I'm sitting here watching the CNN repub debate and I am acutely aware of how the corporate media steers the selection of candidates.
In a fair and even-handed debate, each candidate would get equal time and equal exposure.
Instead what you have is the camera having sex with Romney's and McCain's mugs while Huck and Paul are set out in long shots and look like the fugly girl at the dance. I especially love how they focus on the bald spot on Huck's head from the rear & make a point to show Paul scribbling like a mad school boy taking notes.
The questions are posed to McCain and Romney and they eat up nearly all the time with their back and forth bickering. Occassionally Paul & Huck get a bone tossed to them but as fast as you can say "If it bleeds it leads" the cameras zoom back to, and the drilling of the candidates focuses back on, the annointed.
It's subtle, it's devious, but what CNN is telling you is don't waste time or votes on those two losers on the end because we believe they aren't interesting enough to even be in the debate and we only allowed them because they haven't had the good sense to drop out already.
We, CNN, will of course continue to ask the really important questions of McCain and Romney, such as what color of underwear do they prefer, white briefs or striped boxers.

The two "front-runners" look like bickering school girls while RP looks like an adult interested in getting to the root of the problem.
As for Hucksterbee, he just wants to get into the sandbox so he can bicker with the other girls too.
Polling numbers give a decent indication on who the public is deciding between. Obviously more time should be given to the candidates people are debating (no pun intended) who to vote for.

Wow. So Iowa, Florida, South Carolina, and New Hampshire have decided those two boobs are the best we can do?
That's great.

That would be an interesting wrinkle.

I'm not voting in the primary, but I'll vote for RP if he's still in it to win it.
Everyone thought that Huck would follow suit today along with Giuliani and Edwards today.

Yeah, I don't know what he's waiting for... isn't he basically out of momentum and money?

He's staying in to split the conservative/religious vote with Romney, so that Mccain comes out on top. Wouldn't surprise me if Huck is his VP.

The CNN debate made it pretty obvious that they were concentrating on the "perceived" frontrunners. They were hoping for some spats between McCain and Romney and got them. Unfortunately , in the process, they ignored , deliberately, the other two candidates.
Huckabee was irate, and I can't blame him. It also woud have been nice if time limits on responses were adhered to Once Romney's mouth gets started, it seems it never stops. IDK why they don't just cut the damn microphone.

Well, she is the titular nominee. ;)

This is a chicken or the egg problem.
Are the front runners the front runners because the media keeps concentrating on who they BELIEVE should be the front runners or are they front runners who are just being reported on by the media?
What if the press NEVER covered Barak Obama?
How often do you think he would be whuppin the Clinton machine in the primaries then?
What if Ron Paul was the feature story EVERY night on the 5:30 news?
How much credability would he garner if he appeared to be endorsed by appearing regularly in your living room every night?

They specifically stated at the beginning that there were no rules or time limits... With those guidelines, I can't blame anyone for taking as much time as they could. I actually thought Ron Paul was way too complacent -- he never said anything about the # of questions he was asked, nor did he attempt to keep people from cutting him off, like the rest of the candidates did...

Good points.
A few days ago Jon Stewart was talking about the effect the media has on the election.
I forget what he said, wish I had a clip.
But it was along the same lines as what you are saying.
I personally think the media has such a massive impact on elections that it is quite embarrassing.

Indeed. I suspect this is a reason why candidates put fundraising high on their priority list. No money, no ads on news media networks.
The internet might be able to break the stronghold that the news networks have on this nation.
