I am uploading the file to an online host for people to download from. Hopefully that will not violate SD's rules.
People should be careful... if we start downloading from links that aren't Grisoft, you can't guarantee what you're getting. It starts out by well-intentioned members trying to help out others, but down the line someone will provide a link to an executable that 'says' it's AVG Antivirus, when it turns out to be malicious software. And since you think it's safe, you'll disregard any warnings your computer might pop up.
Safest bet is to wait and download the official version from the original manufacturer's website. It's available until January 17, so just wait out the initial rush.

Reformat? No, almost nothing would ever cause you to reformat. Would you have to uninstall the Pro version before putting back on the free version (or conversely, uninstall the free version before putting on the Pro version)? I don't know.
This is a lot of excitement over a product that's for all intents and purposes identical to the free version. Faster downloads?!

Good point. This is how I am doing it and would advise the same to anyone who does not have an antivirus or even a non-reliable one!
1) Already have the free version from download[dot]com. You'll find it in their top 10 most popular downloads.
2) Install it and do a file update.
3) Now download the pro version from rapidshare or megaupload etc
On a side note -There have been times when I have been bombarded with certain viruses that shut down avg's exe from running and then there are some that avg is not able to 'unlock' (locked files). But, this is, by far the best one I have tried. My office machine uses some Norton Gold something and that one is mindblowing!!!

Here's another case where having Virtual PC 2007 installed and ready is helpful. Combine this w/ your suggestions, and you can have a high degree of confidence AND not potentially muck up your system w/ the free install, download, uninstall or overwrite, etc. I just do everything in the VM, if all is ok, I delete the results and install on the actual host.

By the way this is a good program that is especially good for people who have computers with 512 mb ram or slower. It runs in the background and does not take up too much space. This program vs Avast I would say they are very similar but this is free so go for it right now. Another very good program that will never let anything through is ESET NOD32 aka ESET Smart Security.

Yes its for the free ed but how much better is this pro ed.?
That review applies to version 7.1. This is 7.5.

Wondering what useful features are in the Pro version. I don't need any foreign language support, tech support, or fast update d/l's (the Free version is fast enough for me.) So what's the *real* benefit of this version over the Free one? The one thing I'd like to see are more scheduling options - other than scan once per day or not at all.

I personally don't see how the pro version is any better or more useful to us slickdealers at home - when was the last time you used the support no. to call an anti-virus company?
I'll stick with the free version, thank you. :)

They were reviewing the free one, and they rated performance as fair. The pro version is faster. Anyone that ranks symantec above anyone else's product isn't getting taken serioulsy by me. The fact that AVG is free for home users, and symantec hassles the shit out of you for money is a factor here, as well as symantecs intrusiveness, especially how it fills up the registry with bogus entries. Anyone besides me ever have to uninstall symantec manually? Jesus Christ! They just spam the registry with crap for days, hoping that their product will work!

One thing that hasn't mentioned is that the Pro version doesn't have the personal use restrictions. Eg: AVG Pro doesn't bomb out when you try to install it on a Domain.

Norton does a good job, so does Kaspersky, and McAfee, and just about every other program out there...but they only work if they are kept UPDATED, with the paid programs like McAfee, Norton, and Kaspersky, people neglect to renew the license and then I am the one that sees them...when I remove viruses and often reformat. The way I am as a computer tech is to give the customer AVG because I know they will let Noraffesky lapse...I don't live anywhere long enough to worry about repeat customers :lmao:
As far as I'm concerned, this is a slick deal...when the download works. Even slicker to me is Webroot for free, I'm determined to get that one ;)

absolutely correct...all those big names, with the 'free' software, which you have to periodically suscribe to, with the exception of a few, but definitely Symantec and ZoneAlarm are pains to maintain/get rid of, avoid spam from. I've been a user of AVG for the past few years and have had no issues..I dont 'stumble upon' some no name russian porn site to get infected by something only the big names can. As for firewall, Comodo gives me better piece of mind than ZoneAlarm, performs better too.
The op and people who are jumping on this deal that offers you 'more languages' and 'tech support' must be the same ones who vote for the likes of Bush. Think before you utilize.

It doesn't market like the "big name" companies do. If AVG came preinstalled on every Dell sold and forced sub's down your throat, it would probably be in the top 3 :)

I've personally used BitDefender 08 Total Security, and I hated it. I've a pretty advanced user myself, and BitDefender, is just the weak. It has a poor firewall, it's Anti-Virus is ok, and it's a ton to run.
I use Symantec Protection and ZoneAlarm, + AdAware 2007
If I can add Webroot to my collection, this would be one sweet deal!

avg pro is great. nice post!
I've used the free version and it's not very good in my opinion. Seems the only difference is support and you can use it commercially. I had two machines get infected while using the free version, something Kaspersky has never allowed. If you want to eventually format and reinstall by all means use this product but I'll never let it on any comp I use or sell.

I was a Spysweeper fan until a year ago. Spysweeper now blocks iTunes from talking to other iTunes installations on my network. I now use Spyware Doctor with no problems...
I'm not trusting AVG due to it's middling performance and long lag times in adding required features and detection elements. Nod32 for techheads, and Kaspersky for set-it-and-forget-it people (the majority of computer users) are the way to go.
thanks op and thanks to the rap and meg up. would this work on vista ???

i suppose nobody cared that it was not a Grisoft site - I tried to ask people about it but people just rush in - I have used the free version for many years and recommended it hundred of times but many here just see free-- and charge off. I hope I am wrong and everything is on the up and up. Moving the download to another site does not even allow others to know that the original link did not appear to be the Grisoft site - take care when you load something like this. I am probably over cautious - as an example - I have a second hard drive that contains my banking information and use it only when I am doing on line money functions and when finished - off it goes

Basically, I had norton with about 5 months still left on it... Ditched it for AVG free, which picked up about 10 viru/trojans that a fully updated norton didnt. Then I bought AVG internet suite for 50$, with 50$ in rebates, so free. AVG doesnt make your system take about 5 minutes to load, and doesnt use up nearly the memory, while still finding things that norton would not.

If some of the differences between free and pro versions are faster updates/downloads & technical support, then if the embedded serial is identical for each of our installation, then I can only assume that we all can't contact AVG for technical support. And if the serial gets blacklisted, then we also would not get any further update.

Firewall = ZoneAlarm free (http://www.zonealarm.com/store/catalog/products/sku_list_za.jsp)
Spyware Removal = Spybot Search & destroy free (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html) in conjunction with:
Ad-Aware free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad_aware_free.php). Neither Ad-Aware or Spybot alone will remove everything but together they are very powerful, run them both weekly.

For a firewall you have to consider your needs- would the built in Windows firewall work best or do you want one with a few more bells and whistles? You will need to try a few to see which you like best and which work best on your system. Some people like ZoneAlarm free for a pretty basic firewall. Then there are the older firewalls such as Kerio and Sygate. Firewalls that provide leak-prevention as well as intrusion prevention (HIPS) include Comodo and Online Armor. My favorite XP firewall is Online Armor. It unquestionably provides the best leak prevention and has a mature HIPS feature which can be disabled. Also their support at the forum is pretty good.
As for an anti-spyware, get the one in this thread- SpySweeper if you can. You probably will not find a better free anti-spyware program that provides realtime protection. But it looks like it may need a license key from a magazine, if so just try either Spybot Search and Destroy or Spyware Terminator for realtime protection. Also, download the free SuperAntiSpyware for on-demand scans once a week or so. SAS is coming out with version 4.0 in a few weeks and that release will just build more space between it and the next best anti-spyware program. Don't waste your time with Ad-aware unless you have a reason to taking up space on your computer with useless programs.
Finally, if you are running IE as your browser, download the free Spyware Blaster from javacool. SB does not "run" but just ads active-x and tracking cookies sites to your restricted list in your browser. You just have to update manually once a month or so.

WTF? Are you dumb? Any reviews that put McAfee and Norton above AVG are retarded. Have you ever even loaded McAfee or Norton Security on your system? Did you notice your system come to a crawl? Did you notice everything moves like glue? AVG is very low on resources, automatically updates everyday with the new virus definitions, and is a good all around virus protection program IMO.

Bit Defender has a large, loyal following of users that swear by the product. Since that review, BD has come out with version 10 and version 2008. Don't take PCworld's reviews very seriously. They have McAfee above Kaspersky, how in the world can that happen? Also, where is Avira Premium and NOD32 on the list? I see the free Avira is there, though.
I am not sure how any of the products make that list as the best free offer of that time was AOL's active virus scan which was using the Kaspersky engine.

The '08 version of Norton uses less resources than last year. Don't know about McAfee.

Is it possible to have AVG and Nod32 installed on a pc?
Doubtful. I would say it's WAREZ, someone hacked the SN. If it's legit the mfg would have it on thier site for download.
I believe computeractive, vnunet, etc buy licenses to give away on their site. It is not just the original manufacturer that gives away the licenses- but a way of building up site traffic as well to these giveaway sites. They are just hoping that you build confidence with their site and later make purchases- either through click throughs or on their site directly.

I have used this free virus protection for six months now and it is great. I schedule complete scan while sleeping. The best part is that its free.
A virus scanner that has scheduling abilities and/or knows when you are sleeping? Revolutionary!! :lmao:
So is this one of those downloads where the license key is in a magazine?
Does anyone know? It has been asked several times in this thread.

Been using free version om my XP desk top for years and so far happy with it. Got a vista laptop few months back and installed as well.
Question is scanning time on desk top XP takes about 20 - 30 min but on vista laptop takes about 2 hr. Is it normal?
Also they have Webroot Spy Sweeper 5.5 available for free:

Is the license key for Spy Sweeper embedded or emailed? Or is it in a magazine?

I used to work at a University IT support. For most users (college students), I think AVG is enough. Norton is slow, can't argue about that. McAfee is free from our school, and faster. AVG is free to public and fast.
I mean, if you use limewire and other peer to peer sharing program, you can never get enough protection. Easy on the illegal downloads everyone. Just my $.02

LOLOL, "Steve", anyone who thinks this free POS program is better than McAfee or Norton has their head up their A and is a cheapskate. EVERY review has AVG toward the bottom and never above the better ones. My computer works fine with Norton and McAffee (not at same time) because some of us have a newer computer with a lot of RAM (if you know what that is). Your heap of junk Commodore 64 with 128 MB RAM is of course gonna be slowed by a real virus scanner, not some el cheapo one.

AV-comparatives tested AVG anti-malware which is essentially the free/pro avg anti-virus engine/signatures and their anti-spyware combined into one product. AVG anti-malware certainly compares favorably with McAfee but falls a bit short of Norton's results. Either way AVG anti-malware is far less intrusive a product than either McAfee or Norton.

I believe the only free version of Spy Sweeper is their online scan. So there is a real big difference between paid vs free as with the paid you get a program, real time protection, auto or manual scans, updates, etc. You may be thinking of another product like AVG anti-spyware, ad-aware 2007, SuperAntiSpyware or PC Tools Spyware Doctor which all have paid and free versions.

Not because Linux is inherently any more secure, of course, but because no one would ever bother trying to exploit it. Same for OS/X (built on a similar platform), which also had a worse year (much worse) in terms of number of vulnerabilities compared to Windows, but again, when there are hundreds of millions using one platform and 7 using the other, it's easy to choose which one to go after.

This is really not close, KAV by a landslide. KAV av includes protection for spyware, pretty much all malware- virus, trojan horses, rootkits, keyloggers. The AVG Pro will provide protection mainly against viruses, worms and trojans. Both products have heuristic detection but KAV's is much better. Plus KAV has the Iswift and Ichecker which will be able to scan your system in a matter of just a few moments.
On the nagative side of KAV is the recent chkdsk issue and KAV places object ID's in your registry to allow for the faster scanning. These Object ID's will remain behind, even if you decide to uninstall KAV. You will manually have to remove them, although leaving them in your registry does not have any undesired side effect known as of yet- unless you get the chkdsk issue.
If you want to try KAV I would suggest you download the 30 day trial of KAV and give it a whirl. If you like it just enter the license code from your amazon disk. If you do not really like it you can go back to avg. If KAV's leaving behind the object ID's turns you off then just stick with AVG. Also, the chkdsk issue is something you will become aware of if it applies to your computer. Some reports have KAV starting up chkdsk and taking forever to complete- sometimes not completing as it hangs. Others claim the chkdsk only happens when they run chkdsk which most users have no need to ever do. I recently had Kaspersky and chkdsk was never an issue.
The final thing about KAV is that if you are running a firewall your prompts may be affected as all outgoing connections go through KAV. Comodo recently updated their firewall to address this issue. If prompts for outgoing connections is of no concern to you then don't worry about this issue. If it is then you may want to contact your firewall vendor to see if it is compatible with KAV.
Finally, if you want to stick with AVG but would like an upgrade in protection you may want to try AVG anti-malware. That product incorporates their excellent anti-spyware program with their anti-virus program. It is lightweight and maybe not so intrusive as KAV.
Frys had AVG's internet security suite on sale for $19.99 after rebate. You would probably have no problem selling your KAV if you so desired.

I'll post this & not reply to any debate.
All major name AVs are equal overall in protecting you from viruses. Your best bet then is a free AV (like AVG) &/or AV that uses less resources than crap like Norton & McAfee (so use AVG or Computer Associates).
There's no real advantage in the paid vs free AVG, so why risk a trojan or rootkit from an unknown site? I won't.
AV tests/reviews are highly questionable. I don't trust their integrity. Here's the gimmick. The tests include trojans at times, not just viruses. There is no such thing as any AV that adequately protects against trojans. In truth an AV protecting you from trojans is not a good thing because it creates a false sense of security & just makes the scan take longer. Some AVs may have received advanced notice of what's on tests, & others may have loaded more trojan sigs temporarily before a test cycle (then removed those sigs to speed the scanning).
No AV can adequately protect you from trojans because the scan would take a long time & would make them uncompetitive to the average user who doesn't understand this. So the marketing people use terms like added protection against trojans. Added protection doesn't mean complete or even near adequate protection. All they're doing is adding some common trojan signatures.
So in addition to your AV you need a separate AT (Anti Trojan). For that you can use the free AVG Antispyware (formerly Ewido).
One more thing. Turn off the email scanning on your AV. It's a useless marketing gimmick that slows your email client & can cause conflicts. One AV started it long ago & the others followed just to stay competitive to the average user. You are protected realtime without that.

WOW, that's a lot of assumptions to make from a couple of sentences.
Guess what:
*I dual boot Windows.
*I hand built my computer 3 months ago with brand new components. Do you want to compare systems? Is it a disadvantage that I can use linux on a 15 year old computer? I'm sorry that you're forced to scrap computers only a couple years old because your favored monopoly built a more bloated than ever operating system which requires even more resources just to give you a sense of "security."
Are you one of those people that can't figure out how to boot from a live-cd? Couldn't even burn the cd? Scared away from a command line? Too lazy to learn something new? Or just too damn stupid to investigate on your own? Don't worry, you might figure it out one day.

For all of those people out there thinking Norton and McAfee are the greatest things invented since the 2Gb ram stick. Take a look at av-comparatives.org.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/
Yes, AVG isn't on the top, but compared to Norton and McAffee it is much better.
All those people thinking Im on Commodore 64, its actually a Picodore64. I love it and AVG Anti Virus runs great.
Just because your new shiny computer you buy at the store comes with Norton or McAfee Security and a bunch of other crap software doesn't make it the best. They pay big money to be put on your bloated computer.
Oh ya, just because you have a lot of system resources to burn, does that mean you should do it? You people are talking about Norton and McAfee running on your fast computers. Did you know it could run just a little bit faster with AVG and be better protected.
Getting a free antivirus software from AVG is not a bad thing. You dont have to spend your hard earned money on your antivirus software. Look at what forum you are on. This forum is for cheap people, being cheap does not denote ignorance.... This place is for cheap people who want great products at awesome prices IMO.
Educate yourself, read about the product, cross compare, check twice.

I agree that email scanning is somewhat overrated - just as web scanning is. Those may appear to provide an extra layer of security but may actually not. Also for an anti-trojan program to be effective you need one with realtime protection. The only legitimate free trojan specific program I am aware of at the moment is Comodo's BOclean.
In that regard it is very difficult to ignore the results of online tests. Some tests are certainly more legit than others. But I think a huge vendor like McAfee regularly scoring in the middle of the pack shows that these tests can have legitimate results. That's opposed to some online sites that sometimes appear to base tests results on advertising revenue.
I do not think all av's are equal, especially computer associates brand. They are not listed on av-comparatives for a reason, they do not meet the minimum requirements for detection rates. At their last av-comparative test CA had an overall detection rate of 65%.
The real issue is that people who download carelessly from the internet, click any hyperlink in an IM, etc are bound to get infected with something eventually. Every year there seems to be the release of an anti-malware product that will protect everyone from everything. A few years ago it was HIPS, then came sandboxes, now people are using rollback/restore programs. What is coming next is anyone's guess. But malware creators are staying a step ahead of anti-malware vendors by creating more sophisticated monsters all the time.
Those that are safe surfers probably don't need much more than basic protection. That would include a firewall (hardware if possible), antivirus/antispyware, IE7 on Vista in protected mode or an alternative browser such as Opera or Firefox and a fist full of common sense.
