View Full Version : Suggestion: Location specific sub forums for deals that are in a very limited area

Since SD is international and deals that don't cover at least a few large regions of the US don't get must cover, maybe there can be a forum or sub-forum only for deals that are very location specific. i.e. a specific town or metro area.

In the past if the deal isn't a very large metro area, no one will find it because most of the viewers here can't participate and it'll disappear to page 50 of the hot deals thread within a day.

I suggest maybe having a handful of sub-forums for these deals. The subforums can cover larger areas than the deals posted in them will cover, but will allow people to search their sub-forum to find deals in their area.

Maybe the sub-forum's can be named for metro areas and states.

For instance:
LA/SOCAL
SF/NORCAL
SEATTLE/PORTLAND
DC/MD/VA
TAMPA/ORLANDO
MIAMI/SOUTHFLORIDA
KC
STL
CHICAGO
ETC...

Just a thought.

If a deal was in, say, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington D.C., would you expect to find it repeated in the sections for each of those areas?

Here in the Midwest, the chain of grocery stores called Meijer has a presence only in IL, IN, KY, MI, and OH. Where would their deals be listed?

Some stores (like Fry's Electronics) have deals that are available in some of their stores but not in others. Would an OP be responsible for knowing if his deal is available everywhere or just in a few stores? If an OP knows for sure that the San Jose Fry's store has the deal, should he post it in the SF Bay section or the nationwide section or ???

Those would still be in the regular hot deals as they cover a wide enough area IMO. There'd be a fine line between a deal being regional (several states) and local that the administration here at SD would have to define if they wished to ever do something similar to this.

I'm envisioning something that would be only for deals in a very limited area. Also, it could be an area for people from the same area to converse about deals and life in general.

I'm sorry but I have to say that I think sub-forums for local areas would clutter up the look of the forum more. To cover all areas (remember SD is international as you mentioned), there would have to be way too many sub-forums. And you would have to cover all areas or the people in the areas that were not covered would be upset.

If you're worried about missing deals for your specific city or area, you can set up a Deal Alert for it. That's what I did and it works beautifully for me.

(Now, if only we were allowed more deal alerts... or at least could include several forums at once for each keyword/alert, instead of having to repeat the keyword(s) for each forum separately... that would be great. :))

Well, I think there are definitely ways to put subforums in that wouldn't clutter a thing. Maybe have a link in hot deals to the directory of local sections (one link, not a link for all).

As far as people feeling left out or upset, cry me a river. They should get over it.

Actually, really no one would be left out if it was done right. There could be one per state, or one per metro area and posts should go in the subforum the deal is closest to.

Maybe thats your answer, GET OVER IT yourself...:dontknow:

Most all deals here are a YMMV, so people just need to title the threads better. Kinda simple when you think about it.

As far as your other statement, its obvious your not looking out for the forum as a whole but just looking out for yourself. If you want the deals stop being so lazy.

How do you get that I'm being selfish from my post?

I rarely if ever participate in the posted deals anymore as I just don't buy that much. I've seen other forums really drive in new members by having active local sections. It benefits the entire forum on the whole.

I don't understand why you are taking my post so personally. SD can choose to look into offering something like I posted or not, it's not skin off my back.

I was referring to the part saying if people don't like it they should "get over it".
This is a huge forum and your post makes it seem that you only want the option that works for you, hence the comment "As far as people feeling left out or upset, cry me a river. They should get over it."
Also coding is a lot of work, and I don't think a lot of people understand what goes into it and SD needs to make it so the site as a whole runs smooth. Having tons of sub-forums doesn't help it actually makes it worse sometimes.
