View Full Version : why can't i give negative rep points?

because when people were allowed to, they gave it for no reason. and it was unfair to those who actually care about their rep.

Who gets to decide that? For example, what if I think you deserve one for starting this thread? Do you then retaliate by giving me one for disagreeing with your opinion? The whole idea of "rating" other peopl'e posts, especially with negative points, is assinine except, possibly, to indicate the more helpful people in deals and tech support - that's about it.

I know that some mod or mods have (not counting irons).
I saw someone the other day with 7 rep points.
Since only mods can give them out and mod points count for 3 regular points, some mod has given them out.
Doesn't seem to be a very common thing, though.

people with low rep pts can easily be like irons who had a low score when it first came out where people can give neg pts anywhere. that didn't work out well, so it became only in the deal section/tech support then it wasn't working either. so it was scrapped, and brought back again. this time only plus pts.
really think smacking people over the head is far more effective.

i hope youre not implying that irons didnt deserve those negative rep points.
it would be nice if mods could give like negative 5 rep pts for those who beg/ask for them.

i'm not a fan of people asking/begging for rep pts either, but usually its after they do something good. like an op of a great deal, someone who gives out coupons, someone who runs carfax reports/give gmail invites. so i look the other way on that. if its someone like irons who is just flat out begging for neg pts i'd be glad to give him positive pts.
irons really didn't deserve that much, he posted a stupid post about a freebie he needed to enter a cc for and was shocked they charged him. i really think if it happened after we had neg pts for a while he wouldn't have gone so low. after he was around -10 or so he started campainging for them.
as to the smacking people part, you design it, we'll add it.

I agree wholeheartedly! It's particular annoying when people reply to a post just to ask for a rep point. One would think that the satisfaction of sharing ideas, deals, and other information with others would be enough. The concept of "what's in it for me?" is not consistent with what makes SD such a great service.
What stops two SDers from continuously giving each other rep points? Couldn't I just ask one of my SD buddies to look up my old posts and awarding a rep point to each one?
In protest of the impact of rep points, I have turned my rep point option off. Don't care and others shouldn't either.

Nah u gotta spread around the points before givin it to the sam e person again. and u cant give more than 1 per post by a person. i mean i wanted to give a few to jen cuz of the great freebies she posted, but siad i had to spread some rep around .
i think if you care this much about "rep points" at slickdeals.net, you have bigger problems....much bigger problems...get a life dorks! :P

I'm impressed with the new system: only allowing plus rep points. This way, people either stay at their rep point value or it increases for them. It's a great improvement over the old system. Not that rep points get us cold hard cash or anything! :)

OK how about this: We need to be able to have a recourse against those posting unwelcome things (free ipods, self referrals, etc), signing up and making a first post that is spam, advertisement, etc, or consistantly posting the same things (not reposts but posting stuff inapropratly either like free ipod deals over and over or posting in the wrong forum repeatedily, etc). We have the thread rating system where multiple people have to check a thumbs up or a thumbs down for the rating to be changed right? How about the same concept for the reputation and when you get a negative number for reputation you are automatically suspended from posting OR when you loose a given number of reputation points in a given period of time you get posting privledges revoked so someone doesn't all of the sudden start posting bogus deals after posting like 20 good ones.
The mods are great and I know this is their job/responsibility but they can't be everywhere all the time and this community IS responsible on the whole policing ourselves and rating threads and the mods do always have the ultimate power of VETO on everything.
Personally I could care less about post counts or reputation points- I would like to see a way or removing the undesirable's who refuse to follow the rules and I believe this to be the best way to do that.

What you're proposing wouldn't effect change at all - all it would do is create little thumb icons on the forum screen. What good would that do? It's not like the people spamming the whacked out Ipod BS really care if they get a thumb ... or other finger.
All the forum sites I've seen have been inundated with those threads. Delete them, ban them, play funky with their computer... The Ipod scam will go away and be replaced with something else. Irritating but a fact of the net.
Pretty much its up to the mods/admins to take care of. Email the spammers ISP's, block their IP addy, do whatever SD can do to dissuade them from coming back.

how bout only neg rep points if you start the thread? And make it something like a max of minus 5?
oh only in hot deals.

this is why there is a modalert button at the bottom of every post. you can use modalert to report threads and posts to moderators, so we can take appropriate action.
instead of posting in the thread to say "hey OP, you suck!" you should let the mods know via modalert.
users who post referral links or attempt to promote their sites/ebay sales/etc are warned (each warning carries a certain number of points). if they continue to disregard the rules, or accumulate a certain number of warning points, they are temporarily or permanently banned.
as far as reputation points, they are merely a perk.

No, you misunderstood my suggestion. The concept is the same but instead of putting a "thumb" gesture when a certain number of people click on a certain button the person gets repramanded (be that repramand deletion or whatever) My reference to the Thumb rating is simply because that system is in place and works.
I Understand the Mods are there and do forward what I believe to be inapropriate postings but I don't want to load up the mods with things that I don't (and in many cases several others) think is not appropriate but the mods may disagree.
My reasoning is to releave the mods of some mail and some repeated mails.
Thank you YWC for the clarification of how the system works- I will simply report them.

Ah, I believe the mod alert only sends/posts once... or at least it should if it was written right.
The problem with your suggestion is that a group of people, or just one person, could abuse that system. Retribution.... there's plenty that would do that.

What about adding something on the home page, just below the "welcome to Slicdeals" that would read: "Please read all rules and tips before using this site. Cick here" and then post there al the basic rules like: "Do not call the vendor...". "Don't buy a lot of one item when there is a wrong price", etc. The rerason is b/c the last couple day's I've seen a lot of new members posting "I just called to find out about the satatus of my order...". When told about "do not call" they respond, "Sorry, I didn't know..."

When is the last time anyone actually read a complete software license top-to-bottom before clicking "Accept?"
Those who go along rules will read and even seek them out, and those who ignore rules will still ignore them even if you smite them upside the head with the rules twice a day :lmao:

I belong to a site that has a similar rep. system.
For example, if I was to give you a neg. rep point & you gave me 1 back, that's it. We can't give any more to eachother unless we give 1 to every memeber of the board first. Then we could go after eachother again.
But I agree with wizzledizzle, if we can't give out negs, only positives, then just abolish the whole system. There have been plenty of times I've wanted to give out negs, for instance, someone taking advantage of a company: they complained about not being able to send text messages over seas & T-Moble took off $5, so he posted that everyone should make up a complaint & get a $5 credit. If that person didn't deserve a neg from me, then no one does.
And I know I have atleast 3 or more rep points w/ people chewing me out. I mean, come on. Not to mention, people are on;y posting now in order to try to get points. You always see atleast 1 post in Hot Deals a day "And don't forget to leave me a Rep. Point on your way out!"
I say abolish it.
If we can't neg, just get rid of the whole system.
The Raddish

The mods can and do give negative reputation points, but mostly we give warnings. As ywc has already pointed out in this thread, warnings also carry a point value (visible only to the mods and the recipient), and if 10 or more are accumulated, the individual gets banned from the site for a period of time.
Furthermore, using the modalert button does not automatically remove a post or thread. It summons the mods to look at the thread, and if action is warranted, action will be taken. We actually urge you to use the modalert button when you see a "free ipod" thread or a "fake hustler" thread or some such in order to make sure you bring them to our attention.
As for the reputation points, they are only here to help users distinguish between those folks on the site that are quite helpful, and those that just come here to chit-chat. They are essentially meaningless, and if you chose, you can turn them off by clicking on your user CP (http://slickdeals.net/forums/profile.php?do=editoptions) at the top left side of the screen.

I agree. Do away with the rep system. It's useless. I try to be as helpful as I can be on this site and I have gotten one rep point, but my rep # is still at 10.

"Rep pts per post" is a more meaningful stat than absolute rep points.
Example: A poster with 300 posts and 30 rep pts may post better than someone with 3,000 posts and 60 rep pts.

I like the rep. point system. It makes people who usually wouldn't waste their time to help out others, help out so they can get rep. points. :)
