Oh you don't have to charge anything to that AmEx card. I dug an unused AmEx card out of my file cabinet too to do that one. To get the magazines:
1. dial the phone number
2. It asks for an AmEx credit card # to see if you qualify for the free magazines.
3. After it confirms that you are indeed an AmEx card holder, the automated system reads the titles of magazines and you get to pick 3.
4. Then you tell it your name and address.

I only did this recently so I can't confirm that it's working yet but others have reported luck. I don't use this card so it'll be easy for me to check online to see if any activity has posted to it (no charges to it so far).
