No, she just returned the original purchase and the receipt that printed out said coupon not refundable. I specifically asked her to return and ring up the new item together.. she tried that, fiddled around and then just ended up returning it first. They should be sent back to learn the basic cashier functions.. Im mad, lost a perfectly good coupon :-(

My experience has been the same... They always carried over the coupon from the previous order. It seems to depend on the managers.

I rarely shop in-store, but when I exchanged few things last month, the coupon always showed up in the return/exchange receipt with its expiration date. I was told that as long as the coupon was still valid (i.e., before its expiration date) it would be applied to any order.

I even had a coupon re-applied after the expiration date passed (but then again I know Staples has a grace period on coupons redeemed in store, so maybe the coupon was not expired per-se), but that was my only item on the receipt. Perhaps the above poster had multiple items on the receipt and was exchanging just one of them?

It was just the S220 camera and a 25 cents clearance item to go above 150, I guess I just got unlucky with a clueless manager. She wasn't even the regular manager, she was some higher up on a special visit to store. Thanks for you input on this.. I guess it was just a coupon but I was expecting better knowledge from her.
