as posts or threads.</li>
<li>The private message "to" field now works the same way as a CC (carbon copy) field. There is also a BCC (blind carbon copy) field.</li>
<li>If you have email notification for new private messages enabled, the private message will be included in the email.</li>
<li>The reputation box is now ajaxified (doesn't open up a new window).</li>
</ul>

I have always loved SD since becoming a member. I have to tell you all the changes being made are absolutely 100% for the better!!! I love the deal alerts, I love that I can ignore threads now and concentrate on only the ones that interest me, I also love the new search features.
A+++++++ job!!!!!!!!!!!
You can now mod alert your own posts so you can have it moved/deleted by a moderator.
You could before, it's just easier now. :P

I like the @title. Does the keyword search include signatures? Because some people list their sd's in their sigs, and what I'm thinking is say I do a general "staples," is that also going to return any new thread where the OP has the word "staples" in their signature?

I love the new "ignore threads" feature!!!
I've hit a few bumps with it today though. I'm quickly reading the titles and deciding whether or not to hit the ignore button. If I get moving fast enough, I get an error, and then in place of the grey circle, I see some spinning outline of a circle instead. I can still click on other threads to ignore them after getting this, but I need to refresh the page to have a second chance at ignoring the one I hit the problem with.

Love the AJAX-ified rep box and the ignore tread feature is a total life-saver ...something I'd been wishing for for a awhile now.
Thanks SD, this site continues to be awesome!

Peoples signature will not trigger a deal alert.

I think the way that shows up should be redesigned. It's way more obvious now than before when it was just a link to a thread I didn't care for. I am not sure how it would be improved, though. Perhaps by left aligning it like the rest of them and making it look like a link or figuring out how to link to the last post in a thread you aren't ignoring. :dontknow:

You can still click on the spinning circle and it'll send the request to the server again. The connection probably choked the first time around.

It can be done but I don't think it's worth the performance tradeoff of hitting the database to find the next unignored thread.

Hey I got a question about ignore?
Do they show up again after I make all read? Some seem to come back on me.

02-18-2007, 11:23 AM
I'm not quite sure what you are saying, but I think I get it. Do you mean you ignore a thread and then later on it will randomly show up again? That happened to me until I cleared out my cookies/temp internet files. I haven't seen it since. Maybe you could try that. :dontknow:
How do I reproduce what you guys are talking about?
I don't see ignored threads. It seems possible to fix what you're saying, I think, but again I don't know exactly what you mean. If in place of "This post is in a thread you are ignoring," the server returned some javascript to essentially remove that message, I wonder if that could be done without a performance hit.
Take my post here for example. You can type this in your browser location box to remove this post from the thread:
javascript:document.getElementById('post5687560').style.display = 'none';void 0
You can get this post back by removing the word none:
javascript:document.getElementById('post5687560').style.display = '';void 0

Ignore a thread with the latest reply in a forum such as Rebates (http://forums.slickdeals.net/forumdisplay.php?sduid=1&f=8) and then go back to the forum index (http://forums.slickdeals.net/). You'll see the ignored thread listed as the last post.

You have a 100 thread limit. It is higher for higher ranked users. The ignore thread feature isn't intended to be used to ignore an entire forum because there are 400k+ threads here. Its purpose is for threads that constantly get bumped or the sticky threads.

Its purpose is for threads that constantly get bumped or the sticky threads.Doesn't this describe the majority of the posts that are in The Lounge? :) If my limit was bumped to 200, I'm sure I could easily hit in < 1 day. IMO, the limit needs to be much higher. I've had to go into the CP a few times and nuke a few of the older ones (and that generally meant there hadn't been a post in the last 2 days). I have to micro-manage the threads I add to this list.
Request #1 - When a user reaches their max # of ignored threads, please pop up an error message so people know to clear out the old threads.
Request #2 - Please consider adding some sort of auto-timeout for the list. Maybe it's the default, maybe it's a configurable option.
Request #3 - Please consider bumping up the # of ignored threads for all member groups. I think 500 should be the minimum. Or is there some sort of server side perf hit for this?

The majority of people don't browse the lounge... personally, I understand what you're saying, but I would NEVER have 200 threads on my ignore, and I don't think I could come up with 100... I know everyone has different opinions but I think 500 is excessive...

That looks OK to me, but I don't check for last posts via the forum index. I thought the comments were concerning the actual listing of threads in a forum, or get today's posts, which when a post is ignored it appears to be completely removed (for me anyway).

I don't get it. It's natural to want to ignore threads, since there are a hundred pages of them, but to ignore a forum, which only shows on one page anyway, just seems unnecessary.

I've got an idea/request. Could we add a feature to allow us to automatically subscribe to threads that match a "deal alert" that we've defined? I often check the control panel more than I do my email, so I think that would be a neat way to bring a potential deal to your attention.
Also, under the "New Subscribed Threads," how about giving us the ability to manage our subscriptions from there (check mark and delete the subscriptions you're no longer interested in), instead of having to go into "view all subscribed threads"?
BTW, I love the deal alerts...so much so that I was very excited when I noticed my limit was no longer 10! :D

You can have the alert sent to you via private message and a pop up will appear when you get a new pm.
There's an unsubscribe link for each thread under the thread title. It's not as elegant as the checkmark boxes but I thought I should point it out just in case.

of course, it is there...I must be blind.
I did see the option to PM, but I thought it would require regular maintenance of my inbox. I see now, though, that the size has been increased to 300 max, and an occasional "empty folder" should do the trick.
Thanks again for a great tool!

If the OP edits their 1st post (fixes misspellings, adds important keywords, etc.) will the post be re-evaluated for alerts? I'll bet I already know the answer, but... it would be nice if it did that.
Some folks omit important details until they are prodded by follow-up posts.
Since we can specify a minimum rating, is a post re-evaluated every time somebody applies a rating, or only the first time it rises to each new level? For example, say I specify "1 thumbs" as a filter. Does my alert get checked only the first time a post reaches "1" or again when it gets voted up to 1.5, 2, etc.? Suppose it goes down and back up? (I specify a filter of "2", a post goes up to 2, then down to 1, then up to 2 again, then 3)
random.

It must be the 25 then, because the thread is still in the Hot Deals section. Thanks!

With the deal alert is it possible to alert an email address other than the one we registered with?
eg, paging my blackberry would be nice.

I don't know. However, you can go here (http://forums.slickdeals.net/profile.php?do=editprofile) and edit your email address to your blackberry one.

Question about ignored threads - what happens when you go over 300 ignored threads? Is 300 the limit?

Sorry for the bump.
Just noticed something. If you have a thread on ignore, and you go into that thread, and do an advanced search for your username, it doesn't find anything.
Take it a step further. You can find out if someone else is ignoring the thread. If you do an advanced search for someone else who you know posted in the thread, it doesn't find anything.
So, is this a glitch or am I wrong?

I think the ignored threads needs to be more than 300 to be useful.

Helpful, thanks folks!
is there a way for deal alerts to be setup to only search titles ?
and an idea, how about a link to "subscribed threads" from the homepage ?
slickdeals

Use "@title" w/o quotes to search in titles. For example "@title features deal alerts" would find this thread.
If you click on your username on the homepage, it'll bring you to UserCP which shows your subscribed threads.

I believe that your request goes in the Site Issues & Suggestions forum (you can Mod Alert your post and ask to have it moved there if you want). I also think it's been mentioned that you can PM Mr. SD directly to change it. (though he may have already seen your request in this thread.)

why do some of my email alerts have the thread title in the email subject (which is great) and some simply have the alert title ? sorry if this has been answered elsewhere

I could be wrong, but I think that when you see the thread title in the alert, that alert is for a single alert item, in a single thread or forum. But when there's no thread title in the alert, the email contains multiple alert items, in multiple threads or forums.

That is correct. The title area has a character limit so it needs to be condensed for multiple alerts.

I hit 400 threads on my 'ignore'. Now I want to ignore other deals that are coming around, but I'm sure there are some of the first deals I put on 'ignore' that are long dead. I notice on my 'ignore threads' page that it only shows the last 100 I put on ignore. Is there any way to have access to the prior pages of threads on 'ignore', so I can go in and 'unignore' them?
TIA to all for all you do!

All of mine are on one page... More than 100, but definitely less than 400.
When you fill up the list, the thread that was bumped the longest time ago gets removed from the list, making room for the thread you want to ignore now.

Well, that seemed to be true for me until I hit 400. I've 'unignored' some posts from the 100 I can see, but would just assume ignore them and clear out the oldest of my 'ignores'. Hopefully a mod will see my post and offer me some info on what to do. :wave: Thanks for trying to help, though!

First, read the Deal Alert FAQ (http://forums.slickdeals.net/faq.php?faq=sd_faq_item#faq_deal_alerts_faq) to get a sense of what kind of alerts, keywords and combinations, etc., that you can set up. That should answer most of your questions :). Next, go to your User CP. On the left-hand side you should see the Deal Alerts option about half way down. To add an alert, click on "Add Deal Alert". On the bottom of that page are a few more FAQ. Read those too, then set up your alerts :).
