I know that there are a few of you.
I have a lot of time on my hands, so I'm attempting some new things. I'm actually using patterns now, where before I just knitted whatever came about. :D
I'm beginning to realize that I only have small needles and I'm becoming a yarn snob.
I knitted a hat for my nephew, one for myself (no patterns), a baby-carrier (no pattern), and now I'm going to start working on some fingerless gloves.
Anyone else? Any deals on good yarn, needles, etc.?

YAY! Knitting!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok, first of all, sign up to join Ravelry. (www.ravelry.com) The waitlist is huge, but they just got their new servers, so it shouldn't be TOO long. It's a knitting/crocheting community...
Second, check out my knitting set! http://www.flickr.com/photos/passionategray81/sets/72157601288837301/
I am OBSESSED with knitting, for reals. And I've only had three projects, two of which are listed below. I started knitting with making a hat.
Right now I am working on a pair of toe up socks on a circular needle and also a blankie (called Joseph's Blankie of Many Colors) for my nephew.
Ooo, and me and my friends from my knitting group also are getting featured in a local magazine too because there are tons of young people that are getting into knitting now.
What I would recommend is to go to Hobby Lobby's website because they have a 40% off coupon every now and then. You can get some cheap yarn that way.
I also recommend getting Knit Picks Options interchangeable needles (http://www.knitpicks.com/Options%20Harmony%20Wood%20Interchangeable%20Needle%20Set_ND90306.html)if you ever knit on circular needles, although you can adapt them as straight needles, too. They aren't cheap, but they are good to have around and you will have everything you need right away.
And join Ravelry! When you get on I will add you on my friends list. :)

I've been knitting for 41 years. Started when I was 7. It's loads of fun and these days, my house being full of afghans and sweaters, I'm mostly knitting sweaters and blankets for charities. My knitting goes everywhere with me. I don't mind sitting around waiting, because most of the time, I can knit and not feel like I'm wasting time. (Keep a tote bag handy and get those snippers or a yarn cutting pendant to keep in it, as well as finishing needles. I like the plastic T-pins for when I'm sewing a finished piece together. I keep those in a small ziploc baggie.)
Spring for the interchangeable circular needles someone mentioned above. They're worth every penny. Plus, circulars are more polite when you go on trains, buses, planes, in the car--you're not poking people with long straight needles. For big projects, circulars distribute the weight better so your wrists don't ache after you've knit 5 rows. You might want to get a set of various sizes of double-pointed needles, too, for doing socks. And get those row counters that slip on the needle--invaluable for keeping track of your pattern.
Lion Brand yarn and Patons have websites and free e-newsletters you can sign up for, and tons of free patterns online. There's also Herrschner's (online and catalog). I have a lot of good yarn stores near me, so I don't shop much online. Have fun!

Find your local yarn store. They offer classes usually or if they don't, there is usually someone who will be more than happy to help you learn how to knit!

YAY!
I think most knitters/crocheters have more yarn than knitted items. A book that I just received (a surgery gift) says something about yarn-guilt. Apparently, the author had a whole closet full of yarn that she hid from a boyfriend for a very long time, but eventually, she just put it all out there, once she realized how much time he spent on football. :D
So, why only scarves, blankets, and purses? Just curious. For me, I'm not confident enough with pattern reading for more complex projects just yet, and I need to learn from more experienced knitters, but being cooped up in the house doesn't lend itself to that. Soon...soon. :D Glad to talk to you. Have you found any cheap places to buy yarn?

Whoa! I am impressed! Keep it up. That is a real commitment, but when you're finished, you're going to feel so good about it. It will be an heirloom.
I've never understood how to knit a project that big. The ends of the needles are finite, so unless you scrunch something up, I don't understand how it can be done. Crocheting is different, because you bind each stitch, but knitting leaves each stitch open until you bind-off. Got any photos of your project?

I KNEW you'd join in! I actually tried to reply to your thread before creating this one, but alas...it was too old. :( I am on the ravelry waiting list! I've heard about it through a podcast that I listen to. Most of the knit/crochet podcasts are rubbish, but a few are worthwhile. Frankly, I find listening to someone knit quite boring, unless they have something interesting to say.
Oh, your hat is finished! I remember when you started it on the round needles. :D CUTE! I feel like I have all the wrong thread/needles for the projects I want to create.
I want to start some socks, but I've never attempted them before. Are you doing them on the round needles, or are you doing it using the double-siders? It looks like you're using double-siders. This is your first pair? Wow! You're doing a great job! You're inspiring me. Maybe I can do socks, afterall.
Okay, prepare to barf...I knitted a textured heart square (learning to knit/purl patterns) and my husband loved it so much that he took it to work and traced out the heart. He's got it up at his desk. I thought that was pretty cute. I think the textured patters are pretty swift. I'm going to attempt that alien scarf that's in Stitch'n Bitch once I've got some $$ for yarn and needles. (Being on disability has financial disadvantages, don'tcha know?)
I didn't even know that Hobby Lobby HAD a website!! Thank you!

I love Lion Brand's newer patterns! They used to have a lot of stodgy patterns, but they've really started to pick up on the trendier things now. They've got some gorgeous fingerless gloves, cowls, legwarmers/bootcovers, etc. I'll take your advice on those t-pins. I'll bet they help your work come out more refined looking. Thanks for the advice! It's great to have a more seasoned stitcher around.

Hi Cheergal!
Knitters/crocheters are a very friendly lot, and almost always willing to help a newbie learn. By the very virtue of their craft, they're almost always social within their own group, so don't be afraid to go to a yarn store (like PassionateGray said), or go to Craigslist and find a local knitting circle (sometimes called Stitch n' Bitch) where people will be very happy to help.
I don't know where you live in TX, but here are a few in that area:
http://stitchnbitchdallas.blogspot.com/
http://www.stitchnbitch.org/snb_groups.htm#tx
http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/03/stitch_n_bitch_crochet_book_re.html (look in the column on the right, for events in TX)
http://www.pegasusnews.com/events/2007/sep/09/42101/
You can also get step-by-step instructions online at diy.com (type in keyword "knitting"). This site plays a video that you can watch. Remember this; everyone knits/crochets just a little differently, so if you can't learn right away, it's not because you're no good, it's because you likely knit differently than your instructor. I couldn't learn from my mother, and I couldn't learn from my friend. Neither really had the patience to teach and as it turns out, I knit differently than anyone I know. I had to learn by reading a book, and even then I developed my own style.
Knitting is easy. It's just making loops with yarn. You can move forward from that point - patterns and such, but you can make plenty of lovely, functional things just by making loops.
You probably won't want to start on the blanket that nana left behind, because it's likely that she was knitting for years before she started on that blanket. Build your chops by working on simpler items first, like hats, scarves, etc. Then move on to a few baby blankets and pattern reading, then you'll be ready for that blanket. :D Good luck to you. Let us know how it goes.

Yarn? usually get it from JoAnn's and Michaels when it's on sale. I'll splurge at the yarn shops if I fall in love with something, but then, I don't want to use it! I am knitting my socks on a circular needle (size 2 I think...) from Knit Picks. I'll tell you what, the toes went great.. the foot went great... now I'm on the heel and it takes some concentration. I've already torn it out once (you can read about the fiasco here: http://joeysgirle.wordpress.com/2007/09/07/well-another-mistake/ ). I might try to pick it up tonight... it depends. We have company coming over.
And I love that Stitch'n Bitch book!!!!!!!! I have Stitch'n Bitch Nation checked out from the library right now. :D
Another great book with cute stuff is Knit 2 Together (http://www.amazon.com/Knit-Together-Patterns-Stories-Knitting/dp/1584795344/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-0820775-0256932?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1189450794&sr=1-1). It has funny stories and the patterns in it are sooooo cute! You should check it out. :D

Thank you for the advice! I am going to see what I can find here in my lil ol town.
I am hoping that if I start pretty soon I can get the blanket finished in time for Christmas. It's about 3/4 of the way done already. She was knitting it in Maroon and white (Texas A&M) for him when he graduated college. But she passed away before it was done and his mother gave me the blanket along with the extra yarn and needles to finish it saying I was crafty maybe one day I could learn and finish it for him.
I am sitting here nearly in tears. I KNOW he will cry if I get it done for him. (sorry I am a sap)
Again thank you to you all for the advice.:hugs:

I have a friend who's going to find out if she's growing a boy or a girl soon so I'm getting geared up for another baby blanket!
EASY way to make hats:
Cast on until the hat is long enough. (Don't worry about making it a little too long. Extra length can be rolled into a brim.) Length should be about the same as a hand plus 1 or 2 inches (for a preemie, I would guess one inch would be sufficient).
Knit until there are 12" of rows (this is appx. preemie size).
Bind off.
Sew the seams together.
Thread a piece of yarn and work through the top of the hat, then cinch it together, tie a knot, and flip the hat.
I don't know if that makes sense. I hope so. :D

Granny squares (or similar squares) are great for using up those small bits of leftover yarn that aren't big enough for anything else. I made a crocheted afghan years ago that used "puff squares"--like grannies. The project was very portable until I got to the final assembly, and the afghan is really thick and warm. I should post a photo... Anyhow, I started making the squares again about 4 years ago and chucking them into a basket, figuring when I had enough, I'd make one of those afghans for my son. I think I have something like 300 of them, so I should be ready to assemble it soon.
Most of the knitted afghans I've made were done in strips that you sew together. A few were one-piece on 36-inch circular needles. After 9/11 I did one that looks like the American flag...two strands of knitting worsted held together and worked on ginormous tent-pin needles.
Lionbrand.com has lots of well-illustrated tutorials in various knitting skills. Check Amazon or the library for "The Big Book of Knitting," which has lots of great explanations and advice (I still need directions to do the Kitchener stitch weaving on sock toes!).
Remember that if you're buying yarn to make clothing, you don't have to pay tax on it. :woot:

Or you can find something like this for your Humane Society: http://www.swh.org/papipad.html
Another great thing to donate to! Plus you don't have to worry about buying the best yarn for it... anything will do. :)

Just tell 'em it's for clothing. The cashiers at AC Moore (a craft store near me) always ask, the ones at Michael's not so much. Although if you live in a state where clothing is taxed (say, NY), you may be out of luck. But Pennsy doesn't tax clothing. Yet!
I'm so happy to see younger folks getting into knitting and reinvigorating the craft for all of us (I'm so ancient  ). I made a poncho last year ... only my second, but I made the first one in 1971! Pretty soon I'll be able to wear my new one when walking my kid to the bus stop too early in the morning ... it's in a blue Lion Homespun with a split collar, very chic!

Or you can find something like this for your Humane Society: http://www.swh.org/papipad.html (http://slickdeals.net/?sduid=60714&t=603592&u2=http://www.swh.org/papipad.html)
Another great thing to donate to! Plus you don't have to worry about buying the best yarn for it... anything will do. :)
Perfect for the beginning knitter!
My local knit group requires that we each donate one chemo cap a month....most do several more than that...perhaps I'll mention the needs of the kitties too. ;)

Oooh, that's a nice idea!
Seriously my fiber friends....if you have time, there is a always a need for donated chemo caps for cancer patients. Check it out with your local American Cancer Society!
Is there a pattern that they prefer?

Here, PG and SK....this is my friend's basic chemo cap pattern...
Dale Anne's Chemo Cap
Size 8 - 16” circular needle, and either another size 8 circular
or size 8 double points for use when decreasing.
Worsted weight yarn.
Cast on 72 stitches.
K2, P2 for 6 rows.
K each row until cap measures
6-1/2” from start.
Begin Decreases:
1st decrease: *K6, k2tog* (repeat around). Knit next row.
2nd decrease: *K5, k2tog* (repeat around). Knit next row.
3rd decrease: *K4, k2tog* (repeat around). Knit next row.
4th decrease: *K3, k2tog* (repeat around).
5th decrease: *K2, k2tog* (repeat around).
6th decrease: *K1, k2tog* (repeat around).
7th decrease: *k2tog* (repeat around); then pull yarn through remaining
stitches with a tapestry needle. Pull end through to the inside
of the hat, weave in, and trim.
This an easy cap to make. If you’d like a tighter ribbing, use a size 7 circular needle. Also, to accommodate larger heads, you can add stitches in increments of eight. If making a wider cap, you may also want to make it longer before starting your decreases.

One day, I'd like to be able to make the cupcake cap (http://slickdeals.net/?sduid=18409&t=603592&u2=http://www.nakedsheep.com/cupcakehat.html), or the sundae hat. Has anyone ever made one of those?
Right now, I'm working on my own pattern (read: I'm just knitting away...without a pattern) for a tea cozy. I know that sounds ridiculously old-fashioned, but while I've been whittling away my hours at home, I've gone through a lot of tea, and I'm sick of it growing cold.
I'm also going to work on some wristlets.
Here's a great site about knitting caps for less fortunate kids:

There are one or two good ones, but wow are there some strange people in the world. The other day, I listened to one called "Just Linda Knitting"...and she wasn't joking. Now, I've read the books. I've seen the movies, but the day will never come where I dress up and go hang out with a bunch of 12 year olds who want to play. It's not like she went with a kid. She went with friends.

I used Encore Colors by Plymouth in the worsted weight (200 yards). One skein will make two hats (using Dale Ann's pattern). That hat is slightly smaller than what a normal one would be, because I went with size 6 needles.

So the needles help you keep things spaced out correctly, right? That's my down fall with crocheting... I can never manage to keep everything spaced out correctly.
Nope, the needles keep the stitches open. In crocheting apparently you bind off with each stitch, but knitting keeps all the stitches open until you bind off in the end.
I've never crocheted before... but I know that the biggest thing on spacing it correctly is tension. I knit WAY too tight, so I have to purposefully try to knit looser... whereas other people knit too loose and they drop stitches that way or end up with holey knits (I think... I've only been doing it for a little while, so I couldn't tell ya).

Hey, anyone here experienced with log cabin knitting? I'm working on a blanket and I'm confused at whether I should completely bind off on the row or not. It says I'm supposed to leave on stitch there but if I do that gives me one extra stitch on the next row.

I'm making the Naptime baby blanket on the same page as the Prairie Star Afghan. It's pretty easy. The yellow, blue and white daisy afghan on my blog was given as a baby shower gift. I can't say it was an "easy to bang out" project though. ;)

Crochet question for anyone who can answer - how in the heck do you manage multiple strands? I found a great pattern for a baby blanket but it calls for two strands to be worked throughout. I usually wind my yarn into a ball and put it in a plastic bowl so it doesn't roll all over the place and tempt the kids/cats. It also helps me maintain even tension as I work. I guess I could use two bowls - but if anyone has any tips or tricks I'd love to hear it!
Hmm.. I suppose I could wind both skeins into one big ball, but that potentially could be a knotty problem.

As a knitter, I just have one ball on each side of my lap because I usually knit on the couch. But I don't think you should wind both of them together... that would make a mess, I think. But I dunno... :)

Beautiful hat!
When I crochet with 2 strands I'm generally using scrap yarn so sometimes it's in a ball, sometimes in a skein, sometimes one of each. I really prefer pulling it from a skein. It's less likely to get tangled.

Thanks for the advice - I've never had luck pulling from a skein. I can never find which side to start on - do I pull from the middle or the outside? I know - I sound like an idiot. That's why I usually just wind it into a ball.
Also - that knitting video was crazy! That woman is fast!

Always from the center. :) Pulling from the outside is nearly impossible, at least for me. ;) Most yarn companies are making that end piece easier to find these days. Older skeins can be very difficult. Some companies even mark the package with arrows to show you how to get it started right.
If you still prefer to wind it into a ball, your bowl idea sounds great! I'll have to remember that the next time I'm using a ball.

Oh man I'm an idiot! :lmao: I just found out I've been crocheting wrong for years. :rofl2:
I've been using the front stitch only ALL THE TIME! Geez. You learn something new every day.
Q: I do not know what "front stitch only" and "back stitch only " are so please explain for me.
A: When you make a crochet stitch (single, double, etc) you will notice that there are 2 loops on the top of the stitch. When you are holding the right side of your work towards you, the loop closest to you is the front loop, and the loops behind it is the back loop. So if the pattern says " through back loops" you would make your crochet stitch by inserting your hook through the loop behind the front loop only and not through both loops as is normally done.
Whoops.

I've read two of the three books in Debbie Macomber's knitting series - they are nice (not trashy at all which is nice for a change!) easy reads. I never buy books new so I missed the release of book 3 in the series. I'm now #8 on the library request list for it. :)
The first is "The Shop on Blossom Street" (http://www.amazon.com/Shop-Blossom-Street-Knitting-Books/dp/0778321606/ref=pd_sim_b_shvl_img_3/002-1630028-3996802)
Followed by "A Good Yarn" (http://www.amazon.com/Good-Yarn-Knitting-Books/dp/0778322955/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_b/002-1630028-3996802) and "Back on Blossom Street" (http://www.amazon.com/Back-Blossom-Street-Knitting-Books/dp/0778324516/ref=pd_sim_b_shvl_img_1/002-1630028-3996802)

I'm in.
I couldn't find any of the books you guys recommended but I did find a knitting and crocheting for dummies kit. It comes with a couple sets of needles, crochet hook and a ruler thing with holes (I am guessing to measure the needles as they fit in the holes?) and some little round colored pieces and two blue rubber eraser looking things. I also bought a pair of size 10 needles as they were recommended for the scarf in the book.
As of last night I have about 4 hours in and have gotten VERY frustrated...lol
I was trying to get the purl stitch down to do the cable knit and didn't look at the pic well and kept making the garter stitch as I was under the left needle. I felt like such an idiot when I was almost in tears and dh came and re-read everything and figured out what I was doing wrong. So instead of having 6 garter stitches on the end I have about 16. Oh well as long as I repeat it on the other end of the scarf who will know the difference.,...:P
I have a couple questions for you experienced bee's out there. I am getting loose ends. At the end of nearly every row the yarn is loose and not nearly neat. Can any of you tell me what I may be doing wrong? Also what are the plastic circles and the blue erasers?
Thank you for any advice. :hugs:
ETA: I also found out that Nana's blanket is crocheting... I am gonna hold out a couple of weeks til I get the knitting down before I take a stab at the crocheting.

YAY! Welcome!
I can only help with 2 of your questions. I believe the plastic circle to which you refer is a stitch marker. It is to help you keep count of what you're doing. So, when you need to remember where you were (for instance, "I started HERE.") you place a stitch marker. The thing you're calling a plastic eraser is...I think to be placed on the end of a double pointed needle (DPN) when you want all of the stitches to stay on. It's sort of an improvised/removable "end of needle".

Aha! Now I will just have to find a project to use them.
Thank you!
I found a pattern for a Santa hat if anyone is interested for the upcoming season. It said that it can be made in 2 hours....
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/125/330428336_788298013a_m.jpg
Materials:
1 skein Red Heart Light & Lofty, “Puff” (you actually need much less than a full skein.)
1 skein Lion Brand Homespun, “Candy Apple” (much less needed)
US 11 straight needles
Yarn needle
Pompom maker (or just use cardboard like I do)
The gauge is really hard to tell with the L&L; I just winged it and it turned out OK. Looks as if I was getting about 2.5 stitches/inch. The Homespun gauge is smaller but it didn’t seem to matter.
Cast on 44 stitches in the white yarn.
K all (garter stitch) for 1.5 - 2 inches, whichever you prefer.
Change to red yarn.
Knit stocking stitch until the cap is 4″ tall.
Decreasing:
* K1, SSK, K until 3 sts left, K 2 together, K1
P all
Repeat from * until you have decreased to 12 sts.
Break yarn, leaving about an 18″ tail, then pull the leftover yarn through the last stitches to make the tip of the hat. Sew up the seam down the back of the hat.
Make a pompom with the white yarn and attach it to the top of the hat.
Voila! Santa’s hat!
A note about the hat: by doing the decreases this way you end up with a hat that is a right triangle. This means that the hat is longer in the back. For a Santa hat that looks just fine. But if you want it to be more normal-shaped you just put the decreases all the way around instead of on the edge. The picture to the left is the baby version of the hat, which uses this method.
Baby Santa hat (Same materials used):
CO 32 sts
K all (garter stitch) for 1.5 - 2 inches, whichever you prefer.
Change to red yarn.
Knit stocking stitch until the cap is 4″ tall.
*K2, K2tog, repeat from * to the end of the row. (24 sts remain.)
P all.
K all.
P all.
K all.
P all.
*K1, K2tog, repeat from * to the end of the row. (16 sts remain.)
P all.
K all.
P all.
*K2tog, repeat from * to the end of the row. (8 sts remain.)
P all.
K all. (You can keep on in stocking stitch for as many rows as you like to make a floppy point,or just stop here.)
Break yarn, leaving about an 18″ tail, then pull the leftover yarn through the last stitches to make the tip of the hat. Sew up the seam down the back of the hat.
Make a pompom with the white yarn and attach it to the top of the hat.
Voila! Santa baby

Well the loose ends are probably just a result of losing tension on the ends. I don't know it's hard to tell without being there! But I know that every now and then I will get a loose end on a row of stitches. My problem is usually that I knit WAY too tightly.
I can't believe that you're already trying to cable... I haven't even tried that yet. :D Let me know how it goes!
The first thing that I ever knitted was a hat and it was just regular stockinette knitting in the round (on a circular needle). It was easy to do, I didn't have to worry about binding off yet, and I learned how to decrease. Plus a hat is much quicker to knit than a scarf. I've heard of lots of people getting tired of knitting straight in a row on a scarf...
This is my first project I ever knitted. :) It's really big because it was supposed to be for my husband.
Here's where I started out and I had a loose stitch. It eventually tightened up as I knitted more:

BJean, No I haven't joined yet as I am still a bit intimidated. But thank you for mentioning youtube, there are quite a few how-to's on there. One I found interesting was this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuRLFl36tDY&mode=related&search=) one about how to knit using the "continental" stitch. It looks pretty neat-o! I think I am fixing to rip out all of what I did last night and this afternoon as I am still getting those terrible loose ends and have noticed that there are three dropped stitches....ugggg....
I need a good video of someone soing the stockinette(?) stitch that shows how they turn thier yarn over etc to see if I am doing something wrong.
PG, the hat looks great(even with no makeup on;)) Do you have a pattern for it and do you have to use the circular needles? I only have three sets of straight. 10, 8 and 6. (Also I guess what I am doing is the stockinette as it looks like what you have on your hat.)
I think I have the casting on pretty much down as the third attempt set pretty well. But casting of I haven't attempted...lol, so we'll see.

BJean, No I haven't joined yet as I am still a bit intimidated. But thank you for mentioning youtube, there are quite a few how-to's on there. One I found interesting was this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuRLFl36tDY&mode=related&search=) one about how to knit using the "continental" stitch........
:applause: Yay! You are doing great! Some of the knitting sites have how to videos as well. I learned that way too. It's great to be able to stop and start the clips to see exactly what they are doing and sometimes one will explain something in a different way that finally makes sense. This thread is getting me in the mood to get those needles out again! :) That santa hat pattern is really cute!

Aw, thanks! I actually made it without a pattern. My friend told me what to do... Let me see if I can find one for you...
This one is actually MUCH cuter than the one I made....
http://knittingkninja.com/2007/08/08/basic-blue-hat/
It has the ribbing around the edge and it will help you with knitting and purling. Then it's just stockinette throughout the rest. stockinette is when you just knit over and over and it creates a smooth V pattern through the whole thing, and then on the other side it's bumpy.
I would also bookmark knittinghelp.com. She has video tutorials and the forums are also very quick to respond to any questions you might have that aren't covered under the video tutorials.

Ok. I am seriously about to throw this stuff in the garbage. :(
I am still getting the loose loops at the ends. I don't know if it is the way I am winding the first stitch around or what. Can anyone maybe explain what I need to do for the end right hand begin lefthand stitch. When I am making the garter stitch (I think, the one with the needle on the bottom) and the thread is on back and I have two/kindof a v with my ball string coming off the back where/what/ how do I place my ball string to make the begining/first loop.
Also how do I do the same for the begining on the purl (the one with the needle on top)? I am sorry if I am making no sense. I am just getting really frustrated and discouraged. I have the middle stitches down pretty well once I start going now, it's just giving me fits on the ends. My book doesn't have a thing to say about what I need to do and I can't find a vid of the actual process. (none of yall wouldn't be willing to make me a 30 second demo would you?) lol
I am a see and try visual hands on type not a read and try and figure it out. I am sorry for being an idiot. :( Thanks:hugs:
ETA: I saw a lady at my sons football game last night crocheting a beautiful ivory blanket that was huge. I wanted so bad to go and sit behind her so I could study. But I thought I would look like an idiot sitting behind her over her shoulder watching her crochet and not watching the ballgame.

Hmm I am kinda confused with what you posted... are you switching the yarn around to the back? With a garter stitch, you should just be knitting... And it sort of turns out like this:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1132/1352400396_b9cd1ad883_b.jpg
Is that what yours looks like?
If so, you shouldn't be making any "extra" loops, you should just be knitting the ones that are there. Have you been counting your stitches? Do you have the same amount of stitches that you started with?
When you flip your knitting over you should put the yarn in the back and just keep right on knitting.
Also how do I do the same for the begining on the purl (the one with the needle on top)? I am sorry if I am making no sense. I am just getting really frustrated and discouraged. Show me the pattern that you're knitting and I'll give it a try (I have some extra yarn and I can do it on my size 8 DPNS... I don't have tons of DPNs yet)... and see if I can get my friend to take a video or something... or borrow my inlaws video camera.
I am a see and try visual hands on type not a read and try and figure it out. I am sorry for being an idiot. :( Thanks:hugs:
And no, you totally aren't an idiot. Right now I am so frustrated with two projects... one being the short row on the heels of my socks. I have messed it up so many times and now I have a bunch of dropped stitches and I'm ready to tear out the whole sock and start over again. And then that blanket that I have pictured up there... I have a bit more of it done but that's a whole other story. I'm about ready to throw that out the window too!

I was on the verge of tears so many times it wasn't funny. My dh would stop and calm me and try to offer help where he could. I resorted last night to undoing the 10 or so inches(fourth try of more than a few inches)and started over just going to purl the entire thing and not have any change (since I could purl and not have the crazy loops)
I didn't get anything done today with the knitting so I decided to paruse the shelves at wally's and buy some inspiration yarn. (My 4yo wanted me to buy him yellow yarn so I could make him a hat :shake: poor baby has no clue what mommy has been through) I was just searching the net looking at patterns and trying to decipher the terms and went to look up what they meant and checked knittinghelp.com. From PG's recommendations. I was skimming through and noticed the vast selection of vids and started watching them all from the begining and about an hour into them
I skipped to look at the pics and what do I see..."Loose side stitches/Messy edges
Watch the above Demo of a small project, for tips on how to deal with this common problem. "

Thought this was nice, figured I'd share it... I apologize for the length.
THANK GOODNESS I’M A KNITTER
Today at work, for the umpteenth time, I listened to a child’s tale of
woe. The exact details may be different, but the underlying stories are
always the same…
….no one likes me
….I can’t do anything right
…. I just wish my mom would stop drinking
….I wish everyone would leave me alone
My magic wand is working overtime, and it’s not enough. There is no
magic to fix anyone’s problems. I can’t fix the people who are making
life miserable for this child, who have turned this child into someone
who creates his or her own problems.
But I do have a magic wand of sorts. It’s called a knitting needle.
Sometimes, I will purposely be knitting when a student comes to see me,
and of course they will ask about it, and say it’s cool, and I can offer
to teach them to knit. If there is a glimmer of interest, then I have my
foot in the door.
Sometimes the kids will see me wearing something I’ve knit, usually a
scarf, or maybe one of my felted bags. They want to know how to do it,
is it hard, could I teach them? You bet!
It’s a back door kind of way to give a kid some strength, some
ammunition for getting through hard times. I’m a gardener; I plant
seeds. I give kids ideas to think about. I try to give them a few skills
to glide through the pitfalls with a little more ease. I teach them to
knit for the same reasons that I would teach a child to read; because it
offers a world to escape to at times, because it offers some solace when
the world is hard to bear, because it gives a person some strength to
make weaknesses seem less harsh.
Thank goodness I am a knitter.

I finally finished my first bag! I had to rip out the handle and wing it because my bag was bigger around than the pattern. :coverlaf: oopsie. But it'll be good for it's intended purpose - grocery shopping bag for my vegan friend. I plan to make her several of these for Christmas.
Any tips on getting the handles to not look funky would be great. It's a chain of 50 that is attached to the other side and then 2 rows of SC are added. No matter what I do it seems to half-twist. Going to have to work on that...

Hi! Handles can be tough to get right. I would suggest buying a handle to crochet to the bag. I've never tried this but have read of others doing it: cut a lid to a Cool-Whip (or similar) bowl into the shape of a handle and then crochet single crochets around it and attach it to your bag.
AggieMom

Thanks! I wonder if I could just chain 50 (or whatever) and then do two more rows of single crochets and attach it... One of the attachments looks really good, but that half twist drives me nuts! My friend won't care but it bugs me.

I was thinking of using some pink yarn I already have but I can't think of a baby yarn made in brown that will be reasonably priced. If you know of a local yarn shop like Michaels, Joanns, Beverlys, or Hanncocks that would have the type and color I am looking for please pm me.
Like in the area of Sac, CA.

Never mind about the yarn as the person was okay if it was just pink as I already had one started.

Ok, I need a little advice.
Dd came home today and said that a boy in the other class rotation has cancer. ( I don't know what kind but dd is going to ask tomorrow) Apparantly he has been out for some time but the teachers are just telling the kids what is wrong with him. Dd said her class made up a care package today with a few things to cheer him up while going through his chemo. I want to make him a few caps but I am unsure as to how I should approach giving them to him as I don't know the family at all.
As d was telling me about the boy she said oh, you remember that boy that we saw getting the cans a few months ago? (We were house shopping this summer and we passed a blazer stopped on the side of the road while the dad sat in the drivers seat the kids were jumping out picking up cans.) I replied yes, she said that is him he is the one who is sick. My heart sank as I remember it being so hot that day and those kids jumping in and out picking those cans up and that boy trying to hide as we passed because he saw dd in our van.
So what I can gather is the family doesn't have much and I don't want them to feel like I am trying to shove something on them. Who knows, they may take anything with open arms or they might be offended. I don't know, but I think it is only right that I do this. It may not be much but as I told dh his hair is probably starting to fall out and it is starting to get cold down here. I think he might like having a few caps to put on wether he is cold or if he is not feeling good and doesn't want people looking at his head.
Anyway, What I am asking, do you think I should just make the caps and mail them or take them by his house, or do you think I should make a couple at first and send them to the school for the teacher to send?
Thanks for any advice.
Gray.

I would give them to his teacher to take home. The anonymity will make it easier to handle plus you can ask the teacher to see if the reaction is good and if it is, then approach them and offer to make more things for him and the other kiddos too!

I agree. Give the caps to your daughter's teacher and let the teacher be the liaison, if she's willing. By doing that, you take away the direct contact with a classmate/classmate's family.

I would love to learn to crochet, just to make stuff like this. Ana also makes these absolutely precious chickies in eggs in an egg container. Each egg has a face and personality as does each chick. The chicks fit in the eggs! http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=7578967

If you have time/inclination I would consider making caps/scarfs/mittens for all of the kiddos in the family (and maybe the parents too) I'm sure the boy will be self-conscious about the hair loss; maybe if they all receive/wear hats he won't feel so awkward. I have a few hats completed if you'd like to have them-let me know and I'll send them to you.

Thank you for the advice gals. I am going to call the teacher and ask her a few questions about the family and try to put together a small care package for them all. I have alot of freebies laying around that they may be able to use. I was going to let my oldest have the magic kit after the houseparty but I am going to see if he cares if I add it to the package for R.
And thank you redjen, that so thoughtful. I will contact you in a few weeks as soon as I can pull together a few hats and such. I don't know exactly how many kids there are I remember seeing two that day but I will ask dd's teacher if she can find out for me.
Again, thank you to you all.

Okay, I'm finally sharing some things I knit. :whee: The scarf and backpack are for Halloween. They might look kind of ugly in the pics, but they aren't in person. The bag has criss crossed straps on the back of it, but you can't see them in the photo. The flower on the red scarf was done by needle felting. :) There will be more plastic spiders added to the Halloween scarf before Halloween.

Fantastic!! I love the idea of adding spiders to it.

Fantastic! How hard was the fuzzy yarn to work with? I would go crosseyed I think.
I'm working on the yummiest blanket ever right now. I'll post pics when I get it finished. I finished the second grocery bag for my friend while I was flying to and from San Francisco last week.

Thank you for the kind words gals!
I really thought I would never get the hang of knitting now I can zip through a line in no time. :) I am making a hat that was to be my dd's but am going to give it to R's family. I am going to see if my mil still has the local paper as there is an article about the boy in there. I will scan it and let yall see what is going on it's just plain sad.
Aggiemom, No, the yarn wasn't that bad once I got used to using it. I had used the plain red heart yarn to begin with and kept messing it up and got frustrated and went to look for something different. My ds is all about the color yellow and I thought that yarn was adorable and knew he would love it. After tucking away the rainbow yarn, I just had it in my head that I was going to knit and took off. I made the cap in about three days,(with breaks of course). So if I can take it on for a first project you can do it with the excellent work you have done. ;)
Anyhoo, he loves it as does the 2yo loves his gween hat. Ds2 says his yellow hat is his big bird hat and proudly tells everyone that his mom made it.

Awww... I love that! :highfive: Big bird hat indeed!
I ended up ripping out the handle on bag #2 - I'll finish it up tonight. I improvised the first time on the handle and didn't remember where I'd changed the pattern. The opening was way too small when I got it done. Oh well... Live and learn!
I finished the baby blanket!! I had incentive - the mommy-to-be who got it is my 2 yr old's Godmother and she & her husband drove 5 hrs to be at my son's bday party yesterday. I worked like a mad woman last night and got it done. I hated to let it go - It was so snuggly and squishy and just plain yummy. There's really no better word to describe it. It's going to make a great "keep your dang hands off my newborn" stroller shield and will work great as a SIDS-proof blanket for naps. I may need to make a HUGE version for myself.
Here it is!!
