I think the best indication is whether it says "by" or "as made famous by."

Seems your both right. The ones with *'s all say "as made famous by" so I would consider those to be covers.
That Oasis pack might be the straw that broke my wallet and force me to finally go buy Rock Band.

I'd buy alot more RB songs if there was a way for me to play them simply as music. They're more expensive then itunes, it'd be nice to be able to at play the tunes without having to play the game.
I brought this up on the wishlist thread at www.rockband.com.

MTV Games has announced that Rock Band players have purchased more than 2.5 million downloadable game levels since the game's November 20, 2007 launch, a player base that, according to NPD figures, has broken a million through December across both the Xbox 360 and PS3.
The latest NPD figures, quoted in a release from Microsoft, show that Rock Band has sold 463,000 units for the Xbox 360 and 174,000 units for the PS3. This is in addition to the total 382,000 units across both platforms sold in November. No figures for the PS2 version of the game have yet been made publicly available, though that version has no support for DLC.
Among the total player base, MTV says that the Metallica download pack, featuring the tracks "Ride The Lightning," "Blackened" and "And Justice For All," is currently the top-selling download. MTV says it will continue to release downloadable music levels weekly through 2008 through song packs, albums and individual tracks, with pricing varying from 80 to 240 Microsoft points.
MTVN Music Group/Logo Films president Van Toffler commented, "Our goal with Rock Band was to create an entirely new way for people to interact with the music they love. The incredible response to the downloadable content we've released to date motivates us even more to establish this platform as a way for people to discover new, up and coming artists through the game - in addition to delivering great game play experiences set to the music of mega-artists."

MTV has just announced that they plan to release stand alone expansion packs for those who do not have internet access.
MTV has told Reuters that once full albums start hitting and more and more artists are brought onboard, they'll be releasing standalone expansions. MTVN's Van Toffler:
We are talking to tons of bands, from indie to the most established ... to release not necessarily their entire catalog, but maybe some of their classic albums and do special packages around that.

Has anyone found any info on what the difficulties are for all the downloadable songs? I've looked and haven't really been able to find a good list. I'd like to know the difficulty of a song before I download it so I don't end up with a bunch of super difficult songs until I unlock all the songs in the world tour mode. I'm new to rythm games, and am only a medium guitarist right now.
If nobody else knows I say we start gathering one here.
After each song list the difficulty for each part for example:
Song. Artist Difficulty
Roxanne. The Police. G: 2, D: 4, V: 3
Wherer G: is guitar, D: is drums, V: is vocals.
The difficulty is:
Warming Up is a 1, each additional difficulty level is one higher.
The numbers I used for Roxanne were made up, once I get home I'll go through my downloaded songs and start making the list.

The best way I could say it is, guitar hero isn't forwards compatible or the rock band guitar isn't backwards compatible. I'm thinking it is the latter.
Anyhow, for not, there is no real way around this that is publicly available as of yet.

Harmonix has said that the Rock Band guitar won't work on G.H. because G.H. only allows certain licensed guitars to work on it.
Harmonix is pushing for an open guitar standard so that both G.H. and R.B. guitars will be cross compatible.
If activision and G.H. weren't blocking a patch to allow the G.H. guitar to work on R.B. for the PS3 I'd probably buy G.H.3, but since it won't work I refuse to buy G.H.3 and even emailed activision.
Activision is the publisher of G.H.

I don't know, "Losing My Religion" may top "Stand" only because that's when they took off and having to not only listen to that song on the radio non-stop but hear newly minted fanboys claim how it's the best REM song ever filled me with an intense desire to pull my hair out.

The only advantage it has is that it doesn't repeat the title 5,000 times.
But, yes, it's annoying. I'd be happy if the B-52s and REM were both permanently banned.

It probably is in their best interest to keep it up since they're speculating that its a platform unto itself like Sega CD or 32x is to Sega Genesis. Well, you get the idea but I think this is showing more success than those two failures. lol :whee:
In essence, each song is basically a game cartridge. A short game at it but if you were to calculate amusement as dollars to minutes, it can far exceed a lot of craptacular games.

I disagree. it's better to wait because people will buy what is available.. then something good will come out, and it'll make them buy more songs...
if you look at march's releases.. a majority of the songs are from high-end artist.. which they know will sell itself, or maybe even the game to people who don't own RB yet

This week's batch of Rock Band DLC is a triumvirate of Trent Reznor's industrial flare. It was noted in an copy of Official Xbox Magazine from late January, although for a March 18 release. The songs (all master tracks):
Nine Inch Nails pack (440 MS points / $5.49)
* March Of The Pigs -- (160 MS points / $1.99)
* The Collector -- (160 MS points / $1.99)
* The Perfect Drug -- (160 MS points / $1.99)
The songs will be available next Wednesday for Xbox 360 and Thursday for PlayStation 3. Videos of each found after the break. (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/22/rock-band-weekly-nine-inch-nails-three-pack/)

I HATE the Police. The only decent song was on GH3 already so I don't need it on Rock Band too.
There is sooo much possibility with RB.
The prob is that we all like different genres of Rock. Sure there have been some packs avail, but doesn't mean I like all of the groupings.
I wasn't a Knack fan either, but My Sharona was fun to play.

I did NOT like the NIN pack. Perfect drug was retarded to play. There was a point at which it just plain didn't make any sense. The fact that the songs picked are synthesized for the majority of their playtime makes it really hard to relate what you're doing to the song as it's being played...
I love NIN, but really didn't like the pack.

Rock Band to receive Earache thrash next week
Hmxsean just posted next week's Rock Band DLC over on the official forums and all we can say is be prepared for some Earache thrash.
On Tuesday, March 18th Harmonix will release an Earache Thrash Pack to the XBLM for 440 Microsoft points comprised of three master tracks from Earache Records bands. Ear-aching master tracks including "Blinded By Fear" by At the Gates, "Thrasher" by Evile and "D.O.A." by The Haunted. As always, each chunk of musical DLC can also be purchased separately for 160 Microsoft points. And if you couldn't tell, yes we do have a frown on our face from today's announcement. Ever since we knew "D.O.A." was headed to Rock Band thanks to a little leak, we figured it would be from the Foo Fighters. Obviously, we were wrong. Hopefully The Haunted's "D.O.A." is equally enjoyable.

This week's DLC is now up for score-tracking:
* Blinded By Fear by At the Gates

Each song costs $1.99 (160 Microsoft Points). Available on the Xbox LIVE® Marketplace and PLAYSTATION®Network.
Chart preview video links will be added as they become available. Enjoy!

You absolutely MUST grab the boston pack... especially if you play drums. This has been one of the most entertaining to play packs I've ever seen.
Songs have a lot of fun parts in them w/enough normal rhythm to recover from most tricky parts... so you get to test your skills, but keep on playing.

Due to work Sony is doing on their store they won't be adding new material for a couple weeks so this won't release on PlayStation Store this week. Rock Band debuts Motley Crue 'Saints of Los Angeles' single
Late last night, we received a Rock Band DLC surprise with Harmonix announcing that a Motley Crue Rock Band track will be releasing XBLM today, April 15th. But the track isn't from Motley Crue's catalog of old music, it's actually their latest single "Saints of Los Angeles" making it the first single ever to make a Rock Band premiere. You can grab "Saints of Lost Angles" for the promotional price of 80 Microsoft points sometime later today when the normal Rock Band DLC hits the XBLM. Nice!

“Date With The Night” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (master)
“It Hurts” by Angels & Airwaves (master)

Fresh Off the Presses!
Fallout Boy is tempting with the singer green lighting it and possibly the second guitarist
The other two, I don't know. Maybe the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and not too sure about Angels and Airwaves. Overall Fairly Decent.

Rock Band DLC welcomes Blondie Clash Youth
There's no better way to end the week than with a hefty helping of confirmed Rock Band downloadable content for next week. It's one of those small things that makes life all the more enjoyable and brighter. Anyway, let's get to it. Next Tuesday, May 13th Harmonix will be adding "Hanging on the Telephone" by Blondie, "Train in Vain" by The Clash and "Kool Thing" by Sonic Youth to the Rock Band DLC library. Each track will be 160 Microsoft points and only available individually, which means no money saving three pack for you. So ... yippy for Blondie?

Why do they keep churning out such crap? Ok.. so they like oldschool stuff... they like some indie stuff... that's great. Move on!!
Don't keep releasing one or two of only THREE songs per week from this crap. If we got 10-20 songs a week, that would be one thing.. but we get 3 precious slots for songs, and they pick absolute crap.

Rock Band Weekly: Jimmy Buffet and Disturbed
This, this may actually be the weirdest Rock Band Weekly ever. This week we get a combo platter of Jimmy Buffet and Disturbed. Our brain actually gave up for the rest of the week on this news, so we've really got nothing else left to add. But, we have pulled out the crushed ice and lime juice and are ready to waste away the weekend. This gives us hope that one day we'll get Abba Gold as a DLC album. Harmonix, make it so!
Two packs: Buffet (440 Microsoft Points / $5.50) and Disturbed (240 MS points / $3)
* "Margaritaville" - Jimmy Buffett (160 MS Points / $2)
* "Cheeseburger in Paradise" - Jimmy Buffett (160 MS Points / $2)
* "Volcano" - Jimmy Buffett (160 MS Points / $2)
* "Indestructible" - Disturbed (80 MS Points / $1)
* "Inside the Fire" - Disturbed (80 MS Points / $1)
* "Perfect Insanity" - Disturbed (80 MS Points / $1)
Videos for these tracks can be found after the break (one Disturbed video may be NSFW). DLC will be available next Tuesday and Thursday for Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively.

July 15th, Rock Band gets The Who DLC
You've been waiting for it, you've been demanding it and you've been whining for it for the past year. Rock Band downloadable content from The Who will officially be making its way into the Rock Band DLC library on Tuesday, July 15th. Woo-Who!
Confirmation of The Who DLC comes from the official press release announcing Rock Band 2, where they mention that twelve songs from The Who including "My Generation" and "Who Are You" will release to the XBLM for $1.99 a track (160 MS points) or as a bundled download for $19.99 (1600 MS points). Note though that The Who DLC will NOT be the entire Who's Next album but will instead be a compilation of twelve tracks. The reason being that (as rumored) they had troubles locating the master recordings of certain songs. No matter though, we're getting twelve tracks from The Who, so be happy!

While it may not include all your favorite Who tracks (Sup, Pinball Wizard?) it does have a wide assortment of awesomeness.

Rock Band Weekly: Red Hot Rush Edition
You didn't think all this talk of Rock Band 2 made us forget about the beloved original, did you? This week in Rock Band Weekly, Harmonix brings us a double-shot of Rush and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Rock Band tracks drop Tuesday, July 8, for 160MS Points ($2) a piece.
* "Closer to the Heart" - Rush
* "Working Man (Alternative Cut)" - Rush
* "Snow (Hey, Oh)" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
* "Tell Me Baby" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
All releases this week are master tracks, a trend we like seeing continue with Rock Band. Rock Band enthusiasts will remember a cover-cut of "Working Man" was already made available in previous Rock Band DLC, but this alternative cut is all Rush.

Rock Band Weekly: Staind, Testament, Scars on Broadway, The New No 2
Harmonix announced its tracks for next week's Rock Band DLC and it's a slathering of metal. Yes, we're sure there's a better way to describe these bands than just saying "metal." Alternative metal? Post-modern alternative metal? Thrash pre-philosophy metal? Alternative existential rock? We can't keep track of sub-genres anymore.
Individual songs (160 MS points/ $2)
* "They Say" - Scars on Broadway (160 MS points/ $2)

Rock (Band) out to Megadeth and RB Tour DLC
Just as was announced last week, earlier this morning Harmonix released a bunch of new Rock Band DLC (which is also Rock Band 2 DLC, because DLC works for both games don'tcha know) onto the XBLM featuring an entire album from Megadeth and a few select songs from the artists of the Rock Band Tour. Note too that the 880 Microsoft point Megadeth album Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? is the entire album EXCEPT for the title track "Peace Sells" because it is a part of the Rock Band 2 setlist. View all the DLC goodness after the break.

Rock Band DLC: Rush has arrived!
Available for purchase off the XBLM is super new Rock Band downloadable content including Rush's long awaited Moving Pictures album in its entirety. But it isn't only Rush music this week (though, we don't think anyone would complain if it was), because there are also a few other random tracks that'll wet your Rock Band whistle with refreshing melodies. All tracks are individually priced for 160 Microsoft points and if you're up for it, you can grab the Moving Pictures album in one value fueled fell swoop for 880 MS point. Complete DLC listing after the break.
