There is a problem in the Coupons section. People are posting iTunes codes, and lurkers are taking them. The people posting the codes asked that you post if you used a code, and lurkers obviously can't post.
Anyone agree with me?

Yeah I see your point......but how do you know that is it not members that are signed in and are just too lazy to post a reply?

My suggestion, and what I do, is tell people to PM me. If I have a 1 time use code and I'm not going to use it, I'll post:
1 Time Use Code for ________
then the body of the post would state how much it's for & when it experires & if you want it, PM me.
My fear with a Memeber only area is that the 1 time posters will pop up & ruin it. And also, I think the MR. SD would have to go through every memeber & ok them to be there. I don't know if that is true, only Mr. SD would know.

I'm not sure what forum script SlickDeals is using, but it's easy to block guests from accesing certain forums.
When you do the "pm me for code" thing don't you get spammed with PM's?

Well whats more likely to happen?
1. A visitor just taking the code, and not replying because they would have to register.
OR
2. A member logged in takes the code, but just doesn't say "I took it"

Nope, maybe 2, 3, and I just tell them that someone else PMed first & I'm sorry. But after the code was gone, I'd ModAlert the post & ask for it to be removed, or edit the post to note that it's gone.

yes its easy to make it viewed by members only, but i'd do what op said and ask to get pm'd. its really not that much, and its very easy to just delete ones in case you do get a lot.

I imagine the reason this hasn't been done already is because Mr. SD likely makes 90% of his referral revenue from guests. But, yes, I agree - the Freebie and Coupons forums, at least, should be Members Only. Not fair for lurkers to be able to swipe stuff that should be going to contributing members.

what's the difference between a lurker and someone who creates an account just to get in?

There isn't, but at least it'd be a start.

So I notice the 2 people pushing for this are both fairly new( <6 months)
After you have been around awhile, you will notice this same type of suggestion comes up about every 3 months(this and the "for Sale" section idea). Not saying you may not have a valid point, just saying it's been discussed before.

I'm not new.
And I don't particularly care one way or the other as I've spent a grand total of five minutes in the Coupon section, ever - I just think it's a valid point. :P

OP says "PM me for code."
When OP receives the PM, he edits the post to say the "code has been used (no more PMs, please)."
Seems about as simple and complete as possible...

This is exactly what I did for my one time use $15 off $15 on the EAStore.com. Worked fine.
However, I do see the OPs point. There really isn't much of a perk to registering other than losing the banners and being able to post.

True, but eventually, maybe there will be enough user demand (request) and it will actually happen.
I agree it should be done- and I never go in coupons either. If a registered member is too lasy to log in and say something in the thread they're....well, I have many things to call them but no nice ones- so I won't, but I will say what are the odds that that person is actually a productive member of the forum- posting stuff of any kind, feedback on deals, new deals, etc? Pretty slim IMO.
I sniff the threads from home without logging in, but if I actually USE anything I log in and say so, not like it's hard to type your name and pword.
This forum software is very popular, it's used on 2 other boards I am on too. Should be very easy to set 'member only' sections for individual forums.
Posting like Optimus Prime does is a good way IF you have the desire to do it that way. I don't. If I come across some deal as such I am more likly not to post it at all rather than deal with PM's or the flames resulting from it being used by someone who doesn't say they did.
