For those thread you know whatters that have said this is a scam. I have received EVERY magazine I have ordered from them! Both free AND paid subscriptions. I have also received emails back from ALL questions that I sent to Customer Service (I accidentally put my name on a gift subscription and needed to change it . . . which they did). Important thing to note about Bassmasters: they send these really super-sneaky "Invoices" after you sign up for a free sub. The Publisher, NatCom is notorious for attempting to freak you out into paying for what is called a "renewal at birth" in Magazine Circulation Lingo.

What this means is, they Create aa letter with the bold heading "INVOICE" and put an "AMOUNT DUE" figure in a box and make the whole dern thing look like a dunning notice and the only clue you have that it is an attempt to get you to pay for an extra year is where it says in very small print: "Type of Subscription - renewal"

DOn't ever throw away any letters from magazine publishers just cuz you think it's a renewal letter - at the very least open them and read them. You never know what you might find.

For example - One unbalanced Coupon Trader from another board got banned from it and as her parting revenge, she went to a local newsstand, rifled through all the magazines she could find for blow-in cards and then filled them all out in the names and addys of anyone whose address she had gotten a hold of. She did each gal for about 20 subscriptions each.

I never had anything to do with the nutjob but some well-meaning User had given her my address when she asked for it just to send me a birthday card or some such. It took me weeks to sort that mess out and since I already subcribed to most of them for free, it was a nightmare trying to get customer service to honor my free subs and terminate the fraudulent ones. If I hadn't been in the habit of opening every single poice of mail i get, I might have missed her little rampage and not caught on until issues started being sent. This is why we shouldn't have 2 competing threads on the same deal. Info about the legitimacy of this deal has been discussed in the other thread.

The deal is legit but the mags offered change on a daily basis so it pays to check back. Most days there are only 3 mags offered that few people want but some days as many as 12 mags are offered, many of which are high demand titles such as Wondertime, Cookie, Family Fun, Vibe, Spin and so on.

If you ordered RADAR, you may or may not get it because that magazine is terribly troubled. It has started up only to fold an issue or two later at least twice. The issues seem to come irregularly now even though it it supposed to be back on a normal bi-monthly schedule. It is a funny magazine to be sure - I do hope it manages to survive. If it folds, there is little chance of them selling the subscriber list to another maagzine because they have plans to try and become an "Internet Magazine". To that end, they've been devloping their online content over the past couple of years. This is a tough time for niche print mags. I hope RADAR makes it.

You're right about Radar - I do hope it continues as a print publication. I picked up a cheap/free (I forget) subscription last year and have thoroughly enjoyed it. They have some fantastic, original stories that you wouldn't see anywhere else. Some of them are funny, but many are quite serious and well written, rivaling anything you'd see in more uppity publications (the recent pieces on Scientology and 9/11 conspiracy theorists, for example). It seems like my issues have arrived fairly regularly over the past 8 months or so, but I haven't paid very close attention to the timing.

My fault for missing the other thread, but it would indeed be nice if they were merged.

No problem - chances are radar won't even last another year anywayy. To be safe and be sure you actually get a one years sub, you might want to put another order thru for just ONE year the next time it comes back up as free here which is usually every couple of weeks.

As the User above noted, the current offer is for SPIN in addition to Bassmaster and Computer Shopper.

Keep in mind you CAN give gift subs - just uncheck the box that says "Shipping same as billing" and it lets you enter a new ship to addy which can come in handy if you are a volunteer who sends free subs to soldiers or to prisoners in jails*.


*A few of us slick dealers volunteer to send at least 2 free subs per name on a list of prisoners we get from a Catholic Prison ministry group. I'm one of them. Is it actually an invoice or are they trying to get you to subscribe? The slips look similiar.

CHeck them very carefully - I doubt they are invoices. However, if they are, you can do two things:

1. Write cancel on the alleged invoice and rturn in the enevlope with a note saying you did not order the magazine.

2. Call the customer service number and tell them you signed up for a free subscription through a sponsored deal from a broker, Lowpricesubs and that the broker may have screwed up. Offer to send them the copy of the invoice you should have printed out reflecting that your order was piad in full with an amount of $00.00

This is a good wake-up call though to people who don't print out their confirmations - someday you might need them!

Finally - as Masque stated, it is highly unlikely that these are real invoices - they might say "invoice" on it but if you look carefully at the wording, you'll see that what the invoice is being sent for is an extra year at some allegedly discounted price and that you only have to pay it if you want the second year.

These types of Renewal letters are called Renewals At Birth and they are highly effective marketing tools. People freak and pay up. In the 2nd Mythbusting thread, I gave a list of Circulation terms such as this and definitions. People might find it useful tyo look at again:

Don't ever throw out an "Invoice" letter or anything that might be a renewal letter becuase there's always that tiny percent chance that there was a screw-up. and then there's just plain maliciousness that can happen such as:

Once when I was a Mod on a now defunct freebie site, I had to kick a con-artist off the board and she paid me back by getting my address under flase pretenses from another member and then signing me up for dozens and dozens of mags by going to the newsstand and grabbing all the blow-in cards. She sent them in to mags she knew had free offers as well as porn mags, gun magazines and other highly objectionable content. it took me weeks to straighten that all out. I had the last laugh though - I filed a complaint with the Postal inspectors who had other similar complaints. She didn't go to jail for that offense, but when I last inquired, she had been arrested and charged for other mail fraud charges she had pending,

I only include that story as a cautionary tale - don't give your last name to traders if you don't have to and use a private PO Box if you can afford it when trading coupons and such with total strangers. Your real name (first & last) plus a street address can be put to some seriously bad use by a nutcase with a grudge. While there are wonderful freebie people, there are some seriously deranged ones too - kinda just like in offline life, eh?

If i were you, I'd pay 1.60 for the ESPN, if you don't get it, file a dispute through paypal, its not like they got your CC or anything.

I have gotten over a dozen free subs from this place - every one I have ever requested I have gotten with only one exception and that's not their fault. let me explain:

Maxim & Blender now refuse to add extra years to existing subs if it's a free sub offer from a place like this. They used do it but limited you to 5 years. Now they are refusing to add ANY years to existing subs. I just got a letter from them saying they are refusing to process my request for a spnosred sub through Low Priced Subs because I am already a subscriber.

Blender & Maxim make up new rules all the time because they are catching heat for inflating their subscriber rolls. Please read BOTH my Mythbuster threads to find out why this is so controversial. Blender & Maxim - their entire growth in circulation is a giant bogus fake-out and advertisers are starting to catch on. Both magazines are in financial trouble and seeing ad pages decline so rapidly that the last issue of Blender looked more like a brochure than a magazine! The Circulation audit bureau (ABC) is starting to look askance at Maxim & Blenders inflated circulation numbers and that's why they're starting to refuse to add on years or give more years to current subscribers.
