Hi, I have 30,000 miles under my name and 25,000 under my dad's and we both don't fly American. Can I use these miles to purchase anything? I hate to have them expire on me. Thanks for any suggestions

Sell them on ebay!
Can you sell them? I'd be willing to do that for sure. (anyone sold on ebay before?)

Or list on craigslist.
Also, you can apply for an AA credit card (and get more miles) and make a small purchase so that your miles don't expire. Note that AA credit card will have annual fee after one year, so you need to call them and change to a different card before the first year ends which gives you less miles, but no annual fee.

FYI on 'selling' miles...you (Dgumie) can 'share' miles thru the Aadvantage program legally - see their site for costs (about $150/30000); but you cannot actually sell the miles to anyone...the account is in your name and your identity is linked to those miles. Use them for shopping, hotels, car rentals, etc. See their website for 'redeem AA miles'. There are a few other airlines that you can exchange the miles with also; tho' at a heavily discounted rate usually. PM me if you want a site that might offer some exchange ideas if you really won't use the miles...but don't let them expire!! You've got just enough for 1 round trip for both of you in continental u.s.

there's a small fee for transferring miles to another advantage member. read the fine print first!

I'm in the same boat. I have enough for a flight, but don't particularly want to go anywhere they fly in my area (NY/NJ). Good info.

just got this off a frequent flyer newsletter
If you're looking to burn some AAdvantage miles, you might be interested in American's new routes. Flights from New York (JFK) and London (Stansted) have begun and there will be two flights per day starting April 7, 2008. There will be two new transatlantic routes from JFK beginning on May 1, 2008 to Barcelona and Milan. From Dec. 13, 2007, American will fly from Chicago to Buenos Aires, and domestically, look for new nonstop flights between Phoenix and Miami starting Dec. 13, 2007.

He doesn't have to sell the miles, just redeem the miles for a ticket for whoever pays him :-).

Go to points.com and you can redeem for gift cards I think if you register you get like 250 miles which extends the miles as well.

You may not get cash for this approach, but you will give much more than that. Because many wishes involve air travel donating your airline miles is a great way to help grant wishes. By donating your airline miles you’re helping the Make-A-Wish Foundation grant travel wishes that require an estimated 2.5 billion airline miles yearly.

My company sponsored a make-a-wish family at a NASCAR event. We got to bring an 8yr old kid with cancer into the winner's circle to meet his NASCAR hero who won the race. Just writing or talking about, even years after the event, still brings tears to my eyes.

I currently have 26,000 AA points which expire in march 2010. does anyone know how much I can get for them if I exchange it for an amazon gc on points.com?
