A seasonal topic I'll admit, but maybe some people do their own taxes, or don't want to shell out $200-$300 to get them done at HR Block(a total rip off I must say) or some other seasonal tax prep joint. People could ask questions and get help, and also read up on topics already posted. Maybe it would not be official advice but more of a guideline.
A lot of people don't have to see a tax professional and can do their own taxes, so we can make slickdeals better by helping people help themselves and saving them money in the process. I'm sure there are plenty of people that would share their knowledge, me being one of them.
So how about a tax prep section????

people have already used the lounge for it and it seems to work nicely.

I agree. A temporary sub-forum strictly for tax advice and discussion would be nice.

If you cant navigate an easy to use program like Tax Cut then there is very little help a Forum could ever offer you

For people that have simple filings, that's true. But, some people could compare notes on itemizing, mortgage interest deductions, points on a mortgage, sales tax, etc. Unless you know what info to get together, the software doesn't help a whole lot unless you buy the deluxe.

Talk about easy!!! I just did one of my buddy's tax return. He only had 2 Items to enter...a W-2 and a 1099.

Simple Right???

Wrong.

The 1099 is for Truck and Tool paid by his work. Basically they pay him to rent his truck and his tools for the day, based upon an hourly wage...say 2 buck an hour per hour worked.

Well 1099 income is taxable right??? Yea...but you can write it off.

This is where a discussion board on entering taxes would help casuse in this case you have to brute force the entries directly into the forms.

Note, not trying to start a tax thread here...just trying to show an example on why it would be helpful. It took about half an hour last night to do it and I had last years return to go by as well...was like 2+ hours last year.

The Deluxe versions are the ones that get all the free stuff (State, Quicken/Money, Its Deductible, NAV, etc) anyway. Coupled with a $30 off $150 coupon from Staples, your deluxe tax software ends up being FAR (or less, as is my case) - and the rebates are the EZ rebates, so no mailing.

there are cpa's on the board, and people who know where to find understandable tax codes pertaining to the question.

I've gotta believe that there are forums which focus on tax advice, which are frequented year-round by accountants, IRS enrolled agents, and other tax professionals. I'd prefer to visit those sites for advice than to use Slickdeals.

Forums need to "stick to their knitting," doing what they do best and not try to be all things to all people.

For example, one would not go to a cycling forum to get info about customizing the Windows XP registry or to find leads on DVD burners. And one should not expect the best slick deals from accountant forums, or the best tax advice from a slick deal forum.

Maybe one of those CPAs mentioned above would like to start a thread referring Slickdealers to the very best tax advice sites?

blankblank is a CPA and has already given me some decent advice. The thing is, when someone on a site like SD gives you advice, you don't just act on it without checking into it first.

If you want advice on slick deals, go to Slickdeals.net. They specialize in deals there and the people who hangout there share a common interest - slick deals.

If you want advice on taxes, got a tax or accounting website. That's their specialty, and the people who hangout there share a common interest.

Yes, there are some slickdealers who know taxes, just as there are some tax people who know good deals.

Slickdeals can't fill the needs of all people - go to there there is the best info available!
