We've already got optional icons we can choose to use for a given post or thread (lightbulb, thumbs up, various smilies, etc.), how 'bout adding optional tags for the first post in a given thread? These would come up just like the existing "sticky" tag, and would help to categorize the threads. We would (could) choose from a list of, ohhh, say:
HD
CPU/Mobo
Flash Memory
Appliances
Tools
... or whatever choices you mods make available to us. Like the (frankly) seldom-used icons, I suppose we could decline to use any tag at all, in which case the thread titles would look just as they do now. You can call them tags or categories or whatever. In any case, I think it could improve the browsing of the Hot Deals forum. You know, sometimes it's not at all clear what the heck the deal is for, until you click on the link to the actual product. Also, people uninterested in video cards, for example, can quickly and easily skip over such threads.

If this gets implemented and people don't like it, you can simply remove this feature!

Ok, now it's official. Over 50 people have viewed this thread, but.... doesn't anybody think this would be helpful? No comments?

it's just me, I like to tap the F5 button excessively =/

I had mentioned the category/keyword solution here (http://www.slickdeals.net/forums/showpost.php?p=513544&postcount=13) in terms of categorizing threads as rebate/non-rebate, electronics/etc.

currently the only option is to have a single category for each thread. we would like to be able to search/filter by multiple keywords. in any case I would like to see this feature implemented.

I was thinking more like sticky vs. non-sticky. Only mods have the option to make a thread a sticky, and us regular people don't even see that option. I know it's asking a lot to implement an entirely new feature, since you guys don't write the vBulletin software. But I was thinking specifically about expanding an already implemented function. Namely, having more than just "sticky:" as an option. Of course, the "sticky:" option would continue to be available for use by mods only, and it would continue to be more than just a tag (i.e., it would turn threads into stickies).

So you want a sticky, but not a sticky? Makes sense.

But honestly, how hard is it to see the thread title and figure out what it's for? A lot easier than trying to figure out which piece of tech is supposed to represented by a 16x16 pixel icon.

Oh no! I wasn't referring to the push-pin icon! I mean, just how it says "sticky: " in front of stickies, you could easily add "mobo: " or "memory: " ... just the text. Many (but not all) such listings have something to that effect anyway, so it wouldn't make the thread titles any longer. This would require little to no coding, and is easily reversible; if people didn't like it, we could easily go back to the way it is now.

Also, it could be used to please all those people who only want to look at certain categories, or not see some of them.

cookie, we're talking about the same thing basically - putting a category keyword next to each thread title. right now this is pretty limited - there is no means of filtering just by one category (i.e. to see all the "laptop" deals, etc)

we'll be working on this.
