I finished Wonderboys by Michael Chabon, and I'm thinking about reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by the same author, which won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Oh, and "SSH tips, tricks & protocol tutorial", Of Paradise and Power by Robert Kagan, and about a dozen other "practical" things.
ewww ASP.NET ;)
i'm a big fan of the separation of interface and implementation. asp .NET "code behind" makes it possible to almost completely remove design elements from actual subroutines - smart move.

I read PostSecrets this week. It's a coffee table book. The author/artist requested that people send him postcards upon which they write their secret. The secret had to be true, simply and boldly written, using as much creativity as possible. Some were very funny, some were heartbreaking.

I posted most of mine in this (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=56742&t=20092) thread. I just finished Anansi Boys (http://www.neilgaiman.com/works/books/anansiboys) by Neil Gaiman (the dude who wrote all the Sandman comics). It :punk: bigtime. Actually any of his stuff is awesome. I'm about to start Flags of Our Fathers (http://www.allreaders.com/Topics/info_9814.asp) and no, I haven't seen the movie. After that (next week sometime) I'll be onto The Tender Bar (http://www.tenderbar.com/), which I've been salivating over and am saving as a special treat for myself.
Oh, and before the Gaiman book I read I Want My Life Back (http://www.amazon.com/I-Want-My-Life-Back/dp/1592850839) by Steve Hamilton. Amazing. There really aren't words to describe that book.
On a related note, did anyone see the article (http://www.usnews.com/usnews/news/articles/060817/17bushbooks.htm) about how much the President reads? I heard Elliot in the Morning (http://www.eitmonline.com/) bashing Bush, saying that there's no way someone could read 60 books in 8 months. I read 5-8 a month. I can't find my copy of The Poor Man's James Bond, (http://www.campingsurvival.com/poormanjambo.html) and I can't find it at local bookstores, either. I may be forced to order it online and put myself on Homeland Security's list.
Lucky I still have my copy of The Turner Diaries (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Turner_Diaries) that I've lent out dozens of times. Not that I agree with the message of the book, but I did want to read something that the government didn't want me to know about.

Read that last month. It :punk: too! I gave the tv show a run just on account of how good the book was... no comparison at all. I'm considering putting the movie in my free Blockbuster trial queue.
I saw the movie, before I knew it was a book....great movie. As with most books turned in to movies, it brushes over, or elliminates most of the history of the town, the rascism. But still a great movie.

I am not a huge fiction fan, either. I'm usually selective about what I read, but I do stray from non-fiction often, simply because I am curious and I also have a few favorite fiction authors. This book was actually on the "must read" list for one of my lit classes, and I ended up really enjoying it because we never know if the narrator is male or female. It adds a nice twist to things! :)

I used to be a huge Cussler fan. IMHO he seems to just be cranking out books with out much thought put into them at all recently. The whole Pitt jr/ Summer thing could have given the books some new life/direction, but then he decided to reduced Summer's character to just another damsel in distress. I haven't decided if I'm going to even bother picking up Treasure of Khan. I'd be interested to hear what you think of Black Wind

My husband read that one. He has started it several times over the years and then just buckled down and did it. It took him almost 6 months to slog through it. He admitted to skimming some of the speech - and he NEVER does that. He's glad to have it behind him.
Right now I'm reading Ender's Shadow - the second series by Orson Scott Card in the Ender's Game thread. If you haven't read Ender's Game, I highly recommend it. I read the entire 4 book series in 3 weeks. It was that good.

I burned through it and Speaker for the Dead (had to take that from him while he was 30 pgs in) and loved Xenocide and Children of the Mind. My husband is currently reading Xenocide and I'm impatiently waiting for him to finish Children so we can discuss it.

college books
Although I won't give it away, I thought Shadow Puppets ended kind of flat.
NM, I had no idea that there was a "Shadows of the Giant" book. Will have to check that one out after I'm done with my current book.

Haven't read that one yet. I'll probably wait until all 3 are out b/c I'm weird like that.
I'm usually like that too (wait till their all out) but it was an older book I picked up at a used book store. I figured they probably would have published at least the 2nd book by now but no luck.
Haven't read that one...I read Ender (almost all of them) and all of the Alvin Maker series. That was my favorite...

I'll keep my eye out for that. I usually pick up any books of his I see when I'm at the used book store.
Also OSC wrote the scripts for a recent Ultimate Iron Man arc (comics) that was a really good read. I think he is suppose to do a follow up one this summer.

Rumor has it that there is a script in the works for Ender's Game. That would be very interesting to see.

I could not think of a single child actor I would picture in any role.

:iagree: this movie is going to suck, no matter who they cast. I just can't see it as being very good, at all.

IMDB says it set to be release in 2008.
Wolfgang Petersen is listed as the director they don’t any anybody (beside OSC) associated with it
It is said to be a mix of both Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow

Very true, do you think they could get away with teenage actors and just kind of fudge about their actual age of the characters in books?

That's what I thought about Harry Potter, too. So they cast newbies - worked great!

Again - that's what I thought about Harry Potter. No way could it be even a little bit as good as the book and they did OK with it.

I can see how they'd combine the two to flesh out the story. Should be interesting to see! As always, the book will be better.
*completely unrelated side note - I am loving the multi-quote feature!!!*
Bumping this to recommend a book. Written by the author of "Intriped" (William Stevenson) about the British secret service during WWII. Supposedly the inspiration for Moneypenny in the James Bonds books written by Fleming.
Spymistress: The Life of Vera Atkins, the Greatest Female Secret Agent of World War II
It is enthralling, although a little barebones about her personal feelings. She was a very powerful figure that kept her light under a bushel. She was involved in enigma, Polish and French resistance, etc. Fascinating!

I just got done reading another Stephanie Plum series book. It is what my husband would call a chick flick book. They are histerical though !!! I don't think I have ever laughed out loud when reading a book, but I do with these. My next one I have to read until my other Plum books come is The Thirteenth Tale. Can't wait to dive into that one.

I'm bouncing back and forth between two now:
Richard Dawkins - The God Delusion
-hard to get into, reads like a college lecture at times, but very interesting. But I definitely need breaks from it at times so...
Sarah Clarke - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrel
-LONG book, over 1000 pages. Set in 1800s England about magicians. Slow at first, but getting very interesting. Won a few awards.

Tried to read that one - got 100 pages in and threw in the towel. Hubby did the same thing, but didn't tell me where he quit until I did. It was pretty much the same spot. I just couldn't get into it! I thought 100 pages was a fair shot. My FIL loved it, though!
