View Full Version : Please tell me that the PS3 can play music while I'm playing a PS3 game also...

So I've copied some music from my media server to my PS3 harddrive. I start the music playing and go to load a game and it automatically stops playing music once the game starts...
Please let me know if this is not the case...I haven't figured out how to do this yet and after reading up some it seems like it might not be possible yet...which is not cool on Sony's part. Didn't the PS1 even have this functionality?

No, the PS1 didn't have a hard drive, it could only play audio CDs. Not sure how you can have a CD and a game in the drive at the same time. I don't see why any console would/could offer this functionality. They put sounds and music in the games for a reason. (I don't own a PS3, I'm just offering my speculation)

I would want it. I'd play music in the background while playing PC games. Now whenever I hear certain NIN songs it reminds me of playing quake. Playing your own music particularly during multiplayer games where there isn't dialogue is a plus for PC games.

I have a PS3, and no, it isn't possible... yet... From what I've read and heard they may be working on a firmware update to allow you to access the main menu from within the games, thereby allowing you to play your own music during game play. I'm just not sure when that will be.
On a side note, I haven't seen a firmware update for about a month or so, so maybe the next one will be the 2.0 version.

There's one exception that made it possible on the original playstation, and that was (1) that you had a mod chip and (2) that you had a game that used CDDA tracks for music (which was somewhat common in early games.) You could then rebuild and burn the CD, replacing the original tracks with your own. I remember one game in particular that I loved, called "Vigilante 8" (a really good Twisted Metal clone). I had put Suicidal Tendencies' "You Can't Bring Me Down" on it, among other crazy twisted songs, and it was awesome. This was also possible on Dreamcast games if you had pirated rips of those.
Otherwise, why not bring in a separate radio/ipod/etc into the room and just play that while you mute the game music?

the 360 allows playing music (from hard drive) while playing a game.
PS3 has a pretty bad interface in terms of what you can do in-game. 2 main problem that I found (and am hoping to be updated soon) is that you 1) you can't message/chat with a PSN friend in-game, 2) you can't access your friends list in game, and 3) you can't play music in game.
For example...if you're playing a game, and someone sends you an invite "XXXX wants to chat", you will actually have to quit the game to talk to them. It is probably something that they're going to introduce later with @Home, kinda like how when the console was first released, they didn't have background downloading.

Can you turn the PS3 on and off from the controller? A friend told me you can't but I find it hard to believe.

Oh man, I remember doing that too!
Don't know of any current systems that let you do that, but I agree that it would be really nice for multiplayer. I guess people will argue that it would mean that you couldn't hear the SFX from the game (footsteps of other players, etc) but you could just have the music on low and the SFX on high.
Maybe it could be fixed through a software patch, but I'm not sure if developers would want to spend the extra time to code that.

Yes you can, if they're already synced

Actually they're trying to put that in--it is one of the top most-requested features for the PS3...if you ever bother looking at PS3 forums. It is not like the 360 can't do it.

Why would I look at forums for a system I don't own? :scratchh:

What you hear requested is "cross media bar access in-game" which essentially assumes things like being able to start a music track, chat, etc without leaving a game.
The most likely avenue to fulfill these wishes is when Playstation Home is released, and games specifically support some of its advanced features.

All 3 of those suck, but PSN is supposed to be exactly the same as LIVE right.
Nope, as far as in game PSN and LIVE aren't that different right now, but it's the little things like this that make LIVE better right now. If sony fixes these things that'll be a huge step forward.
Jack I don't know if he was specifically talking to you, I haven't checked out the PSN forums for a list of planned fixes and found the info useful. I'll have to check it out when I get home.

You do understand the 360 has been able to do this since launch? Heck, original XBOX could do that.
I was actually surprised to read you guys saying the PS3 can't. Honestly, I find that hard to believe.

Personally, I'd rather not be interrupted by messages while I'm playing games. Talking to people that are in the same game with me is all I would care about and of course that can be done.
But that will all come about. I'm betting they're putting all this into Home, and therefore aren't making it a priority in their updates until Home is ready to launch.

Home will probably be the 2.0 release. Any other patches to come out between now and then will probably be 1.9xxx.

I remember being able to play the original Ridge Racer with my own CD as the soundtrack. Once the game loaded you could take the game disk out and put in your CD. No modding needed. Not sure if any other games did that.

I did the same thing with RR.
I was just getting into burning my own CD's.
It was too sweet.
Anyway, I'd love to be able to play music off the PS3 HD in game.
Any info is much appreciated.

I think it is an option on Xbox to turn them off.

Resistance implemented multiplayer very well. They had in game messaging that you could send and read in between matches. It had the skill matching as well as allowed to join as teams. If warhawk had all the mutliplayer support Resistance did Warhawk would be that much better.
I think it'd be nice to at least get a notice you recieved a message in game, and be able to turn that off of course. I like how currently PSN shows you in game when a friend signs in, but it would be nice to at least be able to send them a message without exiting the game.

I was just thinking how it would be nice to copy a few albums to my ps3 harddrive and then start them playing and turn the game sounds off (for games that allow that).
Hopefully it will be in a future firmware update.
Thanks for the information.

Or leave the game sounds on but turn off the game music, most games have seperate levels for music, sfx, and voice.

...well, you did make the suggestion "Maybe it could be fixed through a software patch, but I'm not sure if developers would want to spend the extra time to code that." I was just letting people know what I saw on there, cause I doubt any sane person would check the PS3 forums, that place is a mess :lmao:

on certain games the xbox 360 allows that..

You can do it for some games. The game EXCITE TRUCK for wii has the capability to play a background music from a SD card. Again you have to do it from INSIDE the game.

Although this forum is over a year old, I thought I would ask this time. Any new updates?
BTW, when I googled this question, this forum came up.... :P

For custom soundtracks? Yes, but each game must add support for it. Two games I have that support it are Wipeout HD and High Velocity Bowling.

This was one of my favorite features on the original xbox. Breathed a lot of life into some games like GTA since you could have your own music radio station. Other games just had crap soundtracks and having your own was a blessing.
I am surprised this wasn't in the PS3 from the get go...
