View Full Version : Thumbs down bandit hitting all my new threads - mods please investigate

It appears that an user with a vendetta is routinely rating all my new threads with a thumbs down. I would appreciate it if a mod would look at the following threads to find out who is doing it and speak to them about their behavior. here are the most recent three:
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=36308&t=525654
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=36308&t=525668
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=36308&t=525660
and this one too - most likely the same bandit:
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=36308&t=526245
I went out of my way to find unposted deals for free coloring books since those are things many users are always looking for. I find it hard to believe that more than one user would rate these with a thumbs down. The deals don't suck and the links do work. The only reason to hiut them with a thumbs down and no comment as to why is to discourage me from posting or to 'Punish" me.
If you see a pattern, please speak to the person involved and remined them of the real purpose of a thumbs down rasting. Thanks. if this pattern continues, I see no reason to post new deals since they will just be badly rated the moment they go up.

It looks like the link in the first post doesn't work. Maybe that's why it got a thumbs down?
I didn't look at the rest.

Maybe it's because you give it a thumbs up after you post the threads and it annoys them. :dontknow:
However I don't think the mods will post the culprit on this thread, nor will they tell you who it is. But on a positive note, if it is the same person, they might get a warning.

I noticed that today NM, and it's just plain wrong that someone is doing that! I appreciate all of the offers you posted. You always find unique itmes to share with SDers. Gave some of them thumbs up, because they ARE good deals.

hi Nuala'sMom
thank you for letting us know
anytime a member is suspected of improperly using the rating system, they are watched, and if warranted, their voting rights are removed.
Maybe it's because you give it a thumbs up after you post the threads and it annoys them. :dontknow:she didn't, other members gave her threads thumbs up votes.
However I don't think the mods will post the culprit on this thread, nor will they tell you who it is. But on a positive note, if it is the same person, they might get a warning.

That's not very nice!
Maybe they don't know how to color and are taking out their frustrations on you. Mods, when you find out who it is, please direct them to PBS.org.
NM, keep up the good work. I know you are always very helpful and informative in the free mags forum.

It seems it's not just me - CountryGirl seems to be getting hit too. Nobody minds thumbs downs if there is an explanation or if someone else says the deal is a problem and then others add their own thumbds downs. Thumbs downs are useful that way. It's when they are used to punish a user for exposing a bad deal, because they aren't in your private rep giving clique (where members rep eachother and thumbs up eachother's posts cooperatively), because they mod alerted a bod post of yours, or for losts of other silly reasons.
I even see that Thumbs up doesn't mean much anymore! Just yesterday I saw four or five obvious scams with four and fiive thumbs ups and "thankyou" posts despite others warning of the scam. The same several people then posted little comments like "Well I appreciate this deal" as if to say no users are allowed to let others know about information harvesting scams. It's a shame really. It makes slick deals vunerable to abuse when users are afraid to let others know a post is suspect.
I only posted here because that's what we have been advised to do in the past. Also, I added a new link to the first offer with the broken link.

For this reason, suspicious thumbs ups or downs may have to be modalerted. If newbs are jumping on scam deals because they see 5 thumbs up, they may get burned and never come back to SD's. :shake:

Maybe eveyone else should just stop making comments on threads unless they agree with your thoughts? I don't see any other way to solve your problem.

EKT - nobody minds honest comments intended to help other users be they good or be they bad. What experienced users detest is the deliberate punishment of some users by new users or gangs of users for some imagined slight. I know of one user who used to routinely thumbs down every single thread I posted simply because I mod alerted one of her threads where she was trying to get referral credits on some diaper seller site. It didn't matter that such lreferal links weren't allowed, she was mad that I cost her $2 for each chump who used her link.
Then there are other stupid and petty things that go on here such as one person will assume that because you pointed out that a deal was only good in the UK that you were picking on their best friend.
This seems to go in cycles - the abuse of the thumbs up and thumbs down process. Then people let the mods know it's happening, some people get warned and it dies down.If users don't report abuses, the system becomes meaningless.
I rarely every thumbs down posts simply because the thumbs down indication has ceased to mean much. However, when I see good threads being dumped on with anonymous thumbs down and NO accompanying comments to explain why the deal sucks, I will usually look into myself and try to explain why the deal sucks or doesn't. If others do the same, maybe we can help out by at least giving a reason for the thumbs downs such as : broken link, old deal and item never comes, deal is restricted to a particular profession etc etc.
More info is always better than no info at all, right?

Excellent points. I've had threads that were thumbs downed for no reason at all... no one had commented and I had already had one thumbs down. The link wasn't bad... the freebie wasn't something everyone would be interested in and it did apply to a specific market only, but it's still a freebie! If it doesn't apply to you, pass it and don't bother thumbs downing it because it wasn't a good freebie for YOU!

I think that at the top of the thread where the thumbsup/thumbsup is, there should be a button to click that shows all thumbs up & downs and each person is required to leave a comment, just like reps.
For the following reasons:
1. It is much easier to see if there is a pattern of one particular person thumbsdowning deals
2. It forces them to give a REASON for their thumbsdown
3. It will make them think twice about doing it if others will know

I think the new deals I liked/deals I didn't like thing in the profile helps spotlight this if it happens.

I like that feature as well, but it still is a bit limiting to finding a "bandit" so to speak.

Especially since there is no "one" bandit. It's just a SD myth that refuses to die.

That's true, however, if you happen upon ones profile it'd be easy to see a pattern so hopefully it'd discourage people from doing it.

And mod alert it!!
Normally, people see it, and vote thumbs up to counter act. I can't see who voted when, just what they voted. So it's best to leave it like it is, and MA it.

I found a bandit, anybody who has 32 pages of thumbs downs and targets Isis, Mistressnyx, Brisar, CountryGirl, ubblue, lolu13, and mainly really great thumbs up posts has some sort of problem. I didn't look at all 32 pages but saw the pattern. Its sad.

It could be happening accidentally. If their screen resolution settings and text size is off they could be hitting the thumbs down even though it appears to them that they are clicking on a thumbs up.I noticed in my profile that there are a few threads that I know I thumbed up but are showing up as threads I thumbed down. They happened while I was using Windows ME.My setting were ALWAYS messed up back then, with numbers and images not showing up in their correct placemat.Anyway, thankfully it only happened a few times and since then I have switched to XP Pro where everything works beautifully.

That might be possible but the 40 some pages of thumbs ups were mostly thumbs ups the poster gave to their own posts. Not one thumbs down was for the original OPs.

Thank you for letting us know. I was just stunned when I read this thread, then saw all those votes from that one poster. I looked at the profile on a hunch. It just amazes me that anyone on such a nice site as Slickdeals would act so mean just to look good or get reps.

You had a good "hunch." I imagine pretty much everyone else does as well.(if you frequent the Freebies section much) I think that the new thread kel_be started in the Announcements Forum will help to make many improvements. They are asking for our input. How cool is that?

1) Not attacking or directed at above poster, mods, or anyone in this thread.
2) But, I don't like the "excusing," or what I refer to as the "enabling," of what could be an aciident on the part of this particular poster, but a grwing trend of hate on SD. I left FW bc. of this issue. This website could have been/could be in the future if laws/rules/ethics are contiuned to be violated. And that would be terrible bc. of all of the hard work deals, money raised for charities, and the 98.9% of wonderful, giving, etc. people here! (Soft hugs!)
Has anyone publicly posted and complained (with poster's names) about those who are upset with others' opinions/facts/discussion ethics/intelligence/wisdom/experience/sel-control, etc. thumbs down threads, send harrassing pms, host outside private chats, send pms and chain pms, emails with personal and ad hominem attacks, personal informations from investigations and online in-depth seraches . . .
Bc. this has happened, a couple of things, and not only to one poster. And names have been named! Kettle=black. And I wonder which is more statistically significant?
Link it up, please! And I will, too! april
Losing interest in the lack of ethics, disrespect for SD rules, federal laws, hate crime laws, all of the isms on here, wild opinions lacking exp., sources, basis, ASS-uming, retaliation, and 58 year old so-called doctors who act like 4 year olds and the 14 year olds pretending to be 58 year old doctors.
Also, the 14 members with 58 accounts who thumbs down the charitable causes, "bite," or refuse to support after ## deal, freebies, q's postings in hopes of a 4 sec. click to feed children and save abused cats and de-pollute the oceans. I know---how horrible! Let's kill innocent children everywhere else instead!
 MIAO!
Salutations!
By the way mods! Thanks for all that you have done thusfar!
