User CP - Edit Options - Who's Online Forum Home - select No
shows any way, a problem for 500mhz 11y.o. laptop and Hot Deals forum. Server load, too, eh?

I tested this with various accounts & browsers and can't reproduce it. Did you refresh the page after turning off the who's online display?

yes
try all 3 "Who's Online" ON, save, confirm.
then 1-st one OFF. I think that's how bug mitigates.

Your first screenshot shows who's online for the forum home page turned off. If you view this page, (http://forums.slickdeals.net/index.php) the who's online should not be there.
The 2nd screen shot shows that it's turned on for the individual subforums. If you have the Who's Online Forum Display turned on, then the screenshot you attached is correct.

maybe, best to prevent is rename "Who's Online Forum Display" to "Who's Online SUB-Forums Display" ?
